Had a very pleasant and confidence building experience dealing with Don today at Western Automatic Transmission. Don was great on the phone (I called ahead first to be sure they also work on manual transmissions). Invited mento bring my truck by for a look, after which he would tell me what he thinks needs to be addressed. He isn't far from my Apt. so I headed right over. Upon arrival the shop might not impress most people positively. The place is full of mechanic bays, has a pothole-laden drive, and there's characters of all sorts milling around. ...I loved all of that. :) I was immediately greeted by Victor, a charming and chatty gentleman who might be latin or might be cajun. All I know for sure is he loves two things: people and cars. There was another guy standing nearby. An older white guy, quiet and studying a pallet with discarded transmissions on it. The way he was eyeing them quietly reminded me of how my dad behaves in mechanics shops. I thought he was a customer. Eventually he started soft-spokenly talking to me about my truck. Turned out this guy was Don! We talked through the possible things going on. Then we took a test drive, a fairly long one too, and talked the whole time about everyday life. I really lile Don, the busiest, happiest 82 yr old I've met in a long time. In the end it was decided the transmission is great. I'm going to come back later in the week for them to change the pinion gear seal on my rear differential. If you're looking for a drivetrain specialist you can feel good about and trust, I suggest you at least come out to speak with Don. I'm sure glad I did. read more

The mechanic said I had transmission issues. So I found Don and brought it to him. We drove it around the block for about 10-minutes and he said, this is a differential issue, but you have a Subaru and your differential is connected to your transmission. To replace this with a used one will be about $3000. . . but, this doesn't make sense. You have a Subaru with 60,000 miles, you should google this and see if there is a recall issue. Don was right! I brought it into Subaru and they are replacing my transmission for free! This would have been $8000 to do it with them but Don's advice saved me $1000s of dollars! Thank you Don! read more

NEVER TAKE YOUR CAR HERE! I called on the phone to ask how much it would be to rebuild the transmission on an old dodge mini van. I was quoted $900 for a 3 speed and $1200 for a 4 speed. When I drove there the place was a MAJOR DIVE.Very disorganized and filthy Beyond description. (Very scary neighborhood) There was a guy about 90 Year old man (Don)sitting in there cave of an office. I told him I needed a rebuilt tranny. He then told me a rebuilt tranny for my 98 mini van would cost $2100!! THAT IS $900 more than the 5 estimates I've already gotten and almost twice the price I was quoted by his company the same day on the phone. my car had the yellow check engine light on and the transmission felt funny so I went to an auto shop and they announced: it's the transmission, usually it's 4000 but since I'm good I'll do it for only 2k. I asked do I really have to change the whole transmission? but he wasn't even listening. So I looked around found this shop specialized in transmission, I thought maybe they can fix it without changing the whole thing. Don said it was probably and electronic panel and it was going to cost me 200-500$. I was happy because I had already divided the damage by 10. few days later I went back and he said he couldn't find what was wrong, so I worried: maybe my car was unrepairable. Don said maybe it wasn't the transmission and he was going to check the engine. I left my car and 2 days later the problem was fixed: it was something disconnected, I think a vacuum. the best part was that Don didn't charge for all the labor. He said he had used my car for an experiment and it considered it community service. Not only a great job, also good sense of humor. read more

After the cool experience I had with them, I told a neighbor about the shop. He had an intermittent transmission slipping problem. They let him know it was just a little low in transmission fluid, but since it was a little dirty, he have them put in new fluid. We were both lucky it was simpler than we thought. But if it were something serious, I don't know of a better place to have things done. And we both wish we had gone there sooner. Too many people just put it off, then it can get much worse, and cost a whole lot more. :( read more

My transmission was shot, and I wasn't sure where to turn. A friend recommended a shop that has been in the neighborhood forever (which is usually a good sign.) I brought my truck into Western Transmissions and they were helpful, friendly, and the price was really reasonable. They even referred me to a shop down the street for a worn tire, and called that shop to let them know I was coming and kind of in a hurry. The older gentlemen in the office are hilarious! DO NOT GO HERE!!!!! I went here to get my transmission fixed as well as my tires. Don, the owner, put the WRONG lug nuts on my car with the incorrect key. I tried calling him to fix and he was EXTREMELY rude to me and said "I can't help you. You are wrong." I took to TWO car shops who told me the lug nuts are not the ones for my Lexus. Here is a little story, I recently changed out the exhaust to my car. I started getting so many CEL codes and I had no idea where to start. I searched the internet and found Western Transmissions. This was a god send. I had called in and spoke to Jack... it was little later during the day around 5 pm and well it was too late for me to even try and do anything. After speaking to Jack he told me to come in the following morning, I went there around 830 am. Jack came out pulled out the obd2 scanner, scanned my codes looked over my car and just went through the basic things when trying to diagnose a car with a problem He noticed a few of my vacuum lines weren't being held with clamps he was kind enough to give me some and even installed them himself. The problem with my car was my catalytic converters he gave me some advice and since the car is new he obviously told me to take to the dealer and have it checked by them. I can express the gratitude and appreciation that I have for Jack. He isn't one of those "dirty mechanics" you can tell that he has been in the business for many years and has a lot of experience under his belt. He is calm, collected, and trustworthy. When my car is out of warranty I will definitely come to him for my car troubles. How do I know he is honest and trustworthy?..... He did this for free!!... and he denied me giving him anything for his troubles! I tried to give him $20 for 10 minutes of his time and he wouldn't have it. What a great man. read more

Where do I begin. Don from the moment I called was up front with pricing and type of work they did there at the shop. He told me what the least amount expected was for parts and labor and what the worst case scenario could be but he would try his best to do it for as cheap as possible. I had gone to two different mechanics one turned out to be a clown because he "took it to a friend who fixed transmissions" when that mechanic was a transmission mechanic. That was when I decided to go to Don after about a two weeks my car was running smooth with no problems. It has already been 3000 miles and my car still runs like a champ. I will definitely recommend my friends and family to Don. When I picked up my car his mechanic showed me everything he did and showed me the old replaced parts. He also answered all my questions.
