Dr. Fierson is amazing. My mother in law had severe double vision for years. Every doctor she saw told her it was not correctable. Even the ophthalmologists at the university hospitals. Dr. Fierson took her on as one of his few adult patients. He agreed to operate and cured her double vision with one procedure. We only wish she had come to Dr. Fierson sooner. read more

Doctor Fierson is great, but the waiting time is just unacceptable! We usually had to wait about an hour after the actual schedule appointment time just to get the initial eye check with the doctor's assistant. A good two to three hours total waiting time after your scheduled appointment. Like I said great doctor but the waiting time was horrible. read more

This place is great. My 2 year old son was experiencing eye redness along with a lot of eye mucus. I originally took him to urgent care where they examined him for no more than 2 min, told me he had pink eye and prescribed antibiotics. After a week on antibiotics his eyes were not getting better . So I called Dr. Fiersons office, I told them my situation and they squeezed me in for that same day. The staff is friendly ,you feel truly cared for there. Dr. Fierson was great and was able to give me actual education on what was going on with my sons eyes. I left there feeling so much better because I understood what was going on. The office manager told us that the doctor charges a separate fee for refractions on top of what they charge our health insurance. I told them that the refractions are on the authorizations and we shouldn't pay anything out of pocket. We were told that the doctor won't see my kids and they are willing to let us go as patients even though we've been going there for years. The worst experience I have ever had in my life. The doctor has the worst attitude, looks like he is sick and tired of his job but doesn't want to give up making money. The staff is very depressed and walking on needles.. I would highly recommend you go elsewhere. We went to his office for my sons glasses and these guys are expensive!!! His office charged us $400 for his glasses. We ended up going elsewhere and they only charged us $20 for the same prescription and glasses. Mr. Fierson is basically an assembly line when it comes to seeing his patients. He only gave us 5 minutes at the most. He as a patient scheduled every 10 minutes. And when it comes to answering questions, his common answer is "he'll be fine, give it time". Our impression was we werent at his level to understand pediatric ophthalmology. The wait time is terrible and when its time to be seen, they want you to be already sitting down so when he comes in he can do his check up. Dr. Fierson is a miracle worker. He has been my Opthalmologist for years now. He is very compassionate, warm, easy to talk to, and always makes time to listen to whatever questions or concerns I have regarding my sons eye care. This is one of the BEST dr we can ask for! Yes, the waiting is long...b/c he has LOTs of clients.... Yes, he doesn't talk much...(he is not here to social!) He did my 8 mos a perfect surgery! Better than I can ask for. You can not even see the stich! It was only few days after the surgery. Dr Fierson doesn't talk much and it made us worry in the beginning... However after the surgery, he showed us how he remove the cyst in all one piece! I really appreciate his skill and understand why he doesn't talk much... b/c he focus on his JOB! read more

We began looking for a pediatric eye doctor for our son when he was diagnosed with fourth nerve palsy at 6 months of age. We took him to another recommended Dr on the west side before deciding to go with Dr. Fierson. Both Dr's were highly recommended to us by our pediatrician as well as our own primary caregiver which was pretty much enough for us. (We just had to choose between them.) It was not an easy decision and a few things I didn't like about Dr, Fierson's office were offset by the attention to detail I got from the Dr's assessment. He noticed things and suggested things the other Dr. missed and that professionalism is what made up my mind. I'm very grateful we did make that choice too because my son is now 100% and did not (so far, knock on wood) need any repeated procedure. Due to the effect it was having on him becoming mobile and all the studies he suggested to have the surgery done before he turned one. That was three years ago today and his eyes are perfectly aligned now with no vision issues whatsoever. Disclaimer: I must admit that the wait times are ridiculous sometimes but I account for them and it's all good. He isn't the warmest fuzziest Dr I've met (bedside manner wise) but I'm not so concerned about that personally. Another note, I tend to avoid having him sit in my lap in the exam room until the nurse warns us he's coming which she always does. They like to have kids ready to go when he comes in to speed things up I'm sure but having an infant or toddler in your lap for 10 minutes is ridiculous and pretty much impossible. I was referred to this Dr. due to the fact that he is a pediatric ophthalmologist. My child needs to be seen by him in order to make sure her vision is developing properly. The office staff is nice and sat me isolated from the waiting room due to the fact that I have a newborn. The waiting room is chaotic and there are children everywhere. Dr's office definitely overbooks also Dr. Fierson shares office space with an optometrist. I will warn you that the particular eye exam that my newborn was subject to is not for the faint at heart. The staff dilated her pupils, Dr. Fierson saw her about 20 minutes later and used an instrument to keep her eyelids open while he used another instrument to look inside the eye and make sure the nerves were developing properly. My optometrist diagnosed that one of my daughter (5 years old)'s eyes was farsighted, while the other was normal. She suggested that my daughter starting wearing glasses otherwise she might get lazy eyes. I decided to get a second opinion, and asked around for a pediatric ophthalmologist, and was very glad that we went to Dr. Fierson. The place was very crowded and the wait was long, but Dr. Fierson definitely knows what he is doing, and is very knowledgable. He explained to us in detail what his observation and diagnostics was, and as well as his advices. The staff might be rushing things a bit, but I don't think they are rude, after all, there is a long line of child patients running around and waiting to see the doctor. Dr Fierson was recommended by my son's pediatrician, he helped his son with the same condition as my son has. He is a specialist in strabismus. The office staff is amazing they called me to make an appt they got us in within the week of them calling me. We arrived and they did their due-diligent with check temps etc. We got there the staff was helpful and kind. The nurse let me know prior to seeing the Dr, he is quiet and silence from the dr isn't a bad thing he is doing the exam. He did a through exam on my son and suggested for my son to wear an eye patch for 2 hours a day to help strengthen the his eye. I got more from Dr Fierson then i got from the original ped ophthalmologist we saw, she kicked us out the door and told us to come back in SIX MONTHS . We have now seen Dr Fierson 3 times the first visit took 3 hours as they had to dilate his eyes for the exam and to run other tests, we were told this when making the appt. so we didn't feel blindsided. I have had nothing but good interactions with this office and I am happy that we are here. read more

Dr Fierson is one of the best around, especially when it comes to your child. Very happy with the results but he explained the issue to us and answered all of our questions. It took us about 2 hours for the process, but it was because testing takes time, it's not like we were sitting there just waiting. Staff was great. He handled our daughter as a Preemie 19 years ago, so when we were referred back it was another good experience. All the doctors we had to see regarding this issue told us he's the best around and we were in good hands. read more

Wow if I can give no star I would. We have been customers of Dr. Fierson for 10 years!!! My mother in law took my son to last appointment visit and they gave my son future appt. My husband and I had no knowledge of this and after 10 years all of a sudden they are calling wrong # to tell us of appt. We got no message so missed appt. And they charged us $75 missed appt. Fee. We called and telling them we didn't know they said we will waive $75 but next appt. Will charge. In other words dont come if u do we will charge. This is 10 years of thank you. We said okay give us medical records they said $25 fee. This office has no mercy on long time patients. They have unnecessary fees. Shame on them for 10 years of business i gave them. Edited to update based on actual experience: I was able to schedule an appointment for both of my children (2.5 yrs and 10 months). The staff was really informative and our visit was pleasant enough for a ophthalmology appt. There is a good chance that I will return for our follow ups as the experience left us with a better impression than our scheduling/illness issues. Actually, they waived the fee and I didn't even have say anything about it. Dr. Fierson really did explain things to my husband and I in a way we could really understand, so overall we are satisfied with our experience. Original post: I am going to start with a 2 star and then update accordingly. I had an appointment scheduled for a Tuesday at 1 and of course had intentions of keeping the appointment. My kids are 2 and 8 months. We get sick. A lot. I called the office to ask if I should still go in and offered the list of symptoms, they suggested we still go in. That was fine, but we had an urgent appointment scheduled with the pediatrician for that morning since they were both so sick. We ended up stuck at the office getting a breathing treatment and being told we were still contagious. I called the office and left a voicemail indicating as such and if I could get a call back. No call back and received a bill of $75 dollars for the no show for my son's appointment. I can understand having to pay a fee due to not keeping an appointment, but $75?! That is ridiculous. I now have a very soured opinion of the office, but seeing as I hear he is "one of the best" I will reschedule and go in and will update thereafter. read more

I brought My daughter to this practice to seek treatment for her Chalazion on her upper lid. Upon arrival we were checked in very quickly which was nice, but downhill from there. I have to say the biggest frustration with this practice is the disorganization of the entire staff. I myself work in the medical field and am familiar with medical practice processes and organization and this has got to be one of the worst I have encountered. We were moved from room to room about 5-6 times, in between moves having to wait inside the crowded hallway with at least 4 other patients and their family members until staff figures out which rooms to put who in. Extremely unprofessional and disorganized. It seems they were taking on too many patients at once and it was a chaotic mess with staff yelling to and from the rooms and across the hall in front of waiting patients. Finally, doctor came in to see my daughter and we were aware that it was a chalazion but he then said nothing of what could be done to treat it, instead we were told she had to dilate her eyes which was not necessary. This extended our time here another 1.5 hours, Only to be told after dilation that there is nothing we can do to treat it but wait it out and put warm compress!! Our appointment was over two hours long only to be told there's nothing we could do at this time! The eye dilation was done without them first explaining that there is no treatment for the chalazion, and was unnecessary but likely done so they can bill "extra" to insurance. I'll also mention that the practice is outdated, extremely old equipment and lacks the new technology offered in other practices. Today was a frightening day for my 22 month old daughter and I! We did not know what to expect when we walked in for a consultation with Dr. Fierson. We were pleasantly surprised at how efficiently we were able to get the answers we desperately were seeking! Dr. Fierson was direct, knowledgeable and empathized with my emotional self after the diagnosis that my little one needed glasses! While the equipment in the office isn't fancy or brand new, I loved how The Dr was able to capture my wriggling, wiggling Daughters attention to get the tests done! After the consultation, we walked over to find the best fit frames for my Miah. TRACY IS LOVELY! She was so kind and patient while I dramatically rummaged through different colors and styles, took a ton of pictures to get my husbands advice on style and she even helped me keep My little one busy while I wrangled with her to get the glasses on! For some reason the doctor visit for today was extremely long wait. It seemed that one of the nurses was just picking who she thought and looked ready to visit just by grabbing random files on the side. I wish she went by the order of patient coming in or by appointment and went down the list to see who was ready to go. Receptionist would say they will check what's going on but would forget after checking a new patient. Good doctor but just beware that if it seems like the wait is just really long than usual then keep asking the nurses and the receptionist because they tend to forget. read more

Dr. Fierson is very good with kids and very quick and efficient. (Paradoxically, he is in such demand that there can be some wait to see him. Never fear, he has a waiting room stocked with toys and videos to entertain waiting kids.) His office also has an optometrist who is very good at helping kids find glasses that are appealing but also durable with a good warranty policy (very important for a five-year-old). She helped my daughter find a lens in a particular style of that avoided the Coke-bottle look despite the strength of the prescription. Also, I have already gone through a very painless warranty replacement process. (While the recommended frames are nearly indestructible, even the toughest polycarbonate lenses can scratch.) I highly recommend Dr. Fierson's office for Dr. Fierson skill with kids and for their optometry service. ... It's been a year since I posted the above review and I'm back to say I still appreciate the great service my daughter (now going on 7) gets. My daughter has been getting checkups every month or so as Dr. Fierson monitors the progress of a long term treatment and I think this dedication is going make a critical difference in the quality of vision my daughter will enjoy later in life. Dr. Fierson and his staff are kind people with an incredible amount of knowledge and expertise in Pediatric Ophthalmology. We had a half dozen office appointments leading up to my son's surgery so this review is based on extensive interaction with the staff and doctor, as well as time spent in the office. Our story: My son's eye had suddenly gone permanently crossed and we went to three doctors before we were directed to Dr. Fierson. My son's father had recently died of cancer so we were highly anxious leading up to our visit, knowing that "the worst case scenario" can and does happen. Dr. Fierson's staff quickly worked to get an MRI authorized at my local hospital so we could have results before we went out of town. We were fortunate to have benign results and after a few more follow ups, it was determined that surgery would be needed to correct both eyes. The staff knew I wanted the soonest date possible at the facility of my choice and kept me updated on possible cancellations so I could keep my schedule open. We did end up getting an earlier date and, again, the office was very accommodating as they fit in our pre-op and post-op appointments on short notice. In early October 2016, my son had a very successful bilateral strabismus surgery and he was back to normal the next day. I posted a picture on Yelp of the amazing results. The office: The office is in a nice location - there's plenty of parking, there are shopping centers a short drive away, there's a great park across the street, and there are peacocks roaming the neighborhood. That's not something you get to see everyday! The waiting room does get busy. Many children are having refractions and have to wait a specific amount of time. We were always seen promptly for our exams. There are toys, books, and a DVD playing to keep kids entertained. The exam rooms are slightly cluttered and outdated from a decor standpoint, Aesthetically speaking, an upgrade would be nice. But this should not be a reason for one star reviews. The quality of medical care should far outweigh wanting an office with modern furnishings. The staff: The staff is efficient and can multitask excellently. Because this is a speciality office, there are a variety of patients and conditions being treated, infants through teenagers. The front and back office staff do a great job of remembering who needs what. We always had our follow up scheduled quickly and courteously before we left each current visit. They accurately communicated with our insurance and there were no surprises when we had copays etc. Tracy and Violet were particularly helpful and we're grateful for their dedication to the office. The doctor: Dr. Fierson has extensive medical expertise. He has practiced Pediatric Ophthalmology for years. He has been featured in numerous publications and has overseen the American Academy of Pediatrics - Ophthalmology division. These are really important accolades to consider for someone that is being trusted with your child's eyesight! My first impression of Dr. Fierson was that he's serious, direct, and no-nonsense. He doesn't come in to the room to small talk, make jokes, or entertain your child. This lack of warmth may be off-putting for parents, especially parents trying to wrangle small children that need to be still for the exams. However, the more interactions we had with Dr. Fierson, the more I realized that he is a brilliant doctor with a kind heart who has many, many patients to help. In a perfect world with high insurance reimbursements and endless time, I'm sure the doctor would lavish attention on every patient. When surgery day came for my son, Dr. Fierson was perfectly attentive, described exactly what he would be doing and what we needed to expect, and made sure we were able ask all of our questions. This place is for adults or kids who can follow Dr. Fierson's direction. Dr. Fierson may be a good doctor for those I just mentioned, but for a young kid like my 2 year old, it was a nightmare. She was so afraid of Dr. Fierson since he wasn't patient enough and he was pretty cold to kids. She wasn't cooperative since she was afraid and Dr. Fierson just walked out and had nurse come in to calm my daughter down. Dr. Fierson found a tumor in my husband's right eye when he was 2 years old. His mother had been misguided and ignored since he was an infant until he met Dr. Fierson. He diagnosed my husband's eye condition as retino blastoma and he immediately had him treated. Unfortunately the cancer was so aggressive from being untreated and misdiagnosed by the other doctors, his eye had to be removed. Now 36 years later we've taken our 18 month old since she was born to get her eyes checked with Dr. Fierson. We've been blessed with her eyes completely cleared of any possibility to having the cancer herself. I am sad to hear doctor has retired from his private practice. We have another baby on the way and were hoping he would still be around to examine our new little one. Dr. Walter Fierson was recommended to us many years ago as THE pediatric opthalmologist for our son. We have been seeing Dr. Fierson for 16 years, with two of our three sons- one of our sons has perfect vision. His reputation as the best is well deserved. Two of our sons have amblyopia or lazy eye, though not due to a weak eye muscle that can be tightened by surgery. Over the years, there have been other specialists who touted expensive therapies not covered by insurance. Dr. Fierson has always stuck to the gold standard in all the treatments he recommends for varous conditions. He also has literature in his office and in every patient room, explaining various treatments and their expected outcomes versus the occassional 'new' treatment that is unproven, and frankly, doesn't work. Over the 16 years of often monthly visits, I have rarely noted a problem with the wait time. His services are in demand, and his staff has always been considerate and explained any undue delays. Example: He often sees premature infants and those exams do take longer and if a serious problem is detected, there will be delays. For yearly checkups with refraction, a child's eyes are dilated. Children with lighter colored eyes - less eye pigment- dilate faster than children with darker colored eyes who have more eye pigment. This means that sometimes, a later appointment will be taken in ahead of an earlier appointment and it has nothing to do with any kind of favoritism. Most of the time, even though we are in a clearly full waiting room, we can be in and out within 45 minutes or less of our appointment time, from start to finish. His office is always clean and some kind of Disney or Pixar movie is always playing. He has flashy, noisy, fun-looking toys and gadgets in the patient rooms that are guaranteed to keep a young child looking in the right direction for the exam. He doesn't use them so much for the older children and I think they appreciate that. He clearly is in the right profession and loves children. He always wears cute, funny ties. His characteristic entrance into a room of "Hello, hello, hello - how are you? How is everyone today?" is actually very comforting in a world where change is just a mouse click away. read more

I've taken my daughter with Down syndrome here for several years. Plan on spending 60-90 minutes in the packed waiting room and about 5 minutes with the doctor. Arriving early only means you'll wait longer. His office manager was on her personal phone while we waited for glasses options. She told me several times it was worked related despite me not asking and me trying to change the topic to glasses which we've never gotten before so I am unfamiliar with the process. She showed me two frames and she repeatedly acted like cost was a problem/concern. She said she wanted to tell me about anti glare and transitions just so I wouldn't hear about it from other parents on the playground and wonder why I wasn't offered. I'm not sure how that has anything to do with my decision making process for my child's healthcare. Thankfully I got our prescription and I will happily pay double somewhere else if I never have to deal with her again. The entire office is very apologetic for the waits but since I've been going there for more than 5 years I can assure you the wait is the standard because they overbook patients. The two stars is because the staff is very nice and the doctor is very knowledgeable. The office experience isn't worth it. read more

My son has been a patient with Dr. Fierson's office for about a year and a half and all I can say is I'm very grateful for him and his staff. I had no idea that he was living with double vision until Dr. Fierson diagnosed him and was very quick to schedule him for a correction surgery, and for that I will always be grateful. I am so appreciative of Dr. Fierson and staff! My 10 month old developed tissue growth and redness in one eye over a matter of days. I was concerned for his health and reached out to his assigned ophthalmologist at Loma Linda Hospital. They could only offer me an appointment three months out! Unreal! Luckily, I found Dr. Fierson's office after doing some online research. My son is not their patient, they are also very busy with appointments, yet they understood the need for my son to see the doctor and gave him an appointment a day later! The staff are professional and kind, the office is clean, and the doctor is very knowledgeable and takes time to explain things. The wait time is a bit long but I can see why. They want to ensure all patients needs are met! The doctor diagnosed my sons condition and after one drop of treatment, my sons symptoms improved by 90%. I'm so appreciative! read more

Everyone is polite and professional there. The issues I have with this place are 1 the wait times are ridiculous, appointment at one walked to the room at 130 then doctor came in at 145. 2 This doctor has to do mandatory refraction tests which is fine but your told go back and wait in the waiting room for 25 to 30 min. We waited another 40 minutes before I went and asked how much longer, they took us to the room again and said a few more minutes (my sons eyes were dilated so he didn't need a second dose of the drops) we waited another 15 minutes for the doctor to come in. This office is over booked. Every seat is taken some people sat on the floor. So even if you don't need an eye exam and are referred here from your pediatrician for a bump on the eye exc, your child will still have to get a full exam. They also only accept medical insurance which means your medical insurance will most likely deny the bill and you'll pay. Upfront we paid 120 and was there for almost 3 1/2 hours. HORRIBLE!!! The wait is extremely long and the doctor is a JERK. My 3 yr old was patiently waiting on his home health nurse's lap for more than 20 minutes in the exam chair (not including waiting more than an hour prior to be called in). I was right beside the two of them. The doctor came in, saw that my son was not facing forward so he walked right back out, left and went to the next patient...without saying one word. Didn't even ask me to turn him around like a normal human being/professional would! It would've taken me 2 seconds!! I was in disbelief and it made me extremely upset. We grabbed our things and left. I have always followed instructions by remaining seated with my son on my lap but I guess they forgot to tell me THE KIDS CANNOT FACE "THE WRONG WAY". Unbelievable. Two days later I received a letter in the mail from this office charging me a fee of $75 for "cancellation". The penalty fee was later waived after calling the office to share my outrage. That fee was a slap in the face on top of the nonsense that happened at the appointment. The assistants in the office all walk on egg shells and seem to be very afraid of the doctor. They police everything the patients can and cannot do. I feel really bad for them because at least they seem to understand the parent's frustration but they seem to have no choice but to listen to this ridiculous doctor. I wish these ladies all the best. I will NEVER bring my son back. Side note to Carol Fierson; please do not attempt to cover up, deny, downplay or discredit this review as you have done with every other negative review. I made an appointment for my 21 month old daughter with Dr. Fierson. I was not trying to get a vision test done because I knew her vision was perfectly fine, but wanted an appointment because my daughters left eye (only seen when pictures are taken) doesn't shift as well as the right. So I wanted a second opinion, even though I had taken her to the peds office and they said it was Normal. Dr fierson is from the dinosaur ages. Everything in the office is literally older than I am (30 years old). Besides that, they refused to just take a look at her eye, but rather have done a complete workup which included dilating her eyes and I wasn't ok with that. They actually said. Well what if she has a tumor in the back of an eye! I meannnn, really???? They said he will refuse her as a patient if he can't do the whole comprehensive workup. How can you do a "comprehensive workup" with equipment that old? He first looked at her and said it's normal. If it's normal, why am I doing a vision test? Anyway... that's not why I'm writing this review. This place is a boot camp! No eating, no standing, pretty much don't do anything that pisses the doctor who's 90 years old off. Parents must sit and I was being spoken to with an attitude by him when all I was trying to do was calm my daughter down from being scared of him. To top it off, HE'S SOOO BAD WITH KIDS!!!! He didn't once speak to her or try to calm her. I mean why work with children if you're this mean?! The toys in the lobby are probably his 50 year old children's' toys, yet he had a 100k watch on his wrist. If you can wear that on your wrist, you can update the office from the stone ages to "a bit more modern". Not only is this test "2-3" hours long, but she can't even have a snack and I'm supposed to starve a toddler for his benefit? I wasn't even allowed to bring my cup of coffee in since adults just go spilling coffee (had a lid on it and probably two sips of coffee left) around offices or something. So ridiculous. I paid $175 for an "office visit" and all he did was look at her and used drops to dilate her eyes. My advice is find a younger doctor who is more modern and doesn't give the parents attitude when dealing with their kids health.I don't know how he's still in business or has even survived running a business this long. Maybe because he's one of the only doctors who treats kids under 2... or maybe I didn't research hard enough, but never will I walk into this office again. read more

After reading some of the negative reviews, I still decided to take my daughter to Dr. Fierson, and I am happy I did! He is an excellent doctor and he is an expert in his field. If you read the negative reviews they are mostly about waiting or prescription glasses. Wel,l let me tell you, I want to take my child to a good ophthalmologist, and guess what, it's not only me, but most of parents! He is good and that is why he has so many patients, waiting for 20-40 min for an appointment is common thing everywhere, we wait for our regular pediatrician for 2 hours sometimes and we still go to him, because he is great! Dr. Fierson and his stuff work very hard to give us professional and excellent experience! The glasses are very good quality and sell for very reasonable price and best of all we got a new pair for a very small fee when my daughter scratched them, I thought we would have to buy a new one again!
