I haven't written a review in a while but coding Tahoe we came across this cute town of Truckee, and decided to have breakfast at the wagon train. We were greeted and seated immediately. The service was amazing, everyone was sweet including what I believe is the owner who was also helping around. I got the biscuits and gravy with sausage scrambled eggs with veggies . It was delicious ! Would definitely recommend and come here again. Originally we were going to go to squeeze in but we came here Instead. Great last minute choice! Thanks guys read more

Walked in, saw the "seat yourself" sign, went to the table by the window (brought grandson up to Truckee for a nice drive and to visit the snow). We attempted to sit at this table, did notice the tip and rag still sitting there, pulled chair away from table to sit when a very mean waitress snaped at us, "that table isn't clean yet". I replied we wanted to sit there, we'd wait, she replied, "it's gonna be a while" and walked away. I couldn't believe the way she treated us. So we waited and 5 minutes later no one cleared the table we wanted so we sat at the one next to it, another waitress showed up with waters, told us the menus are on the shelf next to us and left. I saw a $30 hamburger which was alarming, the prices all seemed very high, but it is in Truckee. Again, no one returned so we stood up to walk out and someone had the nerve to yell at us as we left, "thank you". SO Weird. We ended up at a great little place a few building down, prices were more reasonable, service was awesome. We couldn't get over the way they treated us, we had gone there serveral times in the past, we figured something was off, but what??. Then prior to writing this review I figured it must be bc they were closing soon. Which if that was pointed out to us when we walked in I would have left without a bad taste in my mouth.... (see what I did there). Anyway NOT going back to this place EVER. The rude watruss was heavyset woman with died blond, white hair tied up in a pony tail on the near top of her head. We arrived a little too early for my interview, so we wanted to eat breakfast. There was another breakfast place we wanted to try but it didn't open til 8. I got the wise folks French toast with bacon, hubby got the same except with a pancake. The bacon was perfect! Crispy and meaty! French toast was just the right amount. Coffee was nice and hot (must have been good, I had 3 cups)! I couldn't justify a 14.00-15.00 breakfast entree and what we got for the price was justified. read more

Was visiting family in town, remembered that this place was so good and that they had pot pies so we saw that it was open on Yelp and we got out and drove into the snow to get there only to see that it was closed and until April 15. Service is the best! You walk in and all the sudden you are greeted by tons of people. Not just a "hey I'll be right with you!" I'm talking a full on "smile, hi welcome in! How are you?" Wagon Train Cafe, located on Donner Pass Road has you covered, as they serve fine breakfast and lunch, every day of the week, starting at 05:30 in the morning. As I paused at the front door, I noticed two things that sent me to nirvana. The first thing I noticed was the pained sign on the door advertises that "Breakfast Served All Day..." The second, and most important... an NRA sticker on the door, as in National Rifle Association, the group that stands for freedom, and our Second Amendment Rights for all law-abiding citizens. Walked in with 4 adults and 4 kids without any previous reservations and were welcomed right in. The staff was incredible from the moment we stepped in, offering us hot coffee, and drinks for kids in the appropriate to go cups. The food came up very fast and was incredibly delicious (highly recommend their hotcakes!). To top it off, the staff was highly engaged with the kids and even turned on the ceiling train to entertain the kids once they were done with breakfast. Dirty and disgusting. It is a 1950's coffee shop that has never changed - in a bad way. Furniture is old and uncomfortable, place doesn't look clean, service is poor, and the food is meh to gross. If the food were great it might be worth sitting in there, but it isn't. Way better options in town- even if you have to wait. read more

This has to be one of the worst restaurants I've ever been to in my life. Listen. Truckee is Truckee - I'm not expecting Michelin star food and/or service....BUT we've never felt more dismissed & disgusted than in this establishment. We thought we got there at the perfect time- the morning breakfast rush had slowed down & there were several 4 top tables available. To our surprise they took our group to the very back of the restaurant to a dark hidden 6 person table where you couldn't even see the front of the establishment. The only way you'd know we were there is when staff would come around the corner to toss their dishes in the bin across from us or patrons would come around the corner to head to the bathroom. After about 5 minutes of all four of us adults feeling uncomfortable where they sat us, I got up and asked to be moved to a 4 top where everyone else was sitting in the restaurant. Again, with so many tables available after the rush- it didn't make any sense why they would put us there. I mean I have an idea...our skin tone is a little darker than they would like. As I mentioned. Breakfast rush was over! Despite having the staff walk passed us a total of 28 times - YES I COUNTED. Not once did they stop and say, "we will be with you shortly". They just proceeded as if we were invisible. I thought this was just happening to us, until an older women sitting at the counter with her husband made eye contact with me, shrugged and smiled. I realized they were invisible too as staff was zooming passed them. This couple made the decision I wish I had. They got up and left. It took 35 minutes for us to be asked if we were ready to order. Other people arriving after us already served and food delivered. We were still waiting. Finally we had our order taken and food promptly arrived. Now, the food. It was like having my teenage kids make a meal. Eatable...but Basic. Flavorless. and Sad. 1000% not worth the horrible service we endure nor the price of the meal. Great little gem tucked into downtown Truckee. Right across from the train station. Decor can seem overwhelming when you first walk in. Yet pay attention - it's all dedicated to Truckee - its people, its history. The staff are super friendly. And when my friend got her plate, the bacon wasn't cooked enough for her liking. Eggs had no flavor and the bacon was soggy. I'm all for giving spots a second chance....except when the decor of your establishment is, for the most part, attempting to tell me and others that may have some views in common, that I'm stupid and treasonous. A friend and I went here for breakfast since the other places nearby had lines......now we know why. We should have known this was a bad decision when there was unrestricted/open seating. We then noticed that virtually nobody was wearing a mask. In addition, one of the staff bragged about either not serving, or only serving outside, supporters of Biden or BLM. Very unwelcoming and hostile atmosphere. We tolerated all of this. Now, about the food. Way overpriced. The food was so bad that if this place had been open when the Donner party was here, they likely would have eaten each other anyways instead of going here. Quick, what is the busiest place in Truckee at 630am in the morning? We had come to Wagon Train Coffee Shop because of the half price deal listed in our guide. Place is easy to find as it is the only establishment with a line of pickup trucks parked outside, on this Sunday morning. Outside sign says "Same family owned since 1947 Early bird special half off from 530-730am" Sign on the door says "Friend of the NRA' . We head on in, and are immediately greeted by the waitress, who says take any table you want. I take the table closest to the window, and farthest from the table with a toddler. All the wooden tables are lacquered with advertising underneath, license plates on the walls, traffic signs on the walls, and trophy heads of big game animals also hanging from the walls. Single TV blares with Fox news. We place our orders, with me getting the $14.50 Wagon train breakfast, and the wife getting the $18.50 shrimp avocado omelette, and the $3 coffee -hey they have to make money somehow! Service is leisurely. A kid points to the train hanging on the ceiling, and the employees start it up for a run around the tracks, to the kid's delight. My breakfast comes with two pancakes, two eggs, three sausages, and a small orange juice. The wife's meal comes with a four egg omelette, filled with shrimp and tomatoes, fruit salad, and two slices of toast. The meals are delicious, with the orange juice being simply fabulous, and the sausages oversized and spicy. The wife points out that the omelette lacks the avocado. The waitress smiles, and quickly adjusts the bill. Some people stagger in around 735am -must be tourists who couldn't wake up early enough for the half price deal. We get out of there with our $36,85 bill reduced to $18.43. Across the street the train crossing gates come down, and the warning bells ring. A 100+ car freight train comes through, horn blaring, with train car after train car rumbling over the tracks at the railroad. Seriously, this place is NASTY! It was not my choice to eat here but the group of people I was with while in Tahoe. I don't blame them for choosing the place though, they're not Yelpers and did not read the reviews and it was also the only place that could seat us quickly and there's a reason for that. First we ask for a table for 12, instead we get sat on 2 separate tables on opposite ends of the restaurant, wtf? Strike #1 Then as we sit and some of my table order Coffee the Waitress leans over me with a (metal) pot of boiling Coffee and spills some on me, scolding my chest and shoulder. Seriously?? Who trained these people? If you're serving hot drinks you remove the cup from the table and poor away from any customers to eliminate the chance of spilling on them. Strike #2 Anyhow, we order food and it comes in a timely manner but what both myself and my Husband got served could hardly be called food, it was inedible. Strike #3! My Eggs were raw, the Sausages cold and swimming in grease and the french toast just tasted of Butter like it has just been fried in it. This is one of the most special places in Truckee. We've been taking our kids there since they were infants and now as young teenagers, it will always be our family place. The entire staff is amazing the the owners, The Smarts are incredibly special people who have continued a tradition of service and community. It is the highlight of our trips to Truckee. Decor is built over years of being a community staple . Food was good , quick , and service top notch and the owner and staff were great. Walked into this restaurant thinking it was a cute place to grab a quick bite with my daughter. While trying to take a picture before sitting down, a scruffy old male employee very rudely yelled this is a restaurant! Really?! No kidding?! He was racist and pretty much scared us off. Thanks to this horrible experience we left the restaurant in a hurry. This is 2020 and being rude based on race is not acceptable and will not be tolerated!!!
