Save yourself a problem/trauma and don't go to Waterfront oral surgery. -Dr. Blathers arrived late. 1 hour later every time. -The tooth extraction surgery was extremely painful and suspicious, Ms. Blathers had strange behavior. She was like on drugs. -They made my husband wait outside the office which also seemed very strange to me, since they have a waiting area but they made him leave that zone too while I had the surgery. -They charged me a lot more and to this day they have not refunded my money. -The office is in very very poor condition. -They did not send my prescription to CVS on time and after the surgery I suffered excessively intense pain waiting for them to have it ready. They are scammers and the worst professionals, really don't go!! read more

I just retired and had to change my dental insurance so I was looking for an oral surgeon that accepts my Dominion National insurance. I was delighted to find that Waterfront Oral Surgery not only accepts Dominion National but also accepts Medicare patients. I got an appointment for a tooth extraction and found the staff to be very professional and pleasant. Dr. Blathers and her assistant were amazing and would recommend her to anyone looking for a personal touch. I had a great experience at Waterfront Oral Surgery. Do not go here. Dr. Blathers, while seemingly did a fine job on my extractions (which took less than 5 minutes), runs an EXTREMELY questionable practice in both judgement and billing. Like a previous commenter, I was never told of the "new patient fee" before arriving despite my questioning on the phone about the costs of the initial consultation. I was also told that she "needed" an extra x-ray despite the fact that I had both regular x-rays and a panoramic covered by insurance. I was told she would not put that extra x-ray through insurance (as is she were doing me a favor) and would only charge me $70 out of pocket instead. On the day of my surgery, I was supposed to have IV sedation. Dr. Blathers decided it would be too har for her to use the vein in my right arm and gave me a cocktail of pills that would "act the same" as the sedation instead. I was given Benadryl, Vicodin, and some kind of benzodiazepine. When she tried lowering the chair to start working after 10 minutes I said I was no where near ready yet (obviously oral drugs take much longer to kick in than an IV). She gave me more (what I believe was) Benadryl and the benzodiazepine. I was fully awake during the surgery. The drugs did not hit me until I was in CVS picking up the prescriptions she gave me because they had failed to call them in the day before. Moreover, the Tylenol with codeine that Dr. Blathers prescribed me had twice the amount of codeine in it than the prescription I was given when I had surgery on my hand. This is how people get addicted to drugs. You can understand my surprise when I see on my insurance explanation of benefits that Dr. Blathers charged a whopping $1350 for anesthesia that she never gave me. It's also worth noting that what my insurance company claims I owe is actually less than what I've paid to Dr. Blathers. Dr. Blathers and her team set you up with a follow up appointment before you go in for the surgery. Turns out, when you do not have stitches (which I did not) and when there are no issues, there is no reason togo in for a follow up. I called to ask if they charge for the follow up. Of course they do. Cancelled that immediately. Lastly, during both my consultation and my actual surgery, their air conditioning was broken. This is DC. In the summer. They were never up front that it was broken and did not address it unless I brought it up. It was hot enough to the point where during my surgery, Dr. Blathers felt the need to put ice packs on my body. All of this is so unacceptable and I'm so mad at myself for going through with a surgery at a place that felt wrong and like I was being swindled. Go somewhere else. read more

Unfortunately, I have to agree with Kaeren from Arlington. I was referred to Waterfront by my dentist in the same building for extractions. Prior to my appointment, I had to fill out a lengthy online profile with my insurance information. I signed up for a 9:30 appointment, the earliest you can see her. First-off, she was late. When I got there, I had to fill out more paperwork, including a lengthy financial statement and provided my insurance information ... again. During the appointment, Dr. Blathers gave me a full look up and down the entire time which made me feel extremely uncomfortable. And, although Dr. Tran provided her office with my x-rays before the appointment, they took more, which subsequently were not covered by my insurance. I was told I would get a treatment plan for the extractions - never received. When leaving, she processed my charge of $55, which should have been nothing as she was in-network, with no statement of what was performed or what the charges were for. When I called afterwards to question the $55, $35 is for an "administrative fee" for new patients. Really?! I have yet to receive the treatment plan and just got the statement from my insurance company. Of the $353 she billed to my insurance, $150 for a "consultation," only $55.00 was covered. I now need to find another oral surgeon for the infected tooth. As Kaeren said, she is just a money machine. I will be filing a complaint with the ADA. I guess she forgot to read my occupation is a paralegal. read more

Dr. Blathers was wonderful! I was happy to have completed the paperwork online ahead of time. The staff were very pleasant during my consultation, procedure, and during my follow-up. Dr. Blathers did a great job of preparing me for what to expect during the procedure and asssured me that I would be fine. She gave me an opportunity to ask questions and to express any concerns. During the procedure, Dr. Blathers and her staff made sure I was comfortable. Her assistant, Cassie, not sure if I spelled her name correctly but she checked in with me throughout the procedure to ensure my comfort level had not changed. Dr. Blathers and Cassie made sure the temperature was to my liking which I can appreciate since I tend to be cold. Having any dental procedure causes extreme anxiety for me but Dr. Blathers and her staff made me feel at ease. I really appreciate the professionalism, kindness, and care that I received at Waterfront Oral Surgery. I am healing up well and look forward to my next visit with Dr. Blathers and her staff! read more

(Based on a visit last year.) I had a wonderful experience with wisdom teeth removal here. Dr. Blathers and the rest of the staff were very friendly and knowledgeable. They explained everything thoroughly in advance, regarding risks and what to expect during and after the procedure. I trusted Dr. Blather's opinion before the surgery that I only get two, rather than all four wisdom teeth removed. They were able to schedule me in a tight timeframe and even coordinated directly with my regular dentist on some things I was getting done over there. The procedure itself was quick, painless and I had no complications. Despite being one of the last operations of the day, they were very patient and caring when I felt a little woozy after the procedure, having me relax there longer, getting me additional ice packs for my forehead, and offering to call my ride for me. They did provide follow-up calls and were again very patient and understanding when my insurance ended up covering a little less than expected for one tooth, and it took me a while to get around to calling them to provide payment info. The location may be somewhat odd (1st-floor retail space of a condo complex), but I'd definitely recommend them! read more

Dr. Blathers is a consummate professional. Having to get three wisdom teeth pulled, I approached the procedure "on edge." Dr. Blathers and her team found common ground with me and calmed my fears. They made me smile, laugh, and feel at ease. She EVEN allowed me to play the music of my choice as she was doing the procedure. If I felt a pinch or any pain, I'd squeeze her leg and she knew just what to do. During my healing process, she even availed herself on her cell phone in the evening because I wasn't sure I was taking the medicines correctly and asked her if the feeling in my jaw was normal. With a smile in her voice, she assured me I was okay...and I was. She and her staff even worked with my insurance company to ensure that everything was covered. She went above and beyond anything that I ever expected to ensure I didn't walk away destitute after trying to pay for the things that weren't covered. Although I'm glad I don't have any more wisdom teeth to pull, if I did, I would certainly go and see Dr. Blathers. I now consider her to be a part of my family. Anyone who can extract impacted wisdom teeth from a patient who is acting like a big baby and crying uncontrollably, CERTAINLY deserves kudos from me. I love Dr Blathers! She is not only a great oral surgeon, she is fun and personable. As other reviewers have said, you get the benefit of a small office with personalized attention. The office staff are very nice always been upfront and transparent about the costs. The billing is clear, fair and Dr Blather's prices are reasonable, especially for D.C. I debated whether or not to post a review, because I don't like "trashing" offices. But I honestly did NOT have a great experience with this office. I was referred to Waterfront Oral Surgery by my regular dentist to have my bottom wisdom teeth removed. Like others, I had some trouble with the billing practices at this office. To be honest, I got the overall impression that my wallet mattered more than my health. Firstly, I was required to pay for full Xrays (even though my regular dentist had taken and sent some the same day) and 3D Xrays for both my bottom wisdom teeth. This seemed excessive to me but despite my concerns, I was told I had to do it. Secondly, I was told I would receive a treatment plan after my initial consultation. It never came. I had to physically GO to the office and pick it up.... only to discover it was for the wrong teeth. So that had to be amended. Thirdly, after noticing a discrepancy between what I had paid and my "balance due," I requested a copy of my ledger. I wanted to see an itemized list of what I was being charged. You would've thought I had asked for the moon. I had extreme difficulty getting a copy of my ledger. I had to go in with my husband and essentially have HIM demand to see the full charges being billed to me and to my insurance. It was obvious that the staff didn't want to hand that over. To be frank, my insurance was billed far more than I really think was appropriate. For example, there were multiple "consultation" charges as well as "palliative treatment" charges for dates I didn't even visit the office. As it turns out, these charges were billed to my insurance to cover the dentist calling in my medicine. Three distinct charges for three medicines. Having worked in health care management, I know that this is not necessary at all. Essentially, the office just eating up my dental maximum and billing for every little thing they could. Additionally, there were these "administrative fees" and "surgery deposits" that really made no sense to me... especially since I still had to meet my deductible on top of that. Furthermore, on the day of surgery, the surgeon walked in to do surgery on the WRONG teeth -- according to that original incorrect treatment plan. I had to hastily correct her before being given nitrous oxide. While this wasn't a huge issue, it made me feel uncomfortable, like not much thought went into planning my surgery. Since I had two impacted wisdom teeth (that ended up resulting in paresthesia and complications afterward), this made me very nervous. HOWEVER, I will say that the surgeon did do a good job. She was kind and gentle during my surgery. Finally -- and this makes me the most upset -- I had complications after my surgery. Because of how badly impacted my teeth were, my mandibular nerve was traumatized (not the doctor's fault, FYI... sort of a freak thing) and I had lingering numbness for over two months. When I went in to have my follow-up, the surgeon explained that I would have to do followups to monitor the improvement. I was required to sign some form saying that I understood and take the surgeon's advice. (I think this document just protected her from malpractice lawsuits.) But I specifically asked if I would be billed for these followups. I was assured that "no I would not be." But guess what. I have three charges to my insurance for those visits, which literally consisted of me drawing lines on my own face and taking a photograph to illustrate the gradual reduction of numbness. So I was lied to that those followups were "routine follow up care" and "no cost." I will say that the staff and surgeon were polite and did a decent enough job actually extracting my teeth. However, I do feel like this office is a little dishonest when it comes to billing. They aren't forthcoming with how much they are billing you or your insurance. The way their system is set up, charges kind of "hide." And when you specifically ask, they do a lot of deflecting and explaining in circles. Since I used to do insurance billing, I know how to navigate those circles and can recognize shady practice when I see it. I ended up having to get my insurance to call over there and have the charges explained and have a few removed. It made me uncomfortable and feel like my wallet was more important than my actual health. So, all in all, I wouldn't recommend this oral surgeon. I just adore Dr. Blathers! I had a decaying lower wisdom tooth that was super painful and I had no insurance so I needed to pay out of pocket. I called around and I told the offices I did not have insurance and would be paying out of pocket so I needed an estimate of the cost and those offices told me they couldn't do that over the phone and that I would need to come in for a ​consultation first. However, Dr. Blathers' office had no problem giving me a quote for the surgery over the phone. I also had to bring my toddler with me since my husband was out of town at the time and the front desk staff was so kind and accommodating​. I couldn't imagine getting a surgical tooth extraction from ​any other oral surgeon, wit a ​ toddler in tow! Dr. Blathers had me in and out! I've had the same procedure done before and it took over an hour but Dr. Blathers had the tooth out in under 20 minutes. I literally was looking at her in disbelief like " you've​ got to be kidding me! that's​ it? You're done? no way" She made me feel so comfortable, relaxed and secure that I was in good hands. This is a practice I would NEVER recommend. They were congenial until they received the final payment for the surgery, then the mask was removed. Their billng practices are somewhat surreptious in that my c.c. was charged beyond my agreed upon amount. They promised to provide follow-up calls after surgery, but did not. Dr. Blathers is not reachable on her cell, although I called repeatedly and left messages. Lavonne, the business manager, seemed defensive when I questioned the itemized charges. I had a really great experience with Dr. Blathers and her team at Waterfront. I needed all 4 wisdom teeth removed ASAP because of a time crunch and 2 lower impacted, painful teeth. Lavonne was so kind and professional and booked me for a consultation the next day and surgery 2 days after! The procedure was so much easier than I thought (I was generally sedated with nitrous and IV) and recovery is going well. They did a great job thoroughly explaining the procedure and post op instructions with medication and a full packet of guidelines for healing. I called Dr. Blathers on her cell and left a message with a question after a couple of days and she got back to me in less than 10 minutes with a helpful response. I go in for my week after surgery exam tomorrow and am expecting good results. The only reason I didn't give five stars is because the location is strange and a little hard to locate (a suite on the ground floor of a condo building - parking is limited), but the office is clean, sleek, and comfortable. I really had a great experience for such an anxiety ridden procedure! Overall a personal, professional, polite, knowledgable staff and excellent results! read more

In stark contrast to the very isolated review--whose author MUST be a fiction writer--I cannot praise enough the professionalism, congeniality, knowledge and great outcomes of Dr. Blather's practice. And she gets rousing acknowledgement of these essentials from her professional colleagues as well, as I've learned when I've mentioned her name during visits to other dental practitioners (both general and endodontist dentistry). And my positive impressions were not just formed on a single visit--they have been bolstered anew at each of my many, many visits. As if that were not enough, Dr. Blathers is reasonably priced and she offered a very generous payment plan on top of that. Unbelievable as it may sound, I actually look forward to my visits. One more time to allow this to sink in: I look forward to visits to an ORAL SURGEON. I had never been able to even remotely say that for others in the field.
