I've been coming to First Carolina Delicatessen for over a decade. Since I don't live close to Spring Garden anymore I don't get to come nearly as much as I would like. Luckily I was close by on Thursday and got to dine in. It looks just as nostalgic as it always has and the food was just as delicious as it's always been over the years. The restaurant was clean and the staff is so friendly and personable. I don't think they know a stranger and it made my dining experience that much more enjoyable. My boss and I both got the Arlington, which has been my go to forever, and we were both in heaven. Each and every time they're always perfect and definitely very filling. The service is always very friendly and helpful and there to give good recommendations or answer any questions you might have. It's very old-time inside like an old deli back from the 1950s. All of their meat, cheese, and everything else is always very fresh. You can also buy sliced meat or cheese in bulk. I haven't been to First Carolina Deli in years but I'm happy to say it's still as delicious as I remember. The deli is unassuming and cozy with lots of casual table and booth seating. I had a make your own cold deli sandwich and the roast beef was beautifully thin and rare. It's served with a bag of chips (or carrot sticks) and a crunchy dill pickle slice. I also got some homemade gluten free peanut butter cookies. They were soft and yummy. I forgot until I was getting ready to leave that they have a large variety of Dr Brown's sodas. I'm not much of a soda person but I love Dr Brown's black cherry and even better they had the Diet version. What a special treat. It was near the end of the lunch rush so seating was limited, but still had two open. The waitress was there quickly with a menu, but I didn't need one. I had the 'Sailor' with a side of hot German Potato Salad. And of course, it came with chips and a pickle. The 'Sailor" is pastrami with a link of Knockwurst and the best mustard in town. I will start this review by saying that full transparency, my family and I have been dining at First Carolina and what used to be its sister deli, Lox Stock & Bagel, for years and years and it is just as delicious now as it was the first time I dined there, over 20 years ago! I have yet to find a competitor in the area. There just isn't anything quite like it around. It's a classic style deli ambiance, with glass case items for order/purchase, but offers many dine-in options. The parking lot can be really painful, especially during peak times. (Lox Stock is better but can also be packed). And I wouldn't recommend parking at a nearby business and walking over due to the risk of towing (it's very close to UNCG so businesses are STRICT about this). The service is always wonderful, quick, and generally you're in and out. Ordering a takeout over the phone is also super simple and efficient. Now for the most important part. THE FOOD! Y'all, these sandwiches are DIVINE! I've literally never had a bad experience...ever. That says a lot as we come here nearly once a week. Here are my recommendations for must tries: -Arlington (pictured): Fresh, shaven Boar's Head turkey topped with melty Muenster cheese, topped with crisp lettuce and sliced tomato & creamy mayonnaise, on an onion roll. 10/10. Can't recommend enough. So simple, but so delicious. -Italian Sub: I struggle to choose between this one and the aforementioned masterpiece depending on my mood. You can get it cold or hot and I always go hot. It says a lot that I love this sandwich and it doesn't come served with mayo, but IMHO it really doesn't need it! The spice from the cherry peppers compliments the meat and toppings phenomenally. -Emerson: My mom's absolute favorite. It's shaved chicken with cheddar, lettuce, tomato & mayo on a sub roll. Unique and always hits the spot! Other suggestions: -Cheddar & Bacon Burger (yes! Trust me) -Pasta salad (beware if you're not a fan of olives, though) -Baked beans -Chicken salad (best in town, respectfully :)) -German potato salad If you're still reading, you must be a dedicated deli fan such as myself, which means you HAVE to give First Carolina (or Lox Stock) a try. Picking a sandwich chain over this place is like picking Arby's steak bites over a perfectly cooked medium rare wagyu ribeye steak. We got food from here the first time a couple of nights ago. My girl got the Belmar and I got the Italian sailor. I ordered it at 8:05 and it was ready in just a few minutes. My girl didn't get home from work until 8:35 and even though they had sat in the steam of their own making for 30 minutes and the bread had gotten a little soggy, they still were out of this word. I used to love coming here. Being from NJ, it's hard to find food that feels like home (iykyk). After almost 4 years in Greensboro, this place was always one of my favorites that gave me that familiar comfort. But today (6/27/25), I really regretted stopping by. It was busy, which I totally understand--but what happened was hard to ignore. As I waited near the front, I was standing next to two white gentlemen. I was the first to arrive. A staff member (no name tags, unfortunately) came up and greeted them warmly while completely ignoring me--a person of color. When she finally did acknowledge me, it felt forced and dismissive, like she didn't want to speak to me at all. I've never left here feeling disrespected before, but today I did. It was subtle, but blatant at the same time. It's disappointing to be treated like an afterthought somewhere you've supported and genuinely enjoyed. I've never been to a cool old NYC Delicatessen but I imagine they look JUST like this!!! Great decor, glass case full of meat, cheese, freshly baked bread and desserts. Online ordering made things incredibly easy. Curbside or inside pick up available. The bread is on point!!! Flavorful and fresh. We tried the sub roll, rye and white bread and all were delicious. I was extremely busy and didn't cook, so the first thing I thought was "where's the best AND fastest place to get something good for dinner?" My order, Verona sandwiches add smoked salmon, never disappoint! We toggled with whether or not to leave the red onions on, but they just make the sandwich (you might have to pull a few of them off). We also shared a small serving of macaroni salad which was plenty, and a "Megaroon" I believe, which is pretty much a brownie with coconut and chocolate on top.
