We don't have too many bodegas in downtown Winston so I'm glad that Washington Perk exists. I like to grab a quick breakfast before work and sometimes lunch at the deli. I will pick up grocery items for the house. Most of their stuff is from local sources and small producers. They make their own ice cream. They have dry goods, baked goods and produce. Out coffee shop hopping downtown and came into this lovely little treasure. Had a total locals feel and so many different shopping experiences to try. They had a sandwich bar in the back, frozen refrigerator isles in the middle of food, and a coffee bar area in the front. I ordered a soy latte and it was so good. My husband said his drip coffee was a good brew and he enjoyed it. It was such a cute set up and we felt so comfortable there. The barista was welcoming and friendly. More Praise for the Perk People Washington Perk employees consistently go above and beyond for their customers. I am recovering from lung cancer surgery and am essentially homebound for the next two weeks. I received a surprise delivery this week. A Perk employee delivered a smoothie, sausage biscuit, and a paper bag stuffed with goodies and signed with get well wishes from the morning crew. Among other items, the bag contained a stuffed unicorn and a giant grape Laffy Taffy. Grape Laffy Taffy's are my favorite candy, and I routinely visit Perk several times each week to purchase the small version. When Crystal, the owner of Perk, learned of my affinity for this candy, she ensured they were always in stock. Sadly, the small grape Laffy Taffy's have been discontinued. I was excited to get the giant grape Laffy Taffy in my gift bag, and even more pleased that Perk now stocks it. They added it just for me so I can always have my favorite candy. This gesture shows that Washington Perk always goes the extra mile to provide exceptional service and care for its customers. Pretty good breakfast bagel sandwiches at a very reasonable price. For under $5, I had Pat's Special, an everything bagel packed with sausage, egg, cheddar cheese, cream cheese, spinach, tomato and red onion. The bagel was soft and fresh, and the sandwich was pretty filling. The bacon, egg and cheese bagel was also good but much smaller than the special. I also had a drip coffee, and noticed their coffee prices are much lower than most competitors nearby. The coffee was good, but I prefer a dark roast and this one was a medium roast. The rest of the store is pretty cool with fresh produce, dairy, dry goods and a nice selection of beers and a few wines. There's a deli in the back with bagels, sandwiches and salads. It's perfect for those staying in nearby hotels, or a quick grocery needs for nearby residents. We also got a Fluffernutter sandwich... just because nobody ever has one on the menu. read more

The staff of Washington Perk are rude and prejudice. Recently my husband and I visited Washington Perk for coffee. After we were served our coffee my husband asked the young woman behind the counter for a sample of ice cream. She refused him service. Only 30 seconds before she had completed a purchase of another customer who she also had an extensive conversation with all the while ignoring my husband. When he asked for a sample her response was, "No, I'm done" and walked out of the door. When my husband asked to speak to a manager he was told that the manager was not there, but to speak with an employee who had been there for awhile. My husband spoke with said employee and began walking toward the front of the store. As I watched a woman stood up, turned in our direction and flipped my husband off. I then walked back to ask why she would do such a thing when she proceeded to scream and curse in my face. When I asked her name she informed me she was the owner. I don't believe that this woman was at all the owner. I suggest that the next time you want coffee step across the street to Camino where the staff is civilized. If you are the owner of Washington Perk I would love to talk to you. read more

When I went back to the deli there was no one there. Finally the guy working who was sitting at a table got up and walked over. When I asked about sandwich toppinga he told me the little paper on the table had the toppings. I decided against the sandwich cause there werent any toppings i wanted. When I went to the front I decided to get a bag of combos and a can come. We stood there awhile waiting, no one in sight I thought the fuy making coffees was the only register clerk. They got a lot going on here for a small place. Coffee shop, a deli, and a mini market. So the grocery items are really just the essentials and a few speciality items. If you live or work downtown then it is a quick and convenient place to get a six pack of beer, milk or a bottle of wine. You are paying the price for convenience but nothing outrageous. It's part of the trade off. The beer selection is pretty good for a small store. The wine selection is small but doable if you are in a pinch. I personally think it is cool that they also serve coffee and have deli inside the market. read more

This review is based on my deli counter experience today. One of the specials was brie, bacon and fresh pear - I added fresh spinach - on grilled sourdough. It was a delicious sandwich! In time, some sides other than chips would be welcome. (I understand the store is in a transition phase, and - with the exception of a selection of beer and wine, along with canned goods and a few sundries ... the shelves were pretty bare. I hope the store can find its niche, and can also become a great neighborhood coffee shop!) read more

The coffee was better than expected and they have a pretty good selection of sandwiches to choose from. The service was fast and friendly towards us. This place can be pretty expensive but in a crunch, they are clutch. They offer all kinds of staple groceries, like beer and wine. They have a deli in the back that I really want to try, ice cream and coffee. They are quite the staple in downtown and everyone should stop in for a fresh cup of coffee and one point while strolling downtown. read more

Bad customer service. I come in, no one says "hello" or asks if I need anything, but I always feel watched. I bring my own bags but they never bag my things in them. One time I stated that I had my own bags and the cashier said, "Of course you do" before putting all of my things into a plastic bag. It feels as if they are doing me the favor of allowing me to shop here. Like many hipster establishments, if you are like the owner and cashiers then you will likely get good service so it's probably their way of weeding out people they don't want in their establishment without being overtly discriminatory. It could fill a void if it were properly and consistently stocked, but I think it should stop positing itself as a consignment store and just stick to frozen custard, lunch, and beer and wine. Compared to other consignment shops in places like Durham that actually have groceries and real customer service, Washington Perk pales in comparison but could be much more. In college 2013-2014, I used to go here because it was close and I had no where else to go, but having lived in Raleigh and Durham in the five years since, this place has a long way to go and should decide what type of store it wants to be--and part of that means actually being a part of the community and providing good customer service to all, not just some. read more

I appreciate Washington perk just for being there. It's very convenient for me as sometimes an office I work at is on 4th street. The staff is always nice and helpful and I usually can find what I need. They have sandwiches made to order in the back, I've only had one, but it was yummy. They have wine and beer and a little area to chill if you want to enjoy your purchases there. The only drawback is the employees smoke cigarettes in the entryway. This is super annoying to me as a non smoker and being allergic to cigarettes. When people go in and out of the door the smoke rolls in and then the perk and I smell like smoke. The only drawback of this place, however, winston def needs the perk downtown. One suggestion would be that they stay open later on weekends, 3am would be good ;) read more
