This place is usually very busy around lunchtime so the seating is limited. That is about the only gripe I can come up with. The burgers and all of the breakfast items are very good. They also have pies and other desserts they make in house if you have a sweet tooth. read more

I have to admit, I'm one of those guys who frequents Wampach's. Not because its the classiest joint in town with the best food, rather I was originally drawn in by the neon sign outside that reads "come as you are." That small town hospitality is echoed inside the restaurant as well. The menu reads like my mother's cooking repertoire, although a bit better (sorry Mom). Its where I go for home cooking when I don't feel like being at home or cooking. The hot beef commercial and the onion rings (an order feeds 4) are exceptional, as are quite a few other menu items. They also have a guest barbecue chef from Louisiana so if you can find out when he's cooking, the specials are exceptional! Breakfast is served all day and has been rated as one of the best breakfast joints in the Twin Cities - and rightly so. Really good food, and its generally cheap, but bring cash or your checkbook. I love the way they cook the bacon and the slices aren't flimsy like a perkins. Hashbrowns aren't crispy, not special. Very cheap eats. Always packed. Average all day breakfast diner. Tables always feel sticky, never fails. I enjoy that it is local though. I maybe go twice a year. read more

OK, this was my 2nd time there yesterday. Ever since my family moved to Chanhassen and my mother in law moved to Chaska, my wife & mother in law have loved going here when they go out during the weekends for lunch/breakfast and then shopping. She keeps wanted me to try it, so a couple weeks ago we went there. I got their Cajun Breakfast special and my wife got the beef commercial. She loved hers and when I tried it, I wasn't impressed, not much flavor and the beef was kinda chewy and fatty. My cajun breakfast was horrid. The hollandaise didn't taste anything like hollandaise sauce, and it had no spice at all. How could it be considered cajun with just a sprinkle of cayenne pepper (and not nearly enough). Since it doesn't have any meat and not much spice, I would think that adding some andouille would make a huge difference. Since Von Hansen's in in the area and has good andouille, maybe they should order some for this recipe. So, since my wife likes the place and she says I should give it another try, we went there yesterday. Service was pretty quick and they were friendly. My wife had a patty melt and I had grilled walleye. Now, I love walleye alot of different ways, but I didn't like this at all. She liked her patty melt, but I didn't try it because I was starting to not feel well. The walleye was very fishy. Normally walleye has a fresh light white fish type taste, but this was horrid. The spice was good, but the meat was really bad. The veggies were OK and the "american fries" were more like chunky southern style hash browns but didn't have much flavor. I started feeling bad, and when we were leaving and going to the car, I got sick and threw up in the parking lot 3 times. We drove home to Chanhassen (luckily we live in the southern part and it wasn't too far), I got home, ran to the apartment and got sick again. I then spent most of the rest of the day and part of the next morning with diarrhea and vomiting. I'm assuming the fish was bad! My wife thinks the place is good, and she doesn't like seafood, so she'll probably go back with her mom again, but I highly doubt I will ever go back and I won't bring my kids there either. I would have given them one star, but my wife likes it usually, so I bumped it to 2. Also, we had an order of onion rings for an appetizer since I've read good things about them. The order was HUGE, so that's a bonus. The spice was good, but the batter was alot thicker and chewier than I was expecting. I read an earlier review that mentioned the batter was alot like a tempura batter. Either they've never had good tempura, or the restaurant changed the recipe or over cooked these. Oh, and make sure you bring cash or a checkbook since they don't take credit cards. I can't believe a place in this day and age doesn't take credit/debit cards. Drop the checks and get with the times. I had to run next door to the bar and use the ATM and pay a fee from my bank and the ATM company to pay for lunch since I rarely carry cash. read more

My family ate at Wampach's just the other day. I think they can do a little better. The onion rings have hardly any flavor and I didn't like the batter. I have had such better onion rings at the super market. I had a cheeseburger which had no flavor as well. I also thought the whole diner was tacky. This is your classic greasy spoon. A buddy of mine and I have been meeting for breakfast periodically on Fridays at this place for a couple of years now and absolutely love it. You can't beat their coffee and breakfast! A little disclaimer is that I have never eaten anything here except for breakfast. I was right to not have high hopes, the food was nothing special and under seasoned. But the price was right. I lived in Shakopee when I was a kid back in the 1960's and remember going to Wampach's for dinner MANY times! Except for 'some' newer décor, the place hasn't really changed much over the years. My Mom still likes to stop by for lunch when we're in the area, and dinner, too. She orders the same thing every time...a BLT if we're there for lunch, liver and onions if it's after 5 p.m.! Ha! I have probably eaten everything on the menu...EXCEPT the liver and onions...and I can attest, it's always consistent, though the portions are HUGE, so come with either a big appetite or ask for a doggie bag. I love the memories this place brings back...me and Dad sitting at the counter, him with his bacon and eggs and me with a kid's portion of buttermilk pancakes with blueberry syrup.
