This is a well-equipped site with a nice variety of classes. I do find it to feel more crowded than other area Ys. The ladies locker room is typically clean. The pool is always busy, so if wanting to swim, this is seldom my choice of places to visit. read more

I ended my membership immediately when a staff member approached me and told me I needed to put on a shirt because my midriff was showing. She claimed it made someone else uncomfortable and a bare midriff was against the dress code. I thought it was a joke. Like, literally, you could see my belly button and that's it. Looking around, I saw men without any shirts on at all and people in the swimming pool practically naked. I asked to see the dress code. No one could produce a dress code that said showing your bully button or midriff would result in you being told to 'cover up' and humiliated. I cancelled my membership on the spot. Someone from the Y did reach out to me afterwards... not to apologize but to defend their right to pick and choose what is 'acceptable' attire and what is not. Unreal. Women in EVERY GYM will show midriff from time to time. And so what??? If men can show nipples or wear no shirt at all, what is the problem? Misogyny at its finest. Btw, people who were around me when I was approached and told to cover up were absolutely in shock... I had on sweatpants and a workout tank top with my belly button showing and was more covered up than they were. They didn't get it, either. read more

It's ok. Decent weight room and indoor track. However, overrun with high school kids who use foul language(this is the YMCA, and the third letter is CHRISTIAN), or camp out on benches or machines, scrolling mindlessly thru their iPhones. I am seriously thinking of moving my membership to a health club that caters to adults. read more

I love this gym, full of very helpful people and very kind people. i wish they were open more hours because it's hard to get there on sundays when they are only open for 6 hours. over all a very nice place where the managers and people working there always greet me ! nice updated Machines although there are not many of them. over all a very nice place. read more

Nearly impossible to use the weight room. Swarming with foul mouthed teenagers that won't allow you to work in on equipment. Once my membership is over I will be going elsewhere. read more

The YMCA in Waukee is fantastic. They have a great pool, they have a great workout facility, they have two huge gyms. I love it and my family loves it. read more

Used this facility for lap swimming only. Unfortunately, the Waukee swim team also uses it. They either close the entire pool for practices or meets, or at a minimum close a number of lanes. They also conduct swimming lessons for children here, which also results in a limited number of lanes. Makes it difficult to swim in all that chaos. Pool is in desperate need of updating. The ladders to the diving boards and starting blocks are horribly rusted. read more

I cancelled my membership because I felt it was not worth the cost (2 adults on the family plan is $83.50/month). The facilities are fine, though not always clean, and there are a number of cardio machines. The weight machines are limited, with usually just 1 of each. The class schedules don't seem to take into account that many people work between 8-5p, so getting to a fitness class in the middle of the day is difficult. On top of that, many classes require an additional fee. Neither of us swim, but I had considered it and when I tried for a few weeks, I had a lot of difficulty finding a time I could go. The swim lanes were often closed for school team practices or lessons, meaning finding a time that is open for swimming is hard enough, but then there are so many people that there are often no lanes left. The basketball courts are usually full and very loud, and there are always more people on the running/walking track than is really comfortable. Given the cost, I felt pretty frustrated. When I mentioned some of these things to staff, they didn't seem to care. Overall, we ended up going to other gyms. read more

The Waukee Y has a lot of great things for individuals and families. I have been a member since it opened in 2009. I have looked at the other places from time to time and the Y facilities are still the best value. The childcare for workouts is free, towels are provided and they have a large offering of programs and classes for kids and adults. If you travel you can use your membership in other cities with YMCA's too. It can be busy place, as it serves a wide variety of persons from young to old and the swim teams, but there are slow times too. They actively request feedback from members, which gets posted in the main hallway. Check the website, take a tour, load the Y app and see what you think. Outdated facilities, pool always busy, locker room dirty, too many kids all the time and the ones on free memberships. All the Y's all need to just close or partner with the homeless or Broadlawns or something like that? They are struggling to keep up with Lifetimes of the world. The Y staff and tall head dude here was unintelligent about fitness on a tour, seemed depressed or sick or something? Are the staff paid or volunteers? He acted like he didn't want to be there. read more
