This place is actively changing branding to more of a BBQ joint versus a mom and pop diner. We stopped in on memorial day for lunch and they were out of most BBQ items and due to the holiday I understand that. We had to wait a long time for a waitress to come take our orders and bring us our drinks which were then served in paper cups. My dad told me this is not normal usually you get a glass cup. Once our food came I was happy with all the flavors of the brisket tacos. They ran out of the specific cheese that is supposed to come with them so I had cheddar cheese as a substitute. I think my only thing is I wish the meat was cut up smaller the flavor and smoke on the meat was really good. I liked the BBQ sauce and the guacamole on them. I would have loved some fresh salsa though. Overall it was an okay experience for a little local place on a holiday. read more

We stopped here during a trip up north and I had been here before. The food was okay and I wanted to try the pie here. I had taken my Aunt here during a past trip and she enjoy the pie before. When staying at a campground in Oconto, one of my friends said there's some awesome pie place in town. With the help of Yelp we found Wayne's Restaurant and came here strictly for pie! There are so many selections, it was really hard to choose. They were out of my first pick when looking at the menu. Be aware the menu might not always be accurate. I got a slice of the Rasberry Yummy Pie, and it was fantastic. My friends and I all share bites of our pie, so I got a bite of five pies and instantly went into a sugar food coma. Our server was BRAND new, like a young teenage girl working the first day of her first job. She was nice and shy, and who I assumed was the owner helped her out for most of it. Even though I love the pie, I would come again for breakfast or lunch. It has such a cozy feel that any meal here will make you feel at home. read more

Ordered a whole apple pie assuming that would be their flagship offering and on faith from all the five star reviews here. What a letdown. Crust was not flaky at all. Tasted more like cake dough than pie crust. The filling was supposedly made from fresh apples but I found it to be very mushy, bland and flavorless. The giant dome top disappoints by only being filled with air and not Apple - an allegory perhaps of flat flavorless bites soon to come. If this place makes the best pie in Wisconsin I am clearly in the wrong state for pies or at least of the apple variety. It's been days and the pie still sits there with none of the family interested in finishing it. What a waste of $25. A grocery store Marie calendars pie would have been better. In fairness I'll try some of the others (by the slice this time) and update this review. Sorry but at least in the apple category they need to step up their game...or lower their price on that Dome of Disaster. read more

Food here was good, they accommodate kids very well. Their signature thing is the pies. We tried the strawberry pie and the whip cream was good, but a ton of it. The poor was good. We had cod, blt, half soup/half sandwich, and a couple of things from the kids menu. Everything was good. No complaints. Not excellent, but good. I'm not sure if it's worth the trip out of the highway, but you do get a very small town Wisconsin experience, which is what we were aiming for. read more

We have been coming to Wayne's for many years (my other half has been coming since the 90's) and the quality of food declined over the past couple of years. I would have to say most significantly & noticeably over the past year. Not only are many items pre-made, they taste horrible and arrive to your table lukewarm. The only items that they appear to actually cook are their breakfast items; watch out for salt overload. The staff is also not attentive or overly kind either like they used to be. They rush you to order and then that's it, they are done. I think this place continues to get positive reviews for a couple of reasons; 1) they have been around a long time a locals are simply loyal to them and 2) because of their pies. This place has gone down hill and our next trip up in June we surely will not be wasting our money here. Very sad. read more

I'm a fan of the coffee shop diner style places with counter seats that serve all the traditional combinations of breakfast. I consider myself a decent judge of country fried steak and eggs also. Keep my coffee full, check on me a few times, and make an above average country steak and I'm perfectly happy. The place is neat and clean with great quality. I love Wayne's Family Restaurant but I do miss Karen and Jim. Fortunately the new owners have not screwed it up.....yet. The staff there is exceptional and the service has always been outstanding. I especially appreciate Lisa. I am pretty sure that is her name. She has an incredibly long pony tail. She has a quick and friendly smile, makes sure i never run out of coffee and always ask me what kind of pie I want. Wayne's has the best pies and overall great food. if you are in Oconto you really do need to give Wayne's an hour of your time and enjoy some great food and awesome service. read more

I've only eaten breakfast here, and usually with mom and dad on the way to Green Bay (an hours drive was just too long without stopping for eating..) Great family place for a huge, way good breakfast. We stayed near Oconto for a week for a family vacation on Lake Michigan. We never tried anything but the pie at Wayne's Family Restaurant, but we were completely overwhelmed at how tasty the pie was. First, my husband asked the cashier what the "best pie" at the place was. She said apple, so he bought an entire apple pie and two slices of banana cream. I will say the apple pie was probably a 7 out of 10. It was a crumb crust, which just isn't my favorite. However, the banana cream was THE BEST I'VE EVER HAD. We had gotten the pies to go, so we were eating the banana cream pie slices in the car and moaning in pleasure. Everything about the pie was scrumptious--from the bananas to the whipped cream to the crust. Two days later, I went back and got 6 more slices of pie to go. This time we bought Oreo Dirt, Chocolate Silk, and Banana Cream. All the pies were outstanding, although the kids liked the Oreo Dirt the best while my husband and I loved the banana cream. I am so sad we live far away from Wayne's Family Restaurant. I will never forget that banana cream pie. You are really missing out if you pass by Oconto without trying this pie!!! read more

This is now called River City Diner. Went with my daughter on March 12th and the service was wonderful and the serving size was tremendous. I don't recall the female server"s name or the name of the young bus boy but I wish I knew so I could congratulate them on outstanding service. I normally order the cheeseburger basket for takeout which is superb and a great value. I went in for breakfast 11/21/20, wait staff seemed lazy and confused. 25 minutes after placing my order still no food, there were about 5 other tables occupied. New owners are not doing very well. Waitress mediocre didn't bring chili until after she brought the main meal. Chili was very bland. Had meatloaf sandwich which was very good. But they are supposed to have award winning pies so we ordered one. When it came it looked like it was cut 2 days ago and left uncovered!! The black forest sandwich was good. The pies were tasty. There are few places to eat in the area and this place takes advantage of that in their prices. This is, without a doubt, the absolute WORST restaurant experience we've ever had. On our way home from MN, drove in for breakfast. We should have taken a hint from the lack of patrons, but were starving, so went in anyway. The older waitress who seated us was downright surly, and obviously not pleased. Unfortunately, she turned out to be our server. Two of our party ordered omellets, and the third, a featured dish of "stuffed hash browns". In a nutshell, all three orders were awful. The onions in all three dishes were obviously old, the omelets both flat non-descript slabs tasting only of oil, and the stuffed hash browns arrived looking like something scraped together ready to be tossed in the garbage. Toast was heavily "buttered" (and I use that term loosely), and a biscuits ordered were inedible. We observed that all the wait staff seemed totally p*ssed off. Unfortunately there were no redeeming qualities here. Both the food and the service were totally unacceptable, and offensive. Wasn't surprising that as we stopped to pay the bill, there was no customary "How was everything?". She knew. read more

A caveat: I did not try the pie! It looked good, but I didn't have any; neither did my gf. I feel like I'm being a little rough giving this place a 2-star review. However, Yelp's description of "2 stars" is "Meh. I've experienced better." And that was very much response to Wayne's. The food was all right. It was totally passable. Nothing wrong with it. I got strawberry french toast. It was a bit on the soupy side (I mean the strawberries seemed less like a topping and more like a sauce that soaked the bread, making it a bit soggy). Being from San Diego, Ca and out in the Green Bay area for a white winter, my husband, and in-laws stopped in here for lunch. Seeing the Best Pie banner was a definite lure which hooked us in. We were not disappointed. The service was warm and friendly. The food tasted like home cooking with a pinch of love. The portions were quite generous so we took a pie home for later. The presentation was beautiful with a lattice top and the filling was all real fruit. No fake fillers here. My Father-In-Law said they must have grandma in the back making these pies. There is a little gift shop area where I bought some preserves and am still enjoying them out in San Diego wishing I were back in Oconto for another delicious meal at Wayne's Family Restaurant.
