5 Star and then some ! How about the best southern cooking in Lynchburg. Vals is it. I had the beef liver n onions and I could tell cooked to order. The greens are some of the best I've ever had,(and that's including mine) They remember their customers and if Val has time, she will come out and make sure you are happy. Stewed tomatoes are a little sweet for me but I'll eat em up. Take lessons people, she know how to make fried chicken n keep it moist. The food was very tasty but if you're taking your food to-go, then I highly recommend to look at your order to ensure you have received everything. If you can deal with that along with any attitude that you may receive for mistakes made during the process, then definitely go. It's a hidden jewel for anyone who is not in the area. The reason for a 2 was only because of the attitudes and mistakes made on 2 separate occasions while in the area. Otherwise I would give them a 4 for flavor if they have what you're looking for. We were in the area for a basketball tournament and one of the boys picked Val's because it was close by. Val herself welcomed us in and gave us an overview of how the buffet works on Sundays. There is a cold salad bar and the hot bar where there are several meat selections and sides, cooked fresh that morning. I had the cream of mushroom smothered pork chop, green beans, and Mac and cheese. It was all SO delicious! Our boys ate well between some tough competition and ended up winning the championship in their division, maybe a belly full of delicious food carried them through. This is third time at Val's and it maybe my last. For lunch today I ordered the beef liver special. Unfortunately, it was not very good. It was room temperature and quite tough. My mother agreed but asked me no to say anything. The sides were good but not great. I really want to like this place but each visit has been lacking. The staff is super friendly. Very poor dining "experience." Waited over an hour for our food after we ordered and had to endure hearing Val get into an argument with one of the servers about our food order, she made the poor girl cry, just a very awkward experience and the food was good but not worth that wait nor the unprofessional experience. She clearly was overwhelmed because she is the only cook but on a weekend night for a full restaurant, I've never heard of just one person cooking. I'm sure she's working on bringing in more help because it's not a sustainable way to run a restaurant if it remains this crowded. read more

Visited Val's restaurant on a weekend night, and we had no problem finding a table. For those not familiar with this shopping center, the place may be hard to find, hidden among the "folds" of a more or less defunct shopping center. The parking area was pretty dark . On arriving, we were invited to just "sit anywhere", so we chose a table near the rear. I guess the usual procedure is to order at the desk for the buffet, or off the menu, but we were not instructed how it worked nor were we provided with menus. . Val, the owner was quite pleasant and greeted us warmly. There was no menu available,so Val explained what was available- One of our number had hoped to have fried chicken, but there was none and no coffee until Val made a new pot,. just for me. I ordered the fish, a lightly breaded deep fried whiting with the skin on one side. There was a lot of it. My companion had the "smothered pork chop" and there were two rather large chops, swimming in gravy, with mashed potatoes and green beans. I had green beans and cabbage with my fish, but the veggies seemed over-cooked. The food was OK otherwise, and my companion enjoyed her chop but said it was a bit dry. She is not a big eater, so she had to take home the other chop. My fish was also overcooked for my taste, and I wound up taking home some of it,. although I wolfed down most of it. The pineapple upside-down cake for dessert was good. An operating buffet would have been a plus as everyone on Yelp agrees it was good. A menu would also have been good. The place was clean and orderly, The furniture was attractive, but the heavy metal chairs made a horrific grinding noise when moved across the tile floor. There were also plenty of booths. While I have never been a fan of so-called "comfort food", there was nothing here to make Val's stand out in the Lynchburg restaurant scene. A small restaurant like this must be SO good that people will choose that place in place of every other place, based on service, food (quality and variety) and ambiance.. I plan to return on a better night and evaluate the buffet, or maybe at lunch. read more

I visited the new location on Timberlake Rd recently at 11:30 am. When I arrived, the restaurant was packed. I was surprised the restaurant was so cramped inside space wise compared to the size of the previous Memorial Ave location. Unfortunately the salad bar is located right in the center of the restaurant cutting off space. However, I'm sure Val had reasons for selecting a smaller space. I ordered takeout for two which included meatloaf, which was good, lima beans which could have used some seasoning, and mac & cheese, which was excellent & the dessert of the day, lemon cake, which was excellent. There's a limited menu but I'm sure you'll find something you'll enjoy eating. It seemed like there was an over flux of servers as you kept bumping into them in the tight space. The servers, being new are still in training, which I understand, because I overheard customers saying they were missing non-food items. read more

We dined in for lunch. Our first visit. It was 40.00 and some change for a lunch buffet, with water. Plus a tip. The fried chicken was obviously from the previous day. It was the driest, leather like meat we have ever eaten. The BBQ chicken was just the same, except they tried to cover it with sauce. I asked if I could get fried fish instead of the buffet and our waitress said no, it was only buffet. But a man came in 30 min later and she gladly made him fish. We asked for cobbler for dessert, but they didn't have any, but another man was served a heaping bowl of cobbler. The restaurant is hot. Not comfortable at all to dine in. There are too many trips to the table from owner and waitresses, asking how is everything, but yet had to ask them to please take our dirty dishes. It's not a self serve buffet, you have to ask for it like a cafeteria. It's a very limited line of food and to pay 18.00 a person is an absolute joke. The dessert was cheap cake from the deli grocery store. I don't know what "Val" is thinking, but you can go to any other buffet, feel comfortable serving yourself in a cool environment with oven fresh food for 5.00 to 7.00 cheaper. Really the worst we've had in Lynchburg. To be better, you have to do better. Not here. read more

It's my birthday and I want Soul Food, comfort food. I see Val's Comfort food. Menu looks great. Photos look better. Services provided were phenomenal. The food was another story. I should have turned around but I was hoping it would get better. Green beans salty, smothered pork chops tough will little flavor or seasoning. Collards were good. Chicken fried hard. Meatloaf was good. $17.95 for the buffet, but couldn't eat the first plate. No apologies, and the kitchen felt like they deserved that $17.95. I could only eat two things on my plate. I am so disappointed that that food could be served with a straight face. Respectfully, can't come back. read more

Val's place is a true gem in the city! Since March 2022 she has served delicious home cooked food for a very reasonable price. The hot/ cold buffet contains comfort food favorites like meatloaf, fish, beef liver, greens, cabbage, Mac and cheese and more. Fresh cuke salad, seafood macaroni and moist cakes and cobblers await. There is also a sandwich menu for made to order items. I highly recommend the buffet. Val is so gracious and treats each person walking in the door like an old familiar friend. Donna is also there to chat while she works to take care of diners. I dined alone and was made to feel very comfortable, and larger groups will find adequate seating too. There are booths and tables. Park by the Roses Discount store or in front of the tax place in the plaza, it's a short walk to door. If there are folks in your party that need assistance, best to drop them by entrance and go park your car. I LOVE Val's for the food and the kindness!! read more

This is our family's favorite place to eat in Lynchburg. The food is fresh and cooked to perfection. You feel like you are at home with the service, and love that the owner and staff show you from the moment you walk in the door. We drive 45 minutes to eat here. My favorite is the grilled chicken salad. My husband loves the fish sandwich that is piled 6 inches tall. The kids love their macaroni and cheese, burgers, and waffle fries. Everything thing we've tried has been special. No other restaurant like it. Highly recommend. read more
