We went here because my wife wanted Tacos.We were greeted by Remo, the owner, who seated us and informed us of the menu.The food and service was excellent . The portion was considerable. We watched as Remo was all over cleaning tables, bringing orders, talking to customers and greeting them. His work ethic was admirable. I had the Maui bowl and my the 1988 Tacos .Both were very good. I wish I could give this 3.5. I dislike giving a restaurant three stars unless I have to, but I am also keeping in mind this place is new and had time to improve. Background/first experience: We visited a few Thursdays ago after waiting excitedly for them to open. We got there at 8:28pm only to find their doors locked. Their hours clearly stated 9pm and there were a handful of people at the bar. When we tried the door a couple times to see if there was a mistake finally a man came to the door and said something about opening normal hours in the summer. Another couple followed behind us to get in and turned around defeatedly when they saw this. I know they just opened but we felt like they didn't want our business. Despite this, we decided to try it again. Growing pains. This time it was open until nine like it states online. We got a fish taco platter and a burrito. We both found it to be really bland.... even the rice and beans. I'm not sure what we were expecting but this wasn't it. I went to one of the original Wahoo's in Austin, TX (which is now closed) and I recall their tacos being much more fresh. The fish there was flaky, white and thick. The fish taco felt and looked frozen and the cheese wasn't melted. Like the taco had been left out or something. Also, you have to order food very oddly. We had to get a drink at the bar and then get up and order our own food cafeteria style. I guess that's popular but not my favorite. Give it go. They're new and local and deserve our support. So my wife and I stumbled upon this spot by chance. What a find! The food was fresh and tasty! You could not beat the price. We both got the burritos and the chips and dip side. Stopped in for lunch with some girlfriends during the week. I ordered the Kale Kai Salad and chose a cilantro style dressing. I believe I was given 4 different dressing options. The others were balsamic, ranch and a spicy ranch if I remember correctly. There was decent lunch crowd when we arrived but food came out quickly and we all enjoyed our meal. The food was filling but not heavy and portions are generous (just look at that burrito!). This was our first time at Wahoo's and it did not disappoint. They have a nice variety of options from bowls to tacos, enchiladas, burritos and salads. We started with chips and salsa. I prefer a lighter chip but the salsa was really good - a roasted tomato flavor with a little bit of heat. We also ordered a protein bowl with chicken and shrimp which was plenty of food for lunch as well as a chicken enchilada with rice and beans. The food was hot and fresh. Step up from Surf Taco, awesome atmosphere, easy to order, separate bar for drinks. We went on a nice night and they had the front open. We loved it! I had the crispy flounder burrito with tangy coleslaw, couldn't finish it, very big portions. Talked with one of the owners who was out serving, very nice. read more

Amazing lunch today!! I spoke to the owner of the restaurant as I was waiting for my food and he was so pleasant and valued my opinion of the new restaurant. The inside has a very beach restaurant in Miami feel with a cool bar filled to top of the line Tequila plus several brands of beer on tap. My food came out very quickly and it was so delicious. This is THE place to go in town. Portions are large. Have the protein bowl. The fish is actually fresh - not frozen- and it really makes a difference as compared to other fish taco restaurants. This place is a lot of fun. I have spent considerable amount of time on the West Coast and Wahoo's was always one of my favorite quick bites. I was so happy to see them open up here in Middletown. I'm not a big chain restaurant fan but Wahoo's is above the norm. The fish is really good and fresh. The Shredder sandwich is a highlight item anywhere. The combination of the sauce with the slaw and avocado works perfectly. Especially with crispy fish or spicy Wahoo. Their creamy green sauce is also special. I can dip about anything in that and it will make it better. They also have created a very nice, relaxing space with friendly service. Very engaged and efficient. Great place for healthy, fresh Mexican food. Came here for lunch in the middle of the week on a whim. Pleasantly surprised to see a bar. This adds a really nice option to for a non BYOB in this area. Such a good place for lunch or dinner. I went for a late lunch and got the Banzai bowl with tofu. Veggies were great. Tofu was pretty good. More than anything I was excited to see they had vegan/vegetarian options (tofu, mushrooms, veggies). This is a conditional review, based upon my experience last Sunday (Fathers Day). This place came onto my wife's radar and by extension, mine, after she got rave reviews over Wahoo's signature fish tacos from a coworker. I enjoy seafood including a well made fish taco. So, based upon the endorsement and my love of seafood, my wife offered to treat me to lunch. Fathers Day was her date of choice. This Wahoo's isn't close, but after reading the reviews here on Yelp, I was happy to accept her offer. Well, I wish we stayed home, or went some place closer. Not because the food was bad. It was because the store was closed! We got to this Wahoo's around 2:30pm. As we were parking, I noticed their patio furniture was stacked up to the right and left of the store's entrance. Not arranged for customer use. My worst suspicions were justified when we got to the entrance to see all the lights were out, the doors locker and no signs of life. Also, no notice on the door as to why they were closed. Now, Wahoo's doesn't list store hours on their website (well, none that I could find), but other sources like Yelp, TripAdvisor and the store's own FB page listed they should have been open until 7:45pm. Again, we got there at 2:30p. If there was an exception for Fathers Day, you'd think they would have taped a note to the front door or put a notice on their FB page, but nope. So, we left disappointed. As I told my wife, I am still interested in trying this place, but I will never make specific trip to it again. If they can be unexpectedly closed, when all available indicators say they should be open, that's too unreliable for me. However, if we're driving north on Route 35 and we're hungry and this Wahoo's happens to be open, we'll give it a try. But that's a lot of "ands". Meanwhile, the fish tacos at Jose Tejas and Surf Taco are still very good. read more

This is one of my favorite restaurants from my time in CA, great/fresh food and uniformly friendly service. There was a Wahoos in nyc for a bit but sadly they closed; the location in Philly is ok but has somewhat lost its way and the food quality and preparation no longer matches what you'd enjoy from one of the west coast locations. I'm so glad to have one in n NJ and my dinner there last night was fantastic. It was crowded and hopefully it stays crowded and they stay true to what I've come to love from Wahoos. First timers in this relatively new restaurant. We had a great experience: new food choices...which turned out to be very fresh and tasty; a unique vibe for Middletown...surfer, which was reflected in the furniture, food selections and even the look of the staff; and super hospitality from the cashier who helped us choose from the extensive menu, to the bar tender who ran a tab and delivered our drinks too, to one of the owners who stopped by to ask about our experience and stayed to chat about how he came to transition from a NYC based accountant, to entrepreneur...super nice guy. We will be going back to sample other menu choices. There is ample seating and they have doors that open in the summer as well as additional seating outdoors. You place your order and they give you a locator so they can bring your order right to your table. The service is exceptional! One of the owners as well as the servers kept making sure everything was ok and if we needed anything. They are very friendly and caring. The variety of food options is good for everyone and the fish is fresh which you can definitely taste. Large portion sizes for the price too. Relatively new place with a cool concept. Interesting location being surrounded by several commercial stores, but I stopped in for lunch with my wife after shopping at Bed, Bath & Beyond. Pleasantly surprised with the food, bar (didn't expect a bar to be honest), and general atmosphere. My favorite item was the chicken wings: they were huge and you can tell it's fresh chicken and properly cooked (not frozen and then deep fried). The spirit selection at the bar is impressive, and several local breweries have beers on tap. This place could easily have been in what might be considered a "restaurant town" like nearby Red Bank, but I don't mind the short trip for the quality.
