Always busy, but wait staff is really nice and accommodating. Good food - especially breakfasts.

When we're in Alturas on a mining expedition, we stay at the Wagon Wheel Motel. Happily, the Wagon Wheel Restaurant is just as great as the Motel. The waitstaff takes great care of us, the coffee is good, the breakfasts are large and they work hard to make you happy. Lunch is a mystery to us, since we're always up in the Modoc Forest mining, but dinner is a great value. Great steaks, soup & salad bar and all the fixin's are right here, just across the parking lot from our room. We recommend the steaks, and the chicken fried steak is always fresh and yummy! We happily recommend the Wagon Wheel, where you'll be treated right! read more

For what it's worth it's a diner that bangs out solid breakfasts. There were three of us, and we ordered pancakes, omelets, eggs and sausage. They came with biscuit and home fries. Service was fast and friendly and for the three of us the damage came up to $25. So no a fuss reliable breakfast stop. read more

Thanks for making us comfortable in Alturas, CA. We blew a trailer tire and lucky for us we had it repaired at Les Shwab next door (also a pleasant establishment) to the Wagon Wheel. On business trip, late morning, middle of nowhere on the way from Lakeview back to Reno, and hungry, what to do? Stopped and asked a local for their recommendation and without hesitation they said the Wagon Wheel. Solid homemade breakfast with no skimping on portions. Waitress was very friendly and accommodating. Mexican omelet was loaded with meat, tried the biscuits and gravy and was not disappointed at all. Thank pancakes for the Yelp! I found myself in BFE looking for some tasty food. I opted for the Wagon Wheel based on the Yelp reviews. As is stated before-this is pretty standard diner fare. I ordered breakfast, I firmly believe if breakfast is served all day then it is my duty to order it for dinner. The pancakes were great, the bacon was crispy and amazing. The service was lacking, there were 2 servers working the small dining room but we still had to remind ours that we asked for creamer for our coffee and even flag her down to order our food. She was good about the coffee refills though and was quick to correct her mistake when she forgot my bacon. Overall it was about what I expected and should I find myself in BFE again I will probably give them another go. read more

Looking for a good place on a Sunday in Alturas this is the place It was very busy and needed the food to go because in Alturas there not many outside seating places almost none if you brought you dog. The lady was very nice, food was ready before she said which is a plus. I had bacon, eggs & hash browns, most places there's only 2 pieces of bacon but there were four. Tasty! Stopped in because of the Yelp reviews. I had the burger, the parents had the fried chicken. And for dessert I had marion/blackberry pie. The parents had the chocolate and also the lemon pie. Pies are homemade. One waitress for a full place on a Monday night and she amazingly kept up with all happy patrons. For being in the middle of BFE the Wagon Wheel was pretty good. read more

This little place is just outside of Alturas. It would best be described as out in the middle of nowhere. It isn't glamorous, it isn't architecturally significant, and it will never be reviewed by the NY Times but this funky little road side café had the best patty melt I've had in long long time. This is a great place passing through alturas and we were looking for a place and found this cafe. The food is delicious just like of you were cooking it at home. The pancakes were not out of a box and so fluffy......my sons had lunch a burger and a club sandwich and my hubby had a big breakfast plate. If your from out of town this is the go to place for locals. that being said please don't sit at the table next to the cash register thats where the older local men sit and talk for hours and hours. I just ate lunch here and had the soup and salad bar. I was amazed at the size of the produce in the salad bar, it was really big. The salad bar had everything I had hoped for except for cottage cheese :(. The soup was cream of broccoli and I added cheese, pepper, and crackers which tasted delicious! As the last review speculated, most people wear cowboy hats and boots in there, but seeming how Alturas is a small town with many ranches, that is to be expected. The waiting staff was excellent, funny, and helpful. When they forgot that I ordered a burger and fries to go, they said "Honey, it's on the house, because we ate your first one!" hahaha I laughed. Stereotypical Americana diner... but in a good way. We stopped here while passing through this tiny town on the way to Burning Man. It featured items like meatloaf sandwiches, apple pie, fish n' chips, et al. Service wasn't speedy but I was just grateful to be eating road food that wasn't owned and operated by a megacorporation. This is a must stop for breakfast in Alturas. There competition for breakfast is slim to none being that most places close down around here. I've been visiting Alturas for the past 9 years and the wagon wheel is one of the constants. The menu features a very wide variety, from pancakes to enchiladas. The tuna melt is literally amazing. I don't know how just try for yourself. The wait staff is a little rude and always has been but I'm there for food. The wagon wheel will actually pack full around lunch time and you'll have to wait for seating so go early! read more

My husband and I stopped here at the Wagon Wheel for breakfast on our way home to Oregon. We ordered one Denver omelet and a side of pancakes. The cook didn't just cut the omelet in half but made two smaller ones - for the price of one. He also did the same for the hash browns. The pancakes were done perfectly as was the omelet . Our waitress was friendly and quick - The restaurant was clean and just right for a small town place. We were so happy we stopped here and will definitely go back next time we go through that area. read more
