This has got to be the worst hotel I have ever stayed in!! I'm not sure how this place stays in business. Out in Durango on a fire contract, and this was the only place available with 3 rooms for the crew and I. There were hairs in the bed, and I didn't even shower in the morning because the room was disgusting, I honestly considered sleeping in the car. The pilot in my crew had a more recently updated room, but there were literal "evidence" stickers on the outside of his window like it had been part of a crime scene. You would think the owner of the cleaners would have removed them considering it probably bad for business. Anyways please don't waste your money staying in this cesspool!! read more

Sounded promising from the ad on Expedia! We got there and the first thing you notice is the smell, not a good smell! Then you look around the room and notice unrecognizable stains on the walls, ceiling and baseboards. TV remote didn't run the TV, only the box so manual on/off and volume. The bed sheets were clean and ok comfy, one crinkled when moved on and didn't have bed bugs. I was afraid to touch anything but I had prepaid, we were determined to get our moneys worth. Durango is very expensive! I think some people live at this lodge aside from the owners. I would stay away and spend the extra money to get what you know, Holiday Inn, etc. read more

Very clean, comfortable, well equipped and most of all cheap. Only reason I don't give 5 stars is because of the noise, since it is a bit close to the road some noise gets in while you're sleeping. Overall perfect place for a one-night stay or single travelers. read more

My wife and I stayed here twice so far. The first time with my sister, brother in law, and niece in room 14 (the largest room that fit all five of us and three dogs) and the second time in room 12 with our 18 year old son. The owners, Garth S. and his wife, are super nice and now have a newborn daughter. They allow pets and we brought our "fake dog", the Pomeranian, both times. The second visit, January 2020, we came to Durango for my wife's birthday. They kindly allowed us to check in early since we had to be in Purgatory at 3 PM for an Alpenglow snowshoe tour. The heater worked great and the room was clean. On Sunday, I explained to Garth that we were going to buy some grass fed beef at the nearby James Ranch Market. I asked him if we could store this beef in the freezer of room 14 since it would thaw by the time we left on Monday. He said we could store it in his personal freezer, behind the check in desk. On Monday morning, Garth knocked on my door and told me he and his wife were leaving into town. He gave me the frozen beef and I thanked him for his hospitality. This family run lodge treats you like a valued customer and we will be staying here again. Thank you Garth S. and family. read more

Don't be fooled by this place. The website shows this motel from decades ago and makes it sound like the Wapita is still traditional & quaint. Instead, it's a sketchy unsafe dump. I'm a tough old guy, so I thought I could hang, despite the sketchy gangsters, coming & going from the rooms rented by the week\month to these almost homeless peoples. It is unsafe there. Your car is unsafe outside your room. It is noisy and busy from the sketchy traffic, coming & going. I met with the manager\owner, withdrew from my room after one-hour and requested a refund. He reluctantly agreed to refund my credit card, but did not. I had to dispute the charge. Don't be fooled by their deceptive website. read more

The Wapiti Lodge in Durango is a Gem - nestled right near behemoth chain hotels like Residence Inn and The Doubletree Hotel, this i little hotel (established 1966) is extremely clean and reasonably priced. The only reason I don't rate it 5 stars is that it lacks some of the modern things I have come to expect of hotels - internet, swimming pool, decorating updates and little soaps by the sink for instance. We enjoyed our stay (family of 4 with a standard poodle mix dog) and felt safe and comfortable at the Wapiti Lodge! read more

Watch these people! We reserved 5 rooms for a wedding. They were to collect credit cards from guests to pay for the room when they arrived or reserved the room in their name by phone. They did not follow through on this so I was charged for all 5 rooms!!!! When I explained the situation they were not willing to help in any way. I won't be giving them any business in the future. There are many great small privately owned hotels in Durango. Head north on Highway 550 for many good choices and skip this place. read more

TOTAL RIP OFFS!!! Have not returned a $100 CASH deposit from August. Multiple lies about sending it out from Josh. I have sent multiple emails and letters, all ignored. Paid cash for the room, they required an additional $100 cash deposit, no problem, paid it. Office was closed next morning (6am-9am) at check out time??? I attached a note to the room key and ask them to return the deposit by mail. 2 months and still no return of my cash deposit or a reason why they want to rip me off, they must need my money more than I do. I am a retired disabled senior. Beware of BUGS, BUGS, BUGS everywhere, when I walked in, the 1st bed was full of ants, if you read other reviews, many complaints about bugs and ants. Nothing in the room, except 2 beds, no towels, no tissues. STEER CLEAR OF THIS "FAMILY OWNED" MOTEL, POS!!! I have stayed here many times over the years, THIS WAS THE LAST TIME. I left the room cleaner than when I arrived, never used either bed, too gross with all the bugs, slept on the floor, seriously, a disabled senior had to sleep on the floor. Not what I expected. Family run, friendly, good reviews were what i based my decision on. Everything was clean on my arrival. Fair sized room, comfy bed. The room was dark ( overhead lighing not working) Furnishing old mismatched stuff. Housekeeping consisted of making bed & maybe emptying trash. No fresh towels, soap, coffee pot not cleaned. Floor sticky all 5 days. Had to request toilet paper & coffee. Dead ants all over the sink. Definitly NOT WORTH what I paid! read more

When staying in Durango, you could choose a hotel right off of Main Ave and pay $200+, or you could take a short walk from downtown and pay $97 for a completely adequate room at Wapiti Lodge. Wapiti is your average no-frills family-owned motel. You get a clean spotless room, comfortable beds, towels, soap, TV, and everything else you would expect from a standard motel. Wi-fi is free and works great even at the end of the building. Sure it lacks a pool and isn't the most modern place like the Best Western across the street, but it gets the job done at a reasonable rate. A couple of guys road tripping through Colorado don't really need much more. If you paid online, make sure to remember that and show your receipt. The lady at the check-in counter skipped that little detail and wanted to charge us again. After mentioning it to her, it was not a problem. Mistakes happen. Absolutely blown away by Wapiti Lodge! Could not have asked for anything more, Hunters cabin was incredible, beautifully furnished, clean, and definitely worth the money. The Kyle's were the friendliest and most accomodating owners we have met yet. The location is also great it is a bit outside of Yellowstone but the experience makes it worth it. The care that they put into their establishment is obvious, from the breakfast baskets in each room to the bar, and convenience store we couldn't be happier. This is a very quaint lodge with very friendly staff. The room is very lackluster though. The door is hard to open and close, the beds are on wheels and move around. Despite that, they still didn't clean out from underneath the beds! The hottub is very intimate but we couldn't get it to go above 96 degrees F. There is barely any pressure in the shower, but it's enough to get the job done. The views are beautiful and they provide outdoor seating in the porch and on the lawn so you can enjoy the views. Don't expect peace and quiet though. The lodge is next to the highway that was busy late into the night. The place is pet friendly. read more

Had a reservation for months. Had a friend warn me not to stay here Confirmed the reservations several times, including the morning of my stay when I told them I would be there but it would be in the evening. I was told I had until 10pm to arrive. After driving 8 hours to arrive at 9:45 in Durango, I found out the gave my room away at 9:30 and then tried to charge me for the room the gave away put from under me. I was left with kids in my car at 10 pm with no where to stay, forcing me on the street with my children and having to drive thru mountain roads in pitch dark putting us in danger. read more

We stayed at the Wapiti Lodge for one night. The rooms are clean, nothing special but it's all we needed for just one night. The owner, Garth, has a great sense of humor and was very nice. It's a quick walk to downtown Durango. There are several big chains hotels right near by, but I would rather give my business to a young married couple who run a great lodge. read more

I was a bit disappointed. The room had many bugs in it and it was very difficult to sit on the porch at night without being invaded with bugs. The room was clean and the services was good, but the room should have been equipped better with shampoo and conditioner. I would stay again on a small budget but I did expect a little better. Avoid room 16. Next to room 16 is a store room and the office. Above these is an apartment/workshop/animal training room....not exactly sure. After riding 9 hours on the motorcycle I was exhausted and turned in at 9:00. The stomping above went back and forth until 11:00. I walked out to see what was going on and the lights went out. Booked a room online and thankfully we called to see if we could check in early. Just find out they overbooked and we no longer had a room. Not very helpful staff, unwilling to help us find something else or find a solution to them messing up. My fiancé and I drove to durango for her cousins wedding and 5 hours before the wedding we had no room... I would not recommend this place to anyone, for the price they were charging you can go down the street to a newer nicer hotel instead of a shady, run down hotel where they don't like to help guests out when they drop the ball. After a 12 hour day of driving, I booked a room through hotels.com. There was no one there when I arrived. A man who identified himself as the maintenance man, showed up, seemed very confused and put out that I was there. I explained that I had a confirmed room. He would not honor the rate I had confirmed, even after showing him my hotel.com confirmation and rate. After calling the owner, he continued to tell me the incorrect rate. I left the property. The owner then called and told me he would honor the rate. By that time, I had already booked another room, at the Best Western, at a reduced rate. The owner assured me I would not be charged. I hope he is correct. I have stayed at this property at least a dozen nights and have never had anything but stellar service. This is very disappointing, and I hope they train their front desk staff better. It was not so much the confusion as it was their attitude. It is a shame because they were always my go-to lodging choice.***Just heard back from the owner. Told me he has to watch out for scammers and that he "doesn't appreciate bad behavior". Not only did he not apologize for the rudeness of his staff, Mike, but he doubled down and put the entirety of the situation back on me. I strongly recommend avoiding this motel. read more
