Today I entered a basilica of breakfast, a cathedral of culture, a sacred display of what makes our country great. Dreary eyed and peckish to say the least, I perused Google Maps where my eyes fell upon the words Waffle House. Waffle House has served up to be everything I needed and more. Never have I ever walked into an establishment for the first time and felt at home - welcomed by the staff as if I was a member of their own family. The employees of this establishment have a camaraderie only comparable soldiers led by a war weary line cook. Caesar himself could not have dreamed of a more determined and cohesive unit of troops. 250 years ago, on this day, our founding fathers conceived of a nation for the people, of the people, and by the people, held together by the common belief that our nation would allow everyone the right to life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness. This Waffle House experience is the first time I've felt that I've been guaranteed happiness, more so than just the pursuit of it. No cookie nibbled by a French novelist could send one more suddenly into the past - a past where I sat on a high chair playing with crayons and hot wheels, enjoying the simple pleasure of childhood, and being fed silver dollar pancakes by my mother. Sun rising over a dew covered Kansas City, sun beams gleaming through the windows over the grits, waffles, toast, eggs - steam rising off the hot black coffee. Our server, Mike, the guarantor of grits, the deacon of decaf, the sultan of service, christened this experience with some of the best customer service I've ever had. He was sharp, witty, and made sure we had absolutely everything we needed. This must be heaven, but I'll settle for this Waffle House, or rather, a Waffle Home. It's Xmas afternoon, the Chiefs are playing unwatchable football, ya got a bit of a low key headache from Xmas eve cocktails, there's only leftover finger foods in the fridge and you just don't have the stamina to start cooking anything legit. What to do? Waffle House!! I put on my new retro MTV sweatshirt from Santa, told my wife of my plan and we were dashing down Antioch Rd for an arduous 8 block journey to the land of 24/7/365 breakfasts. The crew was in a joyous mood, my cheesesteak smothered hash brown plate was everything I ever wanted, or at least needed at that moment - meaty, cheesy, salty, greasy and highly caloric. My side waffle was a bit late getting to my table but provided a malty, buttery and syrupy sweet pairing to course #1. Waffle House - Thanks for always being there when I need you the most. This was my first visit to this WH. The food was very good as was the service! The staff greeted me when I came in and were friendly throughout my meal. Just as importantly, the manager was on sight engaging with the staff and cooking! What was interesting was that while the staff were cordial with the manager, they were also respectful and professional. Bottom Line - this was my first trip but won't be my last! So if you're looking for a nice meal in a clean space with a friendly atmosphere, give them a shot! read more

It's the service. To celebrate 19 years we went to Lawrence on perhaps the hottest day in Jayhawk history, official temp was like a million. We had a sweaty swell time eating and drinking our way along Mass street, resting & cooling intermittently at our worth-it Mass St Airbnb. Next morning we had planned to enjoy breakfast at local Lawrence joint but decided to get otr, enjoy some fare more closely tied to the roots of our relationship. #281 did not disappoint in any aspect. gotta say after dropping gross amount of $$$ at bougie Lawrence mainstay Saturday night, Waffle House was outstanding, especially the service, man I wish I exactly recalled the server's name, maybe Riley or Kayla, spunky & fantastic, pushing the signature sauce and making sure our cups were always full. My friends and I came here tonight and we were instantly greeted by Dezi. She was so caring and sweet, their cook wasn't there yet but she started cooking our food for us and it was so so good. Her daughter was there as well and she was just a delight to have around. It was definitely the best dining experience we've ever had, it made the entire place so inviting and comforting. Listen, Waffle House has very specific items and I have certain expectations. So that being said, I am rating this PARTICULAR Waffle House in COMPARISON to other Waffle House locations. They just reopened dining in (I think for a week) and not many people are aware yet. It was late when we got in and we sat and ate and had midnight chat with the cooks and a few locals. It was peaceful, the food was good, and I felt like I was eating at my uncles house. This location was the first one in Missouri (according to the chef) and they are also supposed to have some haunting going on from a former employee of 40 plus years who passed. It was like a second home. All in all we enjoyed the stop here between the airport and our downtown hotel. It's not a 5 star place for cleanliness or extra high quality food. But the people were legit and it got the job done. read more

I love eating at any WH, but when I stopped in recently for breakfast I was treated to the chef complaining that he wasn't going to be on the schedule with his gf (priorities?) and that he would get a job elsewhere if necessary. I laughed it off (how dumb was I at that age?) and dug into one of my favorite meals - a double order of hash browns with all the trimmings I like. Very friendly and welcoming staff. Fast service too. I would really love to give five stars but, I can't. When asked if I want "butter", I expect real butter. I don't want hydrogenated whipped oil. Beautiful waffles and grits (and everything else) ruined with garbage, sub-par butter-flavored oil. Seeing the yellow tinted butter-flavored oil being poured from a jug is gross. I will say though, they know how to cook an egg! Watching the staff work together is like watching a well choreographed dance. read more

My friend had only been to Waffle House one time in his teens, and I haven't had WH since living in Texas several years ago, so once I saw that yellow-squared sign, I knew we had to make it our breakfast destination. I got a chocolate chip waffle (mmm, malty goodness), and a large order of hashbrowns, which is equivalent to two rounds. My meal came in around $5, and I was stuffed. My friend ordered a bunch of stuff from all over the menu, including a waffle, grits, a biscuit, and smothered & covered hashbrowns. Our entire table was covered in plates. But, this location's waitress had the nastiness attitude I have seen by someone who makes their living on tips . I'm a truck driver. I was über excited when we came across a WH on our road trip, but was less excited about the food. We were seated pretty quickly for a weekday morning/lunch rush and the food came out even quicker, which isn't always a good thing. The waffle was limp and didn't have that crunch right when you bit into it. Now I am not one to lather my waffle in syrup or butter, so there really shouldn't have been a reason why my waffle was limp. I also ordered a side of potatoes with a slice of cheese, which were pretty tasty. The location of the restaurant is convenient since the freeway is close by and the waitresses were pretty friendly, even though they were busy. read more

If you are traveling in the south, you need to visit a Waffle House. There aren't many this far north. I had the "all the way" hashbrowns and a side of grits. The rest of the fam had a mix of waffles and hashbrowns with eggs. All items were great. My "all the way" hashbrowns were unbelievable. I was a bit hesitant about the mix of flavors, but it totally works. Would be even better after a few beers. The best part about this Waffle House is that it seems original. I have loved years of Waffle House, from Dallas TX to Kansas City. Nothing like a good, hot waffle and Jimmy Dean sausage with syrup! But this Waffle House was an exception! My 10 yr old nephew and I went in on a weekend morning. Someone on the Waffle House staff put a quarter into the juke box, which started a Country & Western song. The whole staff SANG! LMAO! It was hysterical! it was so comical, it should have been on tv! Food was excellent, of course, and FAST. I often eat at very high-end restaurants b/c I like to taste different foods from around the world, but you cannot beat a hot waffle and sausage on Sunday morning in my book. read more

Normally a good experience and friendly servers. However, the last two visits have not been great. Newer server got mad when I sat down before the area was thoroughly cleaned. On Sunday October 7 I placed a order for six different meals. All of the hash browns were burnt two orders had onions mushrooms peppers added, there were like six onions one mushroom slice and two peppers.My son was told not to make such large carry out orders anymore because they would not do it! At the time the Chiefs game was on and they only had two other customers!? Lazy !! I tried to call and complain but they had put on a prerecorded message. Probably were expecting my call! This happened a long time ago, but this is important. Do NOT eat at this waffle house. I used to go here a lot. I went with my brother and my dad one day just to grab a quick bite. I ordered something simple like an omelet with hash browns. I got my food, started eating and that's when I found a large bug in my hash browns. It was about the size of 2 nickels side by side. I showed my dad and brother, and the woman behind the counter. She took it, and tossed it and came up and said "well at least I got those hash browns taken off for you!" with a big grin on her face. That's when we got up and left. I've never been back since, and I never will. Not only is that piss poor service, taking off just one item, but the fact that there was VERMIN. IN. MY. FOOD. That's disgusting and I will never eat there again. This location should be shut down. I know it's waffle house and not an upscale steak house, or a 5 star restaurant, but that is in no way an excuse for potential food poisoning and possible endangerment to my health. read more
