I would say this place is somewhere between a 4 and a 5. It isn't the best Taiwanese food that I've gotten in NYC, with better ones being much further away at Elmhurst. If going by borough, I would say this place is the best one that is located in Brooklyn. The only problem is this place is sort of not easy to reach as we made going to here as a day trip and it sort of was. Service was kind of fast but it was also weekday afternoon so there weren't much people. The whole place has the vibes of a store trying to preserve as much of its history as possible as there lots of random things hanging on the walls. I do recommend hitting up the fridge for some authentic homemade soy drinks. read more

In a sea of warehouses, you have this no frills eatery serving up some of the best home style Taiwanese comfort food. The five cup chicken was sticky, tender and flavorful. Definitely a great rendition. The noodles are a little too soft for my taste but my favorite has to be the dumplings which may not be 5 for a $1, but they are some of the best seasoned dumplings you'll ever have. I saw sign on the wall about past dumpling making classes. I'm no novice in terms of making dumplings but I'd sign up to find out their recipe! For drinks you can beat the $1 prepackaged Iced Milk Tea in the fridge. I always grab an extra one to bring home. The decor is a little behind the times and legal parking is really hard to find. I always end up "parking" and having to keep a close eye on my car from time to time. This part of Brooklyn is full of bumper car drivers. This is such a great family-owned restaurant. The service is super friendly and helpful for first-timers ordering. The ambiance inside feels very homey and like you're really at a community-oriented restaurant. The real star of the show is the food. We tried the Braised Pork Belly over Rice and the Basil Chicken over Rice, and both were extremely flavorful. The Braised Pork Belly was so tender it would nearly melt in my mouth, also having great flavor. The chicken was cooked perfectly with a nice bite to it and a great basil flavor that came through. Got takeout & it was delicious - everything was well packaged and the dishes were insanely flavorful and authentic. The Braised Pork over Rice was so rich while being both fatty and lean. The sauce paired incredibly with the rice - the egg was a scrumptious bonus. The Garlic Eggplant was an underdog for me - this was easily tied with the Braised Pork and I couldn't get enough. I could eat bowl after bowl of rice with this sauce and tender eggplant. Chicken wings were good flavor, but was a bit soggy when it got to me - would try this or crispy chicken in person. The noodles tasted very processed and the broth was good at first, but slowly lost its appeal for me - but maybe it was just the dish overall that left me wanting more. Highlights were definitely the dumplings: the bread and butter of A Pou's business. I honestly don't even know if I can call them dumplings. They were more like taco shells awkwardly folded over filling. There were no pinches, no seals, and definitely no way to eat them without everything falling apart. The wrapper was super thick and doughy--not my thing at all. A gem in east williamsburg. We found ourselves in the area by happy accident and, despite not being hungry, knew we had to check this spot out. It really feels like you're in a grandma's home (think red decorations, chinese karaoke playing on the tv, eclectic collections of plants in every sort of container) with cooking that is comforting and familiar. My partner and I shared the braised pork, taiwanese beef noodle soup, and pork dumplings. We also treated ourselves to a drink from the $1 drink fridge (which has some very fun flavors -- we got lemon black tea and passion fruit)! The food was delicious, flavorful and piping and amazing value (nothing we ordered was over $10). Service was fast, and they take card as well. The decor inside is like a typical Asian grandma's house - true maximalism. It's a bit of a hole in the wall, but it seems to be popular with the locals. Don't get me wrong, this is still definitely one of the better ones I've had - the broth had depth, noodle portions were generous, and the beef was tender. I had had this place on my to-go list for a long time, but never managed to be in this area. As soon as I saw the old lady behind the counter I smiled, nothing like a Taiwanese grandma to make delicious food. I saw the things people were eating and decided to go with the classic beef noodle soup and potstickers. Came here on a weekend for lunch after hearing some friends mention this place and I happened to be craving Taiwanese food and was in the area. The inside reminds me a lot of other home style Asian restaurants, nostalgic and familiar. We sat ourselves and a waitress gave us menus and took our orders shortly after. For 2 people, we shared braised pork belly over rice, beef noodle soup, and 5 dumplings. The braised pork belly also comes with an egg and some vegetables and was so good. The pork is very tender and a good ratio of meat to fat. The beef noodle soup came with a good portion of beef and some vegetables as well. The soup is not spicy but they have chili oil that you can add to spice it up. The chili oil is also super delicious, highly recommend. Both items vegetables were boiled mustard greens which have a slight bitter taste that complimented the richness and meatiness of the dishes. I just wish they gave more vegetables because the vegetable portions were small. The pork dumplings are crispy but also chewy and the meat is seasoned so well. Some of the best dumplings I've had from a restaurant! I'm so glad I was able to try this place. They take card but cash is preferred. I was super exited to try this place, and I hate writing bad reviews especially for small businesses. But hear me out. Ordered a bunch of dumplings, the braised pork over rice and beef soup noodles. Popped open the dish and saw so much hair on the skin of the pork. I just can't... I ended up removing the top layer and eating it still but the flavors had the musky weird smell. My mom makes this dish at home and told me that it's because of the quality of the pork or it wasn't braised long enough. How is it okay to serve pork with hair like this? This is not okay even for Taiwanese standards. The beef soup was fine and I enjoyed the texure noodles lot though! And Broth was just okay. My friend saw this place on IG? tiktok? anyways and of course we had to come, since I am always in search of good, affordable Taiwanese food around NYC. We got there around 6:30 ish and it was surprisingly busy! There just a handful of seats available for us. But people eat quickly and within 10-20 minutes most seats were empty (所以來得早不如來得巧). Since it was rather bustling when we arrived, we were a bit confused on how to order etc since all the staff were handling other customers for short while, but eventually they came over and brought menus to us. (And later they came to our table to take our order, after I walked up to the counter to try to order lol) My friend and I both ordered the beef noodle soup. It came out pretty quickly and I was so excited ! It smelled so authentic and fragrant, and there were SO many pieces of tender, juicy beef. The noodles were like the knife-cut ones (刀削麵), which was nice albeit a tad unorthodox. Instead of the usual veggies like Chinese broccoli, gaoli cabbage, or bok choy, the noodles came with some broccoli on top. Have I seen it before in beef noodle soup? Yeah I guess, but is it common? Not really. Also, I don't like broccoli so there's that. Anyways. We also had some pot stickers too; originally we tried to order 10 of the pork fillings to share, but the nice boss lady 老闆娘 suggested we get 5 of the pork and 5 of the kimchi beef for some variety. Unfortunately the pork dumplings were way better than the beef ones so note to self: take advice from well-meaning grandmas with a grain of salt in the future. They were all very tasty, for sure, but the pork ones had juicier fillings and a more balanced flavour overall, while I didn't really feel like the beef and kimchi complemented each other well here. Cash only, expectedly, and they have one of those no-name (probably crazy surcharge) ATMs in the corner for if you really forgot to bring cash I guess. And it only came out to $30+tip for the both of us! What a steal. It really did feel like a very casual and intimate environment - a lot of the decor feels like sitting in your (well, at least in my) grandparents house, and there's a huge TV on the wall playing karaoke videos for some questionable Chinese songs from the last half-century. Also, the owner was so sweet, coming over regularly to check on us/our food and making some small talk with us. Probably the most authentic part, though, was at the end. After paying, I was just chilling at the table waiting for my friend in the washroom, when the boss lady walked over, looked me up and down a few times, and gave me some advice on facial skincare. I highly recommend dining in for a true old school experience (which I say with genuine love!) -- you sit on wooden boxes and dish out as much hot sauce as you want.
