Every single time I come to The City I have to go to Wasteland!! I always find AMAZING stuff there! My last purchase was a $4600 Gucci purse for $200! I have also gotten a Prada belt and Gucci sandals (both $75 ea), a Prada skirt for $45, a Louis Vuitton jacket for $150 and many other goodies here over the years. Stopped in on a trip from Seattle after hearing about how amazing it was. It lived up to its expectations! Store is really elegantly laid out. Security staff was kind and helped me with my bag while I shopped. Prices are what I would expect from a consignment shop selling designer brands. Great selection of items! Definitely one of the better vintage spots about Upper Haight. I've pretty much always walked out with something interesting -- be that a designer pair of shoes or a vintage dress. They've a small section of fully vintage bits, but honestly for me, it's all about the designer steals! You've gotta rummage a fair bit, but that's the same in any store. If I'm ever in the neighborhood, I'll always pop in. Staff are sound, racks are full, but prepare to spend a few hours getting to the good stuff. Love the shoe section! read more

The worst thing you can do in a store like Wasteland is be rushed and not in the mood to do some serious sifting. And even though I did exactly those two things I still had a pretty sharp experience here, enough so that I can guarantee my return when I have a need for clothing and have at least an hour to peruse and some expendable cash in my pocket. This was yet another stop in my quest to find a '20s era costume, and though Wasteland is more resale than costume, they actually had a (sort of) dress that a little more than casually ripped and definitely 100% sheer and requiring a pretty heavy-duty slip or under-something, but in hindsight I probably should have bought because it was world's cheaper than the costume quality dress I did get and it actually could have been turned into a pretty glitzy number if you had a needle, thread, and maybe an extra hour and half to sew some of the more tattered parts of the very delicate dress back together. The dress I tried on was one I saw about 3 seconds after walking in on the first mannequin as you enter the shop. A guy behind the counter saw me eye some of the other personnel to inquire about the garment and came right over to assist me. He quickly took down the form, undressed it as I awkwardly looked on and then asked if he also felt weird about me watching him undress a rather shapely mannequin. He did not respond, so I can only assume that he either felt extremely uncomfortable or really really liked my peeping tom-ness. He set me up with a dressing room and I asked if I could peruse a bit more before going in... but that was before I realized that the racks are organized in kind of no particular order, era, or size, and that finding something else to fit my very specific needs for this shopping excursion might actually be harder than finding a needle in a haystack. The dressing rooms are private and clean and though I opted not to get the dress due to its sheerness, I would come back in a heartbeat to not only spend some dough, but to totally swipe some their mannequin style because those inanimate models are actually pretty put together in a way that I some day hope to be. read more

First time attempting to sell and it was such a horrible experience I never want to step foot in this place forever LOL. I read other people's reviews about the bad attitude of their employees and it is all true how they are lazy, slow, do not want to look over your clothes, acting like they are doing you a favor for doing their job. I was not helped even tho the store was literally like a graveyard. I had to approach an employee for help, "disturbing" her online shopping sesh. Store employees acting like they work at Chanel. Shopping experience here is great, as long as you don't expect any customer service. Selling experience is completely ridiculous. Note: I used to be a buyer for a fashion company, and while I prefer dressing unobtrusively, I own and buy nice stuff. The one time I tried to sell here, here's what happened: The buyer looks me up and down and then puts my stuff on the counter. I leave to browse the store. 3 minutes later the buyer finds me and tells me they aren't taking anything. I take my stuff and leave. When I get home, I see that my neatly folded clothes are completely untouched in the bags I took in. If the buyers here are getting paid to judge ineffectively, they are nailing it. If they're being paid to, you know, buy stuff, then Wasteland might want to invest in some new employees. read more

I actually LOVE this store and usually find really unique pieces that I end up wearing a lot. I live right down the street so I often can't help stop in when walking home from the market. However, I can only give it 1 star because of the staff. I have been in this store dozens of times and I can only recall one time when I had a moderate experience with a staff member. Other than that, every other time the staff members are in their own world. In my many experiences they do not greet people, they are extremely unhelpful even when you do have a specific question, and they apparently hate conversation because I have tried on multiple accounts to have a friendly conversation at the checkout. I can remember one instance when I was paying and the woman did not say one word to me the entire process of checking me out, even after I said hello. I rarely do bad yelp reviews but it's just disappointing having a great store like this right down the road from me, yet I never feel welcome when I go in. :( read more

I hate thrift stores because I'm lazy and hate to look through stuff I'm mostly not interested in, but I just couldn't say no to Wasteland. Their spacious arrangement of old soft tees, hip flannel, leather jackets, boots and shoes, made this lady go gaga. Ha. I scored a pair of blue boots for 30 bucks and as far as I could tell everything seemed pretty reasonably priced. If you avoid vintage stores because they make you feel claustrophobic and/or if you're going for that indie cowboy look, this is the place for you. read more

I've been here a few times and never bought anything because I don't find anything I like or because it's over priced. I brought in some clothing to sell, mostly American Apparel, Free People, and some others. They didn't take any of my items (even the new with tags $150 lamb skin skirt) and told me they only buy vintage items, to try crossroads across the street. But when I was browsing through while waiting to be called I saw several H&M pieces? I also saw the same pair of pants twice, one priced at $42, the other at $52. The only thing that caught my eye was a small navy blue Rebecca Minkoff crossbody bag. At a closer look I found that it looked really used and it was priced at $115! Total rip off. Something like that at a Crossroads or another thrift store would be much, much cheaper. I went to buffalo exchange after because it was a bit closer than crossroads. They took a bunch of my items and loved them. I got $39 cash. The staff here isn't very warm and friendly. They definitely don't set a good vibe for customers. I wouldn't come back again. read more

While exploring Haight Ashbury, I stopped by the "land of waste" for some fashion options. It's touted as a vintage clothing store, but I'd definitely place this more on the boutique side of shopping. They definitely had some used and cool vintage-y options, but they also had new clothing options as well. The used stuff was a bit pricey, BUT it was top quality stuff. Lately, I find myself going to the sweater rack first (we all have to have a Cosby sweater, don't we?!). No, but seriously, I like running my fingers on the shoulders of all the sweaters and detecting the softness of cashmere. If I find a cashmere sweater, I have to snag it. I lucked out and totally found one here and it was reasonably priced. The guy who rung me up was super nice. I actually wasn't having a great day (ended up missing my flight home early that morning---freakin long security line at SFO! And I also lost my debit card during the BART ride up to the city). It was alright though, it's just life. There's no need to take menial things like this seriously. There are too much beauty in this world (like cashmere). I paid for my sweater, the guy offered some positive words, and I was off. Actually, I put on the sweater before I hit the street. That cheered me up, and I ended up having a GREAT day in SF. read more

WOW, this place is great! Sure the racks upon racks of authentic vintage clothing just about had me drop my panini and newly purchased water bong, but really the staff is what will keep me coming back for more! Their window displays are always eye-catching and I was a long time fan of the store. However, over the years it has changed its inventory to include more new clothing. I find their vintage clothing selection much more interesting, so the shift is in my opinion, not an improvement. All of the vintage clothing on Haight St. is overpriced and Wasteland is no exception; however, the prices aren't that bad and they are more selective about what they carry. You'll find lots of '60s and '70s dresses and the shoe section is always worth a look. They carry handbags, scarves, belts and jewelry. The layout leaves plenty of room for maneuvering and makes for a pleasant shopping experience. read more

Every vintage store has undesirables mixed in with the good stuff. It's your job to scour the place and find the booty. I buy something every time I come here. Maurice, store manager, runs a tight ship. His workers are sharp, helpful and not pretentious. What's the deal with people thinking the Wasteland people are rude? When would they have time to give anyone attitude? I was in there once and this homeless dude brought in this giant costco size bag of pretzels and just dropped it off in the buying area and left. Then some crazy woman came in and threw that same giant bag of pretzels over her shoulder and walked out with them. 10 minutes later the crazy smelly guy came back in and demanded to know where his pretzels went. Like seriously yelling at the adorable girl at the counter. True story. And I don't think this kind of thing is a rare occasion. Personally I would freak the eff out if this happened to me on a daily basis. Also the people that work at the Wasteland love our baby Lulu. When we come in you can hear the coo's from across the giant store. Every single one of them stops by to smile and wave at her. And guess what? If you take a minute to talk to the employees I bet they'll even remember your name next time you go in. Of course you'll have to catch them while they are cleaning up the huge mess someone made in the shoe section, or while they wipe up whoknowswhat in the dressing room (bet you wouldn't want to do that) to have said conversation, but it would probably be worth it. I love this place and I love the people. I've been seeing the same staff for like 5 years and that's saying something, these people are saints for putting up with this crap. And another thing! Anyone who knows me knows that I consider myself to be a Sacramento ambassador, and would never say an unkind word about my River City (the idea that there are a ton of amenities, shops and stores in SF that don't exist in Sac tends to be a bit elitist and untrue). With that being said, I must admit that Wasteland presents a hybrid that the 916 simply doesn't have. Sure, Sacramento has some great boutiques (Krazy Mary's and Sugar Shack actually carry some of the same brands as Wasteland), and definitely has some interesting vintage (thinking specifically of Bows and Arrows and the gorgeous Audrey Wells at Fringe). Wasteland combines the best of both however. Awesome new stuff - the funkiest, coolest brands. Soft cozy tee-shirts, sassy dresses, trendy items. But their vintage is off the hook. Best used clothing I have ever encountered. The BEST designer brands - Marc Jacobs, Stella McCartney, Betsey Johnson, Nanette Lapore - for pennies on the dollar. I just moved in 5 blocks away. Upon spying me in my Free People witchy layer skirt my lovely Lyft driver dropped me off directly in front of your store and told me I simply must begin my Haight-Ashbury shopping adventures in your hallowed walls. She was right. I walked in and I was home. The hardwood floor, the racks upon racks upon racks of high quality consignment (or was it thrift?), the large quantities of black and back wall lined with boots, I found my clothing dream land. Oh what's this? A Betsy Johnson dress for $50? Oh look here! The knee high heeled black boots I've been searching for for six months! Oh wow, a corset-style black dress that makes me look like sex walking? I'll take it! If I had to choose one store to shop at for the rest of my life (And heaven forbid that ever happen), you would be that store. I struggled with this review because I had such an incredibly varied experience with different aspects of this store. Pros: -Amazingly curated cute clothes. If you're looking for Gucci for cheap, this is probably not the place. But if you know your middle-end designer brands you can score an awesome deal. I got a reformation dress that usually resells for around 80-150 for thirty bucks. Honestly, it's so refreshing to have a designer thrift store cater to a younger crowd without only including the "famous" brands. It's not a thrift store, but if you're looking for quality and know how to authenticate yourself, than you can get some truly gorgeous pieces. - There was such a sweet girl who held my clothes while I put coins in the meter. There are some very nice employees. -The buying experience was fairly good. There was a little iffy-ness in how they treated the items the didn't want + it was a little anxiety racking, but they're there for efficiency which is understandable. Plus the immediate payout is amazing and very much worth it to me. If you have a thick skin, selling here is a good option. I don't know any selling experience that is enjoyable, but this wasn't bad. Cons: - It is a bit on the expensive side for the higher-end brands. -You need to be able to authenticate yourself - I was taken to the side by one of the employees who asked if I needed a two items I left in the changing room. When I said no, he made a face and said it was rude for me to leave it in the room. Keep in mind their were no signs that I saw and no clothes on the rack. The last four places I was in asked for us to leave things in the dressing room, because they didn't want clients risking putting clothes in the wrong space during covid. I get that store culture differs, and I've worked retail so I also understand annoying customer practices, but usually we just roll our eyes and continue. It was honestly a little unnecessary, and I'd never really had anything happen like the before. I was buying a bunch of items, and wanted to go back and look for more, but I felt uncomfortable after that interaction, and ended up paying and leaving. With some exceptions, the staff was pretty cold. It definitely left an impression. I'll probably go back, but I'm a little hesitant just because of the uncomfortability of the whole situation. I would recommend the store if you're in the area- but only for people with a thick skin. read more

This is definitely a cool place to check out when exploring down Haight Ashbury, and the vibrant sign atop the red store will certainly catch your attention and draw you in! Once you enter, you will see that it is a long open space with rows and rows of neatly organized unique and timeless secondhand clothing. There is something for everyone here, and I enjoy getting lost perusing through all the racks to find items of clothing I won't find anywhere else! The staff is friendly, there are plenty of seats and mirrors, and the cool music they play all contribute to the hip and eclectic vibe they want to exude. This store is only one star away from a perfect review for me because of the prices. This is not a cheap store! Be ready to spend between at least $25 to upwards of $80, which definitely puts me off when I find something I love only to see the price tag and have to drop it like it's hot. I am guilty of splurging sometimes when I really feel like it though, yet whether or not you intend to spend a lot of money, this store is certainly worth coming in and just having a good time browsing through decades and decades of forgotten (yet slowly trending again, thanks millennials) colorful and creative styles. :) read more

Wow what a huge downfall from many years ago. All they care about is designer stuff and that's it. They charge super expensive amount of dollars for used items! You got to be kidding me. The racks aren't sized at all. This is a retail trick for all of you. They don't size it because they want you to stay inside the store more to shop and hopefully buy stuff. You can't fool me Wasteland. I work in retail to know what's going on. Folks there are far better second hand stores on Haight Street that is far better and better on you're pocket book. Also I might add the prices I saw at Wasteland is the current prices at the upscale high end stores. Better yet go shop at the high end stores because you'll get you're gear fresh and new. If you know me, you know that I'm a big fan of feathers. Oversized feather earrings, in particular. After walking by Wasteland for the past 14 years, I finally decided to take a peek in here today. While I'm not really a fan of vintage, I was pretty impressed with the selection-both vintage and deadstock items. But, what I found to be the most pleasing to my eye was the large selection of bad ass feather earrings. They had humongous 14-inch pairs, down to more demure pairs as well. I also saw a brown Fendi Spy that looked to be in almost perfect shape behind the counter for $4 hundo. If it weren't for my recent splurge on a Gucci hobo, I'd TOTALLY have snatched that bitch up! I'll be back. It's definitely my kind of funky, boho/couture-vintage shop. A nice upgrade from shitty ass Crossroads down the street, and the staff was a lot friendlier as well-no self-important hipster vibe here. read more

I once got a shirt here for $0.26 that had a picture of a cat on it and said in big, hot-pink letters: LIVE PUSSY. And did I get my money's worth in that shirt! But I've only been a handful of times since the store changed ownership like a decade ago and everything got designery and super expensive. But I thought my visiting brother and his pack of 18 year-old friends would get a kick out of the place, so we strolled in. It ended up being one of our more lucrative and entertaining stops for the day--Cody trying on some leiderhosen that he threatened he was going to wear to prom, his sister making fake love to a big black hand-shaped chair, his friend finding a cute pair of coach heels that she can't wait to show off in Yuba City, and me daring his friend John to buy and wear the New Kids on the Block concert shirt (he wouldn't, so I called him not-so-live pussy). I was pleasantly suprised by the prices--not as bad as I remembered, but as Ligaya T. notes, they are kind of all over the map, with some random, thin miss sixty shirt costing $40 as well as a nice pair of 7 jeans. The natural lighting, cool staff, and lack of that moldy barf thirft store smell are definite pluses. read more

A little more expensive than most thrift shops but worth it. Where else can you pick up a full length fur coat for under $100? Whether it's real or not is questionable (i think if it's fake it would be better... i don't like the idea of being draped in real carcass lol. but that's just me no hard feelings towards those that are lovin the animal skin!) but still... it's a great place to re-invent yourself, or at least get ideas towards re inventing your style. They have great vintage suits here that help me sooooo much with my work clothes wardrobe. The accessories are hit or miss, for the price of the glasses and beads it's not so bad. I've never tried to sell anything of my own here so I can't advise on the process. One time when I went one guy was trying to sell all these Adidas shirts and they turned him down. I'm not sure what the conditions are but I felt bad for the guy :(. Last time I went I got a throwback 49ers jacket for 15 dollars and a baby tee with two girls kissing for 8. Every time I go to Wasteland my bank starts crying. I love this place. I have found so many must have pieces from my 50's pink taffeta party dress, to my red nubby swing coat, to my gold fringe purse, and of course my F-in fantastic 70's knee-high stacked boots. Great selection of stuff in every price range Why 4 stars and not 5? The staff, generally, sucks. They have this whole elitist thing about them that tends to make me see red every time I go. I came in with my dad and we sold some of my moms vintage leather pencil skirts. The staff was thrilled that the skirts were a size 0 (xxs) because they didn't have any skirts in that size in stock, hard to come by. I don't feel like the staff judged us, as other reviewers have claimed happened to them. I mean I came in with my dad, a plain guy definitely not dressed in the latest trends. We were treated respectfully and they paid much more for our items than expected. This store is overpriced though and such a pain to sift through that I usually just glance at the shoes and accessories. However I like that they have a more curated collection of goods, whereas buffalo exchange is as wild and packed as goodwill or a ross. read more

Whenever I come here I find wonderful deals! I have found two vintage Gucci bags on two separate occasions one of which is in mint condition for $75 each! I revisited on Friday and found what appears to be a brand new cashmere Marc Jacobs winter coat for $115. When I saw it my jaw dropped to the floor as my hands trembled over the price tag. I slipped it on over my sweater, waltzed over to the floor length mirror and drooled at my reflection. That coat was meant for me and me alone. And thanks to my mom, it will now be waiting for me under the Christmas tree. read more

Full disclosure: I'm not really a vintage wearing kind of girl. Love it on other people, but it's just not my jam. I do, however, drop by this place on a regular basis to scour their designer section. I only find something like every 3 to 4 trips, but when I do, it's something that deserves to be entered into the history of most amazing fashion buys ever. A $650 jacket for $40? Oh and it looks like it was tailored for me? Don't mind if I do! There's no way around it, this place is pricey. However, I walked in there the other day, after searching for a very specific pair of boots, and there they were. The boots of my dreams. That was awesome. I can't justify spending over $20 dollars on a shirt, though. Especially when Goodwill is half a block away. The staff is really hit-or-miss, too. Not all was lost! Literally the first hipster thrift store that I a) was treated like a human being at and b) found something decent enough to take. What did I take? A $26 pair of Onitsuka Tigers, baby blue with orange Adidas-esque stripes. Beautiful find! But I have to agree with most reviews that maintain that the prices are too high. There is absolutely no reason to resale a Megadeth fan t shirt from the "Rust in Peace" album for $62. Yes, you heard it! What gall in this economy! There are some shirts that will engender a mix of eye soreness and irony via its vintage comedy, like a oil-soiled t shirt from a 1988 76 Gas Station sponsored Fun Run or a classic Wolf/Indian nature sweater that simply says "Alaska" on the bottom. However, they are starting over $20. I wonder if Wasteland's namesake is a result of the consumer side of being here, or the supplier's side. It just costs too damn much for us---don't they know hipsters need food stamps just to eat? You can't discount Wasteland, though, for wasting your time. There is plenty to look at. And the men's plaid shirts keep my husband stocked in his signature," I haven't showered or shaved in a week" look. but something about it just doesn't sit well with me. Maybe it's all the tourist that buzz around this place like a termite infestation. Maybe its the fact that I've never found a single "I must own this or I seriously might die" piece.
