I am about to show my age, I have been visiting Weenie Beenie since the 70's, when Shirlington looked a lot different than it does now. The one constant about Shirlington has been the presence of Weenie Beenie. This place is truly a throwback to what South Arlington used to be, a dive that has a cross section of customers, in the parking lot you can see everything from BMW's to Volvo delivery trucks to chevy's to Ford F350 dually's. This is a locally owned institution with employees that have been around for years. Weenie Beenie is not pretentious, the food is not the healthiest; but who cares, if you want high fat, high carb, stick to your ribs food that will fill you up, Weenie Beenie is your spot, if not keep on going to a salad place. I realized that my Yelp reviews were tending to be of the newest restaurants, while I've neglected many of my all-time favorite DC area restaurants. Weenie Beenie is definitely one of my top restaurants in the DMV. I've eaten here well over a hundred times and have never had a disappointing meal. Weenie Beenie is the last remaining location of a small fifties fast food chain, originally opened by a TV wrestling star. It's got excellent hamburgers, the best chili half smokes in town, North Carolina-style minced barbecue sandwiches (cooked with gas, not wood, but still good - get it with coleslaw and hot sauce), and a solid array of breakfast sandwiches. It could serve as a poster of northern Virginia's wonderful diversity -- one of the last bastions of classic American food has its entire menu (and the Ten Commandments) in English and Spanish (a day laborer pick-up site is right next to it) and its current manager is from Tema, Ghana. One of the best things about Weenie Beenie is talking to the other customers, many of whom have (like me) been coming here for decades. Solid snack shack. There is the reason the Foo Fighters wrote a song with Weenie Beenie as the title. The service was quick, but I would say that the building itself is a little rundown. I think it's almost necessary though to appear the way it does. We got a hot dog and fries. The hot dog was ok, but we only got ketchup so others would eat too. I bet if you get a hot dog with the works or a chili dog it would be great! The fries were potato wedges and actually really good in my opinion. Historically important and delicious. This place is famous for its half smokes, and for good reason - they're a D.C. staple, and they're delicious. If you have not yet tried one, you really should. That said, everything else here is good (and cheap!) too. This old carryout restaurant has some decent food if you know what to do. My wife and I came here for their "original" half-smoke. We made two visits because I wanted to give them a second chance after the first visit turned into a disaster. On the first visit, I walked up to the order window and tried to order. I had to stick my head forward through the window and yell my order because the guy taking my order couldn't hear me due to the loud kitchen exhaust fan. The interior space was mostly kitchen and food storage. It was quite warm in there. One woman was making all of the food. She was constantly yelling at the guy taking orders. She was visibly upset and angry. I ordered a half-smoke with everything, a hot dog with everything and onion rings. The half-smoke was very good tasting. It was firm, juicy and savory. Unfortunately, the toppings were very sour tasting. It was ketchup, mustard, onions and relish. The mustard and relish had an extremely strong vinegar flavor. The ketchup tasted like diluted tomato paste. I'm not kidding. The secret to enjoying this half-smoke is to forgo the toppings except for the onions. Put on your own toppings if you need them. The bun was soft and tasty.    The hot dog was decent tasting, nothing special. The same awful toppings. The bun was the same type used with the half-smoke. This wasn't worth buying.    The onion rings were fried well. The thick-cut onions were good. The crust on every ring fell apart completely on the first bite. Truly annoying because this was avoidable if it was done right. The overall flavor would have been good if it could stay intact.    The second visit was much better. No yelling. We ordered a hot dog with onions and relish, a North Carolina-style barbecue pork sandwich and French fries. The hot dog was the same as before except the relish was normal instead of overtly sour. So, It was okay. My wife felt like having this hot dog even though she complained about it before. If she's happy, I'm happy.    The barbecue pork sandwich was shredded pork not pulled pork. It had no barbecue sauce. The pork was very soft and somewhat dry. It had no barbecue flavor. There was plenty of meat. The bun was soft and tasted good. The price was very affordable, but I wouldn't buy it again. If you decide to buy it, I'd advise you to bring barbecue sauce.    The French fries were thick and fresh. It looked like they made them. It was crispy and NOT oily. Tasted like fresh russet potatoes. This was the best item that had no problem.    There are two small picnic tables on one side of the building. There are no restrooms. Ask for napkins because they don't give them automatically. They use paper bags so watch out for leaking liquid from your food. The appeal of this carryout is the low prices, especially since it is in Arlington, VA. The food is edible if you anticipate the problems. It can be good if you're willing to fix it. I just need to find out who makes their half-smokes. I don't recommend this place. read more

I was in the mood for a half smoke and decided to try them out. Little did I know that their half smokes were made with pork. I was a bit disappointed but decided to get a jumbo cheeseburger and fries. While waiting for my food I ended up getting a hot dog since it was beef. I was impressed with the hot dog and fries but not so much with the burger. It definitely was a good portion, which appeared to be two quarter-pounder patties. The burger was a little dry and the burger probably would've been better with less bun attached to it, maybe even a brioche bun or potato roll. But all in all, the hot dog and fries were on point. Ridden past here hundreds of times and finally stopped tonight for a little snack. Delicious! The half smoke had an amazing snap, was so juicy and grilled perfectly. Let me tell you the most amazing part though: the dog was nestled with onions and relish, which gave it a good tang against the richness of the dog. And yet... Had been away for a while (I used to to their affiliated restaurant Burger Delite before it closed) but had been craving a good half smoke forever. Ahhh...just like old times!! The smokes are still great and I had my long time comfort food, a fried bologna, egg & cheese on toast and some potato wedges. The place is still a precision clockwork machine and the prices are still affordable even in these times. For a side stand spot to stay standing for over 60 years usually says volumes---hence, I had high hopes for my taste buds. Of course, I looked up other reviews here on Yelp, before venturing my hard earned dollars and the verdict seemed pretty consistent. The menu has quite a few eye-catching items and my friend and I had difficulty choosing what our lunch was going to be. We decided that we would order two different entrees and split it (as we usually do at a new place), so we could both experience a broader sample. The final consensus was the: Jumbo BBQ sub with coleslaw mixed in, Fried Fish Sub, and Jumbo Fried Potato Wedges. The highest expectation was for the "Carolina" BBQ. As you can see in the many pictures, the meat is minced into a fine texture -- reminiscent of a tuna salad to me. The vinegar-based coleslaw was mixed in. The flavor had a hint of horseradish. Personally, I felt favorable on the flavor but my friend was not. The meat tasted overcooked and dry, and I was not a fan of the fine shredded texture. For a "Jumbo" sub, I thought it should have had slightly more meat, especially considering that pork shoulder (or whatever they use) is one of the least expensive meats you can buy. By the time, I got to the fish sub, my expectations for greasy spoon joy was sliding downhill, and fast. The fish in the sub seemed to be of the Whiting variety -- again a bit on the dry side. Average to slightly above average portion of fish. The potato wedges were tasty and was the overall favorite item of the day from Weenie Beenie. They were lightly battered with a light seasoning. My buddy did not finish either half of his sub, however, I did finish mine. Add the disappointment along with the long wait for our food and less than stellar customer service equals my final judgement of 2-stars. While I didn't feel ripped off per se, I certainly wouldn't stop here next time unless someone in my party wanted to eat here. read more

It's a good sized shop in a corner next to a parking lot, and although there were tables on the side, it was too hot so we stood in the parking lot and inhaled the hotdog. We got classic hotdog and chili dog all the way, and they were both decent, although I felt like my chili dog needed more chili. Service was not the friendliest but we got our orders quickly, and they were kind enough to get us a cup of water when we asked for it. For such a small outfit (literally a hole in the wall....the hole being the ordering window, and that's it), this place is expensive. For the same amount of money you can enjoy a nice sit-down lunch at one of the number of places at Shirlington Village. The exterior is just crying out RENOVATE ME. The 70's-style Weenie Beenie sign is rusted to the point, you wonder, is this gonna fall on me? The clientelle of this establishment is predominantly blue collar. Further adding to that atmosphere is the crowd of low-wage job-seekers that huddle around waiting for work to come around. Anyway I just tried the Philly Style Sub and fries, and it was okay, but for the same money you can grab perhaps a better meal and a much better atmosphere at Shirlington Village. I have managed to stop here twice this week. They offer half smokes, burgers, and sandwiches along with chips and bottled cola or fruit drinks. It is a no frills kind of place that has been around since 1954 and claim to be the place of the original half smoke - hotdog with chili, relish, and onions on it. Walk up to the window, place your order, pay for your order (I brought cash, and not sure if they accept credit cards), they make your order and they call you to pick it up from within ear shot of the window. There are areas to stand and eat your food and a dining table on the side of the joint. Plan for this to be a to-go order or eat it in your car. They have ample parking. Enjoy! read more
