Steve and Cindy are some of the best people out there to look out for your car. As an Audi owner, I had to be a bit selective with who works on my car to ensure that it's in good health. I can't say enough great things about them. Cindy is so sweet. She is also so helpful and making sure that she can get me an appointment that fits my hectic schedule. Steve. Man, he's a pro at what he does. Not only are his prices fair but he's great at what he does. He seriously goes above and beyond to be great to his customers. I needed an oil change before a long business trip north and I couldn't manage to find another business to do the job after or before work -- which I 100% understand. I feel terrible for doing this because I thought everyone who helped me as Western Auto was very nice (hence the delay in updating the review); however I recently took my car into another shop which reminded me I've been meaning to update my review for years now. I actually ended up quite dissatisfied with my experience.... First, it turns out that they did not install the windshield wipers properly (or installed the wrong size?) and they almost fell off the first time I used them while driving in heavy rain on a very busy road. I had to pull over on the side of the road to reattach them. After that, the wipers would still usually start to slide off if using them on high settings. Second, the dent they fixed on my bumper looked great, and while the paint wasn't a complete match, it was close enough- I can't take issue with that. What I do have a problem with is the spot on the car they apparently used to "patch test" the paint colors. It's a conspicuous location and will probably affect resale value for my car. Point blank The owner Steve is shady, he will take your money and do poor work or charge you more for his mistakes fixing your car. He told me he could rebuild my engine, I paid him more than half up front 1750. When he said it was complete 9 MONTHS LATER, I came in and he could not get the engine to start or turn over at all, his specs were off and the Crank would not turn!! He then had to rebuild it again (should be at his expense) and then charges me another 1500 and told me I will get charged 45 dollars a day I can't come get it. I didn't have another 1500 as I only thought I owed 500 upon completion, and he started racking up my bill. I had to go to the city of Los Angeles county automotive investigations bureau and they had to go to the shop and settle the dispute in my favor. They got my car for me, I didn't have to pay anymore money and the shop paid for their mistake only after a lawsuit was on the table. When I got my car he damaged my new clutch on the rebuild and I had to go get a new clutch and pay for labor (750$) If he returns you car working, a few months or a year later you will have those problems again. He can change the oil and fix a bumper that's about it. DO NOT LET HIM TOUCH THE INTERNALS OF YOUR ENGINE. DONT LISTEN TO HIM SAY HE CAN DO IT! HE CLAIMS HE WAS AVIONICS ENGINEERING, WELL I NOR MY FATHER COULD TELL AMD HE IS A DIRTY BUSINESSMAN! BULLY MECHANIC, GREAT LIAR, SHOOSHES YOU! Oh my bday this oh my wife that!! A little bit on an expansive side. When I came to them for diagnostic, they did an elaborate diagnostic and figured out the problem. Unfortunately, they estimated too expensive. The would've charged me 70$ for the part which I could buy GENUINE for 22$ on Amazon. Of course, I look up the video on YouTube on how to change it and did it myself. I saved myself money by skipping them and doing the repairs myself. Look for other mechanic, because they overcharge and the wait is long, because he serves the fleet of of vehicle. He might be a honest mechanic to some people but he'll definitely take advantage of those not mechanical inclined. Like you, I was very much intrigued by the overwhelming swarm of positive reviews. With this many positive reviews, how could anything go wrong? But ratings for any repair shop can be misleading, especially when the majority are either oil changes/typical auto repairs/ or minor paint repair. The Project: In my experience, they were eager to take my vehicle which needed a LOT of repair work which consisted of Mechanical work and lots of body work, the entire side of the car. The initial quote was a fair price, which would have kept the majority of customers. This particular project was estimated to take 3 weeks which did not include waiting for parts to arrive from suppliers. After 2 weeks all the parts had arrived, and we were all eager to see the results of their work. Half the project was completed and Steve calls to ask for money up front to keep his shop open, claiming that he is a small business and has to pay his people. I refused to pay for any work that was incomplete. Fast forward to week 6 and the repair work has still not been completed. Leading up to this 6 week mark, we had inquired for weekly updates (we almost always had to call as any time they said they would call with an update, they never did), and there would always be an excuse for why they were behind. To name a few: It was too humid outside to paint(valid, but this doesn't delay for 2 weeks), it was a busy day at work(likely trying to squeeze in other people where they could turn the customer around the same day), we found another issue which slowed us down by several days(reasonable, but this gets old after the second time), it's my anniversary/birthday(fine, but I don't care), I am short on people(no excuse, stop taking jobs when you committed to this one), I forgot(this was my favorite one of course). With all the excuse making and delays, this is how a large project with a predicted 3 week turn around turned into an overall incomplete project after a painful 9 weeks. After week 10 we moved the car to another shop that had the capability to complete everything in 2.5 week. Work Done Wrong: After seeing the car completed after paint there were several major issues. First, the paint was nowhere near matching the original color. I remember how emphatic Steve was in his ability to match paint, this confidence would turn up with a paint texture nowhere close in matching, and areas that were not properly coated at all. All the panels they painted has to be stripped and repainted. The shop claims they would redo anything if I wasn't happy with it, but quite frankly, I didn't want to wait another 7 weeks. The damaged rocker panel had to have the dent pushed out and repaired. Instead of taking the panels off to get the buckling/dents out, he filled the rocker panel completely with bondo. Next, he used bondo to "glue" a brand new factory part side skirt to the car. It almost matched up, but broke off in several pieces when it came time to actually fix the car properly which required the removal of the side skirt. This is supposed to be a removable body panel! Generally speaking: Without a doubt, this is a great place to go for routine maintenance work. Brake Jobs, Suspension. Bumper repair, Oil Changes, etc. But this place made the mistake of accepting a project clearly out of their league, where they have to outsource nearly all of the body work (to probably the cheapest shop they can find) without the capability to perform work within a reasonable amount of time. Their coordinator Cindy is very pleasant and understanding, and is only relaying what her team is telling her. There is no question that Steve's poor communication between him and his employees leave frustrated customers. Cindy has to constantly work around this severe communication gap by doing her best to determine scheduling between the business owner that wants to have more control of when he does what projects in his shop. It is entirely possible that this place would be completely destitute without a coordinator like Cindy to salvage what little there is left of customer respect. Concluding thoughts: If you look again at all of the ratings for this shop, you will see that the vast majority are for small projects and repair work. Don't hesitate to use this place for your small jobs and routine work. But seriously scrutinize all of the reviews and specifically the large jobs reviews before considering this place for a big project. This place is very much run like a mom and pop shop that will do an average job for an average price over a very long period of time. Sadly I will not be returning, there are hundreds of shops out there in the valley. read more

My fiance and I were on our way to LA from the Bay Area when his Mini Cooper began making a terrible noise on the 101. We pulled into an empty parking lot as the sun was going down on Labor Day weekend and thought we were in big trouble. I mean, who is going to be around to even let you drop off a car? After getting off the phone with AAA, we started calling repair places on Yelp that were close to where we broke down. No one appeared to be open due to the holiday weekend until we got super lucky and Steve from Western Auto picked up the phone. Steve must work even when everyone else takes off because he said he was just about to leave for the day but would wait for us to be towed to his lot. Thank goodness we found him; I really don't know what we would have done! He waited for us with his wife, which was incredibly kind. When he came back after dinner and saw we were still waiting for a friend to pick us up it seemed like he was ready to offer us a ride. Our friend made it a few minutes later and we celebrated our arrival to LA by going to Koreatown and stuffing ourselves with KBBQ. Phew, that was a crazy day. We learned our Mini's axel was badly damaged and a new part needed to be ordered. Unfortunately, no one else was open on Labor Day so we were stuck for a few days. Steve's wife found a new axel for us after visiting several places to find the best price; we appreciated her hard work and help. The Mini was fixed by Wednesday afternoon and we were able to return our rental car earlier in the day, saving us money. Steve worked on the car as soon as he got the part so luckily we only missed 2 days of work instead of 3. We were able to drive back home the same day and get back before midnight. I really felt like we received the best service out there and if we had to break down I feel very lucky it was in Canoga Park near Western Auto and that we happened to find this business on Yelp. I love this place. I came here for help replacing one of my brake light bulbs. It's probably easy but I have no idea how to do it. Cindy and Steve came to the rescue yet again. I actually extra bulbs from a previous time I had to replace a tail light. So Steve took a look, replaced the light bulb AND he checked all of my external lights to see if any of those needed to be replaced. Nope. All was good. He did it super fast. He was super friendly and helpful. And he did it at no charge. Steve - you are a life saver, a kind soul and a darn good auto mechanic! I am blessed to know you and Cindy! I called this place due to it's great review. As a women it's hard to find a trusted auto mechanic. I did not want to bring it to the lexus dealer as it was very expensive. When I called for pricing, Cindy picked up the phone and was very helpful. I set up an appointment for Thursday at 830am. Because she knows I was in a hurry she has prepared all the paperwork for me. When I called up Cindy scheduled me for the next morning when they opened to bring my car in . I got an oil change , front brakes and rotors. I also needed a new serpentine belt . Look at low star reviews because everyone has the same complaint. Took my car for a repair. They start off very nice. Then day after day and my car was not fixed. Then they returned the car claiming repaired and it wasn't. Took the car back and they kept charging me for additional things. Got the car back and still had the same problem. Took it to another mechanic and they said the part I paid hundreds for was actually not repaired. Had to pay again at another place. I don't think Steve knows how to repair complex things. Probably just a place for oil change or other minor issues. I do not recommend this place at all. read more

I finally found a mechanic I can trust, Cindy is very pleasant, etc. My sons Jetta had not been working for months as he needed a new clutch, etc. and quite honestly had no faith in the mechanics I'd gone to here in Santa Clarita. I met Steve through an Offer Up ad I had posted and I mentioned to him I was selling some things in the hopes of repairing my son's car and asked him if he knew of anyone honest and turned out he was a mechanic. He was such a nice guy and he told me if I could get the car there on Wednesday he'd have it fixed by Friday. He went through the entire car , noticed my son had been driving on a wobbly wheel, replaced tires, fixed everything to make the car safe for him and the bill was quite reasonable. Another positive experience with Steve at Western Auto! I've taken two 17+ year old cars to Steve for just over a year now for maintenance and repair. I came to him on a word-of-mouth recommendation from a friend. He's done a range of work for me: oil changes, 100k (belt/pump) services, brake work, struts, a MAP sensor replacement, and other diagnostic services. Why I continue to use Western Auto... - Continued sense that Steve's honest when it comes to pricing and explanation of work needed. He also the type of mechanic who'll show you the old part(s) he replaced before tossing them out. I appreciate the opportunity to be educated on what's being repaired/replaced. - Cost comparisons & pricing. Without asking, I've been given price quotes with both OEM and aftermarket options, along with Steve's opinion on the cost/benefit of each. I also had the mechanic in my family review a couple of the parts costs and he found them to be fair (not much above cost (not talking retail cost, either)). - Speed of work done. For the work I've needed, I've always picked up the cars in less than a day. Other things to be aware of... This place is BUSY, so don't be surprised if you can't get an immediate appointment, or even one the next morning. I live and work in the area so I've had no issue making an appointment up to a week out (for non-time sensitive oil change or belt & pump type service). Also, if you're used to talking to your mechanic on the phone, this isn't that kind of shop. Steve hired Cindy so he can focus on repairs instead of phone calls and billing. He always answers my questions though, just in-person or via Cindy. Finally, there's been one hiccup ... Once, after calling Western Auto and describing some issues my car was having, I was told to go directly to a transmission specialist. I ended up wasting 2 days at the transmission shop where--although my car undoubtably could use transmission work after 160k miles--the primary issue was not diagnosed. After repeating my description of the symptoms to Steve in person, he said it did NOT sound like a transmission issue but an engine problem, and proceeded to have me make an appointment with him wherein he diagnosed and fixed the issue within 2 hours of dropping the car off (a failed sensor, which caused difficulty accelerating from a stop). Moral of the story, talk to Steve personally or have him check your car before taking a referral for a repair. BOTTOM LINE: I intend to continue using Steve as my mechanic. He works hard to run his small business, is pleasant to work with, and seems to have competitive service costs. read more

I want to express how very happy and thankful I am with not only the wonderful customer service I recieved but also for the amount of money I saved. He wanted to charge me $40 for the work which took 20 minutes! I was in shock. I was quoted $200-$500 to replace the headlight bucket in my volkswagon beetle from the dealership to the first shop on the right as you enter. Everyone else was telling me my fender and bumper needed to come off and it would be about 4-5 hours of labor! I refused to pay only $40 and asked the lady to please charge me at least $100, she said it was too much. I told her to please me it, and I literally had to beg her to charge me $80 and not $40! I highly suggest this place becjse they do honest work and they dont try to rip you off. Im never going anywhere else. Huge THANK YOU to everyone at Western Auto!! Cindy was so kind and you all seriously saved my ass. I was in LA early July visiting my boyfriend on my drive from San Jose moving down to Corpus Christi for school. I had made the decision to keep my 2008 Chevy Malibu rather than buy a new car. I obviously needed my car to be reliable for the 2000 mile drive as well as for my commutes in Texas. For that reason I spent almost $3,000 getting my car in tip top shape back in San Jose before I left. But I did not have peace of mind because the shop I took it to could not diagnose what was wrong with my coolant tank. So basically my engine could overheat, could blow a head gasket at any time and I'd be SOL. Well, literally the DAY BEFORE I left LA for Texas, around 2pm or so, I started my car and her water just broke all over the driveway. I am so lucky that I happened to be 1 mile from Western Auto when this happened, and not in the middle of the desert in Arizona. We took my car in and explained my situation to Cindy at Western Auto. I am literally moving to Texas in the morning. This was a Friday, by the way, and she told me they don't really work on cars on Saturday. They accepted my car anyway and said they would take a look. Cindy was so communicative over the phone, letting me know exactly what was going on at every point. They clearly stayed late to finish my car because of my urgent situation. It was ready early the next morning and I was relieved that it was also very inexpensive. I have since driven to south Texas, passing through 120 degree heat in Arizona, and it's been about a month now that I've been commuting here. So I can pretty much say at this point my car is in great shape! I have checked the coolant and it's still right where it was when I picked it up from the shop. I just wish I lived closer so they could be my go-to for all of my auto maintenance needs. read more

I am an avid lurker on yelp, but the service and treatment I received was so bad, that I had to share. In short Western Auto - Lack professionalism, Don't stand by their work, Reuse worn and damaged parts, Reel you in with a low price, only to get you later with the "one more thing" The worst of all, Steve will lie to you. This to me is the worst thing a mechanic can do. I don't have the knowledge to diagnose my problems, so I have to trust that when my mechanic does so, he is being fair and honest with his findings. Unfortunately not only is my car still not fixed, but I have caught Steve lying to me on multiple occasions which leads me to question his estimate, and any of the "work" his shop has done. Don't be fooled by the low prices. You are getting substandard work, used parts, and being fed lies. My car was in there for oil seepage from the seals. 3 months and $2000 later, the seepage has turned into constant drips, and I now have a check engine light on. I have also purchased parts that had nothing to do with the initial repair because they were "damaged on removal", and other parts that were damaged by Western have been quietly epoxied rather than replaced. Now how can someone claiming to be a specialist working on airplane engines use EPOXY to fix a part which they broke? See attached pic- That booger you looking at is a $1 epoxy holding my brake vacuum pump. Thanks to our expert mechanic who says it's perfectly ok. I came to Western Auto because of all the great Yelp reviews, and what I thought was a fair price. That price has more than tripled since then, and I now know why his reviews are so good. Steve will badger you repeatedly for a review if he believes you will have something positive to say. Unfortunately my experience was not positive, but it is honest and un-curated. I should have cut my losses after the first visit, but I stuck with it, and kept bringing my car back to Western Auto because I wanted to give them a fair opportunity to do right. Instead, I was subjected to lie after lie about the status of my car, and what was wrong. Steve yelling obscenities in the background while Cindy (the manager) was instructed to lie to me (next time use the mute button). Too bad people working for him are way more skilled than what you would expect a mechanic and owner to be. Shout out to Pete for doing whatever he could to resolve it, you rock dude at least you tried. Cindy you are awesome but not sure how long you will keep lying for him. Finally If I was you and reading this review- I wouldn't trust them even with my $50 used bicycle.. forget about the cars which we primarily use to carry our life's worth and most precious cargo-Family and Kids. My $2K bought me 3 months of agony, Lies, disappointment and epoxied parts, so think before you even consider him for your next job. UPDATE 1- Took my car to other Mechanic, who inspected it for 30 minutes and was able to find out the problem. Out of curiosity I asked him to test the broken $473 Part ( Mass Airflow Sensor) which Steve had me buy and replace because he said it was broken. I wasn't shocked or surprised when the other mechanic told me that my "part is perfectly all right and I just wasted all that money because someone possibly didn't know what they were doing" Part isn't the problem :) UPDATE -2 Finally Got my Car back from BMW. They did a complete check and provided detailed report of what shoddy work was done on my car. It's AWESOME.. Just AWESOME. so glad that i have everything i need to proceed with my action plan. I would like to share another super fix ( picture Attached ) by Western Auto. This is for "car shaking as soon as you start in mornings, Engine light on, Vacuum leak codes and Adaption codes" Steve's Fix- Replace my MAF ( read details in older reviews ) and reset codes, but his actual fix was put an ELECTRICAL TAPE on the hose which he broke. Genius way to stop vacuum leak. And guess what ..it even passed his smoke test 2 times. its funny that Steve told me he replaced a broken hose and didn't charge me any one for customer satisfaction. FYI Next time at least remember to take out that tape roll from inside the hood LOL That was just one of the findings .More to follow . i will make sure that i keep you all updated about the progress of this situation till we put it to rest. think before you consider even an oil change. Bad things may happen on road when someone decides to cut corners, use substandard parts or even worse use broken parts with tape and epoxy. i am glad that nothing happened to me or my kids but i might not get lucky again. read more

I feel like a solid mechanic is WAY up there on the list of valued partners in life. You don't expect to have all that much luck, in an enormous city like LA, in finding a mechanic that is solid, authentic, trustworthy and really talented, and I feel like I've had the good fortune to find it. Steve and Cindy are truly solid, honest, really fantastic people. They are about service and, when it would have been really easy to make a buck, they choose, instead, to do what's best for the customer. I was trying to look for an honest and good Audi Repair shop and I found Western Auto Service on Yelp. I read all the reviews and I needed to try it out for myself. I have to replace two rear shock absorbers for my car and they did an excellent job, it was quick and precise! They didn't rip me off with the labor cost. The owner is very humble and down to earth guy. I found this place though Yelp and have been coming here for over a year now in my Honda S2000. Steve goes above and beyond. He remembers your name and is honest. Today I took my car in for a synthetic oil change, Steve ordered Mobile 1 (my choice). The delivery took about 50 minutes. Uncalled for, for O'Reilly Automotive. Instead of having me sit there the whole time, Steve recommended Fram synthetic. He uses it in his own personal cars and that it's $10 cheaper cause it's just a name brand that you're paying for at a certain point. (i.e., like clothing) I mentioned I was going to Vegas for the weekend and would appreciate an inspection to see if everything is good for the trip and I would pay him extra. He gave a thorough inspection, told me what I needed coming up but didn't pressure me. On top of that he didn't charge me for the inspection. I'm glad I found this gem of a place and would recommend it to friends and family. read more

I called Western having found out that my brakes and rotors needed to be replaced and honda quoted me an outrageous price. Cindy gave me an affordable quote and was even able to fit me in first thing the next morning. The whole staff greeted me and was very nice! I even enjoyed Cindy and mines conversation. I found Western Auto Services after visiting several other shops, that were not much better than the Audi Dealer that I was fleeing from. I don't want to spend too much time commenting on my experience with the Dealer - but, plenty of the value of my experience at Western Auto Services is in relation to the miserable experiences I encountered at my local Audi Dealer. You can probably deduce the Dealer I'm speaking of, by my location in Woodland Hills... I have a 1999 Audi A4 that bled me of my hard earned money to the tune of $7000. in the span of 6 months of repairs at the Dealer. Not only did the Dealer treat me like my $ wasn't as good as maybe one of the R8 supercar owners' -- but they went WEEKS before they called to tell me the problem with my car on several occasions. The last straw was when I had an issue that rendered my car not drivable, and it took a week to tell me that they needed to "look into it further" - then, after waiting on the follow-up for over 2 weeks - I was told that they "couldn't find the problem" and suggested replacing the entire Engine Wiring Harness, which ran about $5000. This lazy response of just "replacing the whole thing" is usual for for most Dealers and many independent shops (in my experience). This is where Western Auto Services comes in. You'll likely have Cindy as your first contact with Western Auto Services -- and that in itself was a welcome change and pleasure. Cindy isn't some temp hired to keep the chair at the Dealer reception desk warm - and just forward you to a Service Advisor's voicemail - Cindy knows her way around a garage and has been working at shops for many years. She may be even able to give an informed opinion over the phone about what is going on with your car. Upon arriving at Western -- you'll meet Steve (the owner) who will personally work on your car. Right away you know you are talking to someone that knows the trade at the highest level. He took the time to go over possible reasons the car was exhibiting the symptoms that I had experienced, and told me that he would do his best to keep the costs to a minimum - and even show me the original parts that would be replaced. As they looked into the issue, they kept me in the loop every step of the way via phone call updates from Cindy - which always left me with a sense that I had an ally in Western Auto Services. Remember the $5000. Engine Wiring Harness? Steve agreed that was the source of the issues I had been experiencing. However, because of Steve's attention to detail and professionalism - he went to the trouble of actually finding the 1 bad wire in the Engine Wiring Harness that was bad, told me about it - and I had the issue solved by the next day. Here's the kicker: By only having to repair that 1 bad wire and not just "replacing the whole thing" like the Audi dealer advised ($5000.) - I was charged $320., and drove my car home the next day. I would later find out that the labor involved to remove the Engine Wiring Harness and actually dig into the spider web of different wires to find that 1 bad wire took at least 1 full day of searching and diagnosing. With what typical hourly labor charges alone run -- that figure would be at least a $1000 or more. I hope sharing my trials and errors with other shops until I found a friend in Western Auto Services well benefit you - and give Steve and Cindy at Western, the praise they deserve. read more

Found Western Auto Services on Yelp because I needed a honest and trustworthy mechanic nearby. I found a used 2009 Honda Civic for sale online and needed a professional to take a look at it. If anyone has bought a car from a private owner and don't know jack squat about cars. You understand where I am coming from and how extra careful you have to be when investing money for an used car. Carfax won't tell you everything and why would you risk it? I called around 0800 and talked to Steve. I asked him how much would it cost for him to run a diagnostic and inspection. He gave me a great quote compare to Keys Honda Woodland hills. You wouldn't believe it if I told you. I made an appointment with him at 1100. I arrived at 1037 because if you're on time you're late. I got confused because Western Auto Services is actually in the back side of the entire lot. I met Steve and Michelle they were very professional, friendly, and understanding. Steve listened to what was going on and what I wanted. They also have good taste in music. He ran his test with the computer, drove the car, checked out the hood, inspected and lifted the car. He explained to me everything he was checking for each step of the way. I was comfortable to ask him questions and was glad to be able to see what he was doing to the potential car I was about to purchase. Steve (Owner) and Cindy (Manager) were AWESOME!!!! They were professional, kind and down-to-earth. Steve noticed the bad paint job another company had done right away. I arrived without an appointment and they still took me without a hassle. They even gave me water while I waited and were great to talk to.
