This review is with regard to the classes they offer. One in particular was about growing and expressing yourself as an artist. I went to the show and one artist was not allowed to show her work due to inappropriate content? I have taken classes, and there are multiple approval steps. There simply is no way an artist is going to spend countless hours not to mention money for a piece of art that simply won't be shown. According to the artist, the work was pulled the day before the show after she installed the piece. This may be a store for supplies, but for instruction or growing artistically, I would absolutely look elsewhere. EDIT: 7/14/2011 I appreciate the response to my comment by the owner, but again, if something appears to be off, it usually is. The artist told me she was allowed to hang the work, but the piece was removed the day before the show in the middle of the night. Other people were telling me the same thing, so I have no reason to think that it did not happen exactly that way. The instructor has to approve projects in any class I have ever heard of. Middle of the night removal sounds like the owner didn't know about the piece until it was up, then removed it. That sounds like poor communication between instructor and artist, as well as between instructor and owner. As a side note, my review has been up for months with no response. On 7/2 the owner responded to my post, and within a matter of days there have been 5 new posts regarding the art instruction by brand new yelp accounts. Maybe these accounts are real, maybe not. Weisser Glass Studio has a good selection of supplies and equipment, the staff are super knowledgeable, and I love the classes there (the owner, Nancy, is especially great!). They even sometimes offer free studio time if you want to use their space to work on some projects. I wish their prices were a bit better, but that would be my only "complaint." Compared to the stained glass place in Fairfax, Weisser is significantly superior in every way The store is also well organized, and the staff are friendly, so shopping there is a pleasant expereince. Weisser Glass Studio is an inspiring place with a huge selection of top-quality merchandise. The glass they stock is absolutely gorgeous. The staff members work together well, making the customer's experience more productive and enjoyable. Staffers show interest in what customers want to do, and offer skillful guidance. I had a somewhat unusual project in mind, and the staff listened, helped me select merchandise, and also gave me space when I just wanted to wander and enjoy the beauty of everything there. I ended up with the products I wanted, and tips on how to complete the work. In addition to selling tools and supplies, and offering classes, Weisser has a very nice display of art work and jewelry for sale. Most, but not all, is made of glass, and quite a few artists are represented. An excellent place to buy gifts, or learn how to make them. I'm pleased to say that this store does not sell horrible little kits for light catchers. read more

This store is about a half hour or so from my home, but I don't mind the drive too much because of the helpful service and very good selection of stained glass supplies. They have recently moved to a new, larger location around the corner, and though I haven't been since they opened there, I would think their good service will continue. Their prices are reasonable and their staff is knowledgeable and helpful. Their selection of glass is pretty good. You feel good when you leave the store (even though your wallet may feel lighter!). read more

Weisser is a shining light in the darkness that is the NOVA stained glass supply business. I practically hear angels sing when I walk into their store. It's not too far away to be a pain to get to from NOVA which makes it even better. Their selection for COE 90 supplies is unmatched in MD and VA. They have a massive selection of Bullseye Frit, sheet glass, and rods at the front of the store. They also carry a fantastic selection of glass for stained glass by all of the big manufacturers (Spectrum, Kokomo, Wismach, Youghiogheny, and probably others I can't recall). The selection of clear textures is also great (glue chip gets really old really fast!!) and I've been able to find glass here that I haven't been able to pick up in any other store in VA or MD. The staff here is really nice, and their classes are great as well. If fusing is you thing, they have a great selection of ceramic molds. I'd strongly suggest getting on their email list because they have a couple sales during the year which means massive savings. Their pricing is really good for a brick and mortar location as well ... sure you can always find cheaper prices online, but then you have to pay for shipping and you can't drool on and look at the stuff in person. It's pretty rare that I don't want to be able to hand-pick my glass - I want to pick the perfect shade with the perfect swirl of color ... something you'll never be able to do online! Woohoo! I just came from an "open studio" at Weisser. I made two more artist friends and discovered new ways of working with glass! It never ceases to amaze me! I've been a steady client for several years now and have taken almost every class they offer...but they are always changing and coming up with new ideas! I particularly like the level of knowledge that Nancy and Sharon have, and their ability to share this with their students! If you have a question, or are encountering difficulty with a project Nancy, Sharon and the rest of the staff are always there and willing to help! There glass selection also is incomparable with anything I've found in the area. You will always find a fair price at Weisser! And, look out for those sales!!!!! read more

This place is great. The staff is open, friendly, and always there to offer help and recommendations. The classes are small so you get that one on one feeling. I'm going to be moving to Greenbelt soon; rather than being just around the corner; but, i know i will continue to make the drive to Weisser. I do think their prices are a bit high. I would like to take more classes but can only afford just a few due to the cost. (But, those I have taken have been great!) I'd recommend trying this place if you're looking for good selection of glass, frit, COE 90, classes, wonderful staff, and more. The beginner classes provide an adequate foundation for newbies. The teaching staff although experienced, is not very approachable, which could be discouraging to new students. All "open studio days" now include a $35 - $75 charge. Their website amounts to a list of classes so don't expect to find any help on available supplies or mail order unless you buy the Encyclopedia Big Book and look it up offline - kinda archaic compared to other websites. They have a small selection of books and references and lamp bases. Parking is free but awkward at best and difficult to maneuver with only one lane leading to the rear entrance of the studio. read more

Have always had great experiences with Weisser's. From buying supplies to taking one of the classes or going to one of their out of this world sales. I think they have the best selection of fusing supplies in the area. They have a small show gallery that always seems to have a wide range of art objects displayed. The staff is knowledgeable (and very pleasant) not only about their stock but also fusing techniques in general. I've taken many classes there that are technique driven, which of course we need in order to progress, but my favorite was ArtQuest, a class that I feel turned me from a technique oriented producer into a real artist. It taught me how to see the world with a different "eye." Nancy (the owner of the store) was the co-teacher, and our "show" at the end of the class provided the chance to exhibit our art in a real gallery setting (with the understanding, of course, that we needed to be sensitive to the fact that it is a retail store). This is in reference to the classes only. I just went to an exhibit at this gallery last night and found out that one exhibit was significantly altered due to "inappropriate content". I find it impossible to believe that a class project, that needed approval from the instructor at multiple steps, was finally "censored" one day before the exhibition. These exhibits are months in the making, with instructor involvement and critique. They may be very capable of teaching techniques, but I would be extremely wary of taking any class that involves growing as an artist. I find this revelation to be at the least troubling, and at the most intellectually and artistically dishonest. It is possible the classes are simply a revenue generator for the gallery. Again, it was my first experience with this gallery, but if it is any indication of how the classes are run, I would probably look elsewhere for instruction. read more
