I love the wild prairie dogs where I live in North Lubbock. Today I was outside and I saw a white pickup with the words "Lubbock Prairie Dog Department" logo on the side of the door. I saw a man laying down flat, he appeared dead or injured. I went over to see if he needed help. He jumped up and yelled out to me. I couldn't hear him so he drove over to me. The white pickup truck had a water tank in back with a hose. He had a cage in the front seat. I thought he was poisoning them. He stated that he was flushing them out to catch the babies. I told him that the babies need their mother. He said "not anymore" He said that he sells them to Walter's world of Pets.I told him Walter's was the worse. I told him that this was illegal and asked for his name but he refused to give it. I went back to get my cell phone to get pictures but he took off before I could get back. I called animal services, texas parks and wildlife rangers, as well as the police to make a report. I also called Walter's and asked where they buy their prairie dogs and the guy on the phone answered trappers. When I went on my speel, a lady grabbed the phone out of his hand and stated "we buy them from a mating facility" the first store clerk had already told me the truth. So if you own a prairie dog, think about how it was stolen from it's mother right out of nature. Walter's is a horrible place. Wildlife deserves to be free. read more

I purchased a lop bunny from them today and less than an hour from purchasing I discovered the rabbit had fleas. Immediately called them and the Mexican girl was very rude on the phone and told me to bring it back and made it seem like I don't know what a flea infestation looks like. I brought the rabbit back and they told me I can give the rabbit back and pick another one or they can spray it with mite spray! Which would kill it since rabbits have extremely sensitive respiratory systems. I've owned rabbits for years and was horrified by the lack of care and the handling of the rabbits. They couldn't even tell me the brand of pellets they were feeding so I could buy some so it doesn't go into GI stasis from the switch. I immediately took the rabbit I swapped the flea riddled one with to the vet because I noticed it had nasal discharge and after running tests they discovered it has a respiratory infection and worms. Moral of the story don't buy animals from shady places and listen to the negative reviews they have merit!! read more

Second review to add on to my horrible experience at this business. For reference my last review is the one with photos of my sons marks after our ferret continued to attack him. My son never got close to this ferret because he knew this ferret was aggressive. Although employees knew she was aggressive I was never told how bad it actually was. Because she never bit the owner, they would joke about it when I would go in asking for help and advice. I did everything they told me to do. The attacks got worse and had no choice but to take her back. I expected empathy from the owner. Maybe another ferret in exchange. He responded with sarcasm anger and cuss words. He cussed once at me but that is more than enough. He did resell this ferret not even two weeks after I returned her. I didn't get a refund. Or another ferret so you know he made double profit. He told me he didn't. Which makes no sense to me. I can bet me a** he sold my ferret at full price and proceeds to tell me he can't give us a new ferret for our troubles. He's a large man so he should NOT be talking to women the way he does. It comes off as aggressive and scary. Be aware and shop elsewhere read more

We are from out of town but thought this place looked like somewhere we would like to stop. We spend quite a bit of money on reptiles and such and we are always looking for the next best pet/reptile stop. My husband went in and took a look around and asked a couple of questions about their inventory. I guess they thought we did not speak Spanish but they were very wrong. After they made the comment that they hate white people, we no longer wanted to spend any money in this place. We won't be back. Prices seemed higher than what we usually see and did not have many exotic pets. We don't mind traveling to get top quality reptiles/critters but won't ever travel to this establishment again. Too many other places that do respect their customers to bother with this place again. read more

If I could give zero stars, I definitely would. Long story short, I gave this place good money for a bird that died in 2 days. The owner and it's worker blamed me for starving it because I didn't buy the cage and the food from their store. It's ridiculous to blame your customers especially since they have zero proof. The workers did not go over any "special treatment" this bird needed if it needed a specific food or what and why would I intentionally starve a bird? I was heartbroken by the situation and was given ZERO empathy. Anyways, this place has bad reviews already and I should've done research before giving this place business. The owner also goes off on anybody who gives him a bad review, that's also sad. I hope nobody goes through this situation like I did because it's awful! read more

From my research I've heard amazing things about Walter's World of Pets, during my visit today I was not disappointed. I was greeted and asked if I needed help immediately when I walked in (startled me a little because I'm not used to that anymore, but hey). The store looks much bigger from the outside, but actually managed to hold a variety of products and pets you wouldn't normally see at your average petco or petsmart franchise. The products look good and authentic for reptiles and mammals alike, they even have clearance stuff just incase! Their selection of pets and their knowledge on them is what pleased me the most. They have a great amount of very unique creatures in their facility such as: Tegus, Tortoises, Hedgehogs, Ferrets, Chinchillas, Mice, and many others! Today, I got to go in and see many of these beautiful animals wonderful taken care of in good sized tanks and cages with clean homes and amazing caretakers. I was able to be helped by a younger girl and she let me see one of their hedgehogs as she told me about them and all the other pets they get in their store. While I'm still waiting to get my future pet, I'm happy to know that I can come to them! read more

We bought a couple of pet turtles for our kids along with everything we needed for the turtles. They were extremely helpful. And when we got home and took the turtle tank out of the box, and one of the pieces was broke, we took it back and they exchanged it no problem. In ordinary circumstances I would chalk our experience up to a bad day for a small business. We all have them. But the series of "misses" and the call from the owner wanting to "fight" because of how his employee was supposedly treated...makes this review necessary. My experience started 1.5 months ago when I went into the pet store and selected one of four hand-fed baby conures, from the female owner. She was very knowledgable and and very interested in finding the bird a good home. I later went in after deciding to purchase the bird for my son's 8th birthday and paid half down with a check. The check was cashed the same week. I recorded in the notes line that I would pick up the bird in 3 weeks on May 9th. I later called back and scheduled to come in on May 8th (a Sunday) after I returned from being out of town for a week. I told the female owner that I wanted to pick up the bird on a weekend day, as to allow time to acclimate, before heading to work the next day. She said to call first and meet her at 1:00 on Sunday. When I called (as we were driving in from out of town) I was told she was out of town and would not be meeting me. I had my son with me who has now been waiting 2 weeks for his birthday present. He was a bit excited! So we went to the store and told their weekend help that we wanted to pick up the bird, not to worry about asking someone to drive in. Upon arrival the employee was completely overwhelmed with customers. He then had to clip (aka butcher) the wings of the conure because they were not done according to plan, ahead of time. This was very traumatic for both the bird and my son. He also asked if I had talked with the owner about my down payment check (of course it had already cleared my bank). Then we went to collect the specially ordered bird cozy hut for his cage. This had not been received, so we had to shop for it elsewhere. Next we were supposed to receive bloodwork determining if the bird was a male or female. The paper perk was not received either. The $300 bird was then put in a dirty cricket cardboard cricket box for our journey home. The bird is amazing and is a gift to our family. He is pure happiness! The call today to my husband's phone (from the male owner) with cussing and threatening statements, is not appropriate and what West TX Small businesses are NOT about. I generally have fantastic experiences at Walters world. But for over a year now one of there main staff mid 20's, dark hair, and patches of facial hair. Has always been extremely rude and gives me the worst items they have for feeders. For fruit flys it's always a culture that hasn't even been started or one that's finished and is about to stop producing. For crickets it's always ones that are way to large and he claims it's all they have. Today I needed a medium rat for my snake. He brings out a rat about 3 inches long and charges me for a medium. I told him I've never been giving a medium rat that was even close to that size. but if he insists on a large then I will exchange for that. He then brings out a rat thats about 8 inches long and tells me they have nothing in between. He always makes me feel unwelcome and that Im getting ripped off. read more
