A cute, eclectic spot on the corner of Hastings and Nanaimo! I just started coming here more often because I have a friend that lives in the area. Found out new owners took over recently, but the welcoming community vibe is alive and well! They have art shows/displays, a pay it forward meal program, and are open later than most cafes. The menu is extensive, yet the staff never miss a beat. They really put the customer first too. On my last visit, I went to order a matcha coconut drink from their "specialty latte" selection. The person behind the counter let me know that it was more of a superfood thing, so I was going to pick something else entirely but they offered to make me a matcha latte with coconut milk if I wanted a similar flavour profile. Nice hipster coffee shop at the NE corner of Hastings and Nanaimo. Parking is available on the side streets. The interior reminds me of an antique shop, with random knick knacks for deorations, and vintage furniture. There are also several tables outside (S and W facing). Staff are friendly. No complaints. The lady who was the Barista is nice and hospitable. The coffee's taste made our experience complete and dare to give this place 5 star. I have just moved to this area a month ago and i stop by every morning on the way to work. I have to say the staff here are all amazing! Everyone is so polite and conversational. The service is fast, and they even remember my name and usual coffee order to the point the barista and I don't even have to talk about my order unless I want something different that day. I have met several staff and all are pleasant, however then woman that works mornings is honestly the sweetest, you can tell she likes being there and has mastered pretty much everything and I look forward to our morning greetings every day. It was late in the afternoon and we were tired of looking for homes. We walked around in the neighbourhood and found this small cafe. It was right at the corner of Nanaimo Street and East Hasting. It looked cute and interesting to us. We went in there and ordered a medium latte and a medium matcha latte. We were chatting with the barista that it was our first time to drink coffee here. She was very friendly and said she hoped we would enjoy the coffee here. She made the coffee for us. She did not disappoint us at all!! Both the latte and matcha latte were SO GOOD! The cafe also sells some interesting non alcoholic drinks like apple juice and other fruit juice in an interesting packages. If I am in this neighbourhood again, I would definitely come back to try other coffee beverages. read more

Love this cozy little place! Small and comfortable, not too crowded. Vibrant, but not too loud. Friendly staff. Plenty of tables to sit and do some productive work! I rarely feel an establishment is five stars - I prefer to think they could be even better.... But today this is that slap-you-in-the face five star place. It's Saturday morning and although it looked closed from across the street - it is indeed open as promised on yelp - at 8am. Which is fantastic and rare to see. Decor is on the classically under burdened with many places to sit, unobtrusive music that isn't too loud and big plate glass windows in which to watch the world go by through. The chocolate chip muffin and large brewed coffee was supreme and can I say how much I appreciate not just being given a paper cup? She asked and yes a here mug is the way to go. Ahhhhhhh read more

Welcome to the VEV, East Cafe! My roomie and I decided to check the East Cafe out on our way to vote. They've only been open since Monday so naturally things were still a bit glitchy, but overall the experience was great so I'll definitely go back. I'd love to see the East Cafe stick around. My vegan roomie was delighted to find vegan cookie dough cups with raw fudge sauce, so she grabbed a chocolate chip one. I decided to try the same. We each got a mocha (vegan friendly sauce!) as well. They actually have both soy AND almond milk to choose from. The coconut whip (made in-house, I think?) is pretty good, but it is sweetened with honey, so my roomie skipped the whip and I got it on mine instead. They were having some problems with the register, so paying for it ended up taking a bit longer than expected, but I didn't mind. I know how stressful it can be to work in a new business when things don't always work perfectly. Cash registers are the devil. The drink was pretty good but neither of us detected much of a mocha flavour. No big deal though, I'm sure they'll have it down perfectly in the weeks to come. The vegan cookie dough was good, but very odd. I didn't see until after, but it was made out of beans. I found it a little bit too sweet for my taste, and since so many of the products in it are made from coconut, there was a very strong coconut presence. So if you aren't a fan of coconut I would avoid this one and maybe check the ingredients on a non vegan dough. Or check out one of their many in-house baked goods, which looked delicious and I am so going to go back and try. The decor was great, not too cluttered, some nice couches in the back (with plastic dinosaurs!) really neat tables with various images under a clear surface, old Vancouver-y photos and things on all the walls. I saw this reviewed on the front page of Yelp April 18th. and decided to book mark it for future reference to check this place out. The fact that they're open a little later made it easier for me to get to straight after work. I came here to get some brew for my best friend and I before we headed down to the Coliseum. The place is really tiny, limited seating. There is a lot of personality in the store. They have a great selection of locally made cookies in awesome flavors. It was really really hot inside and I could tell that the barista was feeling it as well. She wasn't as cheery and social as she should've been, however, who can blame here. I sat in the shop for an hour to work on my craft project and the sun hitting my back in combination with the high temperature of the shop wasn't making me feel too awesome. I had a basic mint tea with 3 gourmet caramels in house. The tea water was so hot that I needed an extra cup to insulate plus a sleeve. It took me literally two hours to get the tea to a drinkable temperature so that my best friend and I could share a mint tea. To kill some additional time for me to wait for the tea to cool down I decorated my cup. I was given a completely white and blank cup that I started drawing Pac-Man's and Ghosts. I did take a picture of my cup and will post it later this weekend on this review. The price was very decent for the drink. read more

I liked this place a lot, especially at times in the day where its not super busy. I like the seats and sitting spaces but the chairs are not confortable (barely any cushioning.) It hurt my back and Im not old. I came by today and was kind of frustrated hearing the conversations of 3 parties (very negative and not the cafes fault, I know.) The coffee has a burned taste but I didnt mind it. The pastries were kind of expensive so I didnt buy any. The worker there gave a couple right next to me a lemon loaf (on the house as one of their lids was off.) I thought that was quite nice. Then they did the same and gave the other couple sitting closer, at the exact same table as me a lemon loaf as well (on the house.) It didnt seem like they had any issue come up with their food and drinks and that they just gave them the loaf. I found it quite rude to not to offer me some especially as i was sitting three feet away, even just a small portion. I dont know. It just felt really off. Im not sure Ill go back. read more

The egg & green onion stuffed pastry would make one hell of a hangover cure. I like this place. It's a little out of the way for me and not exactly the kind of spot that I would crave/travel long distances to return to, but if I was in the area, yeah... i'd come back. It doesn't look like much from the outside and even the inside gave me pause. I had suggested it based on Yelp reviews for a business meeting and for the first 30 seconds thought - "Oh frig." And then the incredibly cheerful gentleman behind the counter popped over with the world's largest smile and said I looked like I needed a coffee and all my concerns melted away. It's amazing what a smile will do eh? The coffee is good. Had two in short order good. And their magical little fried/stuffed pasty things are just tasty as all hell. Next time i'm in, i'll have to give the baked goods a go, because they looked fresh and homemade. Decent cup of coffee & friendly service. So far, yeah, i'm a fan. I really, really want to like this place, but I have been in several times and it's always mediocre. Hot chocolate was pretty bland. Chai is okay. Got an Americano today, which was awful. Burnt bean taste ... I used to hate people who complained about burnt bean taste when I was a barista .... but these ones truly have it. Not the employee's fault, but when I asked for a tea instead, she wanted to charge me for both! That's not how food service works. Again, maybe not her fault - maybe the owners aren't communicating well enough what standard of service they expect? Or not empowering their employees to make decisions that promote customer satisfaction? Food has often been dry, including the Nutella cookies, which by all counts *should* be fabulous. I want East Cafe to succeed! But I don't think I'll be coming back. read more

It was unfortunate timing when we decided to visit this place because they were just about closing up within the hour so they didn't have much of anything left. Its a smaller place and the selection of items was not great but like I said could have due to when we visited. LOTS of biscotti selection though which I found to not be good.The coffee was good but the hot chocolate wasn't and it was served to me basically cold. I just started working in the area a few months ago and I am sure glad I found this cafe. Prices are very competitive and fair. Coffee is always fresh. They bake wonderful treats fresh every morning and sell the day olds at a great deal. In this neighborhood recently there have been a few new cafes like East Cafe I would have to say. I've been living in this neighborhood in the past 10 years and watched it grow. I have to say this place is just another hipster coffee shop in the neighborhood that's located on the corners of nanaimo and Hastings. I went in looking for a scone before I head to work. They didn't have any. Not sure if they don't sell them or if it was just that day when I went in. I settled for a croissant. It was really butter and good. My friend on the other hand got a breakfast sandwich that looked pretty good and it tasted pretty good. I would give this place another shot for maybe their drinks like a tea latte or coffee. read more

The comfy, lovely little hole in the wall that is Easy Café has been pouring me great americano's for the past 2 years. The staff is always extremely friendly and the food options are plentiful. The vast number of punch cards you need to weed through go to show that this place has become a staple in east van that will continue to serve the characters in the neighborhood for many years to come. read more

Walked in and loved the vibe of the place. Had a very Pacific NW feel with the old bikes hanging from the ceiling, chalkboard menus, and overstuffed vintage chairs and couch in the back. Didn't get any food but ordered an espresso macchiato. It tasted great but the presentation was lacking. No attempt at latte art. Just scooped foam from the top of the pitcher. My wife ordered a decaf vanilla soy latte which was pretty good. If you're looking for a place to hang out while waiting for a table at The Red Wagon or don't care about the presentation of your coffee, then this is a pretty nice place to hang out. read more

Very expensive! More expensive than Starbucks and just a few pennies less than Blenz Coffee, which is super expensive. $2.25 for a small (8 oz) cup of drip coffee, $4.10 for a small hot chocolate! Vegan banana bread was pretty good but not worth the $3.50 I paid for a very small slice. I expected to pay way less given that the rating in yelp is $ (one dollar sign)! read more

I recently just found this place and I've been working across the street for months. They have no sign outside to say it's a cafe. Maybe that's the appeal?? But wish I knew about it soon. It's super cozy. Can be busy during lunch but not like some of these other places in the area. I like the feel in here. It's very homey and a little quirky. Awesome independent cafe. Has great coffee, iced beverages, baked goods and sandwiches. It's also very vegan and gluten-friendly (I'm not wheat intolerant but convenience for those that are).
