BRING ON THE SUPER EL NINO!…read more Joel and Sons recently completed a much overdue project at our home. For years, our outside drains were clogged, and I found myself setting up pumps during the storms to get the pools of water away from our home. Every year, I would tell myself that I would get the drains cleared. Before the rains came this past winter, I hired a company to hydro jet the pipes. They tried to clear the drains, but because they were so clogged, their equipment failed. Again, I was setting up the pumps during the rain storm. So, I researched and found Joel and Sons. I met Joel and he examined our front/back yards. He gave an excellent and fair estimate that would fix the drainage problems. Before the job even began, he ran through several scenarios with me and was very patient. He understood my objectives both as they related to aesthetics and my pocketbook. In the end, we came up with a plan that was viable and as aesthetically pleasing as could be managed given the situation. Once the job began, the primary person of contact shifted to Julio, one of their project managers. He was on property every day supervising and working alongside his crew. The crew was very polite, hard-working and friendly. They were very well supported by Julio. This may seem like a given, but often it is not so it did stand out to me. Once all of the work was done, Julio gave me a final walk-through, showing me how the various components function and made certain that I did not have any lingering questions. I think there were two follow up visits after the work was completed in order to accomplish this. There was no point along the way where I felt like they were taking shortcuts, using materials that were inferior quality, or anything of that nature. Their concrete cuts were incredible, and I have seen some really bad cuts in my past. And they did a beautiful job with brick work, including redesigning some curved areas of brick that needed to be removed during the job. Veronica in the office was very helpful as well. We initially got started with them for a total clear out and clean up of our existing landscape and ended up sticking with them for weekly maintenance services and little projects here and there and have never looked back! Today was another example - I asked Steve if he would just check up on my back sprinklers bc I noticed they didn't run Monday and when he did, he found a HUGE leak in one of our main irrigation pipes! Our house is kind of old and starting to need a lot of repairs so I wasn't completely surprised but the leak was pretty big. We had to turn off all the water to the house and wait for them to get one of their irrigation and plumbing experts over. Three locations: Cypress, San Gabriel and my favorite, Altadena. They stock the best brands in the landscape trade...Rainbird, Hunter, Toro, Netafim, etc. The store has everything possible for irrigation installation & repair, plus kickass hand tools for serious garden work, a good variety of beautiful, quality landscape lighting, plus benderboard, fertilizers, potting soil, bagged mulch and fountain pumps and more. The retail prices are good, cheaper than local hardware stores. Plus the parts will last so you won't be replacing them soon and using up all your time, money & resources. The store is in a smallish, white industrial building, kind of hidden, on Woodbury & Windsor in Altadena. It's clean, organized, well-lit and doesn't smell all rubbery or dieselly like other landscape stores. If you have a vague grasp of how to approach your irrigation issues this is a fantastic resource. Check in at the front counter for quick assistance or wander if you want to see the latest drip irrigation parts. Some stuff is behind the counter, so not completely self-serve, which is a really great old-school touch. The guys will help you troubleshoot & will help you find the parts you need. They offer occassional bi-lingual free instruction classes in irrigation controller clocks, lighting installation and it's not just product reps selling their brand but actual trouble shooting & instruction. This is a real service which homeowners & DIYers should get on! If you want to geek out with manufacturers catalogues, ask for a complimentary copy. Kinda like reading the tool section of the ginormous old Sears catalogue (yeah, that was a thing kids did in the 60s). The manufacturers provide these catalogues to wholesalers and they are great to share with clients or use as your own textbook. So ask for some! I love this store. If…read moreyou are not a contractor do not go here unless you are prepared to pay between 2 to 4 times over what you would pay at Home Depot or any other hardware store that is interested in earning your business. I purchased 20 wire nuts and 20 feet of outdoor lighting wire and the total cost was $61.98. At Home Depot the same materials would have cost $23. If that wasn't bad enough, the staff was unfriendly and unhelpful and when I checked the receipt at home, they had charged me for 10 ga wire instead of the cheaper 16 ga wire that I received. If you are not a contractor, stay far away from this place.
