I would like to say I've had worse meals, but I'm not sure that would be the truth. I'm convinced the restaurant is cursed. Lamb Rack: I personally ordered lamb, assuming the regular rare to medium rare that lamb comes standard. I was asked what side, and chose mashed potatoes because they're just about the safest side to order. I was asked if gravy is okay after ordering the mashed potatoes and I replied with a later-regretful "yes." When the food arrived, I was a bit surprised to see my "lamb rack" a harsh well-done, lazily placed around the mashed potatoes, ALL DRENCHED in gravy. To have gravy on lamb is one thing, but to drench LAMB in BEEF gravy is in a completely different ballpark of wrong. I hesitantly took a bite of the first lamb-lollipop and suddenly thought it was a bad dream as I was hit with the lamb-flavored sawdust. I pinched myself, but alas, the sawdust lamb was all too real. After 45 minutes of waiting for my plate, I could do nothing but scrape the gravy off and eat the lamb that crumbled when I took a bite. Word of advice: trust your sister when she tells you to get the ribs. Crab Cakes: Coming with a side of hush-puppies is nice, but the hush puppies were surprisingly dry. They tasted fine, but needed a bit of a textural change (spongy inside with a crunchy exterior). The crab cakes were more of crab-pancakes, being around 2cm thick at most, with the first comment from my grandmother being "there's carrots in here..." Not a good sign. She finished the crab cakes and my mother asked "Were the crab cakes good, mom?" "No, not really." she replied with a laugh. Waterloo "Great" Steak: An 8 oz sirloin provided to my younger sister with a side of fries. Her first comment was that the fries were soggy, so I took it upon myself to delve deeper and try one - Soggy was an understatement. Onto the steak: A tough, but decently seasoned sirloin steak. There was quite a bit of grissle as well, which is wonderful if you like flavorless fat and tissue. I felt like I was eating raccoon as my sister allowed me a bite of the steak. All in all, not the worst I've had, but close to it. "Bourbon" Salmon with Roasted Brussel Sprouts: My mother was between the Salmon and the Fried fish. She decided on the salmon because of the Brussel sprouts. For starters, the salmon tasted like a teriyaki wing, but tougher and dryer. Enter Sawdust™. The top of the salmon was crispy and dry, with the middle being dry as well. The bottom was also dry. The whole fish was probably dry. It must have been a desert salmon. Now the Brussel Sprouts: they looked and tasted oddly similar to green beans. As a major selling point for a dish, it would have been nice to actually receive the sprouts. It's almost as if they assumed we wouldn't notice because they were still green. Overall, ridiculous. Lobster & White Cheddar Mac and Cheese: Actually tasted pretty good. It had a strong lobster flavor, which to me is a plus. The main issue with the dish is that there was zero white cheddar. The dish was highlighter orange, with zero white cheddar either in the taste or in sight. We later mentioned to the manager that there was no white cheddar, to which she replied that they use a five-cheese blend for the sauce and then add white cheddar on top. It's interesting because there was no white cheddar on top either. It wasn't Kraft, but it was like the better tasting cousin. All-around the best dish at the table. The Cream Puff as big as your head: 86, sold out, no more, or any other way of saying they didn't have any left. I'm almost glad, though. I was afraid they would run out of whipped cream and substitute whipped butter or run out of hot fudge and substitute hot beef gravy. The redeeming factor of the meal was a very kind waitress. She was attentive and came to our table to update us on the status of our meal along the process, unlike many servers who will wait until the food is ready in fear of being yelled at by rude customers. The restaurant is lucky she gave such good service or else it would be a one. Conclusion: If you choose to eat at The Waterloo, don't. read more

We hired Waterloo Restaurant and Catering for my daughter's wedding and they were fantastic!! Chef John and his entire crew were superb throughout the entire time, the food was fantastic, the service was wonderful and the price was great as well. The wedding was off site at Hale Farm and they knew exactly what needed to be done and when it needed to be done. You can't go wrong with Waterloo! read more

The menu is one sheet of paper with large print listing vague meal titles. The menu states that each meal comes with a side dish, a salad and bread. I ordered chicken parmesan and my kids ordered chicken alfredo. We each ordered our salad and side with a drink. The meal was not very tasty at all. The alfredo was watery and bland. When I received the check I was charged extra for our sides. The waitress was no where to be found. When I went to the cashier she acted like i was an idiot. She not only tried to tell me that the noodles in the dishes WAS the side. She started naming other restaurants who serve noodles as their sides. Rather than continue the stupidity of the conversation I cut her off and told her it was not open for negotiation. Their menu was vague and noodles were not even listed with the chicken parmesan on the menu. She snarled at me and told me "well you got it removed THIS TIME". I bit my lip and signed my receipt. Been going to this restaurant for my entire life (45 years) and it has gone downhill. Got French onion soup that tasted like hot water and oil. Not good. No dessert menu any more and waitress said they didn't know about desserts they have had for years. Every time I have been in there it seems like all the employees are brand new. We hav had a very disappointing experience at the Waterloo today. We called on Christmas Eve to insure they would be open Christmas Day and were assured it would be business as usual. We called on Christmas morning and were told the same. We called later in the day to place our order with no answer. We thought they may have been too busy to answer so we drove out. When we got there, they were closed with not even a sign on the door with an explanation. Because of this, a 93 year old man didn't get a Christmas dinner. read more

I have been going to the Waterloo since I was a kid, so part of me eats there out of nostalgia. But the other part of me really just loves their food. When they get a dish right, they get it really, really right. Their comfort food is amazing. I love the creamed chicken with biscuits and mashed potatoes, and their pierogi are covered in onions and are just delicious. Their salads are good, although a bit oversized. I love their hummus. My biggest issue with this place is that no matter what day or time I go, my food is never hot. It's not a busy place, so i'm not sure what it is about the wait staff that makes it impossible for them to serve the food once it is up, hot and ready. Maybe it's because they're almost always clustered in a corner, talking? Desserts here are fabulous. I'd just recommend skipping the food and going directly to the cream puff and a cup of coffee. read more

This place is just all around old. From the music being on an 80's channel to the decor to style of furnishings to the attitude of the server to the food, etc. The service wasn't bad although he did forget a few things, but it is like he bases how to act as a server based on some old movies. He was unintentionally amusing. They list their sauerkraut balls as "the best in the city". I wouldn't call them horrible, but they certainly weren't good by any means, and I've never had any this bad. The rest of the food was manageable, just so old fashioned in what it is. It's like going to a Bob Evans from maybe 30 years ago. I think maybe this place had something good going on many years ago, and the people managing it have decided to change absolutely nothing since then. This visit was superior to our last. They had a strip steak special that came with salad and choice of potato. I chose baked. My wife got the broiled scrod. It was a surprisingly large portion of fish which she got with mashed potatoes and broccoli. The salad was nice, and had more than just the bag-o-lettuce red cabbage and carrot shards with iceberg lettuce, but I can't recall the exact components. The steak was good and correctly cooked, and the wife could not say enough about the scrod. Her broccoli was good and both potatoes were fine, as was the service. The toughest part of coming here is walking past their phenomenal dessert display. We showed up at 5pm on Mother's Day and the doors were locked (they closed early for some reason) but they let us in anyway and said they would seat us and take care of us. They were very nice about the whole thing. The waitress that took care of us was fantastic. I'd hire her in a heartbeat. The food was good too even though the kitchen had probably already closed. And oh what a battle it was.... Took my boyfriend here on New Year's Day on the search for something a) open b) greasy c) on the way to meet the family I was here once as a kid and my mom talks about it with much disdain because my father apparently forced her to eat here when they were married, but I digress. Anyways, my boyfriend ordered a double cheeseburger (to the gym he went on Monday) and I got a bison burger with feta and sweet potato fries. I am on a huge feta kick and sweet potato fries are quickly edging out other greasy foods as a favorite, so I was delighted to see both on the menu. Food arrived quickly and looked great, oh and the place was decked out for Christmas. That annoyed my boyfriend who believes that the holiday is over December 26 at midnight, but I was still loving it. Burgers and fries were around $8. Oh and they serve breakfast all day and I love that. About a quarter through my burger I discovered something unsavory, a hair that was not mine. YIKES. But the burger was so delicious I contemplated just taking it out. I quickly realized that was far too disgusting and sent it back. Now this would ruin many people's appetite, but not mine. Despite the hair, this was the best burger I'd had in awhile so I ordered the EXACT same thing. The waitress was a bit taken aback and very apologetic, but hey, it happens. Burger number 2 came out shortly after and again, it was great. I'd go back again if all 3 circumstances came into play, and maybe just for a good bison burger. 3 stars with a hair? Worst service ever! I was at the restaurant this past Saturday for lunch. Not very busy inside. Put our order in and 1/2 an hour later still sitting there. Our waitress never once came to check on us or offer me even one refill on my coffee. I finally flagged her down for more coffee. Another 15 minutes went by still no food or even a coffee refill. Other people that had ordered after us were getting their food. Still no waitress checking on us. I finally flagged down another waitress who went to check on our order. Apparently the ticket got lost or my guess is the waitress forgot to enter it. Our waitress never checked on the progress of our order or she would have caught this. The manager never came out to apologize. Instead the waitress came back with our check and a 6.00 discount. Yippee. Luckily the waitress station was nearby, because I had to get my own to-go containers. The food was mediocre at best. Save yourself some aggravation, choose another restaurant. read more

I love the atmosphere of this place. Everything looks like it was picked by the most savvy Pinterest person in the world. Not a fan of the store up front though, it's kind of weird to go in a restaurant and see jewelry and shawls for sale. The food was amazing though! I got the fish and chips. Fresh bread here is AWESOME. Hot and delicious, the tiniest crust and pillowy inside. This is not a high dining experience because you have to know what is actually good on the menu compared to what is average. It takes a few tries but it's a comforting taste to me. We ordered the Bison Burger and Chicken parmesan. Neither had any flavor, it tasted like they just took it out of the freezer. We had a bite of each plate and left it. Horrible service the waiter I think was freaking high!! Who the hell tells a customer they died smoking vapor???? And just standing there to see how much tip we are leaving you? For starters, consistently good, fresh, hot coffee is a necessary amenity at any restaurant I frequent. The Waterloo's coffee meets each of those requirements. The atmosphere and the staff are equally welcoming. It has the feeling of being one large family, especially if you eat there very often. And thyme entire restaurant is very clean. The seating areas offer a generous amount of space, and the ambient noise is relatively minimal - unless you choose to visit during peak hours. Even still, my guests and I ate another to hear each other with ease. The homemade croutons, fresh-from-the-oven, piping hot bread, sweet potatoes, and house dressing are some of my favorite food items, as well as the scrod, Chopped and Waterloo Salads, and a 10 oz. Sirloin. The Waterloo offers a nice selection of family special and soups. French Onion anyone? The portions are generous, and breakfast is offered all day. Whatever you choose to eat, be sure to save room and time for the Waterloo's LEGENDARY desserts and for a moment or two to browse their reasonably priced gift shop. Server was very pleasant and just attentive enough to our boisterous group. It's a very dark wood restaurant, but has a wide variety of choices. I remember the days of John Bahas deep dish apple pie. I will admit that this place probably will never do as good now that they don't have the benefit of the late great Howie Chizek to advertise for them on the radio. He could practically make your mouth water describing the menu items of the day. I only come here now and then so my elderly mother can have pecan pie. This restaurant only appeals to old people whose taste buds have long since withered away. I'm 60 and I'm not old enough yet to think the food is good. My mom, sister, and I visited yesterday. My mom's sausage and hash browns were nothing but grease. My belgian waffle was room temperature and served with syrup from a fridge, and the ham was a yucky government surplus type. The service is always pleasant but very slow. The food takes a really long time to come out. If it weren't for my mom and her pecan pie, I would never come here. EVER. read more

This place used to be much better! I refuse to go there now for any meal other than breakfast. Slow service and unedible food have been the pattern for quite awhile now. For example,last summer I ordered a salad with grilled chicken on it. Pieces of the chicken were raw and I wasn't even offered a comp. My husband has also had food so salty it was almost unedible. He couldn't send it back because he didn't want to wait another 45 minutes. The breakfast however seems to run much smoother. Food and service is better. This resturant was advertised on my favorite talk radio station in Akron. My lady friend and I were looking for a local establishment to dine out. I remember passing this place many times with a curious eye. Moment we walked through the door it seemed dated. There was a cheap jewelry counter up front. Main dining room was dated with darkwood decor, depressing actually.The staff was quiet and unattentive went with the decor. Our sever she was engaging,we explained it was our first time there. Ordered the NY cut steak.Came with potato and fresh loaf bread, no other side's. Our order was messed up an didn't get cooked. We were sat for well over a hour before the waitress came and acknowledged this to us. Waitress was apologetic enough but the fact everyone who came in after us got served, should of been a blues clue. When our steaks did arrive they weren't cooked to order rare mostly. What could of been forgiven if only the main course would have been over the top, siszled to a obviously bad experience. I was disappointed that we wasted our evening out with this place. I've been here a few times. It's just a regular neighborhood restaurant. It's good to eat, I can't rant about it, but I can say that I would go back. I have had one bad experience there, and they did try to right the wrong. They do have a very good breakfast skillet if you eat pork and their fish fry Fridays are really good. Would NOT recommend. My husband and I threw a 60th birthday party for his mom. We called Waterloo catering and spoke with the catering associates. Apparently he didn't know much about the catering, so he gave us incorrect information. He told us to call the following day to speak with the catering manager Terri. The next day, my husband called to speak with Terri; who was very rude. My husband was just letting her know what he wanted for the party and she kept saying with extreme attitude, :We can't do that". It's not my husbands fault that he was misinformed by one of their associates. Terri stated that she had to contact the GM to approve the menu that my husband selected. Perhaps Terri needs additional customer service training. We would have normally just went with another caterer, but everyone that we were interested in using was booked. The GM went ahead and approved the menu that we selected and we placed the order. Fast forward to the day of the party, September 8th, 2018. The food was supposed to arrive at 7pm , but they did not arrive until 7:20. My husband had to call to get an update on where the driver was. We understand that things do come up, but they could have let us know. I feel like they are so unprofessional and I will never use them again. read more

Good neighborhood restaurant with solid food at good price. They serve standard breakfast, lunch & dinner food. They have big room for large groups. The do have a big pie selection and very large desserts. The Long John Shake is so tall you have to stand to drink it. A lot of fun for the kids. Visited this establishment twice! First time was 9/24/2017 a Sunday morning Service was very uneven as we had 3 different waitresses come to our table. Food was average at best after a lengthy wait of about 40 minutes. Suspected this was due to being fairly busy. Decided to try this place again on 10/20/2017. Service was horrible! We were never offered refills on tea or coffee. There might have been 20 customers in the building. Food was cold, NEED I SAY MORE! When we checked out we were charged $46.30 for a $16.30 ticket. Then we had to call and return to this JOINT to finally get our refund 5 Days later...NEVER AGAIN WILL WE GO HERE!!!! read more

One of my in-laws swears by this place although judging by the awards [including one from Del from Channel 3, I forgot about that guy... and yellow newspaper clippings on one of the walls], this place is a bit past by its prime. This mom and pop is a slight step up from a greasy spoon (and the rest of the places in my mom and pop list) in ambiance. The walls are of dark wood are accented by brick, and carpet. No TVs and a quiet atmosphere. Menu-wise, it's an assortment of deli sandwiches [hot and cold], a few pasta dishes, a couple steaks, 4-5 fish options, salads, and a couple signature dishes like Barberton Chicken. I opted for the chili to start out with. It tasted exactly like my mom's: but that's not a compliment. Chunks of ground beef, red beans, diced tomatoes, in a bland sauce. It's filling and doesn't have a bad taste to it, because it doesn't have much taste to it. If you're looking for a chili with any spice or kick, pass. The Waterloo Dip, a hot roast beef ($10 with choice of green pepper, onion, and mushroom, or 75 cents each for an additional one) on a bun made me appreciate Bogtrotters Doorstep's sandwich a lot more. The au jus was lukewarm and had the taste of MSG (extremely salty). Also on the side was a yellow mustard with a hint of mild horseradish, pleasant surprise (as I think about it, I think it came with someone else's meal at the table). The service was very good. With a table of 10 including a couple kids, our server was tested but all of our orders were expo'd precisely as ordered [we had a few substitutes] and we had prompt refills, often without asking. Overall, it's okay. Not my favorite type of place to go (and I'm biased when reviewing these places), the food was comperable to other mom-and-pop style restaurants, this had a quieter atmosphere. read more
