Cute coffee shop with a vibrant interior (blues and whites), plenty of space and seating, delicious sandwiches and baked goods, and of course, excellent coffee. The staff were friendly and personable, and the turn around time from order to arrival was minimal. Location near the wharf is convenient for all the tourists (ourselves included) milling about in the area, looking for a quick jolt of java and something to wash down with it. While I'm not much of a coffee person, my wife is, and that means this inviting cafe is likely to enter our rotation of must-visit places, when we return to Steveston next year on our anniversary (again)! I had a very disappointing experience here today. I ordered a hot coffee, but when I picked it up and started drinking, it was only warm. I politely asked the staff if I could use the microwave to warm it up -- I wasn't even asking for a new one. The answer was no, and instead they offered to add more hot milk. I declined because that would just water down the coffee. What really bothered me was the response: I was told the coffee was hot when it was made and that it was my fault for picking it up late. The truth is, only about 2 minutes had passed from the time it was made until I picked it up. There's no way a properly prepared hot coffee should turn lukewarm that quickly. The staff's attitude didn't help -- very poker-faced, simply repeating there was nothing they could do. No apology, no solution, just blame on me. I didn't want to argue, so I left. Plenty of space. Often I see groups congregate here. Popular with students as well. It's located on Fisherman's wharf at Steveston. It has big windows that let a lot of ambient light in. They have plenty of food to offer from wraps to sandwiches to pastries. I ordered the chicken pesto wrap. It's good sized. I like it. Lots of coffee choices too. Staff is friendly. Place is clean. Service. Went to Steveston Fisherman's market yesterday, looked pretty at the entrance and went in. An Asian guy ordered coffee for us, with a blank face and no expression. When I asked him for two cups of hot water, he charged me 1.05 dollars, which was unbelievable. I still can't believe it. Coffee stores must be supposed to provide hot water for free. Environment. My friend wanted to take some pictures and the clerk rushed over and said no, I've been watching you for a long time. There's no sign in the store that says u're not allowed to take photos. Produce. The Iced Americano was very bland in flavor and not as good as the one I made at home. The espresso was richer in fat. The cappuccino was not sweet at all. Is this a national 'chain' coffee shop ? Not 'knowing', and having been rebuffed at the 'local' , i.e. NOT national brand next door, a cafe, who said 'we don't have decaf'...... There are SO MANY, we knew we didn't want starbux, there was a Blenz down the road etc...but we.?..not really experts in this area.....chose WAVES. SIMPLE REQUEST. COFFEE SHOP. NATIONAL BRAND. One decaf please. Can I get y'all a mocca? No thank you, just a plain old de caf please. How about a cappachino? Again, no thanx, a simple plain decaf will do nicely. Having been turned away 10 mins earlier next door.... Accepted the latter. Mistake.... It was a creamy hot 'coffee like' beverage where one couldn't detect the coffee! Apparently it was caffeine free, and from a machine where the server pressed a button, and the 3 dollar beverage came out. Although a franchised coffee shop, this Waves is very spacious situated in beautiful Steveston, right across the pier. This location seems to have a playpen area so it'd be parents/kids friendly. Yesterday had a sunny afternoon, though furiously windy, and I felt like reading with a cup of coffee before the weather turns gloomy again (evidently so). I stopped by Steveston and landed here, ordered a cup of Belgian Chocolate Mocha and saw "Churro donut" on the shelf couldn't resist but to order it too. The coffee was nice, I didn't feel it was too commercialized or unnecessarily sweet, a good cup of chocolate x coffee. Honestly I was not expect top-notch donut out of the churro donuts, but it was still a decent snack if you crave something sweet, nice cinnamon taste. It was a nice ambience overall inside when I was sipping my coffee and reading my kindles. If anyone needs a spot to say work on their assignments, have a meeting, or read a book, it's a nice spacious location. Oh I'll give it a four star simply because the US dollar is so strong and things are affordable up north! My buddy lives within talking distance of the very friendly and happening area near the water in Richmond. I happily passed the large national chain coffee store, my usual, for a local and enjoyed very much my visit to Waves, on a couple mornings. The Carmel macchiato was served in a generous cup for on site and nicely prepared and presented. One day I enjoyed a scone, the other a healthy oatmeal muffin. If you come in the mornings it's quiet and it's just the locals here for a quick coffee and a chat with friends. This morning the Matcha latte was another hit. Dark green and good amounts of Matcha. I like it beat unsweetened for that purer bitter taste. The milk already has natural sugars in it so for me it's perfect. Better than Blenz and 100 x better than Starbucks who seem to have Matcha powder but it's mixed with added sugars and it's not pure. Great morning! Previous review; This is just for the matcha latte. Right down the middle on this one. Waves in Steveston gets pretty busy during the day and early evening. It's in a very good spot just across the water from the water, although Starbucks and Blenz are too. Speaking of Starbucks and Blenz, my MacBook can pick up their WiFi when seated by the windows here. But no need, Waves internet is good, and Shaw Open is also very strong here as well. The coffee: good, but somehow, although it's served hot, never stays that way for long. Perhaps the take away cups with lids are the answer. I find their food items on the expensive side, so my wife and I often just share a Nanaimo square etc. One more pet peeve here: some of the tables can be a bit wobbly, and need the old napkin-under-the-leg fix. So irritating when you're trying to work! Overall, I like Waves, and usually come here about 1/2 the time when I go for coffee in Steveston. read more

Very noisy coffee house! Nice place to escape the cold on a visit to Steveston Village/Fish Market. All the sofas, seats and stools were occupied when I visited, so sadly I got my coffee and shuffled back out into the cold. The coffee is on par with Blenz with similar prices, but they have a larger variety of tea choices and pastries. My mom says the cinnamon twist pastry is amazing. Condiments table was well stocked and clean. You can put on as many sleeves as you like on your coffee too! Not likely to be back. There's just too many coffee shops to try in this area! read more

One of many places, I go with my friends time to time is Waves. I enjoy the food and drinks there.   I like the friendly staff and I met the manager.  I like the different flavors of drinks and all the different type of food dishes that a person can eat.  The place is very clean and the food is freshly cooked.  The prices are not very expensive.   The service is fast and a person do not have to wait for a long time, but taste great.  If you are in a rush, then you should go to another coffee shop.    There are many place to sit.  I talk to the people who work there,  they busy on the weekend.   It is a large place and it is good for a large group of people to enjoy their drink or large group party.  It is better to take out for large parties.  That all for now. read more

They also have a healthy amount of "regulars" who use this location as a meeting spot and hog the tables for lengthy periods of time. Service is good and I will continue to go back. read more

I avoid this place for many reasons. a) Poor temperature control: Espresso drinks are way too hot - I need to wait a good 2,3 minutes before I can take a sip. b) Poorly maintained store: There was garbage all over the floor. Not a pleasant environment. c) Outside food is permitted (they close a blind eye): This would normally be a plus, but it's a negative if you're sitting inside the store next to a family of four eating fish and chips. I like the spaciousness of this coffee shop. There is plenty of room to bring strollers inside to order and to sit with our babies inside or outside. Other coffee shops in Steveston do not offer this kind of space. They even offer a small kids table with a toy on it. That table is pretty dirty though. The coffee shop offers tables and also a couple of seating areas with leather chairs. I'm happy with th Caramel latte and my friend loves the Lavendar latte. read more

A pretty good place to grab a late evening (non-alcoholic) beverage in the village as it is the last coffee shop standing during the late evening hours. The overall atmosphere for this coffee house is quite good. It's a very spacious casual environment and equipped with WiFi for surfing on your laptop or mobile device. A good place to gather over a cup of coffee or hot chocolate in the village with friends late in the evening (most all of the other shops are closed by 8pm/9pm-ish). I tried their hot chocolate aduring this visit and found it to be quite good. They had 3 types of chocolate (milk, white, and dark). Although I was surprised that this coffee house opened much later (until midnight) than the other larger chain coffee shops, it's actually a pretty good place to kick back and chat with friends, catch up on social media, or work on a laptop project in a casual environment that (in the evening) is not overly crowded or noisy. During the day time, there will definitely be other choices for a cup of Java, tea, or hot chocolate, but this location would still be a top consideration. read more

Have been here a number I times. Really want to like it but don't think I'll be going back anymore. The pros - great location, nice spacious sitting area, fireplace, TV, food is decent. The cons - entire staff seems to have a generally poor attitude. Really don't care and make it abundantly clear that you are unwelcome and they'd rather be anywhere else. Average coffee. Constantly getting simple orders incorrect. Specialty Coffees are served scalding hot to the point they are I drinkable for first few minutes. Starbucks is a much better choice in my eyes. :) read more

So I came here with my family for mother's day and we went up to order. We ordered a decaf Canadiano and a decaf caramel frappe. The girl then says that they don't do decaf for frappes. I used to work at a Waves myself, and I for sure know that decaf option is offered for all coffee based drinks so I asked if she was sure and she said yes. I let it go and just paid for the drinks. They made a decaf cappuchino instead of a decaf canadiano. The price difference was only $1 but they didn't even bother to give back the change and when I had my dad go up and mention the price difference, they just acted confused and sorta walked away. The girl at the cashier also needs to learn how to smile, or maybe go into another job that doesn't require customer service. read more

Went to this location at 9:30 am on a Wednesday morning. Place was pretty much dead, there were more dirty tables than actual customers. Blonde cashier looked like she was going out of her way to ring us up, rolled her eyes and huffed and puffed. Didn't bother to ask us if we wanted our drinks for here or to go and assumed we wanted it to stay....assumed wrong and the other server huffed and puffed when we asked for our drinks in paper cups. This Waves Coffee location has always been my go to coffee shop in Richmond until recently. I always frequent this specific Waves because my friend works at this location (great atmosphere, great drinks, and strong Wi-Fi!). On the weekend, I had decided to spend my time at Waves for the purpose of studying and to say hi to my friend, instead I witnessed an unprofessional employee demanding my friend to "go f-- yourself". Regardless of what the situation may be, there should never be a reason why this behaviour can ever be tolerated in society. Anyone who works extremely hard to satisfy the majority of the customers needs, does not deserve this kind of treatment from a fellow staff member. I do not tolerate this behaviour (I work in retail/customer service myself) and am really let down by the level of professionalism presented by the management's choice of employees. What I hope to see when I walk into a calm environment to study is that nobody is put into an uncomfortable situation. Inevitably, I sincerely hope that the management of Waves will take this specific situation into perspective, because I find that no matter what work place anyone works in; this negative vibe should never be tolerated. read more

I think this was the worst coffee I have had in a while. I was there from around 9PM and the woman who served me was totally hating every moment she was in there. The place is filthy as well. Not once did I see anyone sweep or wipe down the tables. The space is big but its potential is wasted. Waves needs to smarten up. $700 for TWO DESSERTS at this location. My two desserts on Monday night last week eventually cost me $700 or so, and I'm not fully recovered. I tried to phone the female franchise owner, but her answering machine just hang up without taking a message. I've met her twice, but lately, she hasn't been around. A person at the opposite end of this large coffee shop was coughing EVERY TEN SECONDS or so. My intuition said -- "leave right now". So, I caught a really bad flu and missed work. In respect to the desserts: The lemon square (my usual) had to be dragged out of the freezer. The caramel cheescake was mispriced, so the clerk punched it up as a different item to lower the price to $3.50 What should the staff have done? Take a cue from doctors .. At the Seafair medical clinic, any person with a cough is REQUIRED to wear gauze mask *and* must wait outside the clinic! There are also UV air sterilizers at many better eateries. Only $50 -- every coffee house should have one, before coffee shops get mandated by government. Would I go to "StarBuzz" for coffee? No.. there are unconfirmed rumors (allegations) of addictive coffee served there. What's good about this Waves? Has real utensils. Brighter than any coffee house with similar long hours. I came here early on a Wednesday morning around 8am and it was pretty quiet until about 9:30am. I love the location and the outdoor seating. The huge bushes in the front kind of blocks the nice view, but I like that it also provides privacy too. I ordered a regular iced coffee and it was just OK.
