Had a family meal - indoors due to the cold weather. We especially enjoyed the Vignarola carbonara - rich but not too heavy, and the zucchini was firm as it should be not mushy. This is one of those places you should definitely visit at least once a summer for their incredibly special, beautiful, immersive, rustic, nature-forward atmosphere. We visited midday, and the staff was all so friendly. They let us pick our seat outside (it wasn't busy yet) so we could be in the shade but still enjoy the heat and flowers and birds; and, they were so patient with us when we were definitely not (on multiple occasions) ready to order. When we offhandedly remarked how parched we were, our server hooked us up with BIG water glasses - and really, it's the little things like that that set a place apart. The drinks were good! I got a mocktail that tasted like a jazzed up Shirley Temple. Appreciate that they have mocktails for, as of writing this, under $10. For me, however, the food was a let down. While there's plenty of gluten-free options, the vegan options are almost non-existent. It seems like it's $20 for a plate of cold vegetables, $20 for a plate of grilled vegetables, or $20 for a pizza with red sauce and more grilled vegetables. The pizzas themselves are kind of small, I think. It says 12", but when ours arrived... it looked like the same size that I might slide out of a frozen pizza from the store. If you've got no dietary restrictions, you'll probably feel differently than me, but I wouldn't come here to eat. Actually, my recommendation is this: come an hour before they open, park your car, and go wander their genuinely lovely trail system. It's mostly flat (there are some rooty areas), and there's SO. MUCH. COOL. ART. to look at. At least one piece will make you smile and become something you talk about later... when you're sitting at the restaurant outside (the Adirondack chairs overlooking the woods is very Maine) enjoying a cocktail. read more

Really great atmosphere! The lighting is really nice. The pizza was really good and cooked perfectly. The steak tips were also very good but seem to very in size each visit. We also got the beet salad which was really tasty but as someone who loves beets I think it could have had some more. I think in the past my parents have gotten more beets. The desserts were all good but aren't a must try, although the blackberry tiramisu special was very good and quite large. All the wait staff is super friendly! Maddy was great! I'll start with the positive...it's a beautiful space and setting. The food was also delicious if a little bland and a bit on the small side especially for the price. I recommend the pizza! The room, though lovely, was incredibly loud and echoing all the small children who were bellowing right behind us. I expect this level of noise at a family restaurant at a lower price point but not when a bill for two is $90. The customer service was also lacking. We asked our waitress to speak up a number of times and she looked unhappy to do so. She tried to take away a half-eaten salad without even asking us (we weren't done) and then put clean plates on top of the pizza crust and my fork. And then when she handed us a dessert menu it took her fifteen minutes of talking to people who she knew to get back to us. In that time we gave up and asked the hostess for our bill. Perhaps this was her first waitressing gig? I hope she will get better but at this price it was a frustrating experience. I do love the location and may be back in some months once these kinks are worked out! read more

Update Stick with me, here... I coached youth soccer (I said, stick with me!) As a 'thank you' gift, the players' parents were kind enough to give me a Wander gift card for a crazy amount. They purchased it less than a month before Wander closed in 2024 for the fall/winter. OK, no problem - we'd wait until spring. After they'd been closed a while and had been posting about wedding events and things like that, we messaged to see A) when they'd reopen for dinner, and B) if they'd be honoring gift cards purchased in the previous fall. Replies were fuzzy, but said that they'd be reopening soon. Nothing on the gift card front. Hmm. Finally, the day had come when Wander reopened, and there was much rejoicing. For a minute. Then they dropped their menu on Instagram, and it...was uninspiring. A fellow follower called it a Temu Wander menu, and I think about that a lot, as it seemed apt. Oh well. Still going to go back, check it out and spend this big ol' gift card. They didn't answer inquiries on Instagram about honoring the GC's, so I called. They checked, and very unfortunately, they would not honor gift cards from the before times. This, combined with the meh-nu has meant that we haven't been back. It makes me sad, because - well, read the original review. We'd had some original, delicious, wonderful food there. But. Too bad. To be clear, they don't HAVE to honor the gift cards if it's new ownership or whatever - it is the lack of clear communication on that front was what did it for me. To say nothing about it at the time of purchase, so close to closing; to say nothing about it all winter long when specifically asked, and then again when asked on IG at opening...? If you're thinking about it... just make a reservation and go -- you won't regret it. Wander at LongWoods is a magical place that embodies the spirit of Maine. We visited during the winter and had the most wonderful dining experience, so much so that we are already planning our next visit for the summer. I can't wait to sit outside and enjoy everything this place has to offer. Located inside LongWoods preserve, with miles of trails and even a farm, Wander is all about sustainability, local ingredients, and an authentic farm-to-table experience. From the moment we drove into the preserve, the beautiful exterior of the restaurant took us aback. You can tell that much thought and energy went into this project. It was love at first sight as soon as we walked inside for dinner. The dimly lit ambiance, the decor, the vintage photos hung around, the bar... it was all perfect! It was barn meets fine dining without it being too pretentious. Sharing plates is the way to go at Wander! We started with the Tagliatelle (lamb, fennel, leek, parmesan), and I am still thinking about it. It was the perfect pasta, one of the best I've ever had. We tried their wood-fired pizzas as well -- which was risky because my partner doesn't even like thin-style pizza too much -- but he loved theirs. We had the Terrace (red base, organic tomatoes, mozzarella, sweet Italian sausage, hot cherry peppers, shallots) and the Grandma (white base, mozzarella, parmesan, pecorino, San Marzano tomatoes, basil, parsley) and both were incredible. The grandma was herby, with lots of parsley and a lemony taste, while the terrace was spicy, so avoid it if you don't like it hot! We accompanied our dinner with a bottle of Bordeaux, which was just delicious. It was the perfect pairing for our pasta and pizza. My one constructive suggestion for Wander is to expand their wine list in terms of prices! The cheapest bottle on the menu was around $45-50. That felt a bit odd, given that the pizza and the rest of the menu are priced reasonably. Moving onto desserts... I think this was the highlight of the night. The banana bread pudding was to die for! I've never tried such good banana bread pudding. The vanilla cheesecake was also quite yummy. It was hard to pick a favorite, but I'll have to go with the banana bread. So we visited Wanders at Long Woods for a second time on 11/15/25 and our experience was far from our first visit which was wonderful as the first visit the food was amazingly prepared and cooked while this visit with the same couple we went with on our first visit was not nearly as good. My wife and I had Pork Loin with potato crochet and string beans and quite honestly it the the worst we had ever tasted as it was so over cooked it was very tough to eat cause it was so dry and the potatoes were over cooked as well that the basically fell apart we you put a fork to them to cut in half, just a terribly prepared meal, our friends had the Haddock and and the Burger and much like ours it was way over cooked and super dry and not very tasty, we all left most of the meal on the plate, the apple crisp desert was very good. The service we thought was not very good this time either as our waitress was not very attentive to us in checking in, we were never given salt, pepper or ketchup as we ask several times and finally we had to stop her and basically say can we please have the salt, pepper and ketchup. We probably won't go back to Wanders at Long Woods as it's not worth the drive from Scarborough and there are so many amazing restaurants in portland to choose from. read more

Our group started off with seasonal cocktails. I was excited to see Goldie's Gin - which just came out! - on their menu. We shared the cheeseboard which came with a savory pastry that our friends are STILL talking about to this day. So if you're picking up what I'm putting down, GET THE CHEESEBOARD and confirm the savory pastry is on it. We all got different menu items: the beef brisket, cavatelli, risotto and the seared tuna (seasonal). The tuna was exceptional. My partner was disappointed by the 'size' of the beef brisket (everyone else plates were, well, HUGE) but, size aside, the brisket was perfect. I recommend getting vegetables to share with the group. We polished off the meal with the seasonal creme brulee and the olive oil cakes. We were so pleasantly stuffed from our meals that we could barely finish! read more

Reservations for 6:30 and they were out of the pork which was the only non-seafood protein item on the menu. There was a pizza oven on the patio but they would not let guests dining indoors order the pizza. The concept is great but the execution is poor. The website encourages guests to wander the area but none of the staff could suggest the path to follow or where to wander. The food was over priced and tasted so-so at best. read more

Loved everything about my evening at Wander! Before dinner we walked through the little trail system behind the restaurant. It was pretty magical stumbling upon various types of sculptures and artwork throughout the grounds. Dinner itself was a magical affair as well. I got the braised duck pasta and crème brulée which were both amazing. I tried bites of the fish cakes and chicken milanese that others in my party ordered and both were delicious as well. First..the food was very good. Enjoyed the beets, mussels and focaccia. Drinks were good but slow to arrive. My wife's pasta had a piece of steel wool in it, like what they use to clean a pan. Accidents happen and they did comp that and a dessert. Risotto was good but could've been warmer. What was odd is that although we ordered at the same time the timing of service was off. That was a disappointment and hopefully just an off night. What didn't work for me was the server. She was impatient and lacked attentiveness one would expect. For example we ordered a farmer's board that never came out. When asked she said we did order it but seemed fairly nonplussed about it not being served. Her attention to our group was a bare minimum. Still can't quite believe that we hadn't heard of this great place - and it is so nearby! We started with martinis and a blueberry old fashioned - all went well with the cheese board and focaccia. From there we opted for four different entrees - so we could taste it all; and a sparkling rose' - because a rose' goes with almost anything! The risotto w/swiss chard was absolutely perfect - warm, creamy. The chicken w/dumplings was comfort food on steroids, and the tuna was perfectly done and flavorful. The halibut was prepared so well; sometimes it can be dry but this prep was great! Our server was Kim, she started by saying she was new but she did a great job. Dean, the bartender, was also superb. We joined him after dinner for a night cap - and bonus for me was that they have a French Sauvignon Blanc - my companions had espresso martinis. Wow what a great farm to table find! We called for reservations on a Sunday and was told they were booked but they had places for walk ins at the kitchen. We arrived at five and were promptly seated. We shared the Shishito peppers for an appetizer. They were served with a crème sauce which was a first for me. A perfect blend of fire and a taming crème. I had the Halibut which was served on a bed of local cooked greens and grilled onions. Awesome blend of flavors. My friend said the chicken was like butter as it melted in his mouth. Drinks took forever and came out separately over a 30 min period, appetizers were slow but delicious (mushrooms dish and beet salad. Excellent flavor, great dressing). The pizzas (which we had to explain twice were for dinner after being told they would come out w apps) took over an hour, and we never got the Cesar salad that was ordered and then we were asked if we wanted it with the pizza. Pizza was fine, nothing notable. Overall confusing evening, not sure it's worth a third try, maybe in summer when we can sit outside and the food matters less? We usually have to go quite a ways out of Portland to find pastoral perfect dining, but Wander is 15 minutes from Woodfords Corner! Years in the making this small farm centered restaurant is where you need to go when you're a bit fatigued with urban joints (though we love Portland's). They even have a couple miles of wooded trails to explore. They are very welcoming and reservations (indoors dining) are recommended. The gorgeous outdoor patio is walk-in and a more limited menu focused on pizza. Mushroom confit, carrot ginger soup, mussels, and deviled eggs were highlights. Pickles and charcuterie board were ok but light on substance and variety (some prosciutto and one type of softish cheese). Berry sorbet was superb. Cocktails were creative, if a little weak. The beer list is well curated. Overall, this is a wonderful respite from the usual dining experience so close to the city. This will be an autumn destination! read more

I am over the moon about this place. We went with friends for a very special indoor dinner and every single dish and drink hit perfectly. Delicious, exciting flavor, and the best risotto I've ever had. We had almost everything off the menu, including dessert. I came back with my kids and did the outdoor pizza/salad and it was fantastic -- probably the best pizza I've had in Maine. One of the owners, Jordan, came and told us all about the mission and intention behind Longwoods and it's very impressive. Constructively, they could really work on the ambiance of the indoor space. It was too bright and way too loud, and really didn't match the food (or the prices). With a little attention to indoor ambience, Wander could basically be the perfect restaurant. No more wandering where to go for dinner (or lunch)! Had dinner at Wander the other day--the place is tops: delicious food served gracefully. There's wood fired artisan pizza being made outside in the outdoor area and it's just as great as the food served inside. I'm going to take a ride out there and have a cold beer, a warm pizza, and a trail hike after to see some of the statues or sculptures in along the pathways in the woods. That's all I have. It is 100% a great addition to the short list of places to go for lunch and dinners. read more

This is a very difficult review to write, because I really wanted to love this place and driving up the long driveway to the restaurant was a terrific potential preamble to what I hope would be a wonderful meal. Unfortunately, the high tension wires that mar your view also served as a preview to a very disappointing experience. Upon arrival, we were seated properly, in a corner adjacent to other diners. The spacing is fine, but not generous, and the noise levels are modest, allowing for good conversation. Our waitress was attentive, but over sold the entrées Portlandia-style, and in a way that was both confusing and a little offputting. Still, we placed the recommended three course order, expecting a epic meal, considering the price points of each of the items was similar to other restaurants in the area, including Fore Street, Hugo's (of blessed memory), etc. The focaccia was nice, though oversaturated with olive oil, the meat and cheese plate was substantive, but one of the meat placed appeared to be a pepperoni, which was both incongruous and a little sloppy. But after those first two courses, we sat. And waited. And waited. And waited. It was nearly 90 minutes until our main entrée arrived. Mind you, this is a roast fish, chicken confit (for $36 way over dry and not even a true confit), and an over seasoned smash burger with soggy fries. Now look, I really want to like this place. It looks like they're trying really hard. But it's clear that they are overwhelmed and understaffed, and the chef is no where near at a level to command entrée prices north of $30. And considering what we ordered, and that we arrived for a 4:45 PM reservation, waiting for 90 minutes between courses (during which the service was distracted and a little lazy - we had to request water refills and silverware replacements), this place isn't worth dropping $400 for a party of 4. So, even though we're local, and as much as I hate to say it, I won't be back. Seems that the high tension wires were a dead giveaway after all. read more

If it is possible to leave 0 stars that would be too much. The staff and the manager are the most unprofessional. This was our 5th time at the restaurant . It has always been exceptional. Tonite we were seated at 715. Waitress promptly took our orders and then came back and told us that items were sold out. I said we were disappointed but ordered and three of us chose other items. The waitress then surprised me saying that they were able to put one more of the specials together. I was pleased and thanked her. Then we never heard from the waitress. This was 735. At 8:50pm I asked to see a manager. She came over and told us that there was a problem with how the waitress was treated and she needed to take some time. No one ever came over (manager) to understand what happened or to simply take over for the server or to find out what happened. Then the food was served and my order was served cold. I asked the manager to take it back and she brought it back hot. Then I asked her why the server did not return and she proceeded to tell me that she was crying because of our interaction. And then accused me of disrespecting the server. At this point I told her to take my meal back and credit my portion of the dinner. I told her I was very disappointed and would not be coming back. She told me she was glad. Then we waited for the check and no one brought it over. One of our party went up to get the check since the manager did not bring it over. Then we went up to pay and again I asked the manager what happened. Then all of the other wait staff started accusing me and my party of being disrespectful to the waitress. Since they were not part of the discussion I am not sure why the manager did not simply diffuse the situation. Instead she continued to insist that I was basically being a KAREN. Our party of 6 all shared that this simply wasn't the case but she simply smirked. Amazingly unprofessional. Stay away from Wander. It is not worth a visit. If you happen to be the owner, I strongly suggest you rethink who you have managing and staffing your restaurant. An evening ruined and in this very difficult market not sure that you just willingly be dismissive of local customers who bring their guests. STAY AWAY. read more

The entertainment outside was a nice addition! The food was absolutely outstanding! We had the kohlrabi, the frisée salad, and the grilled mushroom polenta. Important to know is that the menus inside and outside are different, with the outside options being just pizza. (There is also no gluten-free pizza.) The staff does need to remember to explain this because the rule is strict, and we ended up in an awkward situation in which a family member with mobility issues had made it outside, only to find that there was a different menu than anticipated and we had to actually move inside. Wander opened just three months ago, and they seem to have worked out any kinks a new restaurant inevitably encounters. We sat inside on a cold evening, and the rustic converted barn provided a cozy, yet airy atmosphere. The food was outstanding. The muscles were served in a velvety, flavorful lemon/wine/butter sauce.The seared halibut was perfectly cooked with a slightly acidic sauce that added a wonderful dimension to the dish. I really want to be honest and constructive here......we dined at Wander this evening and give it a 2 star (at best) review. The food was truly excellent (what there was of it).......however, the portions were incredibly small, and very over priced! Paid a lot ($350 for 4 people) and we all left unsatisfied and still hungry. Not good! Two of us ordered the "Seafood Stew" for $38......it consisted of (3) 1 oz pieces of halibut, 4 small clams, 5 Bang Island mussels and a piece of bread. This was sooooooo dissappointing!!!!!
