Second time there. First experience was much better. This time, we went near closing time on a Saturday, which was probably a mistake. By that time, the brisket was no longer pink and needed a knife for cutting. The turkey was cold and way too salty. I think the turkey would be much better shaved or pulled rather than sliced so thickly. Good rolls. Love the thin, vinegar-based Bubba Sauce. Our first trip, the brisket was much better. Hadn't been there for a long time-it's a little out of the way for me-but I had a craving for brisket. Still the same, not much to look at, but when you walk it you can tell it is a place for serious eating. The tables were full. The place is only open 11-2 during the week, so everyone there is making time to be there. Decided to get a pound of brisket to take home and a large baked beans. The folks behind the counter are quick and friendly. They know you are in a hurry. The ride home was torture. The brisket was cooked perfectly. Tender, not dried out like some places. This was the best BBQ I've had outside of Memphis, the pulled pork sandwich was great (Memphis style with slaw on top). It was extremely messy but so good. The only thing I did not like was the crusty ciabatta bun--a softer bread like Texas toast would have made it easier to eat. What's to say. West Texas just doesn't live up to the hype and is definitely not the best BBQ in Michigan - I can think of two places better and Im sure there's plenty more. Firstly, prices are on the high side for what you get. The sandwiches are served on a store bought generic bun and does not complement the meat. The meat is good and this is where West Texas does shine. However, I personally find the sauces to be fairly lackluster overall and the pickles/onions/jalepenos do not make up for this. All said a lunch will run you over ten bucks for just a small sandwich and a can of pop. 3 stars as I would eat here again but not something to go out of your way for. read more

I have been going here for prime rib Friday for a long time.They have some of the best bbq that I have had in Michigan, that is for sure! It is worth the drive if you have the time! My winners would be the brisket , smoked turkey or prime rib sandwich. The prime rib is only available on Friday. I would pass on the riblet sandwich too much sauce. read more

One of the best BBQ places we've eaten at in the area. Had ribs, brisket, and pulled pork -- all were delicious. Ribs and brisket had nice amount of bark and were tasty enough to eat without any sauce, although there were 3 good sauces to choose from on each table. Beans had large chunks of pork and did not disappoint. Staff was extremely friendly and asked several times if we needed anything and if we were enjoying the meal. Most Certainly not the best BBQ. I have had BBQ from all over the US and wanted this to be better than it was. I have gone multiple times thinking they had a bad day smoking the meat. I have been in BBQ competitions and this is not what other people are winning for, it needs to be a balance of smoke and meat flavor. The only problem I have is that all you taste is thick heavy smoke in the meat. So much so that you can't taste anything else, or even enjoy the texture. The sides are good, but as a BBQ place there are better around. The smoke flavor is so intense that I get headaches every time I have eaten there, which is three times for a fair assessment. If they toned down the smoke and found a good wood balance I would gladly come back. I will try again in a few months, I really want to like this BBQ. read more

Went to West Texas BBQ to see if it was as good as was written up on MLive's "Best Barbeque in Michigan" contest and I have to say it's damn good! I had a big platter with brisket and hot link sausage w/ baked beans. The brisket had a great crust and a huge smoke ring. Tender, cut with a fork meat that didn't need sauce. The hot link was a full flavored smoky sausage with not a ton of heat. More black pepper heat than hot pepper heat. The beans, although served cold, were excellent with chunks of pork mixed in. Served with a couple of rolls that were indistinct, I made little sandwiches with them. Others in my party had the pulled pork, the smoked turkey (which we all thought was really good and needed NO sauce, and the polish sausage. Also, had was the mac and cheese which was a home-style baked mac that was ok from what I was told. The three sauces served were very good. The big 'uns (carolina vinegar-style), the mild (sweet to me), and the hot (again not blazingly hot by any means but a very good balance of sweet and spicy).Total of $13 bucks for 10 oz. of meat, two rolls and butter, onions, pickles, and jalapenos, a side of beans, and I got a bottle of water. A pretty good deal if you ask me. Seating is in front of the counter for smaller tables and towards the back of the building there are long picnic type tables as well as a long table with regular chairs. A bit spartan and you sit with their backstock right next to you but I liked it other than being a bit drafty on a cool day. Older country music plays overhead and was not intrusive to our conversation. I was impressed with the food they are serving here and will definitely be back!! read more

I took my brother in law for his birthday Saturday morning for lunch. I'm from frankenmuth and we came almost two hours to try Michigander best bbq. It was the best food I ever had in my life. We got a giant platter of meat and sides to try it all. The meat just falls apart and the taste is something out of concept. Mac and cheese was so good and chili was a true texas chili. Justin gave us the tour and background and made us feel like we were at home. His service is perfect. You can tell he caters well since every detail was remembered to make take home leftovers just like when we were there. I can't say enough good about this place. Everything was outstanding and I will travel back as often as possible. I won't waste my time going to these production, so called bbq. It ruined me. I can't go to those places anymore. went this last Saturday with my family. thought we would try it after seeing it promoted on the TV program Under the Radar. The brisket meat was what one would expect and probably as good as a number of restaurants. offering a similar menu in Lansing, MI. The side dishes of baked beans, collard greens etc.. were ok but not outstanding. Portions of the meat and especially the side dishes were smaller than any of the competitor restaurants I have been to in Lansing and when traveling in the southern states and the prices were about thirty per cent higher. Don't really know what all the hype is about. Prices are high, portions small. Service is slow...usually pretty busy for lunch. The pork shoulder was all dark meat. Corn bread so-so. I have tried a few different menu items and the only item I have been totally satisfied with is the prime rib on Friday. Also, frequent mistakes on carry out orders make the experience frustrating. The best food in town! I have been ordering the 6oz platter for lunch a couple times a month. I always get the brisket and turkey then alternate the pork and sausage. The meat is always tender, juicy and flavorful. As good as it is on its own I add the Big Uns BBQ Sauce to the meat. This sauce is a perfect pairing for the smoky meat. The platter comes with a roll and sliced onions, pickles and jalapeños. The presentation is straightforward and the atmosphere is relaxed. I highly recommend the food and a visit for a true Texas BBQ experience. I would be hard pressed to find another local treasure like this. read more

The restaurant is also very authentic. I had pulled pork even though this place is more Texas style and it was great. I also had Mac & cheese, slaw and baked baked beans.
