Located on Waiola Street in the heart of Honolulu is this gem. Famous for their delicious shaved jce. When ordering don't hesitate to get the ice creams and condensed milk. The service is great! The store is small and has lots of merch. Overall it's a must stop if you plan on staying on the south side of the island.
Waiola Shave Ice has been operating for at least 20 years now, and located in a residential neighborhood away from shopping centers and malls. I remember my father taking me when I was in Elementary School, and for nostalgia sake, I decided to return after work. Open everyday from 11a-6:30p, its rare to see a local mom and pop shave ice shop open that late. The shave ice was as good as I remembered it 20 years ago. Can't wait to get the azuki bean one next.
This is a spot I go to whenever I am in Honolulu. It's a great price with so much flavors! I love their tigers Blood with lychee, ice cream and condensed milk! I would give more but the people serving you are not very friendly. But hey, you're just there for some shaved ice so it's ok! Haha! They also have a little store in the back to get some li hing candies or other goodies! Super small location in a neighborhood. Parking is ok too it all depends how busy they are during the day but they do have street parking and parking to the right of their store if you're facing it. But definitely one of my go to spots! Must try!
I've been going to Waiola's the past 20 yrs and have tried other shaved ice places but...This is best shaved ice in town! The consistency and finely shaved ice makes it my the best. My go to is the rainbow shaved ice with vanilla ice cream. It can get packed at times but parking is super easy, and rarely is it hard to find a spot. Lastly, they have super cute merch. I would put this on top of the list of shaved ice spots to visit when in town in Oahu!
This is my favorite place to get shave ice in Hawaii! I usually get lililkoi and guava syrup which is always really fresh tasting! I always get ice cream on the bottom and li hing mui powder on top. If you're not local, you should give that a try. Its s popular crack seed in Hawaii from plum seed so it hint of bitterness with the sweetness of the fruit syrup. Delicious!!! Or ONO we say in the islands ! There are a couple benches out front so you can hang out and eat without making a mess in the car. Also check out the store which has lots of other snacks. The lady and keiki's that work there are always so nice, so be kind back to them!
I've had my fair share of shave ice on the Hawaiian islands, and this one was just so disappointing. Yes the ice is soft, but the syrup flavors all tasted the same and was just meh. Also, if you ask for mochi they put it on the bottom so you have to dig it up and save it for your last bites which makes no sense. The service was super strange too. The workers don't greet you they just stare at you and you just have to talk and say your order to them. Not a fan, go to Ululani's (the goat).
A fairly popular shaved ice place recommended to many. You can get an affordable shaved ice for $4-8 depending on the size and topping. As we wanted to get to another place quickly, we opted to pay a little more for DoorDash pickup which came by pretty fast, but you lose a lot on the presentation as it is like an ice plate instead of shaved ice pile on top. This won't be my first and last time trying shaved ice, but it is something worthwhile to consider if you want the presentation. As for the shaved ice, I wish the texture was more smooth. I bit several chunks of fairly large ice and the liquid syrup tasted a bit artificial. We got the Obama rainbow which had cherry, lemon-lime, and passionfruit, and the passionfruit was my favorite while the lemon-lime tasted like cleaning liquid.
I can see why this shave ice is so well loved and rated very high. Waiola is in a residential area but has a parking lot and some street parking. Theres also a cute store inside with tote bags, stickers, and tee shirts, and some other snacks too. As for the shave ice, the ice is really fine and soaks up all of the syrup. I got a small POG and lychee with condensed milk. My boyfriend and I ordered really quick and got our order within 5 minutes. Even though the ice is really good, I felt like their syrups were a bit lackluster and it tasted more artificial to me. My boyfriend really liked his, since he tried their melon and Thai tea flavors, which I thought were decent, but I couldn't help but notice the artificial taste for all of the syrups. I like how affordable this place is, and maybe I should've tried something else, but POG and lychee were one of their popular flavors.
First of all, I would like to say this place is good. I don't consider myself a connoisseur of shave ice, so keep that in mind. While on Oahu, my fam tried about 4 different places and I would say this is relatively on the lower end of the scale :( Again, I would like to point out that I thought this place was good. I ordered the Obama Rainbow with condensed milk. I think it would have been better with mochi but they sold out for the day at that point. Flavors were solid (as much bad flavored syrup on ice could be I guess), but for some reason I wasn't getting a 'wow' factor. I should also not that I was most excited to try this place of all the shave ice places we hit up so maybe it's unfair. We got their right before closing which would explain the mochi situation. Someone in my party had to ask for a but more syrup because they missed a spot where it looked like it just ice. I think they were in a hurry to close down cause it all felt very rushed. I would go back if I visited Oahu again, but probably would lean towards a some of the other places we went to. read more
The hubby and I am went to Waiola Shave Ice during the middle of the week, when it was full sun and 84 degrees. Since we just had a big lunch, we decided to share a small shave ice. Big mistake, because we have very different palates and because it was so good that I wanted it all to myself. I'd normally get lilikoi cream with condensed milk, adzuki beans and mochi. But since I was sharing, I went the safe route with the Obama Rainbow and added condensed milk. It was $3.50, very finely shaved and the flavors were very good. Another review stated how they were stingy with the syrup. I had the exact amount but there definitely wasn't any extra at the bottom of the cup, so a tad more would've been nice. The line moves fairly fast and there's plenty of bench seating to eat, drool over everyone else's shave ice while soaking up the sun. read more

If you go to Hawaii and didn't get shave ice, did you really go to Hawaii? Ice cream is great and all, but shave ice in Hawaii is where it's at! This is different from your typical snow cones or shave ice that you get in the mainland since the ice here is so soft and fluffy! It literally melts in your mouth and is not crunchy whatsoever. Of course I needed to stop by the famous Waiola Shave Ice which was seen on Hawaii Five-0! I ended up getting the mocha bowl and adding mochi balls since I'm a huge coffee lover. They have a bunch of other fruity flavors and other toppings so something will be sure to catch your eye. Highly recommend stopping by here on a shave ice run on your next trip to O'ahu! read more

A must when you visit Oahu! I had the red bean and was not disappointed some of the best I have ever had and I can't wait to go back. We went at the end of the day and they were out of mochi, so I suggest going early in the day if you want the full experience! Definitely know what you want when you get to the window - this place moves FAST and doesn't mess around. come for the yummy stuff, not the service lol Super cute bench and mural on the side!! read more

Waiola is prob my absolute favorite shave ice place on the island! The ice is so refine and soft that it is practically a slushy! They have a wide range of flavors to pick from with many toppings if you'd like. They are a local business with another location in Honolulu so you should support them in every way possible rather than many other overhyped shave ice businesses! read more

Delicious shave ice that we could enjoy while sitting on benches under an umbrella. Plenty of options to choose from for size, flavors, and any extras you want to include. I recommend the cup size, especially for kids. I had a bowl and probably only ate half by the time it melted. Maybe I was eating slow and enjoying the moment. They do accept cash and card. Parking is decent. read more
Only $3 for a small. Place is overhyped and I feel like you can find better places for shave ice. Flavors got tiring real quick and watered down quickly too. Great price though. Wasn't as great and mind-blowing as the other shave ices I've had. read more

Used to live in the neighborhood and would walk here all the time to grab shaved ice. Nice to see the place hasn't changed at all in the 16 years I've been absent from the hood! If you're visiting Hawaii this should be a must see/experience! read more
A local shaved ice location in Moilili made famous by President Obama - and in his honor, there is a shaved ice flavor named after him; as well as other notables like Hawaii 5-0; POG (passion orange guava). A previous reviewer states that the ice is "shaved" much cleaner and finer than the other popular shaved ice place...I concur. Best to fortify the shaved ice with azuki beans (sweet red beans) and vanilla ice cream - it's a combination worth trying. I ordered the 5-0 with the azuki beans + ice cream...pretty good combination. You need to visit and find your favorite flavor profile, just make sure you add the extras. Located in a residential area off of McCully, it's a true "locals" place with tourists visiting. read more

Azuki bean bowl - Shave ice with a special homemade sweet milk flavor, topped with loads of azuki beans, mochi balls on the side, and dressed up with condensed milk. This tastes more like an Asian dessert than shaved ice although it's still really good. Red bean pairs well with the shaved ice Guava and passion fruit shaved ice was pretty good. Holy moly, rude young gal working the counter taking orders and money on a Saturday! Let's just say, it must just be the norm because if you search rude in the search section for the business you'll soon find out this girl is extremely unhappy and rude to a lot of people who need any sort of help. It's really intriguing when a person can be rude without even saying much. Basically she got really annoyed to the point of huffing and puffing because I didn't realize they don't have a small size just a cup! I'm sorry, that put you in the worst funk I've seen in anyone in a very long time. Ok, so blame me and say well you should read the menu. Fine. The point is, you have customers that come wanting to give you business and pay for the shirt on your back...treat them nicer. It won't take that much more effort, was a real Soup Nazi experience. The older gentleman making the actual shave ice seemed really nice, showing me the difference between the large bowl vs a cup. The worst part is the shave ice was just subpar. The syrup isn't drenched into the middle of the shave ice which is fine but almost lacks the flavor you'd want in a sweet treat. The mochi was bad excess starch coats and linger in your mouth, over cooked and too big of pieces in my opinion. All I know is I'd love to go back for the snacks inside the shop but won't be returning as this girl working there will have a heart attack if I ask a question. Best shaved ice in Hawaii. We've tried shaved ice from Kauai, Maui, and Oahu. This is the best! The ice is so fine like powder. Literally melts in your mouth. I got the Hawaii 5-0 and my wife got the POG. Both are super delicious. But it's the ice that makes it. We've tried others like Matsumoto's and the difference is the ice. Matsumoto's has more syrups and swag than any place we've been. But you can't replace great powder ice with more syrups or swag. If you want really awesome shaved ice. Then this is it. On another note, the customer service has always been a bit on the not so happy side. Always seems like when we go there, the person has always been not helpful, not happy, a bit rude, and for some reason, it's always been different people and same person to person vibe. But with the shaved ice being as good as it is, I'll take a negative person to eat the Bombest shaved ice. read more

A local friend of mine recommended Waiola Shave Ice for their super fluffy shave ice and tropical flavors. I highly recommend this shave ice if you want a soft shave ice versus Matsumoto Shave Ice which is more crunchy. The mango flavor was so good and I loved the Li Hing Mui (sour plum) powder on top! I also got mochi toppings that were at the bottom of the cup. I've been here in 2020 and had to return again because I loved it so much! read more
In my opinion, the GOAT when it comes to the shave ice game. Cliche to say, I was literally raised on Waiola shave ice. My grandmother's house in McCully is a few blocks from this iconic Hawaii institution and some of my fondest memories from childhood are littered with Waiola experiences. Ever since 1940, this little mom & pops store has been serving up classic shave ice to locals and tourists alike. The consistency of the ice is what sets this shave ice apart from all the others. Buttery smooth, melt in your mouth perfection that perfectly locks in the flavors of whatever syrup you choose. I keep it classic with a Rainbow every time i go but was recently turned onto the local hack which is to add some lilikoi cream drizzled on top. Each bite I have takes me back to memories of post little league & pop warner games, afternoon family potluck outings at Ala Moana beach park, and hanging with my grandparents. I know there are many players in the shave ice game in 2021 but for me this shop has and always will be number one in my heart. read more
Come here for fluffy shaved ice! You get a choice of two flavors. We got guava and lilikoi with condensed milk topping and ice cream on the bottom, but I had a hard time discerning each fruit flavor (minus one star). I loved how fine and light the shaved ice itself was (no crunchy ice chunks), but that also means that it melts even faster. There were a few people ahead of us in line, but service is fast. Once you get your treat, you can grab a seat at some benches along the building. Parking is free in the lot next door. Although Waiola's isn't my perfect shaved ice, I'd still come back and recommend this spot! read more

First time coming here and surprise surprise, I got the azuki bowl with ice cream and haupia and li hing mui. I requested it with the free ice cream promotion. For some reason I got this mixed up with Wailua Shave Ice.... Haha oops! I really enjoyed Wailua's toppings and flavor so when I tried Waiola, my expectations were a bit high. Nonetheless, the shave ice in Waiola is good. The azuki bowl reminds me of halo halo especially with the ice cream addition. I think I would've preferred to try the haupia with condensed milk and chocolate and withoutttt ice cream. (Just my preference haha) I think the ice cream made the shave ice melt faster(?) and resulted in a soupy kind of dessert. I'll try a different flavor fosure. Next time! read more

Pro tip: order one of their specials to get 3 flavors. If you choose your own, you only get 2 flavors. Also get a scoop of ice cream under your shaved ice and condensed milk drizzled on top! It makes it sooo much better What i order: Hawaii Five-O (cotton candy, lychee, passion fruit) Straight up I love Waiola. This location is no frills located in the middle of a neighborhood. Parking can be a little hard to find if you can't get a spot in their parking lot but drive around and try to find street parking. There's a reason they're still around after so many years and the line is constantly down the street.. but luckily it moves pretty fast. I don't go anywhere else when I'm in honolulu because they have the best shaved ice on the island. There is something about how finely shaved their ice is that makes it completely absorb their syrup, and it just melts in your mouth without being icy. I've never purchased anything within their shop though as it's often very overpriced. If they're selling spam musubis that day, this is the only other item here I highly recommend! read more
We didn't really have Shave Ice planned for our trip, but found time on our last day to stop by Waiola Shave Ice. Cash Only and they have a parking lot to the side. I'm not a big fan of snow cones, which is what I assumed Hawaiian Shave Ice would be like, but I'm so glad we tried it! The shave ice was so soft, which was not what I was expecting! I probably wouldn't get the flavors I got again though (Uncle Joe's Rainbow) Strawberry, Vanilla, and Coconut ($3 for a small). I liked the Strawberry and Vanilla, but would probably want more of the fruity flavors if there's a next time. read more

I use to come here all the time as a kid. Agree with me or not, but I think this is the best place on the island to get shave ice. Really glad that they're still around, so that my children can experience what I did. They have so many flavors to choose from, but my personal favorite is the azuki bowl which comes with azuki beans and mochi balls then topped with condensed milk. You get to pick your base flavor, which I always get haupia (coconut). read more
One of my favorite shaved ice places on the island. I tend to go in the middle of the day during the week to avoid any sort of crowds. There is a small parking area for Waiola that usually isn't crowded when I go during the week as well. I change the flavors of my ice every time I go as you really can't go wrong. I always get it with vanilla ice cream on the bottom & condensed milk on top. Best way to have shaved ice honestly. Will be continuously coming back here when I can. read more

Came before and had to come back. Came here since I wanted to go to the OG location (more reviews and on Waiola St so I'm assuming). Was so surprised the first time I had it. It's not quite shaved snow like in Taiwanese stores but it's definitely much smoother than your ordinary shave ice. For comparison, we had shave ice from a food truck and it didn't come close to touching this. Located in a small storefront, it's mainly just for the shave ice. Dedicated parking lot. Wasn't a fan of the banana flavor so I won't get rainbow flavor (strawberry, banana, blue vanilla) again. My wife liked the mango. There's a sign saying what are the most popular (rainbow) flavors and what flavors the owner likes (tropical). Might try the tropical ones next time. **Definitely recommend adding a vanilla ice cream scoop. Takes it over the top and reminds me of Italian ice and gelato. Would definitely recommend! Curious whether other places come close to here. Also the service wasn't the friendliest here but they were nice enough and to give them the benefit of the doubt it was near the end of the day. read more
One of the best shave ice I've ever had! Definitely recommend trying with the vanilla ice cream inside. The line looked long when we got there but it actually moved pretty quickly. Our order was ready not long after we placed it too. There's a small store there as well that had some snacks and merchandise. Grabbed some li hing candy, which had a hearty serving of li hing - so good! The place is located in a neighborhood so parking can be a bit hard since most sidewalk parking is taken. There is a small parking lot but it was mostly always full. Ended up parking a block or so away so it wasn't that bad. read more

strawberry & lime shaved ice (1000/5): perfect. amazing. delicious. best shaved ice i've EVER had and nothing will ever compare to waiola. i got the same shaved ice combination 3x during my 5-day trip to oahu, i miss it everyday and this would be one of the many reasons why i'd like to come back to hawaii. i added mochi which made it even better. It's also very affordable, my bf and i both got the large bowl for $5 but if i came back i would get the jumbo for myself for $8. my bf and i loved it sm that we got waiola tattoos for fun. waiola is family owned & everyone was so so nice. i highly recommend coming here over any other shaved ice place on the island. it can get pretty busy on the weekends but since it's shaved ice, it comes out so quick and people just sit and stand outside to eat it afterward! read more

I have to say we had a lot of shaved ice throughout our short trip but Waiola takes the win. We made this our last pit stop of our trip and got there right when they opened. So didn't have to experience a wait. The shaved ice itself is great! The ice is shaved so fine which how I personally like it BUT it still has the crunch! They had a variety of flavors. Me being basic, went with just two flavors. My brother got eat more flan and wow he devoured it so quick I wasn't able to snap a picture! He said it was his favorite one out of the trip. They have a cute seating area off to the side where you can be out of the sun. You can also take pictures with the cute statues they have outside! Great for kids. I'd say get there early due to limited parking and it is in tucked away in a residential area. But don't let that deter you! Come get your shaved ice on! read more
PLEASE SUPPORT LOCAL! I saw Waiola's news article and really wanted to support their family owned business. The owner is so hard working, kind, generous, AND makes the best shave ice on the island. The ice is so fine, which absorbs the syrup flavors really well. This time, I got the lilikoi and lychee with mochi balls and ice cream. Delicious as always! There was no parking in the lot, as well as no street parking nearby. We ended up parking in the lot for the park. read more
Who doesn't love shaved ice on a warm winter day in Hawaii?! Waiola's has a variety of flavors to choose from, in my pictures you can see the size difference between a small and large. For me the small was perfect, although not as aesthetically pleasing as the large size it was the right amount of shaved ice for me. Parking can be a little tricky during busy hours if their parking lot is full you better be good at parallel park on the streets. There's not much to complain about when it comes to shaved ice so I'll go ahead and end this with.. GO GET SOME SHAVED ICE ! read more

I don't believe so. The syrups don't taste like the fruits they are supposed to resemble.
