Showed little interest in helping with bike selection, grilled me on which company I worked at, compared my asking if there are sales to getting a paycheck cut at work, said "this is what you're doing to me". I was in need of getting my wheels trued "aligned" so so I stopped by, they have a really great pricing compared to 3 other shops I called,my wheel truing came out great. I dropped my wife's bike off 10 days ago for some maintenance and repairs. They said it would be 7 days before they could start work on it. 7DAYS! That's not what I call service anyways I had the bike at the shop so, I left it. We'll call you when it's done! I explained my wife uses the bike for work and if there was any chance of getting back early it would be greatly appreciated. I called today to find out, oh yeah it's waiting for pick up! I have a bike that needed a tune up, called Walt's and they quoted a 3-4 week lead time on repairs, and suggested I bring the bike to the shop to get in the que. When I arrived, Mark helped me, he spent a fair amount of time looking the bike over and determined it only needed a new tube and tire for the front (I came in with rim only) and said he'd replace it on the spot! Then he sold me a small bottle of oil, that he showed me how to use to lubricate the brakes, and within 20 mins I was walking out the door, with my repaired bike + brake oil, all for only $50. Mark was very helpful and super friendly, it was a pleasure to do business with Walt's Cycle, I will go back there again! read more

I took my beach cruiser in to have the back tire repaired. I was charged $30.00... you'd think for that amount they would at least reconnect the brakes. What a rip off. I called to discuss and the punk was like whatever... what a rip off!! And what poor customer service!! Thankfully I wasn't in an accident!! read more

Decent bike shop, though the selection of entry-level cruiser/hybrid/comfort bikes (for my wife) can be a bit limited. Still, there's a bike for everyone at this store. The staff is generally helpful and they have done good work on my bike when I've come in for service. The tune-up cost for my road bike is about on par with other shops, but for a more recreational bike the cost doesn't seem to justify getting service here. read more

I feel it worthwhile to leave a warning to others seeking service for an older bike. I brought two bikes in I hadn't used in years but wanted to clean up as a gift to my wife. I was told by the mechanic that the repairs would be worth more than the bike. That would be fine from a cost perspective but the sales guy at that point told me my cables were stretched and my shifters were bad and that I should look at new bikes. I did so for a while but being cautious I went home to think and in the meanwhile had a knowledgeable neighbor look at my bike with me. In 15 minutes we had the shifters oiled and working and a 30 second alignment of the front derailleur fixed my other shifting issues. I almost let them convince me that my bike wasn't worth saving and that turned out to not be true at all. I'm not sure if they believed what they said, but to cap it on my way out the sales guy said "if you find any other bikes on the side of the road, feel free to bring them by too". I'm sure he was trying to be funny, but I definitely took offence and decided I wasn't coming back. My father in law had decent experiences here and I've heard there is at least one really good mechanic at the shop, but definitely take any pitch at replacing your bike out even the parts with skepticism. read more

I have special needs for a bike right now. Due to illness, I can no longer ride a 2 wheel bike. Yet I miss biking so had to find a 3 wheel bike. Many places don't carry 3 wheelers and I wanted something sturdy, comfortable and safe. As I cannot drive right now, I phoned them, they had what I needed and Tim even delivered it to me on his day off, for which I am so grateful. He took precautions in delivery which I also appreciated. I love the bike! It's got everything I needed and the ride is smooth, as is the pedaling. Most importantly, I feel safe on it. Walt's has been in business a long time so I was comfortable doing everything over the phone with them. Bike riding is one of the few things I can do for exercise and to get myself mobile again. I'm really glad Walt's is my neighborhood bike shop. I had my commute bike stolen and so brought in my backup bike to be fixed up. Jim was very honest about what my bike needed and didn't upsell me at all. He tried to help me as much as possible given I'm a student and money was tight. Another time I had a flat coming off the Caltrain and came in to use the tire pump, hoping it'd get me the last mile home. Jim took a look at my tire and told me the inner tire was too shredded to be pumped up. Even though the store was closing, he had someone quickly replace my tire so I wouldn't need to walk home. The staff here have always been friendly, courteous, and honest about what I need for my bike. I really appreciate Walt's! read more

My bike just needed a bit alignment in back tire, while entering the shop a mechanic told me this " your tire is done, you better buy a new one", i asked him you did not even touch my bike! He told again rudely "better buy a new one"! Then i checked at their bikes, most ordinary bikes are selling for $ 600 - 700 min. Is this how you should run a bike shop ??? Been coming here for years. My wife and I bought bikes here 10 years ago, and the older owner took good care of us. When our kids were old enough, we brought them here to get good bikes. Jim B, the GM walked us around, and showed us everything, explained it well and helped us buy the right stuff. Since, then our kids have gotten multiple flats, bent rims, broken handle bars, etc. Every time we come down, JIm B takes great care of us. Hes a good dude. The staff is very attentive and knowledgeable. No one is perfect, but this is a good old school bike shop with good people running it, and good service. Highly recommend. read more

Seriously the most arrogant and condescending shop I've ever had the displeasure of interacting with. I'm not a serious biker--I just need a bike to commute to work, and it looked like my current bike's wheel was pretty torn up, but still ride-able. I went in and stood around for 10 minutes or so and stood around until the owner asked me what I needed (to be fair, it was pretty busy, but some initial acknowledgement would be nice). I asked him *for his advice* whether I should get a new bike, or just fix up my old one. As far as new bikes, I asked how good of a bike I should get, since I only ever ride it about 30mi/wk, so something lower end should suffice, right? He comes back saying I "obviously wasn't looking to spend money" so I should just get my old bike fixed. Uhhh... what? I'm in your store dude, asking you if I should buy a new bike. I was kind of miffed, but I went on to ask one of the repair guys in the back about getting a new back tire for my bike. He said to just leave the bike with them and they will do it for me and it would cost about 100. I went on to ask a bunch of questions like what comes with that 100; do they choose the wheel part for me (since there's large variation between different wheel frames)/does it come with the rubber wheel also/do they do all the installation, etc. The guy says to "go out, SAVE SOME MONEY, and come back when you decide you want to replace your wheel." And then "I have to go talk to some real customers." ...... Since I'm a gigantic pussy, I didn't make a fuss, but hell if I'm ever going back to this place again. I just wanted to know how I will be billed. No one just leaves their car at a mechanic without knowing what's going to be done to it, why should I do that with my bike? Heads up, Walt's Cycle, constantly implying your customers are poor(???) does not make them want to shop there. If I could rate this place negative stars, I would. read more

I went to Walt's to purchase a new bike, and any accessories that I might need with it. The people here really know their stuff about bicycles. Upon entering, I was greeted by a young boy who couldn't have been older than 12. I assumed that he was just a greeter of some kind, who would go get a salesperson once I told him what I was there for. However, he turned out to be the salesman. This initially made me apprehensive (how could a child so young know enough about bikes to effectively meet my requirements?), but he very quickly impressed me with his knowledge and helped me find a bike that so far has been a great fit for me. One thing that I really appreciated was the honesty here. While at the store, I quickly Googled the bike model to see if I could find it cheaper online. It was lower than most, but the original manufacturer was actually selling it for ~$40 cheaper than the cost offered in the store. I brought this up when I went to pay and asked if they could price match. The price was already very reasonable, but I'm always trying to save any money when I can. After a little deliberation, the manager went online to see the price for himself. He pointed out to us that they were running a special sale and had actually run out of stock, which seemed like it must have been a blowout sale to get the rest of the model off the shelves. With this in mind, he said that he couldn't afford to lower the bike by that much. This conclusion seemed very fair to me, and $40 seemed more than worth the expense of getting expert opinions on the items I was buying. All in all, definitely a good experience. They also provide one free checkup if done within a year of purchasing, so I definitely plan to return in 11 months to have my bike serviced, assuming that I haven't accidentally forgotten my bike on the Light Rail before then. read more

10 gold stars for William, a gentleman of a 4-foot kid with more knowledge on bikes than 99.5% of the population. 3.5 stars for the shop overall. While this isn't "my" LBS (local bike shop), it's the one closest to me and thus the place I'll go if I'm in a jam or need a specific part that any shop will have. The ownership had changed over the last 10 years and Walt's no longer there. While the new staff is friendly, I wouldn't say that they're super personable. They're honest and helpful, but I think the first time I've experienced them initiating contact or asking "can I help you with anything?" was by William today. Their selection of commuter, cruiser, and low-end mountain bikes is pretty good. I wasn't impressed with their road bikes. I didn't see any Cannondales, Cervelos, etc. Additionally, parts seemed to be a little lacking. I browsed through the aisles and noticed the dearth of clipless pedals. This is also not the place to shop for bike shoes, jerseys, etc. And I was disappointed by their narrow selection of lubes. All that being said, it's a great spot to buy family and entry-level bikes. read more

I have passed by this place a half dozen times. When I finally got a job offer for a position in the city, i was so effing excited... that excitement quickly turned to fear because I knew that I was going to have to abandon my car and ride a bike. Unsure of what I wanted exactly, I knew above all else that the bike had to be cute. I am vain. And when I admitted that to the sales person, (I think her name was michelle) I was expecting eyes to be rolled, but no... she totally got me and helped me pick a btichin ride and was hilarious to boot. She was really knowledgeable (did you know that a bike can have like 20 some odd gears?!...uhmmm yeah, my last bike was a banana seat one from 1987). I friggin cleaned that store out. I got everything I needed from the bike, to a helmet, to other necessary accessories. The only thing I didn't leave with is the confidence that I will make it from the cal train station to my office in one piece. all in due time... so if you see a fearful Asian girl riding down the street, its probably me... please don't honk or swerve into my general direction. ok thanks. read more

Cruise through Walt's Cycle for your bike and bike repair needs. My brother and I brought in my bikes as both needed work: one needed a cable replaced and my newer bike needed a tire change. The lady helping us advised that both bikes had to stay over the weekend as they had a number of bikes before mine that required service. I was sad, and my heart grew heavy as I was really excited to break in my newest addition. However, once I pushed my selfishness aside, I realized that it was probably a good thing as it served as an indication that there were others who trusted their bikes here. My brother spoke briefly with the repair man who then decided to quickly change the tire on my newer bike while we waited. I was stoked! He squeezed us in and got us out of there in less than 10 minutes. This I truly appreciated. His gesture was a display of excellent customer service and commitment to his work and reputation; I now know why they are always so busy. I highly recommended this spot to all. There are bikes for the whole family and prices are fairly reasonable. They have everything you need too to custom your bike to make it your very own. read more

My bike had a broken cable and they offered to tune up my bike. It cost me 175 bucks for the tune up and all they did was replace the cables and break pads and cleaned up the chain. This place is a rip off! And it took them two days! Take your bike somewhere else. read more

I was nervous about getting a bike, it's a big purchase. I'm soooo happy I found Walt's cycle to help. I was greeted by a friendly employee who took the time to make sure I had the correct size frame and that the bike had the options I needed and wanted. I was able to test ride several bikes until I had one that felt right. We had to order my bike (it arrived within a week - YAY) and it's perfect! They took the time to show me how to do all the quick basics on my bike since I'm a rookie. I never felt rushed or pressured, it was a great experience! Overall, excellent bike shop. Astounding service, very competitive prices, Walt's Cycle has everything I want out of a bike shop. I went to Walt's today to get a back bike wheel, since my whole wheel was stolen. The service here was great. The guy helped me figure out if it was better off for me to get a new bike, or replace the wheel. In the end, I decided to just buy a new wheel, since I have a nice aluminum frame, and a new bike would be almost three times as much as the wheel alone. They helped me pick out everything from the wheel, and the gear cassette to the tube and the tire. Then they installed everything, for free! They also helped me figure out a new way to lock my bike, so I can secure both the back, and the front tires next time. I can't believe how helpful they were (and how nice). I don't know a whole lot about bikes, but I know when I'm being talked down to, or taken advantage of. I was happy that the people at Walt's treated me with respect, and helped me understand the pros and cons of each decision I made. In the end, I got everything for $40 less than the bike shop down the street quoted me for. I would definitely go back here again if I ever need anything for my bike. read more

This is the best bike shop Ive ever been to with the best customer service. I stupidly bought a bike off craigslist and came here to get a helmet, lock, basket etc. I learned that the same bike brand new was cheaper here - so next time I'll come here. I was helped by Jim who came out to my car helped me unload and load my bike (I had Jenga-ed it into the backseat of my sedan with the the front wheel in the trunk. He checked over my bike, added air to the tires, helped me get a lock, and fitted me for a helmet. Jim was pleasant, knowledgeable, hilarious and beyond helpful. My wife and I have been bike shopping for about a month now. We've been all over the South Bay trying to figure out what we want. The biggest problem we've had with a lot of shops has been inventory. Most of these other shops either didn't have the size, trim-level, or color of the bike we're looking for. This is probably where Walt's has been above the rest, at least for us. Price-wise they appear to be below-MSRP across the board (even for current-year models), which is great as well. The other great thing about Walt's is its mom & pop shop feel, and very friendly staff. I noticed a few negative reviews on the staff here in Yelp, but my experience with Ben couldn't have been better. Ben had an enormous amount of technical knowledge, coupled with being just a super nice guy and not pushy or impatient. I tend to be quite neurotic with expensive purchases like this, and I test-rode multiple sizes and models, and Ben was super helpful and pleasant through the entire experience. The performance of the bike was a hugely positive factor, but after months of searching, this is what ultimately made me decide to purchase a bike from Walt's. As for my purchase, I picked up a beautiful, freshly-built 2015 Trek 7.4 FX as a commuter. The shop staff took extra time to quality-check the bike after we decided it was the one. There is also a free tune-up on the bike, which is normally $125. It expires in one year. Overall, a friendly shop with lots of stock. A great place to start your search. This will likely be my go-to shop as I get into the sport. read more

I decided to stop into Walt's since it's so close to where I live. Walt's is definitely for the beginner/recreational rider. Most of their bikes are mountain and touring/hybrid bikes. They had probably 30-40 road bikes, but all Trek and Giant only. Their prices were decent and they were more than eager to help me out, although I could tell that the guy helping me didn't really know road bikes that well. At least he caught on that I knew road bikes, because he gave a different spiel to the guy he helped after me. There isn't much here in terms of clothing. I guess I'm used to going to REI and Performance, but this has fewer clothes than most of the small stores I remember. With so many bike stores around with greater selection (mind you, I'm in the market for road bikes), I probably won't go here again. I loved Walts, as it's close by and is where I got my current road bike (and learned a lot about bikes, I should say). The staff is really friendly, and I get stuff here whenever I can, because I want to support this business. However, I have to mark them down to two stars, because when they worked on my fiance's bike last time, they gave him a bike back that didn't have the tired CORRECTLY ATTACHED! It wasn't on a part of the frame that was not meant to hold tires, and it was just barely holding on. Since my fiance picked it up right before his commute, he hopped on and rode to work, and then later noticed that if he had hit any hard bumps his front tire would have shot out from under him and resulted in a pretty bad injury. So, while I still come here and get a lot of parts and tubes when I need them, I stay away when it comes to repairs. That's just waaaay too scary for me. read more

As I read through the other unflattering reviews here and on Google, I notice a theme. People are saying the following: Jim Burrus tries to "up-sale" services, "load off" merchandise, and is unpleasant to customers. The first time I came to Walt's Cycle I actually had a very good experience. A nice young woman was very helpful, kind and insightful. I bought several items and was happy to live close to a good bike store. The second time I came, I bought a bike helmet for $60.00, and then realized I made a mistake with this purchase. I'm disabled and on a fixed income, I made an honest mistake because I wear an extra large helmet (and they had no other prices available). After cleaning my apartment for a few hours that same day, I decided to take the helmet back. To my chagrin, I realized that I threw away my receipt, this type of disorganization is part of my illness. I remembered the guy who sold it to me and felt hopeful about returning the helmet. When I came to return my helmet, Jim Burrus (who misleadingly identified himself as the manager, he's actually the owner) pointed to a blue sign on their counter that said no returns without a receipt. Of course I never noticed this sign. I'm a reasonable person so I understand this rule, but by the same token, I bought this helmet 3 hours prior. I explained to him that I cleaned my apartment, threw away the receipt accidentally, and I have an illness that causes disorganization. There's a reason I'm on disability. The same guy who sold it to me, a friendly Latino man came out and told Jim that he remembers selling me the helmet. So it was clear that I bought the helmet at Walt's Cylce three hours prior. Jim Burrus again pointed to his policy saying that he was not going to help me. Jim is maybe 70+ years old, the age of a man who would likely own a "Mom and Pop" type business. These businesses are known for their moral and ethic style of business. They recognize their customers, greet them warmly, and make ethically right choices. This is Not the case with Jim Burrus at Walt's Cycle. He presented himself as an unhappy and money centered person. So that's my experience at Walt's Cycle. I don't know if Walt is Jim's son or father, but he wouldn't be proud. Went there recently to buy tires. On my way out, liked the look of a new bike on sale. Just touched the seat of the bike when the employee yelled "You cant be touching the bikes, understand ?".
