Vibes: Cool, laid back but also giving upscale as well. Perfect for any occasion, can dress up or down. Service: Was good. We received a large bottle of water at our table, so the server didn't have to worry about making multiple trips to refill our glasses. Food: Was amazing! I love Asian food and it didn't disappoint. It may be my new favorite Asian restaurant in Iowa! I opted for the Pad Thai Beef, medium spice and the food was served hot, and the flavors were incredible. Everyone enjoyed their entrees. Pricing: A little pricey but worth it for the value. Location/Parking: Plenty of parking and easy to locate. So glad I had the opportunity to try when I was in the area, and I will be back soon.

Located about a mile south of Iowa State's athletic facilities, Wasabi is a quality Asian fusion experience that combines convenience, service, and a terrific menu. My favorite person and I were looking for an Ames restaurant to grab an early dinner and luckily chose Wasabi. We had never visited it previously. A private parking lot made it easy. Greeted warmly at the door by the staff. Comfortable seating, followed by kind service and an exciting menu, and I was already having a good night! Chloe, our server, was kind, knowledgeable, and professional, setting the tempo and vibe from the onset. She recommended our spicy garlic edamame appetizer, which was terrific (vegan, BTW) and lived up to its spicy name. The pork dumplings were so good. I should have ordered miso soup because, well, I LOVE miso soup. I wavered and decided to get sushi for some reason. No regrets because the salmon teriyaki was well-proportioned, served flawlessly, complimented by an excellent array of vegetables, and overall so tasty. We were never rushed, despite a busy night, and the overall vibe was comfy and intimate. A health score of 100/100 was comforting. The hotel was less than a mile from Highway 35 and 30, along with most local hotels. I'm returning on one of my many Ames visits and looking forward to that next visit.

Visited a great little spot in Ames, which stood out for its outstanding customer service and an impressive wine selection at great prices. The food was decent--nothing spectacular, but satisfying for a casual meal. Definitely worth checking out for a relaxed dining experience in town!

We've been here a couple of times when visiting our daughter who attends Iowa State University. Located close to campus, this Wasabi location doesn't compromise authentic Japanese cuisine because it's in a college town. Food always taste great, marinating Japanese flavors into every dish! From appetizers to sushi to main dishes and to drinks, everything is well balanced and decently priced for a sushi restaurant. The restaurant space is elegant, dark wood furnishings, with a couple of tv's discreetly located in the corners of the restaurant so you can still keep an eye on the current college game going on. The greeters for the restaurant was welcoming and kind. Our servers though on our two most recent visits seemed unenthused to be there. Our order was correct, and they kept checking in on us to be sure we had everything we needed, but they just seemed unhappy and bothered. Servers in my opinion don't have to be over that top friendly, but they should make the dining experience at least pleasant. We'll be back again and hopefully the servers will be better.

Honestly wasn't expecting to find a sushi place in Ames! Decided to grab some takeout and placed an order over the phone. My family and I shared a Sushi Platter, which came out to be about $98. The platter came with various rolls, but mainly had rolls with imitation crab salad or spicy tuna. There was only one roll with raw fish, which was surprising... I wish there were more raw fish instead of imitation crab. Overall, it was decent though and better than I expected.

Their sushi is probably some of the best you can find in land-locked Iowa. Their appetizers are solid. Delivery is always fast.

Stopped in on Saturday for lunch after shopping at the mall. Was a little difficult to find,…read morebecause the location on yelp is a little off. Was promptly seated and didn't have to wait long to get my order in or receive my food. Now I was in early so I could see how it could get busy as service picks up because seating can be a little limited. The restaurant was clean and decorated well enough. The location doesn't do it many favors but the food is good so I'll likely come back. I requested the New Delhi-Style Noodles because I enjoy yellow curry dishes and was needless to say I was impressed. The vermicelli noodles were great dipped into the accompanying fish sauce with curried chicken bites in between. The portion was solid for lunch and I didn't feel like I needed more to get me through until dinner. Only gripe is maybe the price is a little high for anything other than chicken but that's life right now. I'll likely stop back in to try a few more dishes when I'm back in the area.

Tried Vietopia (carryout), and overall...we left a little confused…read more The wings were honestly the highlight--really, really good. Didn't get much "lemon pepper," but still super flavorful. Potstickers were just okay. The dipping sauce didn't do them any favors--this felt like an easy upgrade they're missing. Imperial Egg Rolls were the biggest letdown. At $17 for three, I expected something memorable...they just weren't. Pad Thai landed squarely in "average." Grilled Honey Roast Chicken Egg Noodles was a mixed bag. The chicken itself was delicious, but the noodles were pretty bland--and oddly, they didn't really work together. Royal Fried Rice was a win. The combo of BBQ pork, sweet sausage, and shrimp came together really well. Seafood Noodle dish was unfortunately pretty bland. All in all, a few bright spots, but not a place we're rushing back to--though I'd reorder those wings without hesitation.

Hawker Kitchen brings authentic Malaysian street food flavors right into the heart of Des Moines,…read moreand it's a spot that feels both comforting and exciting if you're craving Southeast Asian dishes. Char Kueh Teow This dish stood out immediately which has a smoky wok hei flavor (the "breath of the wok") coated the flat rice noodles, giving them that deep caramelized edge that's hard to find outside of Malaysia. The prawns were plump and juicy, and the mix of soy, garlic, and chili gave just the right balance of savory and spicy. Fresh cucumbers and pickled vegetables on the side added a refreshing crunch, making each bite balanced and addictive. Laksa Rich, creamy, and fragrant, the laksa broth was a highlight. The curry coconut base carried layers of spice without being overwhelming, and every sip warmed you from the inside out. The noodles were cooked just right, with toppings that tied it together from seafood to herbs. It's the kind of bowl that makes you pause between spoonfuls just to savor the aroma. Satay The chicken satay had a lovely turmeric and lemongrass marinade, grilled to a slight char that locked in the smoky flavor. Tender on the inside with crispy edges, it paired perfectly with the bold, nutty, and slightly spicy peanut dipping sauce. The cucumber slices on the side helped cut through the richness, just like you'd get back at a hawker stall in Malaysia. Overall Hawker Kitchen is a gem for anyone looking for authentic Malaysian comfort food in Des Moines. Portions are generous, flavors are bold and true to their roots, and the variety on the menu makes it worth repeat visits. If you're new to Malaysian cuisine, start with the satay and char kueh teow; if you're a fan already, the laksa will feel like home.

Another one that's been on my list for a bit... I was out in the Northern part of Ankeny this…read moremorning and knew Hawker's Kitchen was just around the corner from where I was. And "around the corner" right now is kind of subjective with the construction on Ankeny Boulevard... If I recall correctly Hawker's Kitchen opened later in 2024. October maybe? The food spans comfort staples from Malaysia, Singapore, Korea, Japan, and Thailand among other regions of Southeast Asia. I'd browsed the online menu but still wasn't exactly sure what to expect when I walked in. It's located in a strip so there is plenty of parking. It's order and pay at the front counter. They have a digital menu board and a hard copy menu available if you want to use that. Take a seat and they bring your food to you when it's ready. Coke fountain drinks as well as the other available drinks on the menu. Seating is mostly low top tables and chairs with a few booth table chair combos along the wall. They bus your table when you're done eating. I noticed a couple outdoor tables too as I walked in... I arrived at about 1115 am today (Saturday) and the restaurant seemed immaculately clean. I ordered the following. I was told my wait would be around 10 min. I think it took a little less than that. One Curry Puff. Described on their menu as: "A crispy pastry filled with curried potatoes, onions, and seasoned meat. A popular snack in Southeast Asia known for its spicy-sweet flavor and golden-brown crust." Sausage with sticky rice. "Asian sausage with sticky rice. Common street food that one can find in Laos and Thailand." Roti John Sandwich. "A popular Malaysian and Singaporean street food sandwich that blends western and asian flavors. Filled with curried beef, eggs, mozzarella cheese, shredded cabbage & carrots with mayo and sweet chili sauce." I didn't need to order that much... Just the sandwich would have been fine for a lunch... But it was something new to try and one item wasn't going to be enough from a curiosity standpoint alone... This would be a great place to take a few friends and do a family style meal! Everything tasted wonderful! I loved the sauce that came with the sticky rice. The curried beef in the sandwich... Wow about says what I want to say about the beef. There is SO much more I want to try! The BBQ puffs, the shrimp pancakes, their beef bulgogi, mee siam, and char kuay teo beef... A nice selection of boba, teas, fizzes, and sweets. Thank God they have a rewards program and a discount when you sign up for it... Cause I'll be back! I'm not sure what is going on, but once again... The staff here was fantastic! Incredible service! I've had a really great run of eating out lately and being treated very well across the board. From everyone working the front to a gentleman who came out from the back, when he saw my Navy cap, to thank me for my service. I was greeted when I walked in. Any questions I had were answered patiently. I stopped by the front to say thank you when I left and everyone was so friendly... Then I headed on my way... A stellar visit with Hawker's Kitchen! https://hawkers-kitchen.com/
