I came here for dinner one day with a friend and had a pleasant time. While the inside of the restaurant is spacious, and beautifully decorated, their parking space is really small and there are limited spots. You'll likely have to find street parking as we did. Service here was attentive and kind. My friend and I wanted to try a variety of dishes, so we ordered the Crispy Potatoes, Silken Ota Tofu, Chicken and Oregon Black Truffle Wontons, Hand-pulled Cabbage, and Ribeye Bulgogi. While this spot was good, I would definitely say that it is more Asian fusion than Chinese. I thought that the crispy potatoes and silken ota tofu were good but there was nothing super special about them. I was really excited about the chicken and Oregon black truffle wontons but was a bit underwhelmed by the lack of truffle flavor in the wontons we got. The bulgogi was pretty good, and I would say that the cabbage was my favorite dish with how prominent the flavors of Sichuan peppercorn and lap cheong were. Sign me up for Warsugai for breakfast, lunch, and dinner because those potatoes live rent free in my head. We dropped by Warsugai on a weekend as soon as they opened for dinner -- a bit odd in terms of timing but we'd been dying to try it and didn't realize they weren't open for lunch. We were seated right away since we were the only ones in, but service was super friendly and attentive. First off, the interior is so cute! It's unassuming from the outside but the interior feels so fun and quirky yet warm. 10/10 aesthetics. Now let's get down to the food; as always, husband the omnivore got the almond fried chicken and we shared a mix of other things including the crispy potatoes, silken ota tofu, french onion korokke, taishan cauliflower, and the summer chard. I was tempted to try the bokkeum bap aka the vegetarian main but I felt like there was more than enough for me to try from our shared dishes that I opted not to get it. The potatoes totally took us by surprise with how thin, crispy and yummy they were. If you go, you must get the potatoes, trust me. The silken ota tofu was good; nice and mild but could have used a touch more of the sauce. The korokke was surprisingly underwhelming so idk if I'd really get it again but not bad by any means. Just a bit on the blander side in regards to flavor. The veggies were all so so so good and my husband couldn't resist grabbing a cauliflower between all of his bites of almond fried chicken -- which per his review was good af. Warsugai is a really interesting concept. It's elevated Asian-American food that's got some unique dishes. Upfront, parking sucks in the area, but eventually there will be a spot. Interior- Spacious, somewhat upscale interior. Food- high quality, priced fair for the quality, decent variety. Almond Chicken - I guess it's an American Chinese dish I've never heard of before. Chicken is slightly breaded, fried and topped with an almond gravy. It's not super heavy on flavor but, it's still still a solid choice. Kamprong Shrimp - some of the best fried, sticky shrimp I've ever had. It's hard to describe but for me these are some of the most tasty and addictive shrimp you can get. Appetizers - decent. I made reservations because there was a big button for it on their website. When I got there I realized that I didn't need to, but better safe than sorry. They had outdoor seating. And while the weather was nice, I opted for indoor seating. Upon walking in you see their bar area and decor. I love the high ceilings and open feeling of the place. I got seated and presented with water as I looked through the menu. Our waitress was a wealth of information and even told us how the chef comes up with the dishes. I love the stories behind them. We tried the sake but ended up ordering cocktails. I tried the Chungking Express. For food, we ordered the rangoons, almond fried chicken, ribeye bulgogi and the cabbage. The food here is delicious! I'm glad I went with friends so we could try several items. The menu is not extensive, but everything on it sounds wonderful! Located in the prior Taqueria Nueve space, they kept the same layout. Yay! The bar has comfy seats and is a perfect place to sit if you come alone or with a friend. Along both walls are table and there is even a small, cozy area by the fireplace with a comfy couch and chairs. Now to the food! The crab rangoons are a must! Typically I avoid them as I don't care for imitation crab. No worries, Warsugai makes theirs with fresh Dungeness crab and they are fabulous! They are rolled into spring rolls, cut diagonally, and served with sauce. We devoured them. The pork pot stickers are another must have item. Made with their own handmade dough, they are larger than most, and have a delicious pork, scallion and ginger filling. One dining alone could make a meal out of these. For mains, we shared the Katsu chicken, beef short ribs and the cabbage dish along with three sides of rice. It was more than enough for three very hungry people! The chicken cutlet was perfectly cooked, the outer breading so crisp and flavorful, the meat juicy. They elevated the dish with sliced almonds in the top. I will go back anytime I'm craving a satisfying chicken dish. The boneless beef short ribs were sliced thin and stir fried with lots of black peppe, basil and bean sprouts. It is served in cast iron and arrives sizzling hot. Another winner! We were going to order the crispy shrimp with honey, which sounded delicious, but figured we should include veggies in our spread. We opted for the cabbage sautéed with lots of sliced chili pepper and peppercorns and it was a great accompaniment to our protein choices. Service was friendly and anytime the waitress didn't know the answer to our questions, which were in regards to their signature cocktails, she asked the bartender. Our group tried the Lychee Martini, a local craft beer, a standard Cosmo (me!) and then all enjoyed a glass of Columbia Valley Cab. This is a new restaurant from Chef Kyo Koo of the previous Danwei Canting. He hits it out of the ballpark again! He came over several times to see if we were enjoying our meal. Yes! We loved it! I would recommend going now before people discover it! They are open Wednesday-Sunday and you can walk right in and get a table. Saturday night is the most crowded, but I love the ambiance with more people. Parking is on street - either Ne Sandy right out front - or the side streets. You may have to drive around or park a few blocks away. We were there recently on a Thursday night and parked right out front which is convenient and avoids parking near some of the tents in the area. They do have a teeny, tiny parking lot but it only has one regular space and one handicapped spot. My only advice - and it's minimal - is reprint the menus on white paper. The menu is go,d writing in black paper, with touches of red, and while the co,ours are great for the vibe, it's really hard to read. Everyone, not just this old gal, was using their flashlight app to read it. Same with the menu on their website - you have to enlarge it to see the descriptions because it's the same colors. Such an amazing dinner and cocktails! We got the namesake (phenomenal cocktail) and a version of the Chungking express. For dinner we got the shoestring potatoes (wow, so good), the cauliflower (amazing flavor) and the pulled cabbage (so good). Our main entree was the Warsugi almond chicken. Can't think of a more hyped spot than this one right now. The inside is modern and open with a big bar stocked full of unique liqours/liquers. Too bad we went in for lunch, eventhough I'm sure it's 5PM somewhere. We started off with some Crab Langoons and Chicken Truffle Wontons. The Crab Langoons were AMAZING. Real crab through and through the spring roll. There were only two but we're more than happy with what we got. Wouldn't complain if we got more though. Freshly fried, light, and crispy. Consider us appetized. The Wontons, on the other hand, didn't slap as hard. The truffle flavor could be stronger and the vinegar sauce was a bit too overpowering for me. Great portion and the filling was very juicy though. You can tell that they make them fresh. During lunch, they serve their entreés as a complete dish with rice and side of sauteed cabbage. rather than shareable plates for the table. We got the Warsugai which was a tender fried chicken with almond. Very unique but sadly bland. Some citrus and salt would have helped this dish a bit. In contrast, the Kampong Shrimp was fire. Literally haven't had shrimps this good and fresh in a loooong time. The shrimps were so meat. The batter crunchy, sopping up all the wonderful sauce which I proceed to put on everything. 10/10 you should get this. Eventhough some of dishes were a miss, we still had a really good dining experience. Love the unique twists to classic Chinese dishes, making for a fun meal. Portion was also great. My first time walking up to the doors to the restaurant my eyes went straight to the bar and this beautiful colorful bar that has the best vibe with a neons on the wall with a up right grass installation. I was a little disappointed because of all the rave reviews. We tried a decent amount of dishes and none of them really tasted like much. The service was slow but friendly. --Wontons: fine, but unremarkable. Needed something --crispy tofu: probably one of the better things we tried all night --yu choy: greasy, bland, flavorless --cauliflower: slightly undercooked, a little greasy, slightly more flavor than the yu choy --Mapo tofu: literally tasted like nothing?? Mapo tofu is supposed to be very flavorful and spicy. This version was incredibly bland and had neither spice nor flavor. It was basically plain, unseasoned chunks of tofu in a thick brown broth that looked tasty but basically just tasted like low sodium veggie stock. There was just a bartender and one server working.....They were kind but unbelievably slow, like so slow that we ended up having to get up and grab our own boxes/ask for water, silverware etc. The food we ordered looked pretty but tasted like almost nothing. Came in for a lunch date on a Saturday and the place was not busy, so we got seated at a table right away. The setting was unique and had a retro vibe to it. Our server started us off with some samples of their Sake and our favorite out of them all was the Yuzu, which has a citrusy flavor combination of lemon and tangerine. For appetizers we had a hard time deciding, but we went with the Dungeness Crab Long Rangoons, that came in the form of an egg roll, but the only difference is the real crab versus the traditional imitation Krab. Loved this so much! For the mains, we got the Warsugai Almond Fried Chicken and the Ribeye Bulgogi, with a side of Hand Pulled Cabbage. You will definitely need rice to go along with the dishes because it was all kind of salty, especially the cabbage. My favorite was definitely the Almond Fried Chicken, I enjoyed the texture combination of the crispy chicken and crunchy almonds that was smothered in a light savory sauce. What we ordered was perfect for just the two of us, but if you plan on coming with a group, just be aware that the dishes are not served in large portions like you would typically expect at a traditional Asian American restaurant. We wanted to ventured to the Eastside for some Asian fusion food and found this interesting place. The vide was a mix of traditional Asian restaurant setting but a openness to it. The menu selection was great but when the food arrived we were taken back but the taste and portion size. Wontons were dialed. The bulgogi, crab noodles and Korean fried rice were fantastic. I was also really excited to try this place based on all the rave reviews and the menu. Unfortunately my partner and I were left dumbfounded as to how these 5 star reviews came to be. First off, we were super cold during the whole dinner, a lot of diners in the restaurant were wearing their puffy jackets such as myself. We had a rezy for 7 and we had to wait for a table (nbd) but we also had to wait more than while for both drinks and food to arrive. We finally had our meal around 8:30 and were ready to bounce ASAP due to the cold and the super slow service. Regarding the food, I chose this spot because I was really craving Chinese food. If you're looking for good or decent Chinese, I wouldn't recommend this spot. I love both traditional and American Chinese food, and I didn't find the food here to be a decent variation of either types. Personally, I found the almond chicken to be super bland and with a thick, clear sauce that did not taste remotely familiar or appetizing. We also ordered the mapo tofu and yu choy--both were uninteresting, not something I'd recommend or order again. I had great hopes for another Chinese spot in Portland (we def need more!) but this really wasn't what I had in mind. Next time we'll probably stick with Hengrys or Kanji. read more

I really do not understand the 5 star reviews.... We went to this restaurant after seeing an Instagram ad. The vibe inside was a bit confusing and kind of bland. We got there before the rest of our party and ordered two cocktails off the menu, and despite the restaurant being relatively quiet, it still tool 15 minutes for the cocktails to arrive. Once the rest of our party arrived we ordered the Pupu dinner and the server said it would be 8 dishes. For $65 each. Truffle wontons and the crab long rangoons were probably the best thing we had in the appetizers. The "crispy" tofu had good flavor but the tofu was soggy. Crispy potatoes were thin potato sticks with some seasoning. It wasn't bad but texture and flavor felt like a plate of crushed potato chips. Their signature Warsugai almond chicken was SO bland. Even though it came in gravy there was no flavor in any of the dish. The Kampong shrimp had good flavor but the shrimp tasted frozen. We had to ask multiple times for clean plates, service was not organized, second round of cocktails took same amount of time to arrive. Based on how unorganized everything felt we were surprised this restaurant had been open since January...we thought it was opening week. Overall we paid $100 each for the Pupu dinner and 2 drinks. Eager to celebrate the Chinese New Year, my friend and I were craving Chinese food and decided to give Warsugai a try. I'm glad we did! The restaurant is lovely with mint tiles surrounding the bar, a waving kitty on the wall, and plants around the perimeter. The door was opened for us as we entered, and we were seated quickly. Since we wanted to be adventurous and try multiple items on the menu, my friend and I decided to order the Pu Pu Platter. Not really a platter though, our food came out individually and took up the majority of our table. Ours came with the Silken Ota Tofu, Noble House Pork Potstickers, Dungeness Crab Long Rangoon, BBQ Pork Coppa, Sizzling Black Pepper Beef Short Ribs, Taishan Cauliflower, and Warsugai. Everything was flavorful and delicious, so it was hard to pick favorite items. Although I'm not usually a fan of tofu, I enjoyed the differing textures of the soft tofu and crispy potato and scallions. The crab rangoon was amazing! No imitation crab here...Fresh crab rolled up in a spring roll fashion and served with a chili sauce. Yum! We also enjoyed the bbq pork coppa which came with a dollop of mustard which complimented the pork nicely. Finally, the Warsugai itself was delicious. Lightly fried chicken which was not overly heavy or greasy topped with almond gravy and almond slivers on a bed of shredded lettuce. So good! Your server will check you out at your table which is convenient, but also a little awkward since he or she will be in front of you when the machine prompts for a tip and a rating of your meal and service. This was not a deterrent since everything was wonderful. Hoping they will add a dessert item or two to the menu someday. Okay when looking at the photos of this food I was sure it was going to be amazing . I mean it's an Asian fusion menu of sorts what could go wrong? Unfortunately everything I ordered was terrible . I got Mapo Tofu which is so simple and basic how could anyone mess this up ? It was cooked in some weird gravy pastey sauce that could have been a packet of Au ju and cornstarch blended . It didn't even come close to any Mapo Tofu dish I have ever had . Next was those potatoes, bleh ! They don't have an identity , they are not French fries or pomme frites, I have no idea what they were going for but the potato was ruined here. The added small weird sauce or relish (I couldn't tell) over the top also a flavor fail . I won't be returning until I see better reviews on these dishes . read more

We ended up asking for sides of garlic chilli to make it a bit better. They sell mini cocktails but we ordered a regular sized one that came out in tiny glasses. Simply put, nothing was amazing. Wontons were bland (didn't taste truffle at all) and the sauce just tasted like vinegar. Shrimp were crispy and cooked well but again, flavor was whatever. Some bites were so peppery it was off putting. Other bites were pretty dang good. The bulgogi was definitely the best dish, but nothing outstanding. Beef was tender, but the dish was like 60% onion. I've been here twice in the last 7 days and plan to go as often as I can. The whole vibe is very old school Portland, funky, chic and approachable. The food is comforting, delicious and affordable. Favorite dishes include the strange yet addictive almond chicken, the fried Ota tofu, the dumplings and cabbage. Sabrina the GM was bartending on my first visit and though we've never met, I immediately felt warm and welcome like we had known each other for years. The food was generally "just ok" and there isn't anything I'd come back for. We tried dishes such as the tofu, cabbage, wontons, crab rangoon, fried potatoes, bulgogi, cucumbers, and fried chicken. Their namesake chicken dish left us a bit confused as it was quite bland and an unexpected combination. I was excited to try this place based on social media hype, however, was underwhelmed with the food. The service was lacking. They messed up our group reservation (they reserved the table for the wrong time) and were not very polite about it when the issue was on their end and the comments made to us felt very accusatory. Later on they said the "owner" made a mistake after we showed them proof but also claimed that they called us, however, we did not receive a call. The restaurant was maybe a quarter full and I thought the table was ready for us after they re-set it up so I sat down. They asked me to get up and to sit at the bar until my party arrived. I got up and literally took 2-3 steps to sit at the bar for a couple of minutes. That's a strange "policy" that was unnecessarily forced at that moment, especially after the initial encounter. We were pleasantly surprised by this place. Not that expectations were low, they weren't. It just exceeded. It had been on the list for a while and we finally got there. I was expecting the servings to be kind of small plates, but they definitely were not, we had enough to split some to take home. We had crispy Ota tofu, crispy potatoes (which are kind of a shredded hash brown version), Crab noodles, hand pulled cabbage and bok choy with mushrooms. Everything was really flavorful and fresh. The bok choy was my favorite but pretty saucy. Finished that off with some sake. Our server was so great helping us through. She had great energy and was super engaging. Excellent and attentive service without being annoying. We didn't have a reservation but got a table, and they even fast-tracked our order since we were on a bit of a time crunch. The two dishes we had -- the signature almond chicken and the shrimp entree -- were unlike anything we've had before, in a good way. The almond sauce was slightly sweet and complimented the beautifully fried and tender chicken. The shrimp were large and flavorful. Went in to get dinner the other night with my family! The ambiance was welcoming, along with the staff. We started off with some of their specialty cocktails, and boy were they good. The server was super sweet and guided us through the menu, and helped us decide which of the dishes we wanted. It was family style, which we LOVED!!!
