The place itself was chic, romantic yet not too fancy-moderate with a dab of "wear your best casual dress." The jasmine tea was quite wonderful, don't leave it too long in, the more bitter it'll get. We go the bao buns for appetizer & spicy ahi (kind of like a crispy rice) and we enjoyed both of them. I must say the spicy ahi had a very spicy Thai chili pepper on it so that's something to look out for. I got the spicy salmon, which came with these yummy noodles, seasoned so well. My friend enjoyed this "curry avert gar'" she notes that it was very filling and fresh. Although, the over easy egg did add some flavor to this plate. Spicy Salmon Teriyaki Soba: Unfortunately, I cannot acquire a taste for this type of fish. Although it was loaded with soba noodles and greens, the protein is not my preferred choice. Aside from mediocre food, the overall service was far from stellar. First and foremost, the server did not bring me a spoon. He also would not refill our water glasses. For these reasons, I had to get the water and utensils myself. We noticed how he showed favoritism toward another party because they ordered cocktails; he didn't forget about their drinks. Our plates didn't arrive at the same time. My brother's fish was served 10 minutes later. While the food looked fantastic, the taste and service was at the opposite end of the spectrum. Stopped by for takeout. This review is just for the vegan ramen to go. The vegan option is spicy and the spice level cannot be modified. So the server suggested replacing with vegetarian broth and mentioned it still tastes good. It took about 15 min for my piping hot noodles to be ready. I rushed home because the hot food in thin plastic contains that may melt had me worried. As for taste the veggie broth was lacking. No flavor. The tofu is fried tempura style. A few friends and I visited the midtown location on a Sunday evening for dinner. It was easy to get a reservation around 6:30PM and it wasn't too busy when we arrived. It is a nice large space. We ordered the "a taste of wagamama" menu. The food was fantastic! And it was even more fantastic for the price. The tasting menu includes 4 dishes paired with 4 "sips". We enjoyed all of the food. The korean fried chicken boa was a nice crispy even with all of the delicious sweet, smokey and slightly spicy sauce. We were really surprised at how much we enjoyed the mixed mushroom and panko eggplant bao. The katsu and yaki soba were solid and was a really good portion. We had a few more drinks afterwards, but were more than satisfied with the quality and amount of food. I would definitely come here again for the food. Unfortunately, what fell short for us was the service. The service was extremely slow and we noticed each server was texting on the floor every time we needed their attention. Also, it was odd how the food and drinks came separately. We were warned that the food would come in an irregular cadence, but we expected the sake parings to come with the food. Instead, the sake pairings came all at once and we were told to taste the sake in a different order than how the menu was listed. My husband and I ordered the pork belly baos for an appetizer and the chicken gyoza soup with udon noodles and the spicy chicken with ramen noodles. The pork belly was nice and crispy and the bun soft and chewy. I only wish it had a sauce on it or at least on the side, like a hoisin sauce, as it would have helped to enhance the flavor profile. For a quick lunch, this hit the spot. The space is cute, with tons of windows, with an open kitchen adding to the ambiance. The staff was friendly, but not overly crazy, which was nice when we weren't looking for a high-touch environment. The food was all good - nothing crazy - but good enough to go back and try other things. The gyoza & pork belly bao were both quite good. I wish there was a bit more pork on the bao, but the fried apple really made a different type of taste and texture. The pad thai was a lazy decision since there was a full day of walking ahead of us. Wagamama is located across from New York City Center and is great for a delicious hot meal in a sitdown restaurant. It's my favorite place to eat before watching a show at NYCC. I've been here at least three or four times. They offer communal seating, booths, or a seat at the bar. I really love the food there which is why it kind of pains me to give it a mediocre review because of their service. The service there is super odd and really hit or miss. The most recent time I was there there was a couple visiting from another country ahead of me, waiting to be seated. They spoke English fluently but they clearly didn't understand at first what the hostess was asking when she asked them if they wanted to sit at the bar and just needed her to slow down or repeat herself. And I was put off by how dismissive she was. Then when it was my turn to be seated, I also said I did not want to sit at the bar. I had on a big winter coat, my admittedly large purse, and I hate balancing on a stool trying to eat my meal while weighed down by my stuff. There was plenty of communal seating available because it was only 4:30 - maybe the hostess was having a bad day or something since I felt like she was impatient with me too when she begrudgingly sat me in the communal seating, but only after asking again if I was sure after I declined the bar seating. It's not like I asked to take up a private booth as one individual person? And all three or four times I've been here, the server was difficult to find when it was time to get the check. The first time I had to go up to a random server to ask them to find our server so we could get our check. It was really odd because we had just conveyed to them during their last check-in that we would be done eating shortly and would need our check because we had a show next door at NYCC. The most recent time I was there, I told my server as I paid that I'd be using the bathroom before I leave the restaurant but is it okay if I leave my reusable bottle and umbrella (on the bench next to me) here while I go downstairs (where the bathrooms are located), otherwise I'll bring it with me. It was still pretty early before a dinner rush, but I didn't want to be rude. They were like, "Of course, take your time, I'll make sure no one touches it," and I went downstairs to wash my hands, and I came back and all my stuff had been cleared and put on one of the server stations. I wasn't concerned that my stuff was missing or stolen, it was just frustrating I had only been gone for five minutes and in that time, the reassurances I was given were for naught. Again, the food there is really great - I've had their ramens, curries, and love their creative cocktails. I'm Filipino and I think "inspired" Asian cuisine can be hit or miss, but almost everything I've had is delicious. Do not get the mushroom bao though - it's insanely salty and this is coming from someone who loves salt. Also check out what's on the paper placemat that they put down - it's weird they don't point it out but those are their specials that are available for a limited time. I would've switched to what was on the placemat both times if it had been pointed out to me and at that point it was too late to switch. read more
