I had left my house in time to be about 20 min early for work so that I would have plenty of time to refuel. I arrived at this station around 6:45, and when I tried to use the card reader, the display told me to see the attendant. She told me the system had been having issues with debit cards, but not credit, and that she would be able to process the transaction with the interior computers. I left my card with her, as I did not know how much the car would take. After filling up, the machine in the store also would not take my card. To solve the problem, the attendant tried calling the usual hot line for a phone verification, but for some reason, she did not have the store's ID for that system available, or at least not in a reasonably accessible place. She may have called two other people, but neither of them solved the issue. Having worked in retail, I am having difficulty thinking of an excuse not to have the ID number accessible, or failing that, the phone numbers of higher-ups who would know how to solve such problems. During this time, I was able to call my own credit card's hot line, just to be sure it had nothing to do with me, and having established that, I asked the attendant if she had tried restarting the computer. Given that it wasn't my card, and the system had been having debit issues relating to weather, it seemed like a reasonable step to take in solving any given technical issue, but the attendant gave me a lot of attitude just for suggesting it. At that point I was about five minutes late for work, when I remembered that I keep cash hidden in the recesses of various outer garments for emergencies. This is what finally freed me from this hostage situation. Given the predominance of credit and debit cards, it is no longer a reasonable expectation that people carry cash. I found the whole experience to be distressing and unacceptable, and will no longer patronize any Citgo or Goose Creek Market, as there is a real possibility that I may be detained indefinitely

Apparently this is the place to buy your lotto tickets and sometimes your standing in line for a while. Cigarettes are consistently the cheapest in town. Valero's rewards membership is also pretty decent. You earn points on purchases that can be redeemed for pretty much anything they sell, including gas. I've been hoarding mine and haven't used any yet. I prefer Valero's gasoline over the alternatives and they're considered a "top tier retailer" alongside Chevron and Shell. I love this place! There's just one problem. The manager(s). I've been coming long here long enough to have encountered two of them. I'm assuming the previous manager left, because I don't see her anymore. She was hostile and I wasn't particularly sad to see her go. However, she pales in comparison to her replacement. The current manager is rude, impatient, and generally difficult to deal with. I avoid coming during the day simply so I don't have to deal with her. Tip of the day: If you're miserable and looking for a fight; don't work in customer service.

On our way back however we grabbed something at a few fast food places for the kids and couldn't find a restaurant where we really wanted anything. Saw this location and the sign out front stating that it was voted by Food and Wine Mag as best fast fried chicken and gas station food worth trying. So, I put my skepticism about gas station food aside, remembering you can actually find good food anywhere- from a Michelin starred restaurant to a unknown hole in the wall- and decided to try it! Well! I'm impressed. Now I couldn't and wouldn't eat it very often because unfortunately fried chicken isn't healthy enough to be added to my daily menu but if it was?! This would be the place to get it. It was tender, juicy, crispy and tasty. What more do you want from fried chicken?! Beats most fast chicken places- scratch that - it beats all of them. It's also basically a convenience store/gas station. Store was large and clean and sold a variety of items. They sell a lot of store brand items. I bought a mint dark chocolate bar that was good and I was able to read and identify all of the ingredients which is always a good thing. If you come across one of these while traveling and you like fried m chicken do yourself a favor and stop and try it. You won't be disappointed. Just drop any qualms, lose the "I'd never eat at a gas station" attitude, and do it.
