When that nasty Christmas week windstorm dropped a whole load of tree debris in our backyard, some of it struck the back of the house, and cut holes in a window screen and the slider screen. So we threw the damaged goods into the car and drove them over to Matt at Welden Hardware. Within just a few days, he called us and said the screens were ready to be picked up. They look great and the price was very fair; in fact the job cost just a few bucks under what our homeowner's insurance company allowed on their estimate. Welden is really quite a cool store. We spent some time wandering around when we dropped off the screens and saw a big variety of products -some of which you'd expect to see in a hardware store (electrical, tools, paint, garden equipment) and some surprises, like snowblowers, kitchen supplies, and gloves. Next time you're thnking of driving to one of those big box hardware stores, check out Welden. Visiting Family in Simsbury and purchased a toilet seat, yes a toilet seat. The staff was very knowledgeable and I am fully educated on types of toilet seats. Made it to the house and got as far as step 1 in replacing the old one; the supplied hardware not correct for the seat. So, back to the store for some root cause corrective action. Bottom line, the factory changed the hinge design and the hardware was for older style. Provided a matched set and the house is fully poop enabled once again. read more

We must celebrate diversity, and we do. But there is no requirement to celebrate shite service, corporate sloth, reliance on centralized purchasing power, and McDonalds-level aptitude tests along with commensurate pay. Go over the hill you lazy bugger and patronize a store that values your time - and their own - as much as you do. If they don't have it or cannot get it you will know that in a jiffy - but chances are whether it's a pry bar or a sink strainer or snowblower repair or specialized drill bits or paint or a level or clamps or gloves or a mower or a tiny screwdriver or items to perform toilet repairs... you get the idea. Take your kid, gender doesn't matter, and wander the aisles crowded with the magic of an old-school, cold-school, highly efficient and friendly store. And thank the good lord for two things: you live in America today, and won't live long enough to see the nation fracture into multiple warring querulous territories like it was before 1789. I'll never go back. I brought in a lawnmower for service per the manufacturer (did not purchase here) and spoke with the folks on the phone, they told me to bring it in. What I experienced was terrible. The man in the shop that waited on me told the customer before me to trade in his back-pack blower for something "quality" since fixing it might be expensive. You know they would just fix it after selling it and then resell the used one. Then it was my turn and I was told that they didn't want the work under warranty as they always get "turned down" by the manufacturer. They could have told me that on the phone---I'll buy a new carburetor and put it on myself rather than watch what I saw or worse be told that I should buy "quality equipment" like the man in front of me. I spoke with the owner who was no more helpful than the folks in the shop (one of which was an owner I learned). A waste of my lunch-hour. read more

My favorite hardware store hands down! They are so friendly and helpful. They always greet me and help me with whatever items I need for my current project. And on the rare occasion they don't have what I need, they either special order it or help me figure out where I can find it. Love having such a wonderful small business in town. Such a cute little hardware store. They've got all the basics and then some. We always go here for items we need around our shop to support local businesses here in Simsbury. I'd really like to give a terrific review and support local business. The folks here are super friendly and willing to help, the prices are reasonable for a local hardware store, and they are knowledgable on a variety of topics. Here comes the however... I took my mower to be serviced here (against the advice of a neighbor who had a bad experience as well), and when I got it back, the battery was completely dead. When the mower went in for service, it had an 8 month old battery in it. They obviously left the lights or something on and killed it. Then I took my mower wheel in when the tire went flat. They called me at home the next day to pick it up, and the tire was still flat. Took them another 2 hours to fix. I went to pick it up, and just happened to notice that the bolt that holds the wheel onto the mower was now missing. They easily located it, but if I hadn't noticed before I left, it would have been lost. Synopsis: try another place in town for service of your mower. read more

I wanted a generator for the impending hurricane (Sandy) but waited until the last minute. Everyone was sold out and the few places that were getting them ( mostly Lowes and Home Depot) could not give an exact time and would not take a pre- order or hold one for me. It was first come first serve- which meant going to the store in the morning and just waiting around until the truck delivered them and then probably fighting the masses to get one. Not something I was going to do. I read on facebook, through a post by WFSB news, that Welden Hardware had some generators left. I called and spoke to Scott, who said he was getting another batch in so come down right away to pre -pay if I want one. I explained to Scott that I live about an hour away from the store and would head down right away but didn't want to get there just to find out they were all sold. I asked him if he could please hold one for me- I would even give him my credit card info over the phone. Not necessary - I will hold one for you as long as you are coming now, he said, and took my name. Not only did I get a generator , they also helped my husband squeeze it in our car. I am totally impressed! Everyone there was so nice and professional- even though they were really busy and the phone kept ringing with other people looking for things to prepare for the storm. There is definitely an advantage to shopping the small business guy. I highly recommend Welden Hardware. read more
