They were among a half dozen sharecroppers who eventually were able to buy the land they farmed enabling them to work for themselves. Tony Mitchell helped those in his community get business loans and Cheatham Moore was the first African-American appointed to the City's Housing Authority. Mitchell and Moore were both instrumental in getting the city to create Westside Park in 1951 so that African-Americans in the segregated city would have a place for recreation. The park has now been named the Mitchell Moore Park and Community Center to honor the men's legacy. You can find the 16.1 acre Mitchell Moore Park next to Blanche Ely High School. Park amenities include a 10,000 square foot community center which has a gymnasium, arts and crafts room, meeting rooms, and kitchen. The park also has five lighted basketball courts, football/soccer field, picnic pavilion, playground area, lighted softball/baseball fields, four lighted tennis courts, volleyball courts, and the Houston/ Sworn Aquatic Center with 9, 25 yard lap lanes and 2, one meter spring boards. In 2021 The Orange Bowl Committee and the City of Pompano Beach partnered together to create a 4 million dollar recreation facility including a new football field known as Orange Bowl Field at Mitchell Moore Park. The Orange Bowl Committee's Legacy Parks program has provided over $21.5 million worth of improvements to selected South Florida parks and recreational facilities. Other improvements to the park included new synthetic turf football field, an electronic scoreboard, a new press box, shaded seating, an enhanced walking trail, and upgrades to the two existing baseball fields, and building refurbishments. Mitchell/Moore Park brings the community together. The park hosts many events. sports teams, lessons, and activities like summer dive in movies at the pool. The football field is state of the art and gives the youth in the city a safe place to practice sports and learn all the great lessons that come with it. There are so many recreational opportunities to enjoy in this well appointed park.

Hunter Manor's Park is an 8.4 acre park that will soon be bordered on the east by a new 9 acre, 59 home residential development by homebuilder D.R. Horton. Park amenities include pavilion shelters, picnic areas, grills, benches, restrooms, an exercise path with fitness stations, tennis courts, a covered playground, basketball, handball, exercise area, and volley ball court. The park is often used to host community events. The next one is a Caribbean Festival on October 14th from 5 to 10 PM. Hunters Manor Park is a well maintained park, ideal for taking the kids to play, exercise, or having a picnic.

What was once an eyesore for the community has been transformed into a beautiful natural asset. Edgewood is tucked into a corner of Ft. Lauderdale bordered by major thoroughfares Interstate 595 to the south, Interstate 95 to the west and State Road 84 to the north. Broward County purchased the trailer park as part of a program to reduce airport noise. It is located near the airports south runway. The park was part of an agreement between the city of Fort Lauderdale, the South Florida Regional Planning Council and the airport when the south runway was going through the approval process. The park has a half mile paved walkway with 8 exercise stations along it. There is even a small hill in the park, an rare sight in Florida. As you exercise you can see and the planes next door at Ft. Lauderdale Hollywood International Airport as the cars rush by on the highway. If you live in the is neighborhood you are used to noise. One important thing to note about this park is that dogs are not allowed. Most passive parks are just a small piece of land and I was amazed at how large this park is. Many people were running, walking, and just playing with their kids. This would be the perfect safe place to teach a child to ride a bike. As I was exercising I saw several birds throughout the park. I had no idea that this massive park was located in such a busy corridor of the city. This is such a fantastic amenity for the Edgewood community.

Lafayette Hart was a community activist and owner of Hart's Fix It Shop. Hart helped form the Washington Park Homeowners Association which began pressing for creation of the park in the early 1970s. In 1975 the park was officially dedicated. In 1992 the park was renamed Lafayette Hart Park at the community's instance in honor of Mr. Hart who had passed away three years earlier. Lafayette Hart Park is 3.1 acres and is completely enclosed by a fence. The park has a community center, restrooms, basketball court, picnic area with grill, playground, racquetball courts, volleyball court, and shelter and room rentals. The courts were looking worn but the playground was quite nice with a shade cover. Lafayette was a champion of his community and would undoubtedly be proud to know that a park that carries his name is still serving his community today.

While this park is small it has everything you need starting with a nice sized parking lot and one of Weston's excellent and clean public restrooms. In the center of the park there is a playground with shade covered seating. On the left side of the park next to the restroom is outdoor fitness equipment for adults including a pull-up/dip, squat press, and stretching station. On the right side of the park is a half basketball court and bike fix it station. Throughout the park is paved walkways, landscaping, and lighted walkways. My favorite part of the park is the beautiful plants and trees. Purple and white Crepe Myrtle trees in full bloom are planted throughout the park. A Weston park is always clean and meticulously landscaped making it an attractive recreational resource for anyone looking for a place for play or exercise.

Hoffman Park is located in the historic section of the city of Plantation Florida. It is the area…read moreof Plantation that contains the original one-acre homes from the late 1940's that were marketed to buyers as "Little Plantations." The park was dedicated on October 20, 1963 in honor of Dr. Abraham Hoffman. Dr. Hoffman and his wife Helen Betty moved from Chicago to this area in 1943 and were among the first 12 residents to settle here. In 1949. The Hoffmans organized the Plantation Homeowners Association, which formed the basis for the city's incorporation. They remained very active in the community and Helen Betty formed Plantations first library which is now being temporarily being housed in the Edwin F. Deicke Auditorium adjacent to the park. Besides being named for one of Plantations pioneers, Hoffman Park also has another tie to Plantation history. The park has the preserved spot where the first PAL, Police Athletic League was created in 1962. The program is now managed by the Plantation Athletic League. This first athletic field in the city was created by its citizens so the kids would have somewhere to play baseball. In addition to the preserved ball field, the park has many shade trees, open area for play, bench, and a picturesque white gazebo. The gazebo can be rented for weddings and special events. if you look deeper this park preserves the history of Plantation but it is also a nice place to just kick back a few minutes and enjoy nature.

Located near I-75, Emerald Estates Park is located just outside the gates of the Emerald Estates community in Weston, a neighborhood made of 607 single family homes. Emerald Estates Park has many amenities including a shade covered playground, basketball courts, exercise path, outdoor fitness equipment, lighted tennis courts, picnic shelters and grill. There is even a bike Fixit Repair Station. Dogs are allowed as long as leashed. During my visit I saw a lot of people throughout the park exercising, playing tennis, and at the playground. I walked on the paved fitness trail and tried out the the outdoor exercise equipment. While I worked out I could see all of the birds attracted by the water in the park. At the back of the park is an island filled with wood storks, a large wading bird that is considered threatened in the United States. There were also a lot of cormorants too. Not only is this park a great place to play, exercise, and cook out but it is also a wildlife sanctuary and a fantastic place to bird watch.
