Overall, a 3.5/5 but I'll round it up to a 4/5. The service and ambiance were amazing, and the bathroom is one of the nicest I've been in. For food, we ordered: 1. You Fan with uni (3/5): Personally, I think the uni was wasted on this dish. The You Fan has an extremely strong cinnamon/star anise flavor which overpowers the uni. Maybe they accidentally added too much 5 spice? I haven't had You Fan with such strong cinnamon/anise flavors before. Definitely a unique flavor I wasn't familiar with. Separately, the uni was very fresh and tasty. But together, I don't think the combination works. I'd definitely rather eat uni at a Japanese restaurant with just nori and rice. 2. Popcorn chicken (4/5): Juicy, spicy, tangy, delicious popcorn chicken bites. The only reason why I don't give it a 5/5 is because it's nothing extremely special. I've had a lot of good popcorn chicken in the city, even at random boba shops. 3. Numbing salad (5/5): By far our favorite dish of the night. Slight numbing but not too numbing. The sauce was slightly sweet, tangy, garlicky, and spicy. A very good dish to eat after eating a dish with heavier flavors. 4. Shrimp floss with lettuce wraps (4/5): Very clean dish with very nice textures. Not too flavorful which is good and bad. You can ask for chili oil and add that if you want an extra kick. 5. Tang Yuan dessert (1/5): Our least favorite dish of the night. We only had a few bites. The tang yuan was lukewarm and was tough. It wasn't chewy, soft, and hot like a normal tang yuan. I asked the server and he said it was supposed to be like that since it was fried. I guess I just didn't like the dish. The ice cream was normal and nothing special. I also personally thought the cilantro did not completely work with the dish. We also ordered 3 beers. It came out to about $210 after tip and tax. Delicious Taiwanese food served with cool vibes. I love ordering whole fish at restaurants and the steamed fish is among the crème de la crème of whole fish dishes in the city. Also highly recommend the cold sesame noodles, one of those seemingly easy dishes that's on every Chinese restaurant menu but takes skill to pull off just right (and the one served here is just right). Incredible food and great service. The waiter we had was very nice and friendly. For bites we got the popcorn chicken and that was made very well. The crispness of the chicken was great and the sweet sauce it had went well. We also got the cold noodles, chicken sandwich, egg tater tots, pea shoots, and pork rice dish. We visited around 9:30 on a Wednesday night and were told that we would have to wait for 15 minutes...but after waiting, we were seated at a table that was already available when we first walked in. While there are peanut-free options, it isn't particularly friendly for those with peanut allergies. We didn't get to order the BDSM chicken, which is supposed to be the most popular and limited item on the menu. The shrimp floss lettuce cup might be the only thing we ordered that I would want to eat again. I loved the crunch of the youtiao and it was a unique spin on the lettuce wraps I've had in the past. Tried the brunch menu with a party of 5 and there were so many options that we ordered so much! It was super filling and personally enjoyed all the dishes, though definitely a favourite or two here and there. Between 5, we got: - Numbing celtuce salad - Crispy fried tofu with garlic soy paste - Fly's head - LoBaBeng - Cold sesame noodle - BDSM chicken sandwich - Soy milk with youtiao The numbing celtuce salad was outstanding!!They got the peppercorn flavour perfectly, while leaving the vegetables extremely crispy and refreshing. It makes for a great hot day out dish that you just keep reaching for. This is an appetizer so the size of the dish is rather small, and definitely wish there was more. The fly's head was also incredible. I'd recommend getting some rice to go with it as it's extremely "pairable" - if the fly's head and rice is all you got, that honestly makes for a great meal by itself too. And of course, the BDSM fried chicken was just as juicy and tender as you think it will be. I personally loved how it came in the form of a sandwich, as I think that combination gives it that much more texture than if it was the whole chicken (though would love to try sometime). The chicken, even in the sandwich, could have done with just a little more flavour if I had to point out something about it, but otherwise I really enjoyed it with the buns and fries on the side. Asked for a bigger table (for 5) as we have a 70 years old, however, the staff told us the bigger table was booked for a bigger group. It turned out that group has 4 as well. As the other low reviews have all mentioned, I reallllllllly wanted to love this place and was so excited to have "authentic Taiwanese food" in NY. I made a reservation a month in advance. We were seated immediately upon arrival, which was great, but the seats are really smushed together which can make it a little uncomfortable. We started with their popcorn chicken and it really was delicious, but everything else fell so flat after that. Thankfully, since we knew they were the sister restaurant of 886 and hadn't been impressed by them either, we weren't expecting too much...but also, this place was getting so much hype! Several of their menu items are similar at both locations so we ordered things that aren't already available at 886. We got the water spinach and shrimp paste, 3 cup chicken, youfan, pork belly and cuttlefish, and the fried tang yuan. Water spinach is probably my favorite veggie of all time, but this one was so spicy it was hard to enjoy. Also, growing up in a Taiwanese household, I've never had water spinach that was so soaked in liquid--perhaps this is authentic to another region of Taiwan, but it was disappointing. The 3 cup chicken was too well seasoned. The you fan was very oily and mushy--usually the rice can be separated kernel by kernel while still maintaining a chewy consistency. It was also over flavored and was borderline dark brown/black in color (there should be soy sauce coloring to this dish, but to a light golden brown) that made it further unappetizing. The fried tang yuan was ok, but I wish they would have had guobing or babaobing--something more "authentic" to Taiwan. I'm glad I tried it out and that others are enjoying, Wenwen, but it did not hit the spot for me as being "authentic Taiwanese" and sadly I continue my quest for tastes of my childhood in NY. read more

I hate to write that this place was "OK" but I think the expectations were so high given the hype and the mayhem to get a reservation here! They had an issue with staffing the original night we had a reservation and they kindly rebooked us. Upon arriving, it has a classic sort of Taiwanese/Chinese interior. The chairs were those of the Chinese dim sum restaurants I grew up going to as a child. They were not comfortable lol! I also would say to add purse hooks or something because multiple girls were holding their bags in their lap. Otherwise, decor was fun and inviting, music was upbeat. The bathroom was so fun, like a mini karaoke bar. We ordered a round of drinks, nothing special for a $16 cocktail. For entries: Celetuce salad, popcorn chicken (since it was just two of us and the BDSM was done for!), shrimp floss cups and You Fan. The appetizers were delicious and full of good flavor. The shrimp floss was very "clean" tasting which I loved but my partner had wished for more of a punchy flavor. The YouFan was where we were disappointed and maybe it's because we weren't sure what to expect. They were out of the uni by the time we had our 8pm reservation so we got it without. The flavor was interesting and in my opinion did not pair well. It was smokey, sweet and salty? The 886 noodle was not bad, a little thick of a sauce for my taste but the flavors were all there. The hot honey chicken nuggets were ASTOUNDING!! My favorite dish of the night by far. The you fan tastes just like a glutinous chicken wrapped in banana leaf you would have at dimsum, with a delicious bacon slice on top. I really enjoyed the shrimp floss lettuce cups, but this dish did take a bit longer to come out. The Tangyuan dessert was very imaginative and delicious and a great way to end the evening. The only gripe i have about this place is the timing of how food came out. Our popcorn chicken came out pretty quick, then 5 min later the you fan, but then we waited at least another 20 min after that for the shrimp floss the come out. They serve Taiwanese food that will shake your core to its very essence with the best of nostalgic 70s ktv vibes so let me paint you a picture. First you arrive in the restaurant and are greeted by the extremely friendly staff. You notice the cozy bar with dimmed soft lighting to your right, dining tables with concentrated light focusing on the important things (the food) to the left. You sit down and notice the really stylish and cute chef through the pass. She shoots a piercing look to let you know she means business. You start with an order of the celtuce salad that tingles in all the right places, with its effortlessly effervescent notes of peppercorn and garlic (garlic garlic). The owner brings a shot of baijiu, you bring a gasp of exhilaration. Already feeling numb and woozy, the next course appears -- the shrimp floss in lettuce cups. Never more have you wished you were reborn as a shrimp so you could exist in these lettuce cups. The Kavalan old fashioned appears out of nowhere and brings you aboard the car to flavortown. Now the heavy hitters start coming. The pork belly and cuttle fish. If we were to eat the rich this is what they would taste like (so soft. so rich.) The youfan with bacon and uni. The bacon is so smokey you might develop a cigarette addiction but just as you ask for a pack at the local bodega, the uni gives you a soft hug from behind telling you "no, baba and mama are proud of you." You are shocked back to reality as you are served a wonderful choice of beer from a local brewery. Finally it comes. The BDSM Chicken. Its named BDSM for a reason (brined deboned soy milk you pervert). But just like the BDFM subway it will take you downtown to flavortown using whatever damn line it pleases. By now you seek respite in the bathroom, but you are greeted by a discoball and Taiwanese karaoke music. You go about your business, but can't help but hang out for another half hour to sing a few songs before returning to your journey. You are still bursting at the seams, sweating profusely as you beg "please, I can't go on". The Ann-gels hear your plea. They bring you dessert because there is always room for dessert. It's in the form of fried tangyuan with the most exquisite vanilla ice cream(industry secret). Its a fight to the death -- where previously laid full, sluggish behemoths was now witness to the carnage of ravenous fiends one would have thought to be on the brink of death by starvation. The chef screams (their favorite song, the 10 minute version of Taylor Swift's All Too Well). You black out, only to wake up realizing you are not at Wenwen but at home. Crazy luxurious - Red braised pork belly and cuttlefish. But this was a big miss for me. We ordered the popcorn chicken, you fan, and 886 noodle as well as the boiling point drink and everything was either too salty or underwhelming. Popcorn chicken was definitely the best out of everything we ordered. Crispy and juicy chicken with yummy sweet sauce. The you fan was so salty and I couldn't bring myself to even finish the portion on my plate. I will be taking this home to add more rice and veggies to this dish as it was not even edible. The 886 noodle was fine but again, I am hoping to add more veggies when I'm home to nullify the overly salty taste. Lastly, the boiling point cocktail was a drink I was really looking forward to having but the apple cider vinegar is all I could taste. I was skeptical going in because I grew to not enjoy 886 that much and knew the same owner opened Wenwen. However, I was really happy with the food both times I dined. The second time we were lucky enough to get one of the orders of the bdsm fried chicken (they only sell a few per day so I'd say it's worth trying if the opportunity presents itself) and it was delightful. I am not a huge fan of beef noodle soup and am very particular about the taste (the best ones I've had are still from hole in the wall places in Taiwan), but really like the one here! Pass on the you-fan - I prefer mine authentic and the spices they use do not do this dish any favors. The fish is a no brainer - the flavor is phenomenal and my favorite part is they debone it for you! If you want to order a vegetable to balance our the meal I suggest getting the water spinach. I also enjoyed the crispy tofu - the garlic sauce they give is tasty. I don't remember the cocktails I ordered but they were also good and it's exciting that this place serves alcohol because that was a missing element to 886. If you're after the BDSM chicken, they only have 5 per night so go early if you've got your sights set on that. We actually found most of the dishes overly salty rather than flavorful. The best dish of the night was dessert - they only have one on the menu right now but would say it's worth ordering. If you get a reservation for "Alley" you'll be seated downstairs and - be warned - it can get extremely loud due to the small space. A word of advice? Get the earliest reservation possible and order the BDSM chicken the SECOND you sit down, because, for some reason that makes no sense, they only have 5 chickens available each night. So even if you show up on-time for your 5pm reservation on a random weeknight, you'll learn that all 5 of BDSM chickens have already been ordered, a mere 25 mins into their opening. We ordered the Celtuce salad (just alright, I'd skip this tbh), the crispy fried tofu (spectacular), the shrimp floss lettuce cup (solid), popcorn chicken (also solid) and the fried rice (just alright). I'd give the fried tangyuan dessert a 5-star rating all on its own. Though I'd argue that the cilantro does not belong on that dish. I usually don't mind cilantro, but that's when it's on a savory dish -- it's more of a "oh, there's cilantro in here" when it's part of a dessert.
