Food here has never let me down! Regardless of what some reviews say, it would be a travesty to…read moretaste buds to add salt to the already flavorful marinated chicken. Should taste like chicken, not salt. And I am a big fan of salt. Skip the Cane's sauce. Personally, I wouldn't even go near that coagulate. It stinks to high heaven. If I would happen to add anything, I'd add some of their hot sauce to dip my fries in. Also always order the garlic bread toasted on both sides. Delicious! Previously had good service, but when I came in this time, three staff members looked at me standing to place an order and walked away to sweep, talk to peers. I had to move my head forward toward the kitchen and ask if anyone was running the cashiers. Apparently only paying attention to drive through and kitchen maintenance. Once I flagged them down and got their attention, they were responsive and professional. Was going to applaud management that they finally stopped blasting their music on the PA at levels to reach the Space Station, but as I write this, they just turned the volume back up:( For the food quality and taste (minus their sauce) will always return. Beats Chick Fillet any day.

This Friday I found myself at a Raising Cane's in Burlington, New Jersey, which as far as I know…read morehas never been the setting for any great epics, unless you count the war between people who like coleslaw and people who don't. I was there with my son. He had just finished his volunteer work, and we were both hungry. Hunger makes philosophers of us all. I had read the reviews. Many of them said things like "the service is terrible" and "this place is a mess" and "the toast was a war crime." These people must have been living in a parallel dimension, because what we experienced was very nearly delightful. My son got the Box Combo. That's four chicken fingers, a pile of fries, a slab of Texas toast, a little dish of coleslaw, and a drink. He chose sweet tea because he's no fool. He told me beforehand he didn't want the slaw. Kids these days. So I took it. I'm the father. That's what we do. He liked it all. Said the chicken was hot and tender inside. The Texas toast got a nod of approval. That means a lot from a kid who does not pull punches when it comes to food. I got the Three Finger Combo. Fewer fingers but still enough to remind you that you're alive. Fries, toast, sweet tea. No frills, just hot food done well. When the food came up, someone shouted "Hot fresh chicken for Jerry!" They weren't lying. That chicken was blistering. Had to let it cool for a minute or two before my mouth could handle it. Once I did, I found it juicy and delicious. People speak of Cane's Sauce like it's the nectar of gods. I found it fine. Not worth composing sonnets over, but pleasant. The chicken pieces were a bit on the smaller side. That's not a complaint. Quality over quantity, folks. Give me a smaller thing done well over a big one done half-heartedly any day. The slaw was cold and creamy and fresh. I liked it. It's the kind I like, chunky, not obliterated into tiny pieces. No one will write a song about it, but I'd eat it again. The sweet tea was sweet tea. You know what that means. If you don't, move south for a summer and you'll learn. The service was excellent. I mean it. The woman who seemed to be in charge was sharp and kind. She took our order and later came by while we were eating, asking if everything was good. It was. That kind of check-in might not seem like much, but it reminded me that humans are still out here trying. The dining room was clean. It was well-lit. It was also about five degrees colder than the surface of the moon. My son and I sat there with goosebumps on our arms like it was some sort of poultry-themed Arctic expedition. Still, I'd come back. I'd even bring a sweater. Sometimes good chicken and good company are enough to make you forget the cold. Almost.

I cannot tell you the last time I visited a McDonald's prior to this and this last experience…read moresurely didn't make me want to come pay them a visit anytime again in the near future. I saw a TikTok for a Filet-o-Fish and it immediately made me remember just how much I used to love them so I decided that was what I'd have for lunch. I went through the drive-thru and my order taking and payment experience was fine. The 2nd window at the drive-thru isn't transparent so I wasn't sure if I was supposed to stop there for my food but seconds later the window opened and I was handed my bag. Taking the Filet-o-Fish out the bag I immediately noticed that there was some kind of food or condiment on the outside of the box and also that the sandwich was literally just thrown together and thrown in the box because it was messy and in need of being constructed before eating. Needless to say I won't be visiting this McDonalds the next time I have a craving.

Whoever owns this McDonald's franchise location should seriously get their house in order because based on my experience it looks like their blindspots are most likely putting a huge drain on profit margins. Pros: the interior appears to be recently updated to deliver the modern McDonalds look and feel, and the bathroom was clean. Exterior is nicely manicured offering good curb appeal... (but don't be fooled). Cons: the dining room is very small. I think I counted one table near the front counter and two tables adjacent to the corridor that leads to the restroom. The soda machine was old with no button for soda water; it's not an update to one of those Coca Cola Freestyle machines that I typically see at the newer McD's. So I couldn't get any flavored seltzer water that I love to much and the only non carbonated drink was HiC. The tiny dining room has one of those two-sided digital ordering kiosks, but only one side was functional. Meanwhile the workers had posted a sign advising patrons to order at the kiosk. And perhaps I'm taking this out of context, but when I was ordering I overheard what sounded like a worker disrespecting an elderly customer. He was sitting with a couple buddies. It looked as if they had just finished their meal and were talking to a couple employees who were lazily leaning back behind the counter (not doing a lick of work while I was trying to figure out why my side of the ordering kiosk that I was forced to use wasn't working). While the OGs were still seated one of them asked a young female worker, "are you a genie?" Then his buddy said, "aw man she doesn't know what you're talking about." And the girl responded, "I wish you that weren't here anymore." The old man looked shocked and laughed it off responding with something to the effect of "say no more" as he stood up to gather his things. Maybe I'm asking too much of McD's but this place has absolutely no heart. I would opt out of visiting here again no matter how badly I have to pee.

The exterior of the restaurant was clean and well maintained, their menu boards were bright and they had lots of signage promoting new limited time menu items which included CHEESE CURDS!!??!! Placing my order was smooth and I even asked if I could substitute traditional tenders for the garlic parm tenders that came in the limited time box deal that I got (I had to get the box deal bc it came with the cheese curds lol) and the employee said he needed to check with his manager and seconds later he came back and said he could make the substitution for me (YAY). There were just a couple of cars ahead of me but I was able to pay and receive my food in a matter of minutes and the employee James at the window was very nice and also walked me through how to sign up for their new app. The food was delicious as it always is at Popeyes and the cheese curds were SEASONED AND SOOOOO YUMMY!!!! Definitely an overall good experience.

The tables could have been wiped down, but maybe they do that at the end of the night. Mostly clean except for some sticky spots. Friendly staff. But the best thing about it is they were playing soft jazz music just like in New Orleans and not loud blasting urban music Raising Cane's down the street. I was too relaxed by it to get too anxious about waiting 20min. Far too many fast food places just blast crap over the speakers that causes every middle-aged customer to want to bolt after 60 seconds. I hope everyone learns from this; ambient jazz music either directly coming from the manager or corporate, I don't know. But a very good practice.
