To start, we were completely blown away by the gorgeous restaurant upon walking into the dining area upstairs. I am not sure you would get that same feeling if you sat downstairs, so if you call to make your reservation, request seating upstairs. Our server, although very new, was eager to learn and brought back answers to all of our questions; one of which was which movies were playing while we were dining. It would be cool if they started out the dining experience with this, as if they were listing off the daily specials. She was sweet and eager to learn, so I presume will make a fantastic server there one day once she's out of her training period. Anyways - the drinks were fantastic; the food... mehhh. The owner/manager (not sure?) also stood and talked to the table beside us nearly our whole time there, which was nice for them and probably made that couples' experience cool, but was a bit awkward for our experience. For drinks, we had the uptown girl, Steve McQueen, high society and Charlotte's Webb. For dinner, we had the duck cigars, 3X3 onion soup, a side of spinach-chèvre & bacon risotto, the center cut filet, and the Makers shellacked pork chop. Yes to order: duck cigars and soup, and pork chop with sweet potato No to order: risotto (way too salty), filet (should be the easiest thing / was extremely under flavored, though, blah, bland) All in all, we had just an okay experience, and thought this restaurant might have been over-hyped on reviews, based on its unique and historical decor. read more

Surprised my sister as she was having dinner with her friends for her birthday. Was immediately greeted by a lady and a man who I found out was the manager. I came in with balloons and he immediately asked as soon as I entered "Do you have anything to hold the balloon?" I'm looking confused at first like huh?? And then wow?? I'm like I'm going to tie them to the chair or to her gift bag that I was holding. Then he has ok, bc we've had balloons fly up to the ceiling and have to be brought down by shooting it with a BB gun. I'm like ohhh ok. In my head, I'm confused bc yes I understand his concern but I have carried balloons into several establishments and never had that issue. I think it was just the way that he immediately stopped me as soon as I walked in the door. That rubbed me the wrong way, but I brushed it off and proceeded to surprise my sister. We were then seated downstairs where we were served by I can't recall his name but found out it was the manager's son. He was super nice and knowledgeable. We started out with several appetizers (not pictured). The cheese bread didn't taste done, and tasted like there was sour cream or something in it. I wasn't a fan Of it. My sister loved the duck cigars. I also ordered a Caesar salad which was good, just had to ask for more dressing bc there wasn't hardly any on it. As we chatted, we all finally decided on food we wanted to get. My sister got the hardware burger which is extremely huge and it comes with fries, she loved it. I ordered the shrimp & lobster Tortellachi and it was really flavorful. The artichokes in it made it that much better. One of my sister's friend ordered the French onion soup and it was all onions and barely any broth/soup. It was such a disappointment to her and all the waiter could say is yes that's how our soups are just mostly onions. That doesn't make it a soup. Another friend ordered a salad and got chicken wings. She mentioned the wings were too soft for her but the outside looked super burnt. It was an ok experience, I wanted my sister to have an amazing experience but I think she was soo happy for the people who was there to help her celebrate that she didn't want anyone to see that she wasn't as impressed as she's wanted to be. My sister took me out for my birthday and we chose Webb Custom Kitchen to celebrate. This was our first time visiting and I was looking forward to the experience. When we walked in, I immediately chose to sit at the bar, as it seemed very welcoming. We sat and chatted for at least 15 minutes when we noticed that we had not been acknowledged. After a while, a couple came in, sat next to us, and were immediately greeted by "Ally" who gave them a menu and asked for their drink orders. As she walked up to greet them, she looked our way, but never acknowledged us. As I sat there contemplating leaving, Josh appeared and made the experience worthwhile. He took our drink orders and also made dinner suggestions. Overall the food and drinks were good. Wouldn't seat us until our entire party was there which was kind of annoying because one person was running late and we had driven an hour and half to get there and just wanted to sit down and have a drink. Food was pretty slow getting to us but we enjoyed watching the movie that was playing on the screen above us. ReReviewing Webb's. The place used to be fantastic. Perhaps we went on a few bad days. The previous two visits just haven't been great. Our drinks were still fanatic and very reasonably priced. I got a burger that was fine. My wife and the rest of the party got Filets. They ordered them Medium rare. All steaks come out Blue at best. A side was also missed and not brought until we asked the server twice if it was coming. I would 10/10 recommend this place for a cocktails but dinner has seemingly fallen off. I hope it was a fluke and I can update the review in the near future. read more

Moist not dry- savory and sweet. Awesome presentation with herbed butter, raspberry preserves and cream cheese. Had the Tres Hombre which I shared with my husband because it's definitely a shared plate. 14oz steak with 2 fried eggs and sweet potato hash. Which the hash was fantastic! But so was the steak. Never had anything at Webb I didn't love!! So excited to have brunch options so close to home on a Sunday!! Incredible steakhouse with tons of other options. My friend from Lenoir met me in the middle (I'm in Concord) at this restaurant that has maintained its physical historical flair. It's prior location as a theater was evident with little modification done to the base characteristics of the original build. We ordered the duck cigars which my friend was hesitant to try due to "duck" being in the name. She was impressed once she tried them. We also had the cheesy bread as an app, because everyone had recommended it. Delicious. Ultimately, I ordered the filet medium, which was chef's kiss, the Yukon potatoes side was also primo. Ah-mazing! I booked reservations to Webb Custom Kitchen about two weeks in advance for my fiancé's birthday, which was super easy to do right through the Yelp app. It just so happened to be restaurant week at the same time! Our meal was start-to-finish amazing! First off, the ambiance here is wonderful. I loved sitting upstairs, overlooking the kitchen and seeing the old black and white movie on their projector. It was super romantic and fun. They have a great variety of custom cocktails and a large wine menu. My fiancé ordered a bourbon cocktail and I had a glass of Cabernet to start. We opted for the restaurant week menu, and everything was absolutely delicious. The Caesar salad was fresh and yummy. I had the 6oz filet mignon and the fiancé ordered the prime rib. Oh my goodness- these were some of the best steaks we've ever had! Seriously. My mouth is watering just thinking about how good it was! Even though we were stuffed, we finished off with two desserts to share. My only complaint was our waitress wasn't super informative. She was more interested in talking to her friends at a nearby booth that our drinks were often empty. However, we were so impressed by the quality of food here that we've already talked about coming back to share snacks and drinks at the bar. I was excited to see something other than a chain restaurant in the area and really wanted to like this place, but my first impression didn't leave me with a burning desire to come back for more. The by-the-glass wine selection and service could use a revamp. I understand that you want to have brands that more casual diners are familiar with, but at least serve it in a proper stem. I got mine in a cheap "Family Dollar clearance aisle"looking chintzy decorative wine glass. When I asked for another, I was haughtily told that I could be accommodated and may use a "reserve glass." Pffffft. Please. If you want to command $15 for a glass of mediocre wine in that market, loosen the purse strings and consider serving it in a big-boy glass. What if Linda wants to feel fancy and swirl her Apothic Red? The bottle selection had some variety and a lot of the "usual suspects." For dinner, I had the Cobia. I enjoy seafood quite a lot and I've had this fish several times. The texture of the fish was off and left the impression that it either wasn't cobia, had been frozen and thawed, or was otherwise compromised in some way. It was bland, mealy textured, and just didn't seem like quality product. The cauliflower purée tasted fine and the Brussels were just kinda there. It was arranged to be visually appealing but the follow-through just wasn't there. So driving into downtown Gastonia on Thursday evening........well it felt a bit like a ghost town (surely Covid 19 has something to do with it.) Webb Custom Kitchen had been recommended to me for a while and this was my first opportunity to get there. As I approached South Street I began to wonder if they were open as the entire town appeared to be pretty well shut down. However, as I turned the corner onto South Street, I felt as though I had been instantly transported into another dimension. There was suddenly lights, very busy valets, and quite a bit of hustle and bustle. All good signs. We did not have a reservation and were a party of 4, should have known better. They told me it would likely be an hour wait which I understood, however we were seated within about 20 minutes. The lighting and decor of this 1920's converted movie house is breathtaking. They have found a way to bring this establishment to the most current and modern environment while at the same time preserving all of the nuances and delights of a 1920's movie theater. There are 2 balconies that are beautifully preserved with lovely, inviting, and incredibly spacious dining opportunities and beautiful views of the building. The general manager took me on a bit of a tour and told me some of the history of the building. The beautifully arched ceilings reflect light so beautifully and a s a photographer I could not be more pleased. I can honestly say of all the restaurants I have experienced in and around the Charlotte area Webb Custom Kitchen is by far the greatest visual experience I have found. Now on to the food. We ordered a variety of dishes starting with 2 appetizers, the Angry Lobster and the Fried Green Tomatoes. The Lobster is flash fried, has a real spicy kick to it and is served with a Jalapeño Honey Mustard dipping sauce. The Lobster was was juicy, flavorful and had a delightful crunchy coating. The Fried green Tomato's for us was the star of the evening, The tomatoes are served under sweet corn, tomato, with a light mix of jalapeño, and a creole remoulade. These tomatoes were so full of flavor; the batter they were friend in was light but apparent. It was such a perfect marriage of flavors and textures. It will be the first thing I order on my next visit. All the food was delicious, but I will comment on the two entrees we loved the most. First the Shrimp and Lobster Tortellacci. The Tortelacci is served with artichoke hearts, shallots, and charred tomatoes with a pancetta-pea-cheese filling, and dressed with an asiago cream. This is a cheesy dish, has a lot of bold flavors. Our dish was minus the artichoke hearts as the young diner of our group voted them out. I will say, I believe they would have greatly enhanced the dish and really balanced out the flavors. All in all it was a successful dish. The second dish I will mention and by far our favorite. The Lollipop Rack Lamb Chops. They are beautifully frenched, incredibly tender, beautifully plated and the blackberry glaze adds exactly the right amount of sweetness to the dish. And they are huge!!! Just perfect. Lastly we enjoyed the Cheesecake which was a simple traditional cheesecake perfectly creamy and the graham cracker crust was exactly what you wanted. And finally the service was great. I love it when I enter a restaurant for the first time and I instantly feel at home. Everything from the hostess when I first entered who talked to me about the 1920's projector in the lobby and even showed me some of its mechanical properties, to our servers who were always accommodating, and of course the general manager who with great enthusiasm invited me to take a walk around and take pictures. So go there and don't forget how many people are involved in creating your experience when you dine out. And if they wow you......I am pretty sure you know just how to wow them back!!!! read more

Made the trek to Gastonia to try Webb Custom Kitchen. In all honesty, I had never been to "downtown" Gastonia, but Webb Custom Kitchen is right in the middle of it all. Typical southern city downtown with multi-story brick buildings... WCK is a restaurant that used to be a movie theater. They carry the theme throughout: clever drink names, movie theme music in the background, and the whole place has a "old school hollywood vibe" which makes for a really unique dining experience. Our server Andrew, handled our table of 7 brilliantly as we all arrived at different times and we were all taken care of with drinks and cocktails. 1/2 price bottles of wine on Mondays ;)... so we took advantage. Since we were a large group we ordered a main dish as an appetizer that we could split, the crab-stuffed trout. We also ordered two orders of duck cigars. Very tasty way to start our meal. Then we got to the business end of dinner by splitting the beef short rib and duck duo plates with carrots and duck fried rice (we were all about the duck that night). Overall a great dinner experience in one of the most unlikely of places. The old movies playing in the background of what used to be the screen was a nice touch as well. I love how the entire kitchen lives in the first couple of rows where the theater seats use to be and how this restaurant gives new life to a space that used to be something else. read more

A hidden GEM!!! A friend asked me to brunch and I was skeptical when I saw the outside but I was SO Glad I walked in the doors. It has so much character and the staff and food is AMAZING!! I ordered for an app the flash fried lobster... it was a bit on the salty side and could've definitely used lemon wedges to help with that. I used my husbands lime from his drink. It helped. My husband wasn't a fan of the cheesy bread. Mostly because he's a texture person. The soft creamy cheese on the inside he just couldn't get passed it. I thought it was really good. For an entree I had the lamb chops with spinach and bacon risotto. The lamb chops were DELICIOUS! Seasoned perfectly. They went well with the risotto that I thought was a bit under seasoned. My husband had the mashed potatoes, ribeye, and Mac and cheese. The potatoes were delicious. The steak was perfectly cooked and seasoned, and the Mac was creamy and good. Overall I'm already planning another trip there with another couple. Mostly because of the service and lamb chops. And also bc I was torn between the fried lobster or duck spring rolls. Something more acidic would have helped cut the fried tomatoes. I also ordered the burger. It was cooked incorrectly and sent back to remake. By the time it came back I was pretty full on the side that arrived with it originally - fries. I took a few bites of the burger and it wasn't anything special or super flavorful.
