When I first saw the listing with the excellent reviews and history of the house I felt this would be a fun place to stay. After spending the four nights my initial feeling was right on. This was the perfect place for our family to stay. Kathy greeted us when we arrived and helped us figure out where to have dinner that first night. We stayed in rooms 10 and 11. Those rooms have their own private bath and are on the second floor. It was as though we had a family apartment. The adults room had a king sized bed and the children shared a queen. Their room had a scavenger hunt within the stone walls, which they really enjoyed. After dinner the boys played table tennis and pop shots basketball. Kathy also treated them to an ice cream cone. Very sweet. There were also plenty of board games to play in the evenings. Breakfast was yummy and coffee aplenty! They do offer WiFi, but no screens, so it is easy to bond with your family and have some quality time together. This location was within walking distance to the swimming pool/park and Pendarvis (which is still closed). It is about a half an hour drive to House on the Rock, Cave of the Mounds, and Taliesin. Lots of fun side stops on the way to any of these places. Kathy is an awesome cook. We feel so fortunate to have met her, Dan, and Bobby Jo on our trip. Mineral Point is a beautiful town and I thank them for preserving and sharing such a wonderful Wisconsin landmark with us.

The cottage was once a summer kitchen, and sits a stone's throw from the main house. Both buildings are of the same stonework style that Mineral Point is famous for. The cottage sports two bedrooms, a family room, and a small bath. The plumbing is all modern, with great water temp and pressure, as well as central air conditioning. There is a microwave, a small fridge, and a coffee machine. Several interesting books and knick-knacks line the shelves, and the main bedroom has a cute little shelf of chocolates. Out back is a little garden and beyond that is the Cabin at Cothren. Both have exclusive parking with direct access to the road. The reservation process was great. We booked online, then the owner (who is very pleasant and sociable) contacted us to arrange payment. She processed our credit card through Paypal. A very easy transaction. Our only comment is that we would have liked to have had a little history of this particular property in a printed form, but I'm certain our hostess would have been more than happy to tell us if we had asked. (I later discovered that there is some historical info on their website.) It should be noted that the whole town rolls up their sidewalks pretty early, so plan ahead if you want to eat out locally. The pancakes were super fluffy with this amazing cinnamon and citrus butter that took an already amazing pancake to a height I have rarely experienced. ..the next morning was the homemade cinnamon rolls. This is all made possible by two amazing inn keepers in Jim and John. They are funny, creative, awesome people whose number one goal is to make your stay incredible. They also have a barn with ducks, goats, and chickens. Meeting the animals is an experience in itself, but I have to let you experience some of the amazing things for yourself. Enjoy! The largest is called the Master Suite, and the others are named after the original owners daughters. We stayed in the "Eleanor" room, which is the smallest of the rooms. We came on Christmas Day and were the only people there. Rita, the innkeeper, was extremely pleasant, accommodating and helpful. She told us the history of the house, how she became the ninth owner and also helped us find the only restaurant open on Christmas within a 30 mile radius. She then gave us a gift of local wine and a tiny Christmas ornament. So great! Another thing I appreciated about this B&B is when I was looking up places in Galena, I noticed a rather disturbing trend of a lot of places having beautiful buildings, but then were either ridiculously expensive or else inside things got really hokey. Like with in room jacuzzi tubs or everything Super Girly with pink and lace exploding everywhere. Thanks for keeping it simple & elegant, Hellman, we are excited to come back again.

The second night featured an unforgettable seven-course candlelit dinner in the main house. Every dish was thoughtfully prepared, beautifully presented, and absolutely delicious. Our cottage had a very nice porch that we spent a good portion of the weekend relaxing on. The cottage also had a nice fireplace we took advantage of. The meals in particular were a highlight and exceeded expectations. The breakfasts served in our cottage were utterly phenomenal. Every morning was a delight. Each stay, they cook one dinner for guests. That meal also stood out to us as special. It held its own against many of the fine dining restaurants in Chicago.
