I was so surprised by our room. We were doing a road trip on the cheap, and I picked the Westcliff Lodge simply for the low price and expected a dive. Our king room was enormous! The balcony looked out into a beautiful area with trees and was a lovely way to wind down. The staff were all incredibly helpful and friendly, I loved that they gave us a map with all of the local places to get food and none of those places were chain restaurants. We will absolutely stay here again next time we go through! read more

Okay! This review is going to be super thorough because I could not find any other reviews on their glamping rooms on TripAdvisor, yelp, Wanderlust, or their website! This is specifically for glamping - not the actual rooms at the hotel. The great: The glamping rooms are two tents off to the side of the property. They overlook the river and have their own private little trails off a main trail. You can see the hotel from your tent, it's not a long walk at all. The tent itself is awesome. Adequately warm at night and a nice breeze during the day (or crazy winds - it's Hood River after all. I found those winds relaxing and the tent didn't blow around too much). You can sit at the edge of the cliff and watch the kiteboarders and sailboats float around. They look adorable from so high up. I saw a bald eagle for the first time EVER! There were also tons of what looked like golden eagles flying around above us which was cool. Lots of wildlife here. The shower is outdoors. It's not exactly a solar shower because it's run with propane. I can't stress enough how cool it was. Just look at the pictures, seriously. They provide soap and towels like any hotel. I liked the conditioner. The shower is maybe 20ft. from the tent. It's shared with the other tent out there. That tent is maybe uhhhh 40ft. away? I'm pretty bad with distance, sorry. You are provided with a 5 gal bluey of delicious Bull Run water. They also provide you with a cooler to use! It's a cute little vintage-y looking Coleman. You should bring your own ice. There was a cute little table with two chairs, 3 cute LED lanterns, a dresser, a mirror hanging on a coat stand, a chest at the end of the bed, and two bedside tables. My partner remarked that it's the first hotel he's stayed at that didn't have a Bible in the drawers, so if you're into that kinda stuff you better bring your own. Also, it's missing a trashcan, make sure you have some trash bags with you. That would be the only thing I think needs to be added (actually might need some flashing on the guy wires outside to mark them as well). .There is no fire pit, which is fine because there's not really a safe place for a fire. The area in general seems pretty flammable. It could use one of those little bbq pit things though. But, there is a grill on the property. Bring a camp stove if you want to cook at your spot. Things that may deter some people: You have to walk to the parking lot to use the porta-potty. This was fine with us, I'm used to festivals and hiking and whatever. I don't really care where I use the restroom as long as one is available! Just know that it is not at your camp and you will have to walk to it (and bring your own toilet paper if 1-ply bugs you). Other people staying at the hotel hike along the main trail out to your camp area. The only time this bothered me is when I was getting out of the shower and like 10 people were walking by. I was wrapped up in a towel of course, but still kinda weird. But, not their fault, they had no idea, and the trail is open to everyone. Just be aware it's not completely private if you enjoy being nude or something (it's still a hotel, don't be so obscene!). There's no electricity. You're camping, it's fine. Lots of bugs in the tent the first night. Had spiders on my face maybe. Bugs live outside so it's to be expected. Although they provide you with a lock for your tent, it doesn't seem to be that great of a deterrent if someone wanted to steal your stuff. Although, it seems highly unlikely that your stuff would get taken. Not something we worried about at all and I think only used the lock once. It's a 'biner lock and you pass it through the zippers of the netting of the tent. The actual canvas tent is bolted down, but not the mesh stuff. So somebody could probably just yank on the mesh real hard and come in underneath it if they really wanted to. I've never locked a tent while camping before so I didn't care about it this time either. I had really bad cell service. That's fine. I was on vacation! If you care about this...well you shouldn't. You're camping! Deal with it! In summary: We L-O-V-E-D our stay here. I feel like I've sounded complain-y in this review but that was not my intention at all. I just wanted to write something really detailed so people know what to expect. This would be a perfect vacation for a couple. Super cute and romantic and just everything great. The tent was BEAUTIFUL, the view from the tent was BEAUTIFUL and I felt relaxed and happy for the first time in a long time. A lot of the time we just laid around in the bed, read books, drank delicious beer, and marveled at how great all of it was. We will definitely be back again and probably this summer. That's one of the only reasons I didn't want to write this review - I don't want people to steal the room from us! my girlfriend, and I stayed here last night and we had a great time. The view was fantastic, and the staff was very nice; we weren't even bothered the next morning when we were 30min late from checking out. There's even a nice 18 year old cat that graces the front office. If i found myself in Hood River again I would stay here. -1.5 miles from the city center -private setting -excellent rooms -smoking allowed on the patio as long as you keep the back door shut. read more

We stayed here over the weekend. We were pleasantly surprised. The room was spotless and very clean and it was obvious that the staff and owners care about this property. The shower is amazing w/ a huge rainfall shower head. Beds were comfy and the linens smelled really clean. Private balcony w/ an amazing view. Room was spotlessly clean. At check in, we were given a $50 gift certificate for a variety of restaurants. $50! I mean how amazing is that. We ate at Full Sail that very night and it was amazing. My only suggestion is the carpet powder that is used when the rooms are cleaned. The smell is very strong and overpowering. We opened the front door and the deck door and it aired out pretty good, unfortunately it still gave me a pretty bad headache. We had our service dog w/ us so maybe we were put in a "dog room" so that is what the smell was about? Not sure. My only complaint is the flooring. You cannot walk on it barefoot, it feels dirty and will make your feet dirty. It's just time to be replaced, I'm sure the owners will in time. We would recommend this place! read more

Love, love, LOVE this place! If you are headed to Hood River, you won't find a better location. Vagabond has THEE most comfortable beds I have EVER slept in anywhere! Loved staying here! The rooms are recently renovated or new, but the area surrounding the buildings is covered with flowers and large trees. Lots of picnic tables and areas to sit and enjoy the view. Having stayed in hood river many times, I highly recommend the Westcliff Lodge over any other place. read more

Westcliff is outstanding!!! I don't think I have ever been so pleasantly surprised by a hotel. We rented a king room with a river balcony and could not have been happier. The rooms are so clean and spacious (we have a 6 month old who travels with all kinds of extra gear including a pack n play). The view from our balcony was so beautiful and it was so relaxing to have a place to sit out while she naps or plays. Within a 5 minute drive to all the breweries and restaurants in town. Such beautiful common grounds. Can't say enough good things and we will definitely be back!! read more

We had business to attend to in White Salmon across the river. My broad says I know a joint we can stay in you'll love. So's I'm up for that, and we hops in the boiler and over the river we go. Woulda gone through the woods too, but there weren't any along the way. She was right, as usual. They accommodated us and our two dogs without a hitch. People who don't have dogs are miss'in out. They let cha know when undesirables are near and keep you warm on cold nights. Three dog night right? Anyway, I digress. The room was very clean, the bed was good, a partial view of the big Columbia River, plenty of hot water, the grounds were very well taken care of and fun with the Xmas lights illuminated. Some folks will always find something to cry about, real or imagined. Perfection is just an illusion or a dream you have when you've soaked up too much eel juice. This joint is a wonderful place to stay. If you aren't a dumb bunny, next time you're over that way stay there, check it out, the Hammer would never lie to a pally. That's the crop. read more

Very friendly and accommodating! They have several different room options and Janelle took her time to find us the perfect room for our budget / needs. I was reluctant to stay in a room that was pet friendly but it was super clean and no dog smell. I'm very picky when it comes to cleanliness and they nailed it! This is not a 5 Star fancy hotel with large high-def TVs and heated floors. It's a rustic lodge that has charm, amazing views of the river and they actually give you a KEY for your room instead of a card, which I prefer. We liked the room so much we wanted to stay a second night but unfortunately, it was already booked. I recommend room #64 but please don't stay there, we will be returning and don't want it occupied! Great hotel with beautiful gigantic trees surrounding it. Our room was big and spacious with a view of the courtyard. It was clean and housekeeping was very attentive. The only downfall was the early Saturday wake-up from housekeeping wanting to clean our room. We were still sleeping at 8:30am and the room didn't get cleaned later on. That's a bit early for a room cleaning, at least for us. read more

Front desk staff were extremely nice, checkout was a breeze, and we called a few times with questions about dining locations and ice machine, all interactions were friendly with accurate information provided. Decided to stay local while I had some work done at my house in Hood River. Booked this via Expedia... I thought I was booking the condos next to the Columbia Gorge Hotel and so when I pulled up to this hotel I was NOT happy. From the outside, it is not very appealing. I would never drive by and think I should stay here. THANK GOODNESS I booked online because once I saw my room I was absolutely thrilled. Beautifully decorated and so CLEAN CLEAN CLEAN. Huge room with very tasteful touches... towel art and a lovely little personal deck. I had stayed next door at the very prestigious Columbia Gorge Hotel the previous night and not had a very good experience.. This hotel is far superior. Staff was very friendly on check in and check out. I will definitely recommend this as one of the best places to stay in Hood River. read more

I stayed here after our local friends suggested this place to us. the staff was friendly, It's a great old school motel with excellent views of the river and the rolling hills..The place was clean and even though I was here when the nice owner got murdered.I still felt comfortable and enjoyed my stay here despite the horrific and very rare incident. I stayed in the newer part that was a two story near the water with a well kept grounds. The next day I went to the fancy hotel next to it at the Columbia Gorge hotel that was 280 a night and I felt it was over price and you got a better view and service at the vegabond that had people on family vacations for 95 dollars for a double and they aloud my small dog to stay with us for that price. The coffee was in the office but obviously they closed down that part but one of the owners gave us a dollar to go next store to get coffee..How nice is that after a tragedy? Vegabond also in the past has donated rooms to travels down on their luck a place to stay. Hoodriver is not known for crime and this place is not your flea bag or a roach motel or even the Bait's motel..it's a nice family motel and I would really come here again after the investigation. my prayers go to the staff and the family over at the Vegabond . read more

I didn't even stay here, but my experience with the staff on the phone was so bad, I can't imagine every staying here. A group of friends are doing a get away weekend, and my fiancee and I needed a cheap place to crash. We're taking a late flight into Portland and wouldn't be there until 1am or so. The guy on the phone says "Wow. Why so late?" I ask him what does he mean? "Well, we DO like to get some sleep, you know. Can't you come earlier?" First off, this is a motel. Its a cheap place to catch some sleep. Do they just not fill rooms after midnight? What the hell is up with that?! Either way, I'm glad we found another place and will never stay at this location. read more

The staff here was hyper-friendly and very welcoming. My room was clean, comfortable and didn't smell. The bathroom was small, but totally fine. For a cheap, roadside motel, the Vagabond Lodge was a great value. My only complaint is that the windows don't have blackout shades, so my room wasn't as dark as I would have liked. read more

We are not usually people to call out other yelpers but Ashley H below could not be more off about this place. First off this is a lodge, in Hood River, at a very affordable rate. It is not the W in downtown Chicago. If you set your expectations appropriately then this place is ideal when visiting Hood River. We spent a little extra for a river view and it was totally worth it. The rooms are old but in a quaint type of way. The beds are comfortable, they have free wifi and lots of channels (on TVs that are probably two decades old but who cares...you didn't come to the Gorge to be inside watching tv). The Vagabond was significantly less than other places we found in the area and for what we paid we were more than satisfied with what we got. Highly recommended. read more

We just stayed at the Vagabond Lodge for 3 nights and enjoyed it immensely - you can't beat the value, the setting, or the service! Three of us (2 + baby) had booked a suite, while 2 more had booked a regular double room. When we arrived, we found the suite so roomy, we combined reservations from the second night on. (The double room was also very large and comfortable, but we didn't need the extra space after all.) The suite was a private cottage attached to one other unit, and had a full living room/dining area, with a queen bed, a sleeper sofa, a desk, a small table and chair set, and a tv. The kitchen opened onto the living area, and had a full size refrigerator, dishwasher, oven/stove, microwave, and coffee maker - plus a full set of dishes and cookware. A small hallway lead to a full bathroom, and to the large private bedroom (which was the size of a big hotel room) with an adjoining second bath equipped with a jacuzzi tub. This is all to say that the suites are enormous (my guess is 750-800 square feet), and can easily accommodate 6 adults (or, in our case, 4 adults and a very busy toddler). Indeed, this place is not fancy or high-brow by any means - anyone who is expecting that for $105 (yes, the suites start at $105 a night, and the rooms are even less!) needs a reality check. However, the rooms are immaculately clean, they smell good (quite rare for an older property), and they are very well kept. The staff is incredibly friendly, as are the fellow travelers. Now on to the biggest reason to stay at Vagabond - the grounds are unreal! From the front, it looks like a few simple 1950s hotel rooms right off the highway. Take two steps beyond the office, and you find yourself in a Columbia River Gorge haven - it's like having a hotel settled in the midst of the most serene and beautiful campground. You are surrounded by huge trees and meandering paths, and once you wander to the back of the property, you are treated by breathtaking views of the river. Our suite felt like a little cabin tucked away in the woods for our own private retreat - not once were we reminded that the highway was maybe 100 yards from us (we couldn't see it or hear it). So, especially for the unbelievable price, the Vagabond will be our first choice for the Hood River area from now on. And as for any safety concerns anyone might have, we felt incredibly safe, so much so that I wandered between our unit and the office alone several times after 9:00 p.m. - freaky and terrible incidents can happen anywhere, and this place feels like anything but a magnet for crime. Our hearts go out to the family and friends affected by the recent tragedy. For anyone considering a stay, rest assured, Vagabond feels nothing but peaceful and serene. read more

If you are on a budget and just want a quick stay to go snowboarding.....Vagabond is very cheap and not too far from the mountain and right on the lake. It's your regular motel, but it's actually clean, has AC, microwave, and fridge. I'm not into cheap motels but this place wasn't too bad. If you want a nice romantic getaway for two then don't stay here....you'll be disappointed. read more

Small, cheap place just off the highway, about 5 minutes drive from downtown Hood River. It's on a hill overlooking the river, and the river view rooms have great views. That being said, we stayed in a non-view room since we booked last minute, and were lucky just to get a room in Hood River for the night we were there. It was $87 with tax, which I would consider too expensive in some places for what we got, but okay in Hood River, especially for this particular weekend. Check-in just after 3pm was quick and friendly. Our room had a queen bed, which wasn't terribly comfortable (we both woke up with slight pain), but wasn't horrible. There was a small TV that we never turned out, so cannot comment on channels. Small fridge, old microwave, old phone also in the room. Also a small table. An extra light somewhere in the room would have been nice. The bathroom was a decent size, and the shower was of good size. Air conditioning is window unit, which can cover up the sometimes loud highway noise associated with the non-view rooms at the front of the property (rooms with views, further back, shouldn't have highway noise issues). The hotel said they had free wifi but I never picked up a signal in our room...not even a weak one. For a night or so, it's a great steal if you don't mind being just out of downtown. Longer stays...I think I would need a bit more comfort. But, I'm spoiled by my business travel ;) read more

Really great price, considering most other places in town were almost double when my boyfriend and I stayed here. Everything was clean and the check in process was super efficient. Every employee we met was incredibly kind and offered great advice on their favorite things to do in town. Love this place! Stayed here with some friends last weekend to run a trail race and I can't wait to go back for another visit. Clean, spacious rooms, friendly staff, affordable and seriously amazing views. We rented a suite with an enormous balcony with 5 star views of the river and the beautiful hotel grounds. As someone who travels frequently with a dog I also appreciate that they are dog friendly. The Vagabond will be the first place I try to book next time I visit the gorge. read more

Hidden Gem! Don't be fooled by the aging exterior! This little hidden piece of heaven is a wonderful spot to relax! My daughter and I do a yearly, overnight trip for our birthdays and Mother's Day and looked for a new spot this year to stay. I'm so glad I took a chance on reserving at the Westcliff. We stayed in room 66, an ADA room, which was huge in size, extra large bathroom, outdoor patio with seating, large dining table, very comfortable beds, all the amenities of home!!! The best part is the View Point in the back of the property! Breathtaking views, seating, fire pit and plenty of space for your 4 legged fur babies to explore! I loved this place. Here's why: It took me a step back in time. We stayed in the original, retro (and pet-friendly) rooms with a nice view of the Columbia River. The rooms were solidly built back in the day, and therefore quiet. The decor is wildly outdated, but the bed was comfy. The room smelled stale, but nothing opening the windows couldn't fix, and it was clean. The hot water runs out fast so don't plan on a long, luxurious shower (we shouldn't be doing that anyways these days)... Doesn't sound like a lot to love, eh? But there's something to it that is quaint, and the staff is really, really friendly, and the grounds are well-maintained and beautiful; there's a play area for kids with a groovy swing set; there's a large area to play with your dog too. If you don't have a dog, they have three newer buildings with updated rooms, (but I'm a sap for the nostalgic). They also have two sites tucked away in a wooded area that offer "glam camping" in the summer, and there's even a vacation rental house on the property with a view all the way back to Portland. You can call them and ask about both. Their rates are super reasonable! It's just far enough out of town to feel secluded, but close enough to easily enjoy all that Hood River has to offer. I'm completely happy with my experience and would revisit the Vagabond Lodge. read more

Originally I booked the highest price room because it had a view but I downgraded to mid price room since we would only be staying overnight so a great view wasn't necessary. Since we arrived after dark we couldn't really see anything out the window so imagine our surprise when in the morning we drew back the curtain to an AWESOME view of the river and the immaculate grounds! The room decor was a bit outdated but clean, the beds were comfortable and the bathroom was clean and shower was great! All in all great place to stay! If we go through that area again we will definitely be staying again. read more

The room itself was spacious and we had a "view" room, which was nice. The location was easy to access and close enough to anything you may need. There are no on-site amenities and they had things like hair dryers and irons rather than having small coffee makers in each room. TV was super small and the room was stiflingly warm (March) because heaters didn't work properly. Not even opening the single window helped get fresh air in. Probably should put in ceiling fans because I can imagine it's awful in warmer months. Should update their book to have more relevant information about restaurants and activities. Surprised that they had no little hiking trails on site either. Not much in the way of soundproofing, can tell it's older. If you get a good deal and don't expect too much from this place you'll be okay. Staff was nice, but I'd never return. read more

Went down to Hood River with some buddies to do the Post Canyon Super D race and picked the Vagabond as an affordable and convenient lodging option. Gotta say, I was very impressed with the rooms. They clearly take pride in keeping them neat and tidy, there were always fresh towels, and it was just a good quiet and scenic spot. Sure there were some things that could be better. The WiFi wasn't great and the rooms themselves aren't all that big, but for the price it was good value and we stayed comfortably and were well rested each day for our event. read more

Our December one night visit was great. We arrived after dark (sunset at 4:15 after all :-) with a reservation made online. We got a very good rate for a large room with a king size bed in a newer wing of the motel. Great bed, microwave, coffee, fridge, dining table w/2 chairs, real glassware (for H2O & for wine!), and even a tiny patio w/2 chairs (would be nice in summer). Good linens, soap & shampoo: everything just right, and there is an outdoor grassy courtyard. Parking is distributed around the various wings, so all units have a side away from parking lots. The beds were comfortable. Best surprise was the dual shower head in the bath room.
