I went to the Wainright & Wassel dental office on May 8, 2024 in hopes of having tooth 31 recemented and tooth 5 evaluated for a crown. Three years ago Dr. Mark Wainright had recemented tooth 31 and in 2019 remade a crown for tooth 4.  Since I had had problems with both these teeth, I asked if I could have a price break for the upcoming work. I had done a Google search on crowns and was told they should last 3-5 years.  The crown on tooth 4 was a total waste of my money since it did not close the gap between my 3 & 4 teeth as I was told it would do.  Therefore I believed I had a legitimate cause to ask for a price break. I was seeing Dr. Matthew Wassel since Dr. Wainright had a long wait schedule. Instead of being willing to do my work, I was told that not only could they not recement tooth 31, but that I would also need a whole new crown due to some problem that did not make any sense to me.  The crown on 31 did not have a problem before and it was recemented.  I thought this was absurd and told them so.   For tooth 5, I was told I needed to have an X-ray.  When I said they had just done X-rays five months ago, I was then told they would need  pictures.  I disagreed with both and PLAINLY stated I was not paying for either.  I was then told they would need pictures and I agreed with the stipulation that it would be FREE!  I saw no need for pictures for the evaluation.  I had a mirror if I wanted to see the tooth and pictures were of no use to the dental office for evaluation purposes. I was then told they could place tooth 31, but with only temporary cement.  I told them this idea was insane.   Why would I want the tooth cemented on temporarily to then have to go to another dentist office and have them remove the crown to do it permanently? I left the office and went to see Dr. Christopher Powell later the same day, May 8, 2024 and he recemented the tooth permanently with no questions. There is probably the question as to why I did not complain about the crown on tooth 4 back when it happened?  Tooth 4 is a dental implant.  Doing more work on it could create even more problems.  I was trying to bend over backwards to be a "Nice Guy" in hopes I could stay in good relations with the dentist. My complaints to the dental board are: 1. Dr. Wainright told me he could close the gap between teeth 3 & 4 with a new crown and it did not. 2. Dr. Wassel refused to hear me, billing me for photos that were totally useless. 3. Dr. Wassel refused to hear my issues and instead tried to cover it up by stating that tooth 31 had a problem and needed to be remade. 4.  Dr. Wassel refused to hear my issues, refused to consider my complaints and instead penalized me with two behavior management charges. read more

Love the staff. Always professional, personable and they honor our time as we honor theirs by being on time ourselves! All four of our children like them a lot as well! Highly recommend this practice to anyone looking for an excellent practice! Their billing is accurate and fair. Checkout is efficient. All of their staff seems to get along and it shows. They're the biggest smilers too! The renovation done was wonderful and made the waiting area so much more comfortable and peaceful. Coffee, tea and water are waiting for you while you wait. Forgot to brush your teeth before being seen? No worries, go to the bathroom and they have disposable toothbrushes just for that. There isn't a thing they have forgotten. Love them!!! Great staff all the way around!!!! At certain time (read: not often) I feel like I might be paying a slight bit more than I could pay somewhere else. SIDE NOTE -- Something about me; I can NOT stand paying any more than I absolutely have to. For anything. Like, it REALLLLLLY bothers me. (much more than it really should). Forgetting to use a rebate before it expires,forgetting to use my Kohl's Cash before it expires, forgetting to use my coupons, etc. But I digress... Back to the possibility that I paid slightly more at times, (or so I've occasionally wondered ) There's some areas ya just don't skimp, IMO anyway. And that assuming you can swing it. I am a VERY nervous, scared, high stress dental patient dental patient. I am aware of this and I'm working on it, horrible childhood dentist... They know my dental history and are very patient with me and. They can also help me with the nitrous oxide for longer procedures. I keep thinking about the saying that "you get what you pay for". I wanted to share my experience with this dentist and let everyone know the problems I had. I previously went to another dentist in Raleigh for 14 years, but my hygienist moved away, so I decided to try another dentist close to me. My mouth is overly dry, so I went in for cleanings once every three months at my older dentist. I haven't been to a dentist in 10 months because of the hygienist moving away, but my teeth were perfect, no cavities, nothing needed to be done. When I went to this dentist, they did the routine exam and told me I had a few teeth that had some small cracks and needed fixing. They wrote me up for a plan and had me come back into the dentist for the cleaning and fixing the cavities. I waited over a month to get my teeth cleaned, had anxiety today because of the cleaning, and went in at 2 pm. They took me in the back, and I told them I didn't want my cavities fixed today, just the cleaning, the lady said ok and then gave me eight shots and checked my teeth. The hygienist then said I don't think I'm cleaning your teeth today; you need some deep scaling. She got me up, took me to the front, gave me a new sheet of paper, and said it would be over $2000 lol. Couldn't they have told me I needed this before? Why couldn't they still give me the normal cleaning and have me come back for the deep scaling? She could have gone ahead and cleaned my teeth, but she wouldn't because she said without paying that extra money and getting the deep scaling they didn't want to do anything. So my mouth is still feeling gross, and I have to make a new appointment with my old dentist. So beware when you go here, it seemed to me like they just wanted to charge as much as they could even tho you might not need everything. The prior dentist I went to see ten months ago never said I needed to fix three teeth or have the deep scaling done. This dentist didn't want to charge me the $150 for the routine cleaning, they told me I had to get the $2000 cleaning, or they wouldn't do anything, wow. I'm so upset! All the shots and the anxiety for nothing. I'm going back to my other dentist. UPDATE (July 17): I wrote a review, and the owner of the practice Emailed me to explain I was all wrong, they couldn't do the regular cleaning and have me back later for the deep cleaning because that was malpractice. I called four other dentists who said it was no problem to do the initial cleaning and have me back later for the deep cleaning. The owner also seemed to get upset in his Emails to me and called me "Bud" when he was replying, which isn't very professional. I don't like the high prices, the anxiety, the way I felt, the way the owner acted in his email replies and how they couldn't clean my teeth unless I spent the $2000. I'm going to several other dentists this week to check out how they treat me, and I'll gladly update my review at that time. read more

So -- the September 1 update I promised. This dentist office shall wholeheartedly retain its 5-star rating from me, as well as a big shout out from me to all of Raleigh: if you need a dentist, GO HERE! Everyone on the staff is awesome (to me, "awesome" is an over-used word, but in this case it totally applies). They did my cleaning first which was fine, even though it had been a little over a year since my last cleaning. After that it was over to the dentist's chair where Dr. Wassel did a fantastic job of undoing shoddy work, and then re-doing good work, from my previous dentist. No kidding I didn't feel the needle (either time) and the whole experience was quite remarkable for a dentist appointment. They didn't even mind that I brought along my iPod to drown out the noise (I hate the noise!!). The insurance estimate came in a little lower than they'd projected, which was a nice surprise, and I bought an electric toothbrush. Floss, people! read more

I was a new patient & came in for a cleaning, check up, evaluation of pressure pain & sensitivity in a couple teeth & a chipped tooth that was bonded & redone by other dentists 3x over the last 9 months. The bonding was rough & kept coming off. Dr. Pope & Deborah addressed all these issues & actually listened to me. I was nervous & talked a lot but they didn't mind. I left the office with a new crown to fix my back molar taking care of the pressure& sensitivity & with an extra smooth, solid front tooth! Dr. Pope bonded & reshaped my tooth to my liking & my front teeth look better than they ever did. I'm so pleased with this Dental group from the moment I walked in & met the front desk ladies to the moment I was walked out by Deborah, my dental technician. Very organized & well run practice. Best. Dentist. Ever. They say you can judge how good a Dentist is by how many people are in the waiting room, and that was definitely true of my last office. I was always the only one in the waiting room, and felt like they only did the bare minimum, which led me to Wainwright & Wassell through a recommendation. This office is busy, but extremely efficient and true to appointment times, and I was never left in a room for ages to wait on a doctor. They have all of the latest technology, and even something as small as providing glasses to protect from the overhead light made a huge difference! They recommended a couple of minor procedures that would be beneficial in the long run, but never pressured me to do it, and offered payment options upfront. They walk you through everything in a way that is easy to understand, and the dental assistant was extremely thorough. I'm one of the rare people that already love going to the Dentist, but this was one of the best experiences I've ever had. Highly recommend! read more

The way we usually find a doctor or dentist is to use our handy-dandy insurance companies recommendation and go to the closest office to our home or work. In the past, this usually makes for us being satisfied with our service. But this time? We hit the dentist jackpot! My husband was the one that went first for his cleaning and to get a crown fixed. A crown that the last dentist had done and then fixed for about 2 months and still never got it right. Guess what? One visit with this office and my husband has no issues with his crown. I slacked on keeping up with my teeth...and I knew this so it was no surprise when I had a handful of cavities and a scaling that needed to be done. The best part? Dr. Wassel is a pro at giving a shot. No kidding, I never felt a thing. Even when he states it will sting for a second, you don't feel it. I also liked that I never had to wait for hours after my appointment time to be seated. And the fillings were done fast! They do a lot of in house work here, so you won't have to drag out your appointments which is nice. Time is money and they apparently take that seriously here. So satisfied that we had them see my son. They will definitely be keeping our business! I have a crown that also needs fixing and I am sure to be happy with it when they are done! I love coming to Wainright and Wassel. The staff is always kind and welcoming. They have appointments outside of normal business hours, which is a MUST for me. Who knew a 7 am dentist appointment could be so pleasant?! They have TVs for each chair, a nice waiting room with water available, and the receptionists are always so nice! I love that they never push services on you just to make money like I've experienced with other dentist offices. Everyone that works in the office is friendly--from the reception staff, to the dental hygienists, to the dentists. The intake was two appointments back to back (I did mine on consecutive days), one where you have x-rays taken and another where you have a cleaning. Since I partly chose my dentist after moving to the area based on Yelp! reviews, I feel it necessary to write my own and confirm others' reviews for Wainright & Wassel. It's hard to think that going to a dentist is a pleasurable experience, but they do their best to achieve just that here. The office is large, with different areas dedicated to regular cleanings versus dental work. Their equipment is new, and while their procedures seem current and maybe even progressive, they are not excessive. The staff are all incredibly friendly, and they were so accommodating for my busy schedule at my initial cleaning, which I truly appreciated. I also really appreciated that when I had dental work done recently, Dr. Wassel took his time to make sure things were right the first time around. I would much rather have an appointment that lasts 20-30 minutes longer than have to return on another day. Overall I'm very happy that I looked to Yelp! when choosing my dentist, and even happier that the reviews steered me in the right direction! read more

I can not believe I have been a patient for over 20 years and I have never thought about writing a review on Yelp. My experience yesterday and all the other times has been that the front desk personnel are sweet and efficient. Dr. Wainright and his son are both excellent dentists. They never seem to do any unnecessary work to get extra money. They just do what is needed to keep your teeth healthy. And the office manager Debbie is wonderful too. Lastly the checkout is always efficient and kind too, especially Debbie number 2, at checkout. I don't want to tell you who my dental hygienist is because she is too good to publicize.But you can't go wrong at the office, our family is certainly proof of that. My favorite thing is the fact that you can schedule 7am appointments, super convenient if you need to be at work early. My experience at this office is actually why I'm pursuing a career as a dental hygienist. At other offices, I remember being roughly prodded during cleanings and feeling like no one noticed or cared that I was in pain. Luckily all the hygienists I've seen at W & W are harmless- very gentle. They actually check in with how I'm doing and I appreciate that. The hygienist I see most often, she makes the experience especially enjoyable and gets me laughing every time! The whole team, I would describe as warm and friendly- like a family that you are immediately a part of. During one of my visits last year, I heard an 85 year old woman in the waiting room bragging about how she not only has all of her teeth, but how Dr. Wainright as been her dentist since his practice first opened up back in the 70's! I doubt she's left a review but from what I heard, she has a lot of good things to say. Finally, my experience with the front desk has also been very positive. At my last visit, I had dental insurance but no clue what it covered. Instead of having to call and find out for myself, the receptionist did it for me. I had a long-time provider that recently retired and was left a dental orphan (so sad). I was drving by the W & W building and was drawn to the professional exterior and appearance. I parked in the lot and checked out the various dental office facades. I selected Wainright and am glad I did. I had been going to an old-school dentist where my condition was not being addressed. The dental work they gave me was fine, but they have no idea how to communicate with insurance companies or with their customers. I got three separate bills for one trip. The first bill was for my copay, the second bill was because they did work that the insurance company wouldn't cover even though they said that my insurance would, and the third bill was because they underestimated the second bill and wanted even more money. Granted it sounds like my insurance sucks, but this office set expectations for how much I was going to pay multiple times and failed to come anywhere close to their estimates. I paid almost triple their initial price and now I can't afford the rest of the fillings they say I need. Time to find a new dentist. read more

I did not go to the dentist for a long time due to lack of insurance and financial issues. This not only took a toll on my teeth, but also on my self-esteem. I knew my teeth and gums were unhealthy and I didn't like my smile, but I still did not go. Fear also kept me from going to the dentist. I have had previous bad experiences and although I wasn't happy with myself, nothing hurt, so I put off going to the dentist and told myself I'll go soon. Soon didn't come soon enough and I had a toothache. I knew I had to be seen. After getting a great recommendation for this practice from Shane Jones, I decided to try them. I was teary-eyed and embarrassed when I called for an appointment. I didn't want anyone to see how badly I had neglected my teeth. From the time I called in May to make my first appointment until now, I have become a loyal patron of Wainright and Wassel DDS. They are not only very professional, they are also very knowledgeable about new technological advances and have always taken great care of me. I fear pain, but Dr. Wassel always ensures I am comfortably numb (lol) before any procedure. Janise and all of the staff there are wonderful and very supportive, especially with scared patients! From the time I enter for my appointment until I leave I feel like I am a part of a very kind family who is there to support me throughout any procedure I have done. I have never had pain during a procedure and my pain, if I ever have any after a procedure, has been managed as well. I rarely have pain after procedures, but there are some procedures, like today's tooth extraction, that will inevitably be sore afterwards. I will not stop going until I get as close as I can to how my teeth were before I started neglecting them and then I will keep going to maintain my teeth. If you want professional, knowledgeable people who are also kind, funny, and take the fear out of dentistry, this is the place to go. I would recommend the practice to anyone (and I do all the time). I just can't say thank you enough for all the genuinely kind people who got me in the door and have kept me coming back. There is no reason to associate anything but positive things with dentistry at this practice. If you're looking for a new dentist where you will be taken care of like you are family, look no further. This was by far, the most positive experience I've ever had at a dentist! The staff was all so helpful and cheerful, they truly seemed to want to "get to know me" not just get me done and out of the chair. Debra was so informative, helpful and funny and "Dr. Bruce" was a master at making my crown and making me feel comfortable. No doubt they are good dentists. They have a very nice office and a friendly staff, but I take issue with the amount of work they want to do. We tried them based on positive reviews on Yelp and were shocked that in spite of years of excellent dental care in Northern Va, they wanted to do thousands of dollars of dental work on each family member. We sought a second opinion (actually two), and neither dentist found the problems they did. If you want healthy teeth and a nice smile and still have money left for groceries, you may want to look for another practice. read more

This place is great! I had a problem with a filling that another dentist in Charlotte had filled and they worked me in immediately. Not only did they fix my pain but they pointed out additional issues that were missed. Dr. Wassel is thorough and he explains to you what you need to maintain proper oral health care. At age 40 I hadn't been to the dentist regularly, and when I did go it was a very unpleasant experience, both administratively and procedurally. I had terrible pain in a molar and finally decided to try and pick a regular dentist. I went to Wainright & Wassel based on Yelp reviews and I'm glad I did. The entire staff is wonderful. Dr. Bruce took care of me and is amazing at what he does. I don't handle the pain so well but each time I've gone he's done a fantastic job at numbing me up and getting the job done quickly and efficiently. I get a sense that he sincerely cares about patient well-being and trust his advice, and I don't trust many people. This dental office was exceptional. I was actually a part of the exam process...sometimes doctors talk as if you are not there, these doctors made sure I had an active role in my dental health by making me aware of what needed to be done by showing me instead of telling me something that was too complicated to understand. I have been a patient of this practice for the last ten years. If only I could have doctors in every specialty like the three of these dentists, I would live to be 110. I have never been treated as special or cared for better by anyone. I drive over 900 miles from my home in Naples just to get my dental work done. I tried to get a well known, highly thought of dentist in Naples and failed miserably. Dr. Mark Wainwright winced grimly, yet repaired the damage that had occurred. Christine, wow, more than a hygienist. Incredible, professional and caring. At one point, all three dentists came into observe the crude work that had been done to me in Naples and all made matching comments. Dr. Wassel is the best dentist ever! I recently had to go in to have some fillings done and a partial crown, my experience was comfortable from start to finish! My fillings blend in nicely with my natural teeth and my crown was made in office! I didn't have to wait two weeks to get it!!
