So it seems like people know about this place; but I still feel like, at least for dine in, it feels like a hidden gem. We were there at 7 on a Saturday night (we were a few minutes late because we had a little trouble finding parking) and there was one other couple there and a small birthday party in the other section, but that was it. Whatever they're doing here for dine in, they need to keep doing. It's amazing. If dine in is this good, their catering must be insanely good. Service was wonderfully attentive. We both did the retaurant week menu, which is a great deal for $45 per person. Between us, we got the Maple salmon, Teriyaki chicken (with truffle oil pommes frites), "unconventional Caesar" salad, chicken dumplings appetizer and Sweet potato bread pudding for dessert. Everything was honestly amazing and so tasty. The chicken was succulent and pulled apart easily and the fries were delightful. My wife loved her salmon. Our appetizers were great. This is a small but REALLY nice restaurant! While there was music playing, it was still quiet enough to have a conversation without feeling the need to yell. Sean (the owner) provided SPECTACULAR service with wonderful recommendations. Since we were the first to arrive for the day, he allowed us to choose our own seating. I cannot express how wonderful this restaurant is. The personal touches. Upon arrival we were the only ones there. We were able to speak with him he waiter regarding the menu as well as the chef's background. The restaurant has an open kitchen concept, so we could see the chef at work. To start we had Chicken Dumplings and Duck Poutine. Both were truly an experience. For entrees we ordered Red Snapper, Blue Plate, one had pork, one did not, and the Chefs cut. All was amazing. It's been years since I've had Water For Chocolate and I'm so glad to be back! The last time I was here was for brunch during COVID and it was pickup/delivery. I remember the polenta dish being excellent and the to-go mimosas were yummy! But coming to this dinner here in person was SOOOOOO much better! The server was very sweet. The wine was reasonably priced- loved having a Rioja! The goat cheese mac and cheese was excellent! My bf got the shrimp and grits and loved them, the black eyed pea curry was phenomenal. Hands down the best brunch spot I've been to in a very long time. From the first bite I knew....let's just say, I had to ask the Owner Sean if he had pillows on the menu. Although small and quaint and practically hidden this place was such a gem. Servers were polite and friendly. Even though the wait for our food was long I believe it's a one man show in the kitchen who seemed to be the owner, quite frankly he was doing the damn thing and kudos to him for doing so. Went for brunch with a friend and thought the experience was pretty okay! I ordered the jerk duck confit which comes with a cornbread waffle. Loved the waffle and thought the duck was seasoned very well and the spice level was perfect! I will say, the waffle is pretty small, I think them having either 2 waffles or at least giving you a full waffle would make it better. My friend ordered the pulled pork quesadilla which he enjoyed. I will say there were little things that made me reduce points. The service was nice but I will say because there wasn't as many people when I went so they weren't as attentive. We had to get our waitress's attention a couple of times. They also didn't have small things which I would anticipate would be there for a brunch menu, like syrup. Even certain items on the menu weren't available when we went. It would be nice if these things were made known before sitting down. Closer to a 4.5 in terms of overall quality, but because the owner was so diligent and considerate, on top of the tasty dishes being extremely delicious, I am giving it 5 stars and I would recommend anyone visiting Baltimore to give it a shot. The pork belly was cooked to perfection, and the lacinato kale was the most delicious kale I have had anywhere, mainly because it's so difficult to make kale tasty. The crab quesadilla was full of crab meat inside, which was a definite plus. I personally wouldn't include rice on the side, but I could see how there could be some that would use the rice to make themselves fuller. The BBQ shrimp & grits had a good amount of jumbo shrimp, and the sauce didn't taste like anything I have ever had in shrimp & grits, and tasted pretty good. The jalapeño cornbread was very tasty! The salmon belly tacos had spoiled salmon so we didn't get to taste the actual taco. However, the owner was considerate enough to take it off of our bill, which we thought was very nice, because we only sought to let our server know to ensure the salmon didn't get to other customers. It's a small spot so you should definitely make a reservation rather than relying on walking in for a table. We actually did not anticipate a reservation but the host juggled some tables around to fit us in and was extremely gracious about it! They have fresh squeezed OJ for their mimosas (by the glass or carafe) which were delicious, and French press coffee; both of these come in quantities perfect for sharing with a table of four. The menu is seasonal with some permanent items. We had the challah French toast which was a huge portion considering it was an appetizer, and rich and delicious. The other items were the WFC bowl (pictured) which had pork belly, rice, eggs, and a lovely sauce. We didn't wait too long before we were directed to a table. The drinks were excellent! Both of the drinks we had were sweet and delicious. The dope juice was amazing. The food was okay and I felt that it was a little bland. We liked the charred brussels sprouts and I liked our bread pudding. Service at first was nice and somewhat fast since there were only a few other people dining in at the time. However, near the middle to end of our meal, service became very slow and a little rude. Food took a very long time, which was understandable since there was only one chef. My suggestion: order everything first. We waited to order dessert near the end of our meal and waited for a very long time to receive it. I asked for a box when I paid, which they seemed to forget about, and I tried to get their attention again but that was a struggle. At this point, my partner was a bit fed up with all of the waiting and bad service we received and had left to pull our car up to the front. When I finally succeeded in getting their attention, I was asked a little rudely if I had paid yet. I recently visited Water for Chocolate in Baltimore, MD, and had a very disappointing experience. I asked for medium-rare on my ribeye and received a medium-well to well-done steak. Our server was arrogant and had a careless attitude. He didn't come back with a resolution about the steak until my friend inquired. When he finally did, he asked me what I wanted to do about it, which showed a lack of care from the chef as well. They removed the steak from the bill, but I ended up without an entrée for my brunch. The management and customer service were poor. We repeatedly had to request water refills, and when the bill came, our friend's dish was overcharged by $5. When we brought this to our server's attention, he deflected by saying he doesn't make decisions and is just a messenger. We didn't need him to decide anything, just to inform the chef about the overcharge. I had brunch reservations to visit Water for Chocolate with some friends last Sunday. It was all our first time dining here. Our reservations were at 2pm, the restaurant was to close at 3pm, however the food and wait staff were super patient with us. They had a great selection of appetizers and small plates which most of us started with. I also ordered the WFH flight which was my absolute favorite ever. All three drinks were delicious and refreshing, but the sangria was my absolute fav. The sangria was very well made and came with a sprig or two of rosemary, a few blueberries at the bottom and what tasted like a light sprinkle of cinnamon. It was so good! Definitely a drink that I plan to replicate for holidays, or really anytime. Personally, I enjoyed the chicken dumplings. The dumplings were flavorful and were topped with corn and red pepper. The presentation was also over the top! My entree was the Salmon Belly Tacos which was pretty good. The salmon was cooked perfectly and were wedged between corn tortillas and sitting on top of something that reminded me of an avocado and cilantro salsa of some sort. I was a bit underwhelmed, but definitely saw and tried some good eats from what my friends ordered. My untraditional Caesar with kale was good. I don't like olives so I didn't eat them but I liked the salad overall. My friends also ordered the bbq shrimp with Parmesan grits. I didn't taste that meal but they both really liked it. They enjoyed the shrimp and the flavor. The Brussels were really good. We all ate those and would definitely order them again! It's been a long time since I've eaten at this restaurant, but a friend suggested meeting here for lunch this past Saturday and I agreed. I arrived and gave my friend's name to whoever greeted me when I walked in. I was shortly seated at a table and provided lovely looking water (I believe it had lemon and mint - or possible basil in it, but plain water would have been just fine). While I waited for my friend to arrive, I scanned the QR code to check out the menu. My friend arrived and I directed him to scan the QR code. We each reviewed the menu and decided what we wanted to order, then waited for a waiter to arrive...and waited and waited and waited. Several waiters came and went from the next table, but didn't approach us. Finally my friend asked a passing waiter how we could order, and the waiter returned shortly with a pad. I ordered the coffee and the salmon tacos which came with the WFC salad (no description given). My friend ordered the crab quesadillas - I didn't taste them, so I can't offer a review of those. The coffee was cold press as that's all that they had to offer. I would not get that next time. The salmon tacos were ok, but a little uninspired and the salad was a distraction with a ton of craisins and nuts, plus goat cheese which I hate. My boyfriend and I booked their signature Experience for our anniversary and it was more amazing than I imagined. The service was incredible and our server was incredibly friendly, funny, and happy to answer all our questions. Now to the experience! It's a multi-course prix fixe menu with add-ons along the way. The space is intimate and you can watch the chef cook your courses as they come out, which is such a special experience you don't often get at restaurants. Each dish, wave after wave, was incredible, and I loved how customizable the menu was. Each course had multiple options and there was so much variety, from veggies to meats to sides to drinks. My husband and I came here for the first time today for brunch. I am assuming that someone called off work today because there was literally only the chef and one waitress working. The waitress appeared to also be the hostess and Sous chef as we saw her putting finishing touches on a plate. This kinda bothered me because she is also handling dirty dishes and I am not sure how diligent she was with handwashing as she was clearly overwhelmed. Servers must be aware of food safety and hygiene practices when handling food and tableware. We were seated and given water. The waitress came back 15-20 mins later to take our order. I wanted the Salmon belly tacos but they were sold out. I ordered the french toast dippers and crab quesadilla and communicated that we wanted both to come out first as the appetizers. My husband ordered the Shrimp and Grits. The waitress walked away to put our orders in but we hadn't been given an opportunity to tell her our drink orders yet. We tried to be patient as we recognized that she was doing the best with the difficult situation she was put in. 20-25 mins later, we caught her again and finally ordered our cocktails; which she seemed surprised herself that we had not done so already. She communicated that our food would be ready shortly. 10 minutes later, she brought out the crab quesadillas and my husband's shrimp and grits. I asked her what happened because I wanted the french toast dippers and crab quesadillas as an app to come out before his entree. She shared that the chef burned the first French toast and was remaking it now. My husband asked for an order of the Parmesan spinach dip. I am born and raised in Baltimore so you KNOW we are crab officianados. I took one bite of the quesadilla and knew something was off. I open it and noticed that at least 3 of the 4 quesadillas had "dark grey to black" colored crabmeat. I just had crabs last night with the most juicy, white crab meat so I know that's not right. It is either bad or from a can or something. Either way, it was inedible. My husband ate the shrimp and grits because he was so hungry but the grits were so thick like how they get when they are cold and have been sitting for a while; not nice and creamy like most restaurants. The spinach dip came with toast rounds and it was ice cold!!! Unbelievable. I sent both the crab quesadillas and spinach dip back. The French toast dippers finally came out and were delicious...at first. Towards the end of me feasting on French toast, there were about 2 sticks left and (I am not sure if it was in the sauce or in the granola) I bite into a stick and there was an overwhelmingly offensive flavor. I am not sure if it was star anisse or what but it was nasty black licorice and lavender like taste all of a sudden; truly indescribable. This horrible flavor overpowered the entire dish. I had to drink all of my delicious guava bellini to get that disgusting flavor off my tongue. I gave the rest of the stick to my husband and he dipped in the sauce and immediately had to spit it out. He was like, yuck what is that flavor? Who knows? I am not sure if something from another dish was added in error but there is no way any chef would have added that spice/flavor to french toast intentionally. We were so OVER it that we didn't even complain any more. We know for sure that this was our first and absolute LAST time dining here. I felt bad for the waitreas so I still tipped her 15% but was tempted to not tip at all. I am not sure if today was an extremely off day but it was a horrible experience for us. We immediately left and went to one of our usual faves: Guilford Brewing company. We ordered a whole new meal and was extremely satisfied. Where do I even start?! Water for Chocolate was fantastic. I love that you are encouraged to make dinner reservations as it's small inside and don't need everyone to be on top of each other. We were seated by our very nice and cool server. I mentioned the dope juice and my s.o. mentioned it too, so she suggested we split a carafe. Great decision all around because it is delicious sangria they make. We did the four courses and you each get to choose one thing from each section. For appetizers we did the Nitro Shrimp and the Quail and Bammy (I think). The quail was on top of a cassava patty with figs and a nice glaze. The shrimp was on top of parmesan grits. For greens, he did the brussel sprouts and I did the roasted okra. My okra was amazing and he loved the sprouts. Entrée time was the Blue Plate Special for me and that was lobster tail, shrimp, scallops, and salmon jambalaya. He did the chef's cut and it was a 10 Oz ribeye for the evening. Both were very flavorful and tasty. I think mine had a tiny bit too much zest. Lastly, dessert. He got the sweet potato bread pudding and was in love. I had high hopes for Water for Chocolate, but left the restaurant disappointed and hot (it must have been 80 degrees inside the restaurant, forcing us to sweat through our entire meal). We made a reservation for our party of five, (non-refundable fee, $60 per person, even with 24 hours notice). Our first clue should have been the near-empty restaurant on a Friday night. The prefixed, four course menu had a few good items, but many of the dishes were average or unavailable. If you order a steak, be prepared to have no choice on whether you want it rare, medium or well done. When it came time for dessert, our server informed us that the the WFC brownie was the most popular dessert item on the menu, so we ordered it. Then we were informed that it was too hot to fire up the oven, therefore, the brownie was not available. Next choice, creme brulee. Five minutes later, the server came back and informed us that the creme brulee was not unavailable. I ordered a ricotta dish sprinkled with pistachios, blueberries and honey. It tasted like a glob of cheese with no flavor. As soon as we left the completely empty restaurant at around 8:30 (it's supposed to close at 9), they immediately closed the door, hit lock, and hung the "closed" sign. If you decide to try this restaurant, I recommend going when you are not bound by a prefixed menu. FYI, I learned, after the fact, that Water for Chocolate was sited for several code violations in March (see attached image). read more

I haven't been to Water for Chocolate in YEARS, but I was so happy to see that the food and service was still amazing. I got the hungover special (which is goat mac and cheese, bacon, eggs, and cornbread) and it was so delicious. I took my cousin here for her birthday! We were super excited to try this place out. Parking is VERY hard to come by. It is located right at the corner and is small on the inside. I appreciated that the waitress made my cousin feel special for her birthday. The menu was limited and very hard to choose from especially for those who are picky eaters. The waitress did warn us that the chef does not sub out or make adjustments to the meals. Everything is as is. I ordered the French toast and the grilled octopus and scallops meal. The octopus and scallops were grilled nicely. The French toast did not taste that good to me. If they had maple syrup, honey or some type of syrup, that would have worked out so much better then the sauce that was on it. My cousin had the jerk duck and loved it.
