We just love this wonderful small town, good cookin' kind of diner. Very small place so be prepared to wait. But not unnecessarily long. I had the biscuits and gravy both days! Added the wonderful side of hash browns on Sunday. So yummy! I love old school cafe type places to eat. Wampach's is one of these cafes! Food is exactly what you expect and the service is wonderful. Some times you have to wait but it is worth it. I want to highlight something that happened just recently. I was seated and got my coffee, placed my order and while I was waiting the man next to me got up. He started looking for his wallet and couldn't find it. The waitress came back and he told her. Without even giving it any thought she grabbed his bill and said, "don't worry about it hon". Good old time diner. Came for breakfast- great prices, good food and lots of it. It's your basic breakfast food, nothing special but solid. This is a small place with a nice parking lot. So I have to preface this review by saying that I'm a snooty Californian with extremely discerning taste... so if you're a local yokel, feel free to dimiss my review entirely. In the time of McDonald's and ever-growing fast food chain restaurants, I'm glad that there are places like Wampach's still serving food from the good ole days. I've been here a few times already and it's the first place I go to when I visit the in-laws out here in Shakopee for the Holidays. This is first restaurant I go to train/adjust my taste buds for Minnesotan fair (as opposed to the organic frisee salad with pomegranite seeds I get in San Francisco)... The food overall is pretty bad but what you would normally expect of Minnesotan fare. You might see a "Meatloaf Commercial" on a good day...that is, a slice of meatloaf over a mound of mashed potatoes and gravy sitting on an open faced sandwich bread. It came with a side of orange jello and some canned-corn on the side. Everything was out of a can or a mix, including the mashed potatoes, but if your taste buds are used to that, I guess it can be good. The dinner roll came with pat of what I thought was butter, but was actually margarine/butter substitute. However, anything fried is pretty delicious. They have a huge mound of onion rings in batter for a pricy $5.95. The ambiance is old school Minnesota. Shakopee is a working class town with a woman's prison and one of the largest malt factories in the US. There are probably people who've been to Wampach's for years and years. They sit on the counter (right of the restaurant as you walk in) and know the waitresses by name. They're also the ones who order the bolder items on the menu (e.g., chicken livers) that I wouldn't trust to order from this place. As much as I give 2-stars, I would be remiss if I didn't say that Shakopee wouldn't be the same if Wampach's was gone some day. It looks like an old-fashioned diner...no, it IS an old fashioned diner and it embraces its "bad" food without any apologies and self-consciousness. How fun! My boyfriend and I were looking for a good ol' hearty breakfast on a Saturday morning when we Googled the Shakopee area and came across Wampach's. We decided to check it out and we weren't disappointed. I ordered a standard eggs, bacon, hashbrown/potato meal and omg, YUM. They got my overhard eggs and the bacon cooked PERFECTLY! I was really happy with my meal. My boyfriend got some type of club-esque sandwich (I don't remember the name of it) and he really liked it as well. You definitely need to be aware that you're going to a small-town cafe or Mom and Pop type of restaurant. It's nothing fancy and that's why we liked it so much! Lots of regulars and everyone seems to know everyone. You can tell some of the patrons have been going there for years. Again, this was another reason we liked it. I read some of the bad reviews before we went and honestly, yes, you're going to be disappointed if you're a self-proclaimed food snob. This is MN comfort food and it's awesome! If you're looking for anything fancy, this isn't your place. I love breakfast for all meals of the day and I will definitely be eating there again. read more

I found Wampach's to be a charming small town diner. The breakfast menu provides a nice selection with some variety. The food was great and the wait time was not bad at all considering how busy they were during our visit. Our server was very attentive and kept refilling our coffee as needed. For some reason I really enjoy the coffee here and I find myself drinking quite a few cups! The portion sizes are quite generous (I couldn't finish it all). I quite enjoyed the laid back & friendly atmosphere with my boyfriend. Overall, I found the food and service great during our visit. I would definitely return in the future! :) read more

Found this place on Yelp and it was close by so we stopped in. From the outside, it appeared to be a nice family style coffee shop/diner, and it was. We were greeted right away in a friendly manner and were seated soon thereafter. I got the special of the day, which was Swedish meatballs, which came with mashed potatoes, (canned) green beans and a square of Jello for dessert. Oh, it also came with a roll and butter. The meatballs were good, and the potatoes were good also. It was a good solid comfort food meal for a fair price and I haven't had Jello at a restaurant for years! This place is small...small dining room, small kitchen. The kind of place that was probably "the spot" back in the day, then the town grew around them. Don't expect 5-star service or food. But you can expect an honest, home cooked meal. When it gets busy, the staff can get overwhelmed, (remember the small kitchen). But the food comes out hot and made to order. Everything tastes exactly like you'd expect. Nothing exceedingly more or different and certainly not less. The chicken fried steak and American fries (thin-style hash browns) was good. Thick, creamy gravy on a nicely breaded steak. They have regular hash browns which are perfectly crisp on the outside. The American fries were actually a nice change - irregular and thinly sliced potatoes cooked hash brown style. The eggs benedict were decent but the muffin was well done and crispy. I like mine more medium to soak up the hollandaise. The ham slices are thick cut and onion rings pretty dang good. Large rings and perfectly fried. The only thing I would say is that the staff isn't exceptionally interactive. They are friendly and nice but not particularly engaging. As with previous posts, I do think the overall experience is important, which includes the level of attention you get as part of the service. It won't be the prettiest plating you will see for food in a restaurant, but it will be well prepared and like your mom made it, at very reasonable prices and portions. read more

2nd time here for breakfast. I had the Cajun breakfast special and my husband had the Eggs Benedict. This is a little hole in the wall, the food was great and service was quick. However, if I had something to say, it would be that the waitresses could be a lot friendlier. We ask for a booster chair for my 2 year old and did get one but the waitress never acknowledged the question. When we ask for creamer and a refill later, again, the waitress did not acknowledge the question but we did get what we ask for. It was like she didn't enjoy her job which would make it awkward for the guests. For me, great service and food and a welcoming, friendly atmosphere brings me back. Having never been before, we decided to try Wampach's based on the reviews being one of the best in the area for breakfast. We went mid-morning, and it was pretty busy, so we decided to get food to go. It's a pretty small restaurant, so get there before or after the rush. While waiting for our food to come out I made some observations. I noticed that most of the restaurant itself had a dirty and musty smell to it. The carpet was really old and worn, there was dust on every surface especially the register area, all the wood, and the pictures on the walls near the entrance. The food itself was okay, but it didn't taste fresh. We aren't restaurant snobs or picky eaters by any means. I don't think we would return. My suggestion would be to drive a little farther to Edina/Eden Prairie and go to Original Pancake House. read more
