If heaven has a kitchen, I imagine this is what it would smell like. This is an upscale twist on southern cooking and boy did it not disappoint. Everything we had hit the spot perfectly and you can taste the love and care they put into their food. I wasn't sure what to expect with the different flavors but they complimented each other so well. If I wasn't so full I would have ordered more and this place is at the top of my list for places to eat. The staff was so polite, they gave their recommendations, and was quick to a table if you needed anything. The chefs were hard at it in the kitchen and I was drooling at everything they we're making. How have I lived in Baltimore for almost 9 years and never been here?! A friend and I went to lunch on a Friday and even though we didn't have a reservation, we were able to sit down right away. The man who waited on us was also the executive chef and he couldn't have been nicer! Because of Covid, you scan the barcode to see the menu. We started with drinks - blood orange Prosecco and a mimosa, mine was delicious. I got the croissant with lox, capers, avocado, arugula and tomato. It was quite large and really tasty! I have been to Water for Chocolate countless times over the years. It remains one of my favorite restaurants in town despite the rough edges on my last visit. The dope juice, their house sangria, is as refreshing--and potent--as ever though it used to come with a sprig of rosemary and assorted berries but now it's just a couple of blueberries. I'll blame inflation. The food was mostly amazing. I had the bison quesadilla which was light and multifaceted. The brussel sprouts were well seasoned but too soggy for my tastes. (Crispy brussel sprouts for life!) The sweet potato bread pudding was as sensational as ever and possibly the highlight of the meal. On to the bad: the service was slow. I mean glacial. We experienced several moments where we were looking for our wait staff but they were nowhere to be found. Hopefully the service was just having an off day. Otherwise, better take folks you enjoy talking to. 8.5/10 read more

Okay, off the bat: my experience was 3 stars but everyone else at the table had closer to a 5 star experience, so I feel like 4 is a good working number! COVID - Their COVID set up featured a limited reservation, prix-fixe Chef's Table menu (only two parties allowed in the restaurant at a time, and you're on opposite sides - this was back in November when indoor dining was still allowed). As soon as you walk in, the waitress offers you hand sanitizer (which she dispenses), so I felt very safe dining here right off the bat. They maintained that same level of vigilance throughout our meal. MENU - The first thing we noted is, for such an expensive prix-fixe menu, just shy of half of the menu included upcharges, which was kind of a bummer. BUT for the first time in my entire dining lifetime, this prix-fixe menu gave regular-meal portions, not some kind of small-plates-skimp! I have NEVER walked away from a pre-fixe meal with a take-home box, yet we were all so full, we had to have ALL of our desserts - and even a few bites of dinner - wrapped up to go. That, frankly, was pretty epic. FOOD - There were four of us, and it's a limited menu, so between us all we tried a substantial percentage of it. We were tied between the nitro shrimp and the chicken dumplings for the winning app of the night (also ordered the poutine and elotes - the elotes beat out the poutine). All offered soup/salad options were good but not anything extraordinary. And the desserts were good, too (I believe the bun n' cheese won out for that). For the entrees, we ordered the blackened mahi-mahi (one per the menu and one without the spice rub - more on that later), the chipotle maple salmon, and the charred octopus+scallops. The charred octopus+scallops over Parmesan grits were AMAZING. This is ABSOLUTELY worth going back for - the seafood (which I would not usually order myself) was incredibly delicious and the grits were out of this world. Definitely worth the $5 upcharge!! For sure the winning entree of the night!! The cauliflower rice that came with the mahi-mahi also hit it out of the park: cauliflower, spinach, and cranberries as its base, I could have eaten a whole bowl of it! (And was happy there was such a generous portion/bed of it with my fish!) ISSUE - All in all, super positive experience. Great food, hearty meal. Here was the glaring issue for me, though: the chef liked to crank up the heat unexpectedly in his dishes. There's no clear indication for this in the restaurant itself ("Water for Chocolate??"), including on the menu, that almost every. single. dish. will. be. spicy. I hit a couple of hot peppers in the poutine that put me pretty much at my heat threshold and I couldn't eat more than two or three sips of my crab soup. I don't have a high spice-threshold, but neither of these are dishes are traditionally spicy, so this came as a pretty negative surprise. After going back and forth with the waitress about what entrees I could order that were NOT spicy (there were only three or maybe four, I think, from the whole list), I ended with the mahi, sans jerk seasoning. But it was pretty bad...I don't even think the chef added S&P to it, plus it was overcooked. My friend, who also got the mahi (with spice), said that his was also just alright and even kind of bland. However, its cauliflower rice bed was a huge hit! This would have easily been a 5 star review but (sub-par mahi aside) it really bummed me out that I couldn't eat half of my food because of the secret-spiciness. The waitress was nice but clearly new and not attentive enough to see I was having issues. It's an easy resolution, though, that starts and ends with better communication from the restaurant. I really wanted this to be a five star review, but it ended up being more like a 3.5. First, for context, I have been wanting to come here for a really long time! I've heard amazing things about their brunch and dinner menus, and I had tried to make a reservation a couple times a while ago but it was always full. So must be super popular! My parents were in town and I really wanted to bring them here, so I snagged a Saturday brunch reservation finally (at first it said no availability but when I randomly checked back a few minutes later there were a few time slots available). Our reservation was for 10:15 but we got there right when they opened at 10 and there was only one other group there so we were seated right away. And it's a good thing we had a reservation because it looked like they were turning away people who didn't. We ordered the challah bread French toast appetizer, the hungover special, the crab quesadilla, and the bbq pork belly. Overall, everything was pretty tasty! The French toast was great with the fresh fruit and the sauce that came with. For the hungover special, the goat cheese Mac was super yummy and had lots of bacon pieces. The cornbread was also reallly good, but my eggs were wayyy over cooked :( The crab quesadilla was probably my favorite thing we ordered, it was super crispy and absolutely stuffed with crab. For the bbq pork belly, the cucumber kimchi was really tasty and again, that cornbread, but the pork belly itself was super tough. As for the service--it was really slow. Now, I was super empathetic because I only saw one chef in the kitchen and one server who was also helping to put finishing touches on plates. But for the first 30-45 minutes we were there, it was really only us and one other group. It just seemed like there could be some improvement in either organization or efficiency or something. This was a treat! We went to grab brunch not knowing you needed a reservation. Since we couldn't get seated, we decided to grab some takeout. While inside, though we didn't get far, I noticed the decor which gave the restaurant so much character. You don't need to wait inside as there is a window outside for pick up orders. We got a range of things some of which are pictured. Everything was delicious but my husband especially loved the octopus. I am too afraid to try it but the scallops were well cooked. The pear was my least favorite but it wasn't because it was bad. I just didn't prefer the rate. Ive heard so much about this one that I was excited to finally get there. The menu is really for an acquired taste. The options are a special cuisine and you cannot alter them at all. Also the menu is limited. I like what I had but I was limited on options due to what I'm able to eat. The server was overall nice. The space itself is limited but is in a great place for the neighborhood. The only thing that really bothered me was paying the check. We had a party of 6 and we were unable to just pay for our meals. The only options were to pay with one card or only split it evenly, and I thought that was very strange and inconvenient. First time at Water for Chocolate to celebrate my daughter's birthday at her suggestion. What a great experience! The food was amazing and everyone said that they enjoyed EVERYTHING!! The only comment I have is that the chocolate brownie wasn't as moist as I liked it... which prevented me from giving 5 stars!!Service was good, however our orders were a little mixed up because we didn't know that the menus were numbered based on where we sat and we were sharing them. The bread texture was off.. too much granola, fruit, and not enough moisture. I Had to put extra moonshine crème on it. The scrambled eggs were good. Added the homemade ketchup (yes ! Ketchup belongs on eggs) which made them even better. Now, my favorite dish which will also be my go-to when I go back was the jerk duck confit. The chief's a talented man for this cornbread waffle dish. Boy oh boy did he get it right. They have this blueberry compote that compliments the waffle so well. Absolutely loved it !! .. But as much as I wanted that to be the taste of the day, it wasn't. The jerk duck took the cake. Simply perfect. Moist, smooth, tasty.. just perfect flavor. I need more. My friends were late so I was concerned I wouldn't be seated. However, the friendly gentleman who greeted me assured me it would be fine. When my friends arrived, we ordered the Dope Juice which was also delicious and refreshingly sneaky because we were giggly for sure. For the food, we had some mixed feelings but overall enjoyed it. One friend got the Polenta Pancakes seeking something with pancake flavor but was disappointed to find more a sweet potato flavor. The other friend got the French toast, Duck Fat Fingerlings and the Parmesan Grits. She thoroughly enjoyed her French toast, thought the potatoes were okay and didn't care much for the grits. Horrible Service at Water for Chocolate. Please DO NOT waste your money or ever patronize this establishment. First of all, the temperature inside was HOT and uncomfortable but we managed through it. Our dinner party reservation made for 6pm on 6/28/25, 8 ppl were offered a pre-fixed menu roughly at $100.00 per plate. We were asked to circle the items on the paper menu and return to the waiter. At 8pm, 2 hours later we asked for our entrees to be packed to go so we can make our concert. We paid our checks in advance as we patiently waited for our order. We finally received 7 of the 8 orders. We shared with the waiter that I didn't receive my meal. The chef approached our table visibly upset and began yelling that he made 8 plates and we kindly told him that I never received my order. We reminded him that he should speak with the wait staff. We circled our order on the paper menu so the error was on the wait staff. The chef (tall dark skin bald head man) began questioning his staff loudly creating a scene in the middle of the restaurant. We paid over $800.00 as a party, my husband and I personally paid $200.00 and I left with NO food. The chef refused to fix the order or offer a refund. The level of disrespect and unprofessionalism experienced today was unimaginable. I will call tomorrow and attempt to resolve this with the Manager/Owner. read more

Don't let the size of this place fool you, the food packs huge flavor! We ordered the shrimp and grits as well as the hangover plate which is eggs, Mac and cheese, bacon and the yummy jalapeño cornbread omg! The shrimp and grits had this amazing kick to it which just hits you in all the right places! The menu is very vast with great soul food options with a twist, salads and sandwiches as well. I saw how popular this place was and had to make reservations for almost 4 weeks out for a Sunday morning reservation. I would highly suggest making reservations as we did see them turn down people. We got there right when they opened (10 am) and we were seated immediately. The place is fairly small, and there is only one waitress. We got waters, and my husband ordered a coffee (French press meant to serve more than just 1 person). We also ordered food when we put in our orders for the coffee. We decided on the raisin breas French toast, the hungover special, the shrimp & grits, and a special (steak and eggs). We obviously over ordered to make that 1 month wait worth it. We originally wanted the charred octopus & scallops, but the octopus wasn't prepped/ready yet so we opted for the hangover special instead. The food came out and we dug in. The steak was extremely well seasoned which we were super happy about. I do wish they let us do over easy eggs instead of scrambled for that. Who doesn't like dipping their steak into egg yolk? The shrimp and grits were good, it came with a lot of shrimp. My husband love the sauce it came with. The hangover special was fine, the green salsa it came with was what really blew us away. It was super fresh and just brightened up everything. The raisin bread French toast was my favorite. The lime zest on top was perfect. The raisin bread itself was delicious, and all the fruit on top brought it together. I have a huge sweet tooth, and the French toast was my favorite. The other 3 plates came with a jalepno cornbread that were all extremely dry. We didn't really touch those. I will say, they don't skimp on the sauces here. You could probably dip the jalepeno bread in the sauces too. The service is so friendly and amazing here. The chefs are really nice too! They have their dessert menu avaliable at brunch too. Just had a pretty good lunch at Water For Chocolate in Baltimore The BBQ Shrimp & Grits were delicious! I didn't think I was going to like the BBQ sauce on my shrimp & grits but I'm glad I tried it because it was a perfect balance of sweet & savory. The restaurant didn't drown the food in the sauce, they put just the right amount of it on there. I walked in without a reservation. I didn't know they were reservation only. I literally looked on Yelp for the closest restaurant by Johns Hopkins while I wait for my aunt to leave the ER and I'm so glad I wasn't turned away. I've been aching to eat here since I arrived and I'm so glad I was able to get a table when my friend visited with his partner. We got a last-minute open table right at 5p when I messaged them with no hope they'd have a spot. This meal was absolutely incredible. Sure the flavors were good and things were cooked right. But I was most impressed that every dish had thoughtfully constructed contrasts in texture. Lots of places make food that tastes good. But this was a wholly pleasurable experience for every sense. For dessert, while my sweet potato bread pudding was divine, the one bite I had of my friend's crème brûlée will haunt me. Somehow Mr. Guy made lime and mango (I swear I tasted passion fruit) subtle. Not elusive, but seductive. Beckoning you forward. More, there were like 7 waves of distinct flavor, each shimmering away to be replaced by another even more mysterious and delightful than the last. I'm still trying to figure out what they were, but I know I want just one more taste. And the Lapsang Souchong mocktail is not to be missed. The server, whose name I can't look up on the website and I deeply apologize for not remembering, was a wonderful blessing at the end of a long week. Attentive, friendly, informative, gracious, warm. The food was DELICIOUS. I had the BBQ pork shrimp and grits. The flavors were bold and the grits were cooked to perfection. The sheik were a nice size and the pork bites were a good size. Booked this place for a dinner birthday and did the "chefs table" experience. It was a fixed 4 course meal and it really didn't disappoint. We got so much food and everything was delicious. My favorites was their jerk duck, chicken dumplings and catch of the day fish. For desert I had their brownie and my boyfriend got the bread pudding and both melted in your mouth. I went for brunch. I really enjoyed the sweet potato polenta. The nitro shrimp was good too; I just wish there were more than two shrimp to go with the grits. It just didn't feel nearly as worth it as the entree. Still, I received a very good amount of food, and I was very full and satisfied with my meal. What was disappointing was the nonexistent service. After I was seated, they told me to scan the QR code on the table to see the menu, and then they left me. It took a very long time for one of the two servers to finally ask me what I'd like to order, even though there were only six or so parties in the whole restaurant. After the food was delivered, they never once checked with me on how it tasted, and they never once refilled my water. It took forever for them to take the dishes back after I finished, and I waited so long to receive the check after they cleared the dishes, that I went up to them myself to ask to pay. read more

I loved this place. The food and service was nothing short of amazing. One issue (that is going to be corrected within the first month of 2019) is that the place is TINY. Think of the smallest room in your home. Now cut that in half. That's how large the dining area is. Which means parties larger than six may be impossible. They're expanding in January and I'm sure the updates will be great. I went with a party of four on a rainy Sunday afternoon and it took about an hour before we were seated. There's no waiting area either. Surprise surprise. A couple of people waited outside in the rain. I refuse cause one, hair. Two, leather. Three, just no. I stood in the door way and didn't mind scooting over or a couple of excuse me as people passed by. You also have to cut through the kitchen to get to the bathroom. I would think that would pose a hazard as a customer could slip on something in the kitchen or a customer could be sick and cough all over the etoufee. Or what about those that don't wash their hands after using the restroom (yuck) and accidentally touch a kitchen item that a chef is using. Just a bunch of risks with that bathroom situation. Okay so all this negative when are you going to get to the good stuff that makes this place worth five stars. THE FOOD! The food was worth the wait, worth no adequate place to wait, worth the potential cross contamination (jk, nothing is worth that). I had the seafood jambalaya which comes with shrimp, scallops, chicken and sausage. My goodness. Who's grandma from Louisiana is back there cooking? I also had the jalapeño cornbread on the side which was great pair and not too spicy. The entree also comes with a salad which I opted out. My table and I also shared the French toast which is made with raisin bread. So friggin good. I can't wait to come back to this place. read more
