So we flew from LAX to Buffalo, NY, which allowed us to visit Niagara Falls (stunning) and then take a quick drive south to Bradford, PA (home of Zippo lighters). The first thing one notices when entering this part of Pennsylvania is how well-kept the homes and farms are. And when you turn onto the access road to the Glendorn Lodge, you see their farm-to-table patch of a vegetable farm. Once through the gate, the drive is a couple of miles to the main lodge and check-in. The staff are so wonderful and polite, calling us by our last names, which is very formal but a nice touch! Our home, cabin, was lovely beyond description. The master bedroom was stunning, the screened-in porch was perfect for 10 to 12 people hanging out (ideal for a family reunion), and we had an outdoor fireplace/pit blazing and roasting marshmallows for the kids. The next morning, we rode bicycles that you keep at your cabin home. We went out on a small lake with paddleboards, canoes, kayaks, etc. We also played volleyball and had lunch catered and delivered to the lake - fantastic service. The next day we played tennis, swam, basketball and even shot skeet! As our time at Glendorn came to a close, we reflected on the unparalleled service and the deep sense of relaxation we experienced throughout our stay. The staff truly went above and beyond, ensuring every detail was perfect, and their personalized approach made us feel like cherished guests rather than just visitors. To cap off our trip, we took a leisurely drive back toward Buffalo, savoring the memories of Niagara Falls and our time at the resort. Holiday Valley is the best "local" ski resort (in my case local means a 3 hour drive each way). I…read moream willing to make the drive since Holiday Valley provides a great ski day. The resort has 750 feet of vertical, but it skies much bigger than that, the large variety of slopes and challenges provides a rich experience. Parking at Holiday Valley is free, but on a busy day you may have a bit of a walk, especially if you are heading to the Main Lodge, but you can park at one of the other 2 base lodges, they are smaller but still very nice. My biggest complaint at the Main Lodge is that you will encounter a couple of sets of stairs to get to the slopes. Inside the lodge there are plenty of seating, bathrooms, rentals, ski shops and the usual ski lodge food. The Tannenbaum Lodge does provide a couple of rooms where you can leave your bags and bring your own food, which is very convenient. From the Main Lodge you have 2 primary lift choices, Cindy's Quad and the Mardi Gras Express; both keep the lines moving at a good pace and allow you access to the rest of the resort. The lift system overall works well to keep you moving and the lines at a reasonable level. This year Holiday Valley has gone to a RFID lift ticket which was a bit challenging to find the right location for the card to consistently activate the gates, once I figured it out it was pretty smooth. Holiday Valley offers plenty of challenge and with its location in the lake effect snow belt it usually gets great snow coverage. On my recent day trip I found the skiing better than my earlier trip to Lake open runs like Mardi Gras to rollicking narrower trails through the woods. The Black trails are always welcome with Champagne, Yodeler and Edelweiss usually worth multiple runs. Typically, 1 or 2 of these will have one side groomed and the other side moguls. There are plenty of glade tree skiing runs and a couple of terrain parks off of the Morningstar Express Lift. They even have a Double Black Diamond run, although it was not open this trip. For my most recent visit I took advantage of the Cabin Fever Days promotion to get a $25 lift ticket at selected ski shops; plenty of other people also took advantage of the promotion so it was busy for a Tuesday. Conditions were great, almost the whole resort was open. After a nice morning of skiing the Blue and Black runs, I did feel so good that I skied some of the moguls and took a few runs through the Happy Glades which is the first time I have been tree skiing in several years. I also did take a short midday stop at the Tannenbaum Lodge for a quick warm up. Holiday Valley consistently receives high marks as one of the best resorts in the East, it also gets more skier visits than any other resort in New York. I have been skiing Holiday Valley for more than three decades and I always have a great time. The drive there and back can be challenging at times, but that just means the resort is getting plenty of snow. If you are looking for a great day of skiing Holiday Valley should be on your list. In addition, the town of Ellicottville is a charming ski town and Salamanca offers a full-service Casino and resort.

You could see large groups of friends, couples, families with small children and solo skiers all having the time of their life. I was impressed that you could safely leave your skis outside on the rack and no one bothered them. That doesn't happen in Columbus, Ohio. lol This lodge is something you would see out of a magazine as it is magnificent in every way. My favorite was the large, second floor outside patio area with comfy chairs to sit and rest in between racing down the slopes. Just a place to kick back and catch your breath, and it's right off of the bar area, how convenient is that? On the first level, there is a huge locker room area with digital lockers, where you'll see everyone either bundling up or stripping down. In the cafeteria on the second floor, like I mentioned before has a huge array of delicious items to refuel your system. As you walk in the dining area, you will see a huge room with wraparound windows and I could not even tell you how many tables and chairs, and an enormous fireplace....which was a bit too warm for my liking, but I just took off a few layers and I was fine. On the first floor adjacent to the bottom of the slope, you will find a very toasty warm Starbucks offering not only their signature coffees and snacks, but also a wall of alcohol, alcoholic beverages, along with whiskey. Guess you gotta stay warm somehow. They also have a large glass ice water tower for those that want to pop in and get a quick hydrate before heading back out. And the slopes... unbelievable!!!! You literally have so much to choose from. And they are all meticulously cared for. Lastly, they have ski lessons on hand for the beginners. THE RESORT Is it older? Sure. But that's part of the charm. This isn't some polished chain-brand ski lodge--it's rustic, real, and still holding strong. There are other dining options around, and the vibe is always relaxed and welcoming. It's the kind of place where people hold the door open and toast their cocoa at the fire pit. OFF-SEASON ADVENTURES Peek'n Peak isn't just a winter wonderland. In the warmer months, the Adventure Park and ropes course take center stage--with zip lines that send you flying down the ski hill. There's also a fun mini golf course where a legendary family phrase was born: "It's the shot of the day!" (Yes, we still say it every summer.) THE GOLF Up top, you'll find one of the most underrated championship-level golf courses in the Northeast. You can bring food and alc/non-alc beverages on board for everyone to enjoy, except the driver, who can still enjoy a nice mocktail. The cabins were squeaky clean and have everything you need and more, most importantly: wi-fi, TV(s), heat, and A/C! Some cabins have their own deck, picnic table, and grill, but there are MULTIPLE community fire-pits and grills scattered elsewhere throughout. Even though we did not stay in a cabin right on the water, the second row was elevated high enough to still have a lake view! BIG BONUS POINTS if you have kids, as they have a HUGE lake-side sandbox like I've never seen before and an awesome playground! Hungry? Thirsty? No problem - take a few steps and you're at the connected Sunset Grill restaurant, which has a gorgeous view and observatory, live music on some nights, and my most-favorite feature, little dining cubbies for larger groups with your OWN, personal, controllable heat lamp and fan - absolutely brilliant. I read other reviews where they complained of the closeness of the cabins, and yes, they are very close together, but look at the map of the property layout and you'll see Cabin #21 & 22 are at the far end, offering the most privacy (these are the ones we always request.) You can see from the map if your cabin is waterfront or not, and how close the next cabin is. They did their best to insert privacy walls and landscaping trees to help with that issue. But if you are coming with a large group and want all your cabins together, the closeness is a plus, not a negative. The cabins are great! They provide towels and bedding for the main bed and bunks, but I'd recommend bringing extra blankets and your own pillows. The kitchen utensils were lacking in our cabin; we did not have a toaster, so I "toasted" the bread in a frying pan. We also didn't have a pizza cutter (I just used the butcher knife) and the bowl to mix avocados was massive with a flat bottom..LOL. I made it all work, but had I been staying longer, I probably would have asked if they had these items or went to the dollar store and bought stuff. (Or brought it from home had I realized.) SO, if you plan on cooking/preparing anything specific, maybe pack necessary kitchen items so you can accomplish your task. Also, bring your own plastic cups for kiddos, or for yourself, a plastic/insulated beverage container for walking around or boating. They only have glass (and very fragile wine glasses!) The property is lovely with concrete walking paths everywhere, 3 extra restrooms on the property, and Sunset Grille (great food and live music on the weekends). There is a kid's playground area, small sandy area, sitting spaces, fire pits, grills and picnic tables dotted all over the property. They offer non-motorized boats to all guests and we definitely take advantage of that! The kayaking is so fun! The lake is very nice once you get further from the front of the resort where it's more lillypads, algae blooms and "seaweed"... it's natural though, nothing to be grossed out about. Also, it is right off a main road, but if you pay attention to what's in front of you, not what's behind you.... you'll be happy :)
