Can't believe I hadn't written a review! Wonderful food! I don't go there often (family heart disease history), but when I feel a need for smoked bbq, this is great! They deserve "Texas" in the name because the brisket is done absolutely right. Make sure you get some sausage too. Not fatty or overseaoned. Few days ago got some chili. You know what, they should not call that chili. They essentially serve you a bowlful of tender beef with chili seasoning! Incredible! Not surprisingly they have won many award state-wide. Excellent Texas style barbecue, with no frills, order at the counter and a server brings the order and drinks to your table. The dining area is small but adequate and all the staff were friendly and helpful. Come as you are, as it should be for a BBQ place, It looks like the bigger part of the business is bulk, buy the pound orders. I just tried this place for the first time, loved the ribs!! If you love a strong smoked flavor, this is the place for you! The BBQ sauce comes in the side, which I loved, as the smoked flavor was so good, I barely used any sauce! The Mac and cheese was decent as was the baked hash browns, but the hash browns were a little too "peppery" for my taste. Be aware this place does not have any indoor seating as of this post (April 2022) and is only open Thursday - Saturday. I would definitely return again! read more

Wow! Some of the best BBQ I've ever had. Stopped on our way to Detroit from Hillsdale. Seemed questionable from the outside, not many cars, but smelled delicious as soon as we got out of the car. Small location with just a few tables. Huge menu, several different types of meat to choose from. Various BBQ sauces on the table. I got the beef brisket and it was divine, highly recommended! I finally got by here when they were open (dang limited hours). And loved it!! Brisket was delish and the hot link was good, Pork was yummy too. Their sauces are vinegar based (which I don't generally care for) and were very good. We even got some of the BigUns sauce to use at home :-) . But the star, for me, was the Texas Chili! Great BBQ in Michigan! I've tried the great pit masters' fare throughout Texas and am considerably blessed to have had the opportunity (The Salt Lick, Franklin's, Central Market, etc). What an incredible surprise to find true Texas brisket in Michigan! I can count on one hand how many good Texas briskets I've found outside of Texas. (The one thing they all have in common is that the owner is from Texas.) Here, the ribs and brisket are incredible! The ribs are tender and the brisket succulent. The owner is a Texas-native and uses the type of rub you find around Dallas - a little sweeter than rubs from other areas of the US and even other parts of Texas. It caramelizes during the cook to create a sweet, meat-candy of a bark. I ended up buying sauce and rub to take home. Keeping with Texas tradition, this place is low key and only open for lunch. It's actually situated in an industrial building. Don't let the humble location fool you; there's a pit master inside perfecting his craft for your hungry ass! Nice guy too! Great guy! He was more than accommodating to talk with me about cooking low and slow, how he cooks, and everything else BBQ. I even walked away learning something new about wood. That's right, wood! It's small inside, though they said there is more seating to the rear if you want to walk past (through?) the kitchen. It just didn't seem inviting. Trash cans sitting by the counter was another nice touch. Counter service only here at West Texas BBQ. Portions were smaller than I expected. Cans of soda or pre-bottled iced tea suspiciously without labeling. I don't feel like I got what I paid for. I left hungry, though I ordered one of the larger meals, which was pricier than anticipated. I simply don't see what garnered the high ratings. It's just not all that. read more

OMG! Run don't walk! This place is real Texas BBQ. My brother and I were on our way to K'zoo from Detroit and found this gem. I had 2 meat platter with Turkey and Brisket. The turkey had a nice smoked flavor and it was tender and juicy. The Brisket was some of the best I've ever had and I have been to Texas a few times. The prices are not cheap but the way I look at it is that you get what you pay for. Both cuts of meat were high quality. I shall return! read more

They sampled the ribs! They were moist, smoky, and so tender you don't need teeth. That is serious bbq! I'm not usually a fan of brisket, but this was really good. We liked it so much we ate there then got ribs carryout since we live two hours away. I also got to-go for a friend at work who loves brisket. You order and pay at counter then they bring the food to the table. You can eat inside or out at picnic tables. Not real fancy, but has a real Texas vibe. Portions are generous. I was working in the area and it was suggested we try West Texas BBQ. I'm a lover of all things bbq, I mean look at me I don't shy away from the smoked meats. All of that said the food was good I ordered the 2 meat platter (10oz ) with brisket and hot link sausage and a small side of mac n cheese. The brisket had great flavor and paired with a mixture of their hot and mild bbq sauces really brought out the smoke flavors. All in all a good experience and would definitely return and try something different. read more

We stumbled upon this fantastic little joint on one of our camping excursions. The kids and I shared a full rack of baby back ribs, there was so much meat on these ribs That the 3 of us didn't even finish them. They were tender and flavorful. Per my 8 year old, "I don't need sauce Mom, these are yummy!! The lemonade tasted just like my Grans! Definitely homemade!! We had a great visit and the kids loved to see all the big smokers!! First, let me tell you that I have been going to West Texas for the past 6 years monthly for lunch. West Texas used to be the best food at a great value. But now it seems that since people know about West Texas(best BBQ in Michigan). things have changed. The prices have went up and the portions have went down. It will cost you $12 for a small sandwich, very small side and a drink. I've been able to stomach the price increase and portion decrease until I visited today and they are now serving their top notch meats on top of a store bought bun. What a joke. The home made ciabatta they used to serve was the best and made you feel like the price was OK because the food product was so good. Now I feel like I could get this from a fast food joint. They lost a monthly customer today. I will probably only visit once a year now. Good news is that their meat is still delicious. I would say others are also noticing because the lines are nothing like they used to be. Too bad, they had a good thing going. read more

West Texas has earned their place as a great place to get bbq in an area not normally associated with great bbq. BUT, their recent decision to jack up prices and now NOT offer the wonderful fresh baked bread they used on their sandwiches is a real bummer. All that wonderful bbq on a cheap factory bun. If you want the fresh baked bread you now get a much smaller roll on the side when ordering a platter meal. Almost $15 for a pork sandwich, can of pop (no refills) and larger potato salad side (because the regular size is tiny as a salad dressing cup). Oh, yeah the sandwich was $1 off today so it would normally be $16. I can see going to a sit down place for that much. Hope we don't loose a good thing here, but I've seen it happen over and over. Now, WTBBQ is no longer a given when planning lunch, too bad as we order several times a year for work functions too. read more

The food is good, but not mind blowing. I have eaten there a handful of times and the only thing that is consistent is that they normally screw up my order or over charge me. For example, your supposed to get 2 rolls with the large platter, which my wife and I can split, but it's hard to split when there is only one roll. They have left out the sauce (huge deal)!! Just today I had to go back in for the pickles, onions and peppers that are supposed to come with the platter. I have gotten the smaller side dishes even after confirming the size and the price and paying for the larger one. Another thing that bothers me, is the fact they leave some foods such as brownies uncovered and right on the front counter where kids can touch them or someone can cough or sneeze on them not to mention the flys. I am from Texas and I love BBQ. Excited when I found this place. I tried 3 different things. Brisket, pulled pork, and hot links. I loved the hot links. They were the highlight of the stop by far. The pulled pork came in second and the brisket a distant 3rd. The staff was very friendly and courteous. As wowed as I was by the links, I was just as disappointed in the brisket. Couldn't put my finger on exactly why it was disappointing, but suspect it has something to do with how they push the brisket through the stall while cooking. Just kind of bland. I love BBQ! And I've tried it everywhere from nationally famous places like Corky's and Charles Vargas Rendezvous in Tennessee to Famous Dave's chain BBQ! And I've got to say that West Texas tops them all! I'm all about the Brisket! It's super lean and has great flavor! They have awesome Texas Style (no beans) Chili as well! You need to try it!
