What a beautiful visit to Wally's. it was my first time at this spot and I definitely don't think it'll be my last. One of the best parts about being a working professional is the occasional dinner out with your colleagues. My boss was in town and wanted to take a few of us out and chose Wally's for the occasion. This place is definitely so LA, when we walked in the doors were held for us and we were quickly greeted and seated by the lovely hostess. After talking shop and perusing the menu, we opted for a bottle of bordeaux. Super delicious and served in super classy, giant and thin wine glasses. To start, we had hummus, the endive salad, and the baked brie. Everything was delicious! My favorite being the endive salad and baked brie. The salad was tossed in a delicious vinaigrette with walnuts and cheese. The baked brie was great served in toasty bread and shaved truffle on it. The truffle made the brie super flavorful. For my main, I opted for the Steak Frites. Cooked perfectly medium rare (more rare than medium - my favorite way to ask) with yummy french fries and all of the bearnaise + ketchup. Totally great! This is a formidable institution dedicated to wine and spirits, but oh, the wines... I remember the original store in Westwood, which always stocked excellent bottles from around the world. When they opened this place I was in heaven. We've been a few times now, and what's great is you can buy wines and drinks by the glass, plus order some food, including impressive charcuterie. They also host events, tastings, etc. Or maybe you just crave some top of the line caviar? We recently went on New Year's Eve and I had a very good Negroni, while my spouse had an excellent red-- and we had a delicious charcuterie board. I'll be honest, it wasn't the best experience. The hosts made us wait with no acknowledgement when we first walked in - not a great first impression. We had a reservation (for my husband's birthday) and they sat us at a community table while open 4 tops sat next to us. The food came out before our drinks. We reserved a table for 4, two of us came on time, two were late, but the hostess refused to show us to the table and told us to wait outside until all the guests arrived. We were very surprised, but she said that they have such a rule. Strange, but we have been here before and there was no such rule, always one of the guests is late. We spent the day in Santa Monica. While doing some shopping we came across Wally's which we had heard so much about this place so we went inside for a couple drinks. I was impressed on the large selection of Domestic and Foreign Wines they carry. Im sure anyone that comes here will find a Wine to enjoy. Since we had plans to eat elsewhere we ordered some appetizers served fresh. A glass of wine I could not pronounce, sorry. Overall service was good atmosphere was open inviting and well decorated. Let's call Wally's what it is... a sultry date or pickup spot for the wealthy on the Westside. If you love wine and cheese and price is no object, then you have found your Magnum Opus. But... if a fine palette is also your thing, then you will enjoy yourself, but the divinity of flavors leave a little something to want for. It's not the selection that's the issue, there are some wonderful items on the menu. It's the flavor details that leave a little something desired, even though the presentation is quite good. Highlights this evening were the: -Beef Tar Tar - very well done, served with toast points and under cooked potato crisps. The Tar Tar could use a bit more flavor. -The Burrata was a wonderful dish, complete with candied almonds in a fig jam. Very delicious flavor. The fig crackers were a bit stale. -Truffle fries for the table were a hit, but we had to send them back for being undercooked - maybe the fry guy was off this evening. -The Pizzas: we had the truffle and the hot salami. The truffles were a bit weak in flavor and there wasn't enough salt. We ordered park to assist, but it was also lacking salt. I'm not one for over-salted, but if you don't have enough salt to carry the flavors, well they just don't go anywhere. The spicy salami was good - a bit over spiced and had a lack of roundness of flavor. Ospi definitely does this better. -Service was a 10 - the hostess, Carly, was a gem. Our server was intelligent and timely and the bus boys did a wonderful job clearing plates, etc. Management was also great. The place was very clean, well lit, professional, etc. My summary is it's a very fun atmosphere for the wine and cheese enthusiast and for anyone looking to have an upbeat date or feast with friends. I think the kitchen needs to keep trying things as they are prepared to ensure quality of flavors at this price point. All in all recommended. read more

Wally's was a happy accident! When told we would have to wait for a couple of hours to be seated in a nearby joint, we dared to be adventurous and ended up here. Now we have a new favorite place. Sarah, our server, was very nice, very patient and explained everything well to us newbies. Jonah, the manager, was very friendly and accommodating. And the food! Sumptuous, flavorful and reasonably priced. We definitely would be back to try the other items on the menu. I can't believe more people don't come here. Came here for brunch. First time I ever dined at a Wally's. They have one in BH too. Got the french toast, steak/eggs, and lemonade. Was soooo good. Great service and they have outdoor seating. I would def come back here again and try other brunch dishes or meals. My friend also found one of her fave wines here. The brunch menu is short, but fab. Sorry... we did not enjoy much.. too expensive for a lobster pasta: usd 45.00!!!! We could not see the lobster or taste it, all I saw was the pasta .... Told the manager: where is the lobster.... He said: it is there ... just keep looking...u just can't see.... OMG!!! I said: can u bring some please? He said: no sorry... We ordered pizza pepperoni, again .... Too salty and was not tasteful...it had on it: caramelized onions!!!! Yewwww it was not pleasant...then we ordered : hamburger was weird ... meat tasted raw and the ketchup had a weird taste, hard to swallow... The fried potatoes were saggy and overdone ... and the salad yew.... we spend $200.00 in 4 dishes that were not impressive... we did not have any alcohol....also the waiter asked if they $45.00 lobster pasta was okay .... The person handling the distilled alcoholic beverages was great and provided us with interesting Japanese whiskeys that had to either come through Germany or was the only bottle in the entire west coast. Rosy and soft notes of utter bliss. The person handling the wine, however, was not as great and seemed not as knowledgeable. He didn't recognize the Australian red we ordered and tried to get us to get a "French" wine instead. He then commented that the Australian red we ordered "wasn't bad." Not sure what to make of that or his response to our comment that there was a typographical error on the menu that had the wine name wrong. Based on our experience, I am hesitant to refer to him as a sommelier. Only ordered the tuffle pizza. The base of the pizza was good but overall wasn't so great. Getting out of here is probably going to require hiring someone, but these guys are losing another customer. (I have noticed lots of empty lockers so perhaps they sold the building.)
