Cool, old school diner smack dab in the center of town. Virlie's was recommended to me by the guard at Crosswinds Campground at check-in. So glad we listened to what she had to say. Place was packed with locals. Sure sign you have scored, right?! Absolutely. Everything was great from service to plating to value. According to my "Give 'em a Whirl" meter Virlie's is a definite do-over. Support local. Go here.

Virlies, I have been using take out as my go to lately. The only issue is they are busy, always, and when I use my iPhone, the background noise at Virlie's makes it hard for the cashier order taker to hear. Which includes my hearing aid equipped self. I will try maybe after 1:00 to order. The only terrible problem might be Virlies is sold out of the daily special. Monday, is chicken and dumpling, I ordered the quart size with cornbread. The Soup was as close to my mother's as I will ever get. Thick, savory, big chunks of thick sauce laden dumpling. The cornbread is sweet cornbread like my mom made for ever. It is not the non sugar cornbread I encounter in the south. My MIL made that type in a cast iron skillet. Virlie's is a local diner, not fancy just a good home style eatery.

Chicken and dumplings, applesauce and cornbread (Already had eaten a good bit of it before taking the photo). So delicious!

Awesome service and delicious food! Came here after surgery and the special was chicken and dumplings which were just like my grandmother used to make them many many years ago. The cornbread is the best I've ever had. So good we even ordered a plate to go for tomorrow. We aren't local but tend to stop by here on the way back after our UNC appointments and it never disappoints. Always quality comfort foods and great service! Highly recommend!

I stopped in here on a whim, didn't really know much about it but the place was packed so I figured it must be good! Indeed it was good! And the ladies that work here are amazing! They really take care of their customers. I don't travel through Pittsboro often but next time I do I'll be back!

I was blown away by how attentive and friendly they were despite being super busy. For the environment, the place felt a bit loud and crowded - which for one was a testament to how well liked it appeared to be (we are visiting from out of state) and how they had to make very creative use of the space as they must cater to so many in a smaller space. It was also clean and quite nostalgic with lots of interesting old time memorabilia - and didn't try to go too cheesy and over the top with the theme though again was a bit too busy and crowded and could have maybe used a more highlighted 'less is more' approach to showcase the ice cream shoppe feel, the old time candy shop ambience, etc. I also loved that there were no tvs to distract from the ppl in front of us, and though time period music would be fun, it might have made it even too much louder. I appreciated very much that they seemed to want ppl to talk and enjoy the company in front of them. The fried pickles app was really good, and the dreamsicle style shake and curly fries - sooo delicious! The ice cream concoctions we didn't try, but saw delivered all around us were huge and fun and looked so good! The BLT was a bit dry and could have used a good mayo or sauce, and my sister's Hawaiian chicken didn't have the Hawaiian bun but it was unique and still not bad. Though with the soda shoppe name I had hoped for more unique or home made soda concoctions or offerings. Overall though- the food was mostly really really good; it seemed cute and beloved and very popular with the town; and there was a clear pride in the place - and very apparent love and appreciation of the customers by the staff which was number one in what I saw and was very impressed by. They just need and deserve a bigger space!

Sat down and was greeted immediately ordering a water and sweet tea. Loved looking thru menu with so many good choices. We were going out for a big dinner later so this was suppose to be a small lunch. My wife ordered a cup of soup. I ordered a bowl of brunswick soup and a grilled pimento cheese sandwich. I could not finish the soup as the bowl was large and amount of meat in it was abundit. My grilled cheese was wonderful, I love pimento cheese. Unfortunately we could not try any of the soda or ice cream products this trip. The service is great and friendly. Restrooms are restored old school design. Will return to try other menu items and some Soda Shoppe product.

The service and presentation of each plate was outstanding. We had the 3 course Prix Fixe menu, and we got something different so we could try 6 things. Overall, the food was good but did not quite rise to the same level as the presentation and service. Rating by plate: - Pumpkin Squash (2 stars): It was very hard and not very warm. Do not recommend. - Pork Osso Bucco (5 stars): Best thing we had. Wish we both ordered this one so we didn't have to share. - Beef Tenderloin (4 stars): We enjoyed it, but have definitely had better for less money. - Seared Chicken Breast (3 stars): It was a rectangular piece of meat, which was unexpected. I would compare it to chicken at a wedding, but I've had better at a wedding. - NC Cheese Trio (4 stars): Large portion of cheeses with a nice variety. I wish the crackers had more variety (not all seedy). - Chocolate Soufflé (5 stars): This is their signature item and a must get! The name on the menu is more complicated than the word chocolate, lol.

So we thought we would order one to drink there and one to microwave in the morning. I ordered two medium-sized breve lattes, (oh wait a minute, they don't do breve so they had to use whole milk), with an extra shot in each. My total was $17. My sister got the same thing. The coffee tasted like watered down milk with maybe a quarter cup of instant coffee in it. It was awful! We threw both cups out. $34 literally down the drain. The clerk was very snippy with me when I asked for breve, telling me they didn't have half-and-half or cream. She also seemed bothered that I was adding an extra shot and that I had her break down the cost for me, since the total amount was much more than the signage. If visiting Pittsboro, I suggest you go to Metal Brixx Café. Best coffee ever, and when you ask for an extra shot, each shot is a double shot.
