I was SO impressed with the patience, kindness and professionalism shown by Armando, the staff person who assisted me. He made what could have been a very difficult task so much easier! I came in the door with a myriad of questions (all which were answered) and left knowing that I had come to the right place to do business!

Despite the immediate family expressing concerns that their loved one may not properly fit in the casket, the funeral home assured them she would. It was only discovered that she did not fit when she was removed from the hearse--at which point the casket lid would not close and was resting on her body, leaving her exposed to both the family's view and the rain during the service. Their grandmother was meant to have Hawaiian leis placed respectfully around her neck, but instead they were placed awkwardly on her arms in what appeared to be an attempt to hide the casket lid issue. The family had paid extra for a rain cover, which leaked badly. Rainwater soaked through onto the wicker casket, onto their loved one--who was already visible due to the lid issue--and onto every family member standing beneath it. Additionally, only half of the chairs that were paid for were set out. Those that were present were filled with rainwater, and no effort was made by staff to dry them or assist guests. The family was also supposed to receive fingerprints for memorial keepsakes, which were completely mishandled and rendered unusable. When these serious concerns were brought to management the following day, responsibility was barely acknowledged, and the compensation offered was insulting, given the magnitude of the failures. This was an already heartbreaking day that was made significantly worse by negligence and poor service. I strongly urge others to avoid this funeral home.

This was a weird experience. I mean, besides having to make arrangements after the death of your…read moreonly parent. But there were some extra odd elements, and my sister had the same thoughts when we discussed things after leaving so I know I didn't imagine it. It was kind of weirdly unprofessional. The woman we met with just didn't give off an air of someone who knew what she was doing or was familiar with stuff. She gave us her condolences when we entered, but then she spent most of the rest of our time there complaining about the software they make them use. Based upon what I saw I agree that something's off, either they're using crappy software or their computer system is outdated (could be both), but I really didn't need to hear her grumbling about it the whole time. My sister used the excuse of taking my toddler out for a bit of a walk because she was getting irritated by it. Their business model and services are sketchy. When we were looking for a place a few days ago this seemed the most reasonably priced. However, when we met with the representative yesterday the costs were different than what we'd seen online Saturday and what I looked up whilst we were sitting in the office with this woman. My sister was asking what all the stuff she was doing on the computer was because she was trying to understand what the discrepancy was, and I asked what the "package" was that she was setting us up with because there was a less expensive option on their website. Her answer? "That's when people itemize, and it ends up more expensive anyway." That just really doesn't make sense to me: Itemize what? If we don't need an urn, why can't we do the lesser package that doesn't include urn allowance? And when she mentioned the urn we said we didn't know if we'd need one, asking if we could choose one later if our other option didn't materialize, but apparently not--you have to select an urn then and there or you don't get one at all. No explanation as to why, much like our other questions. When my sister spoke to her Monday to make an appointment for the following day, she asked about an obituary and was told that they didn't provide that. Yet a "self serve" obituary was listed on the package she sold us, and she gave zero information about what that was or meant. I'd already found another place to do an obituary because they'd previously said they didn't provide one, but again, that was an item we didn't need in a package that was a bit more expensive than what their webpage was showing and all that just feels REAL bait-and-switch like. Filing fee and death certificates would be a separate cost anyway. Although we weren't really getting much from this woman I had a toddler with me and we just wanted to get out of there and decided a difference of $100 was not worth spending more time there and forcing answers from the person. They had us over a barrel anyway. I wouldn't recommend them, but I know options are limited and especially in times like this.

Paperwork/contract came via email for e-signature. Staff returned a phone with questions well after hours and were very kind and helpful. They answered questions, asked if we would like a moment of silence in respect before taking her body and said a prayer with the family. Could have not asked for a better experience. 10/10 recommend!

So the founder of Eugene aka Eugene himself is buried here along with his wife Mary aka Eugene and Mary. They were living here as outsiders with their kids for it was all Native American folks besides them. Eugene most have been very different back then. Also to note Whiteaker aka Oregon's first governor and his large family is buried here in a most unusual tomb aka most unusual tomb I have seen on Turtle Island aka North America and second only to my walkabout in Egypt. Whiteaker is what Eugene's funky and cool neighborhood Whiteaker aka the Whit is named after aka where I once ran a Mysore yoga program for a hot minute near the Red Barn. This cemetery is mysterious, beautiful, and enchanted in an amazing natural setting with nature and all the big trees like jonsi and alex.

I say all that to just share how surprised I am that I didn't know there was a Masonic cemetery in Eugene until about 10 years ago, and even though I know the Masons have not been involved in the cemetery for decades until recent years, I'm still surprised it never came up in a newsletter, discussion, meeting, or anything that I attended in Eugene or throughout the state. But they do tours of the Hope Abbey mausoleum on the last Sunday of every month, and since we had no special plans on Easter my mom and I took the baby on a walk through the cemetery. It was really interesting to see the mausoleum. It was made in Egyptian Revival style, as was popular at the time; mausoleum burials were en vogue at the time it was completed in 1914. The building was severely neglected for many years, but was added to the National Register of Historic Places in 1980 which I'm sure has helped in its restoration. There are still crypts available here (it was funny to see slips of tape with "available" written on them), and there are some that have been set aside for folks (I saw one with a name that was so familiar, and then I realized that it was the owners of the Eugene Foodies Facebook group). There's one entire section that is owned by the family that owns Thistledown, with placements from the early days of the abbey. The restoration of the place has been incredibly well done. The cemetery was established at the request of the city by Eugene Lodge #11. It was interesting to learn that the lodge did not have the "resources" to care for the cemetery, because as someone who parked cars at football games here for about 10 years as a member of the youth organization and having to turn over 65% of the proceeds to the lodge, I'm curious how that was possible but ok. It's been under the care of the Eugene Masonic Cemetery Association, which is unaffiliated with the Masonic fraternity, for about 30 years now. Given the age of the cemetery, you can't drive in the cemetery but there's parking in the neighborhood and lots of walking paths in the cemetery itself. Obviously it's a historic site; the oldest formally established in the city and it's one of the oldest historic sites in the county, incorporated in the same year Oregon gained statehood. Once upon a time family plots of 10 lots each were available for $15 ($517 in 2023 funds, which is still a major bargain). There are only a few in-ground spots available but the have a few cremation gardens here. When it opened there were no trees here but if you visit you'll see that's far from the case now. Landscaping is an important part of the restoration plan here and there's a focus on native plants, with over 100 species on site. There are some activities here like the opening of the mausoleum, and in October they've held a concert series called Music to Die For for several years. You can also do a self-guided walking tour of the place; there are guides in the cemetery or you may be able to find it on their website. When we were here we happened upon three Easter eggs, which cracked us up and couldn't have been a coincidence since it was Easter... but we also saw some folks jogging through the cemetery, a man reading, and others just wandering through. There are many notable Eugene residents buried here, like Skinner after whom the town is made; Oregon's first governor; early important folks affiliated with the university; and more recent prominent folks like Ruth Bascom, who was once the city's mayor (and whose son removed my gallbladder when I was a teen, #sixdegrees). If you're interested in history or looking for quiet place to meander, this could be a good spot.
