THAT SAID - this place being my first stop in Vermont really set the stage for pretty much the total opposite of everything I'm accustomed to (and next several days in the state passed the vibe check too!). It was wonderful to see so many healthy options inclusive of all types of dietary needs, as well as wide variety of locally sourced produce, ingredients, packaged goods, sauces, and more. Flowers/bouquets for sale in various parts of the store is a lovely touch! Had to smile each time I passed them. Everyone was so friendly and seemed brimming with enthusiasm and joy each time one person ran into another. I don't know if everyone *really* knew each other, but they all gave off an energy that they were so happy to cross paths and were all old friends. This being my first stop upon crossing state lines had me in such an inspired mindset for the weekend I even made a little walkthrough tour TikTok, and one day hopefully soon it will adventure its way out of the drafts. Oh! Thank you for showcasing local artists and events outside, too. And having a community garden?! I could go on and on...

They have a huge book selection that dominates the area where it could be useful for seating and more accommodating patrons. They do have a counter area where you can sit. Just imagine a book store meets a coffee shop that also has delicious looking sweet treats (chai donuts was what caught my eye). Telling my wife those little bits about it made her eyes light up with excitement! We showed up and thankfully the major rush already passed and snagged a parking spot. Be mindful it is a small place with minimal parking. We walked inside and looked all around, my wife jumped to the books to browse (pictures of those can be seen on the Antidote Books listing). She did have lots of time to browse, because they only had one barista taking orders then also making them. This would be the only negative I would have to say of this place, I felt bad that it seemed the worker had too much to do. It resulted in quite a wait and I could see them losing some business during rushes from this. I know the space is small but having someone take orders and one making drinks could help. Despite this I still feel they deserve five stars! I got their Golden Sun Milk Iced Latte and my wife got their Iced Matcha Latte. Both were very tasty, expertly made for sure. Also we were lucky enough to get the very last chai donut, and it had a rose frosting. It tasted like gingerbread because the chai spices, wish we could have had more than one. A spot we would definitely return to and try more drinks and bites! No books that we wanted to buy but glad to have found a combo coffee shop/book store. Stop here and give it a try!

I told the person who helped me at 1A just that, thereby establishing the stakes at the outset. He didn't seem too worried. I quickly saw why. 1A has the best coffee I've had in Southern VT. And it's not even close. I'm a black iced coffee drinker. I prefer iced coffee (brewed hot and chilled) to cold brew (steeped at room temp or colder for a while) for technical reasons, but many places only offer cold brew these days. 1A offered both. Bonus point. The cold coffee was already stored in jars in a small fridge. I forget the price, but it seemed fair. The iced coffee was very good. Smooth. Very drinkable. No aftertaste. I've had the sense that the taste of other Southern VT Coffee spots is perhaps affected my mineral rich water. I did not have that sense at 1A. A couple of other selling points for 1A. 1A roasts their own beans. That always demonstrates a commitment to the craft for me. They're the only area place I've noticed that roasts their beans. In addition, in the best possible way, the person who helped me was a coffee nerd. I am too. He wants to try as many lattes in as many states as he can. He had a map showing all of his visits. I finally feel like I found a place in Southern VT that really cares about the craft of coffee. It's my new spot when I visit from CT.

They also offer BYO deli sandwiches & wraps, hot sandwiches, & wraps salads, loaded spuds, wings, and fried foods. The place is order at the counter and there are a few tables inside nearby. There is also outside seating area (on nicer weather days). I've stopped by here twice over the past month. On the first visit, I got here around 1:30 pm, but unfortunately the grill & kitchen closed early. I was able to purchase some baked goods on the counter including a cinnamon roll and a strawberry cheese danish. I was also given an extra cheese danish at no extra charge. On the second visit, I arrived here around 9:15 am and ordered breakfast takeout. I ordered a BYO French Omelette ($12 plus tax) with baked tofu and Swiss cheese, with tater tots and Portuguese muffin. My ordered was ready to in about 10 minutes. I grabbed packets of ketchup and hot sauce on the way out. I already picked up my coffee nearby before stopping here. The omelette was a fluffy folded egg filled with tofu and melted Swiss cheese. The golden tater tots were hot and crisp. The sweet Portuguese muffin was toasted and buttered. Overall, this breakfast was fairly filling to eat and I was all set for the day ahead of driving over Hogback to NY.
