Apparently the Bay St. store has new management and the place has been spiffed up (just a bit) and some prices have been lowered. That's the good news. In general, the prices for everything from eggs to oil are still consistently much higher than almost any other chain supermarket in Staten Island-the exception being Key Food, whose prices are artificially inflated beyond almost anywhere else. At this Western Beef, ungraded USDA "Inspected" level beef is still being sold at prices higher than certified Angus Choice beef at ShopRite or Stop snd Shop. The poultry looks unclean and is of unknown origin. A small container of Country Crock Plant Butter is $6.50 here-$3.45 at ShopRite. The "Cuban" bread baked here is good, and the store is a reliable source for pan Caribbean/African items, especially since they are available here under one roof. But even many of these items are overpriced. The $1.00-$1.50 package of fresh thyme found in virtually every fruit and vegetable store in Brooklyn can be $3.00 here. There are produce sales that are reasonable, but even here the price of plantains is double Stop and Shop's price. At least Western Beef is big, but still operating on the edge of price gouging. So today for the first time I went to western beef on Bay Street, I read the reviews and they were horrible, I decided to take a chance and go anyway when I got there, I found the place spotless cleaned spoke to one of the workers that plus the president And found out that they had taken over the place as of yesterday March 31. They proceeded to tell me that they had taken over the place and that things will be getting better, they were the nicest people helpful. The place was clean and I was very happy, I will definitely be going back there. I will definitely be a regular customer, they're under new management, so please go things have changed. They are also going to be fixing the parking lot. they have great items. read more

Only come to this location if you have no other choice. Employees don't care and managers care less. They see you wondering around reading signs and dont even bother to ask if you need help. Lines are always super long and service needs improvement. Prices are not the best but there isn't any other super market in the area that can compete with them. read more

Of all my years of passing by a Western Beef in Flushing, Queens I have never been to any of its locations, until now in Staten Island. Prior to a pool BBQ gathering of five whom I have the immense pleasure of an open invitation, we stopped for grocery shopping at Western Beef. Western Beef is a supermarket with a specialty of meat. I'm writing this partially out of the misguided, RUDE review by 'Kimberly K,': The 'hipster' who made those cracks about food stamps, etc. I don't know if she's trying to be a comedian, or - if she even shops for food, but, her cackling were WAY off base. I'm a native Manhattanite, but lived in St. George from '06 - '10 (May). Having grown up with VERY expensive supermarkets, it was a (pleasant) surprise how much I saved at Western Beef. Not only is S.I.'s Western Beef a great place, on occasion, I'd have to pick up items for a friend - as the prices at the Manhattan Western Beef, were more than in S.I. Yeah, I know: real estate prices. Anyway, a good/bad thing's been taking place in St. George that I saw in my 3 years: a LOT of these twits - 'hipsters' - who would've previously moved to 'hip' places in Brooklyn, are flocking here. With these people comes inevitable whiners who want everything for them tied-up with 'shiny bows,' not realizing that it was cheaper for them to move there BECAUSE of the area's lower income residents (who'd been there for YEARS!). If this gentrification continues, it'll bring higher prices, more of the whining 'hipsters,' etc, so - for NOW, I'd say that (S.I. In general) the prices, choices available are terrific. The staff here - as anywhere - has good employees and bad ones. I've dealt with both, and found the best ones to stand in line for. They were speedy, efficient and friendly. I don't know about the panhandler'S' (emphasis on the plural). I'd never seen ONE, much less more than that. Right by the entrance, there are cab drivers who are available for hire. Something I found helpful. If this is what that person thinks are panhandlers, well, enough said. As, I said, I left S.I. in May '10. I'm back in Manhattan, and, even though I've 3 supermarkets - all equidistant from me, I'm now paying MUCH more, for less, not nearly the variety (the store brand prices are insane), and, I'm fining it MUCH harder to shop now. I'd give ANYTHING if I just had the LIFE-saving of S.I.'s Western Beef now UPDATE: August 19, '11 NYC Department of Consumer Affairs just released a list (the top 25 is available publicly) of NY City supermarkets that had violations (overcharging, unsanitary conditions, etc.). the ONLY good thing about this supermarket is the price of the food.. very good deals.. but don't buy meat here.. I bought chicken and it had hair on it. seriously. But everything else is cheap and a huge variety of different types of Spanish foods. The negative things about this place: The parking lot has holes everywhere, I almost tripped. It also gets really crazy trying to park in here. The workers are rude, nasty, and every other word I'd rather not say. They are SLOW.. so don't expect to check out quickly you'll be online a good half hour if you have one or 2 people in front of you. EVEN the express line is SLOW. This place is a nightmare! Not only do the staff hate their lives... they tend to take it out on the customers. The cashiers are rude, loud and smack their gum like five year old children. Nobody can help you or tell you where to find that elusive item you've been looking for. The line-ups are long and slow due to people paying with food stamps and WIC cards and generally holding up the line as they get their food put on one bill and their alcohol on another. The meat is cheap because it's their primary product but everything else is ridiculously expensive. I blame this on the government footing the bill for most of the merchandise sold. I suppose if I didn't pay for my own food, I wouldn't give a shit how much it costs either. On a good note, the guys at the deli counter seem to have graduated customer service class with flying colors. They are friendly and accommodating. Too bad the deli food has to be sent through a window straight to the cashier--no doubt due to ghetto thievery. Be prepared to be harassed by panhandlers on your way out. read more

Close cheap and affordable huge supermarket. Food is fresh and good deals. Can get super pack though and the workers and even shoppers are not pleasant. There can be some nice drama and shows in there also, I love when the cashiers flip on there managers too. Great management there! Lines can be super long especially beginning of the month and weekends. Try to get there early which I know there open early because they have fresh bakery on premises with really good fresh bread. Theres always cab services outside and security. Big parking lot but shopping carts all over the place and even sometimes take up parking spots which is annoying. read more

In response to the guy coming down on those who use foodstamps, Never judge a person unless you have walked a mile in their moccasins. My family and I are on foodstamps and yes, we have seen people abusing them but, for the most part, people have to use them and many wish to get off the dole. I'm one of them. Unfortunately in this economy, it is difficult to find employment, especially in my field. Not that I ain't trying. I never expected to be on foodstamps, but at least they are there so that my family can eat. What would you prefer, people starving? This is most likely the place we are going to shop for food when we do get our foodstamps. Having had experience with a Western Beef before, I can make one recommendation; bring a warm coat to go into the meat section unless you like being fruzen-gladje. But they normally have a good selection of meats and we do stock the fridge, freezer, and cupboards with enough to see us through the month and then some. read more

I'm not going to pretend that you're entering a Whole Foods, or even a Trader Joe's, when you walk into Western Beef. It is what it is. That said, I do think the extremely negative reviews are a bit reactive. It's not that horrible, the staff have always been (relatively) efficient when I've dealt with them, even if they're not the most enthusiastic cashiers you'll meet. Western Beef on Staten Island at Bay Street AND Forest Avenue is a NIGHTMARE. A living NIGHTMARE. Always Dirty. Parking Lot Filthy, Pot holes, Sidewalk Filthy. Inside the Store, you immediately smell "funk". Floor is always dirty. Aisles are heavily overpacked with Merchandise. Two people cannot travel down the same Aisle. Prices are so so. Some great Bargains, some not so much. The Employees? I cannot say anything good about them. They Scream across the Room to get another Employees help. Major attitudes in the Store. NEVER once a Friendly smile. I do not think anyone is able to Smile. Oh and the Check out Lanes-be prepared to spend 10, 15 sometimes minutes just to check out. And many many times they CLOSE a Lane, while your in it and they walk away " Lane Closed...." This place is dirty outside, dirty inside, everything icky and the Check out process is dreadful. This is the filthiest supermarket ever. Birds were openly picking at the produce. Anyone could slip and fall on all of the open food. Expired yogurts mixed in with fresher items. I am writing this review based on my previous experiences of shopping in the local supermarkets of bensonhurst. So shopping at Western Beef may not be the most ideal supermarket but its 10 notches above from what I was exposed in Brooklyn. Western Beef is one of the most organized supermarkets that I have ever seen in NYC. They had stacks of fresh fruits and vegetables and an array of meats. I noticed that when I was browsing around, the managers made sure that the price stickers were up to date to the products that were stacked on the shelves. Everybody in the store was extremely friendly and courteous and their prices are pretty much reasonable. And even though it can get crowded, the store can maintain the lines really well. You may not experience Trader Joe and/or Whole Foods products but I would take this supermarket over any over priced and over crowded store in the city anytime. read more

My very first time shopping in a Western Beef. Not sure why, there is one in Manhattan... for the longest time I thought it was just a meat market, and not a full grocery store - which it is. However... I wasn't won over. The place is a little run down and disorganized. The prices are all right, but not the greatest. (A watermelon of average size should not cost over $10.) The parking lot is full of potholes. It does have a really good meat selection - if you're looking for specialty items like lamb, goat, etc - you can get it here. They also have a lot of Hispanic and Caribbean products, to meet the demands of the neighborhood. So - for these kinds of items, I might go back. For just basic groceries, ShopRite still wins... though my neighbor has recently recommended Waldbaums. Gotta try shopping there next! read more

This western beef has great pricing on everyday items. The Fish department needs to be shut down unfortunately. I have purchased fish here , each time hoping my fish would be fresh and each time i left disappointed. This week i didn't have time or energy to go to a fish market in Brooklyn i usually get fish from so i went to Western Beef , with hopes maybe i was just being paranoid . And i was still sold rotten whiting filets. And the fish i picked were whole, i requested them be made into filets. I will never shop in this disgusting fish market again. I'm not quite sure what "Kimberly K" is referring to about the Deli she is obviously writing a review without ever have been is the store. I go often, and my cold-cuts are handed to me there isn't even a "window" as she is stating. Yes, there are many people using food-stamps but how the slows down the process in unknown to me. The reason why it takes long to check out is poor staffing and not having all the lanes open during "rush hours". I mean the place can be classed up a lil bit but the people are nice the prices are decent and the fresh baked bread is delicious!! I've noticed that the negative reviews posted for this supermarket are not about the supermarket at all but, rather, their own personal racial and/or class bias. This is a great supermarket. Having moved here from Manhattan just shy of two years ago I was pleased with the low prices compared to prices in Manhattan. This store offers a very good range of fresh fruit and vegetables, good quality cuts of meats including meats popular among the various cultural backgrounds that reside throughout the immediate neighborhood (and throughout most areas of Staten Island I've visited so far). The staff can be helpful. Often stopping the work they're doing to answer any questions I have. Unlike some other posters, I've experienced staff members asking if I needed help. Most of the checkout staff is efficient. (Coming from Manhattan I don't expect people who have to handle as many customers as this staff does to be especially chummy while processing my purchases, but they're never rude when I speak to them.) I've only experienced ONE staff member who didn't seem to know what was where in the store. I figured he might've been new because most of them have been able to tell me whatever I need to know. THERE ARE NO PAN HANDLERS OUTSIDE THIS STORE!!!! Never has a single person asked me for a cent either inside or outside of this store. Nor anywhere along the several blocks surrounding the store. In fact, the entire neighborhood is rather sleepy in my opinion. Outside of shoppers there're usually very few people walking the streets. It shares a parking area with a small mall-like run of shops, including a RiteAid, a bank and a laundry. There are usually taxis available just outside the exit. There's a large dry cleaning service nearby. It's run by a very pleasant Asian couple. THE DOWNSIDE: 1- The store recently took over operation of the seafood section. The prices are higher, fewer goods offered and quality not as good as it had been before the change. 2- This store tends to be extremely busy during weekends, but particularly so on Saturdays. It does get a lot of public assistance shoppers during the last and first weekends of each month. (Just after checks and food stamps arrive I assume. Being new to the area I've noted that who is or isn't on public assistance is not limited by race. It's obvious that the surrounding neighborhoods, basically made up of blue collar workers, has suffered a great deal due to the worldwide economy problems. Many people here are out of work, but they're generally normal, decent people.) These shoppers tend to purchase large amounts of goods at one time. Anywhere from one heaping shopping cart to as many as THREE shopping carts. Waiting on lines behind them can seem like waiting forever. Not good if you have meats, dairy and frozen goods to get into the fridge. As a single guy I find this annoying so I've established a routine that suits me: I'm looking for a better place to buy seafood. For now, I buy less of it at this store. As much as possible, I avoid shopping on Saturdays. If I do, I arrive very early or very late in the day, or I just put it off till Sunday or in the evening during workdays. I tend to avoid shopping at the end or beginning of the month. Last but not least -- They tend to run out of my favorite cookies. (Probably all sold on Saturday.) Had the seafood operation not changed I'd have given this store 5 stars. read more

went here with my roommate & i realized it's a few blocks away from our house via Van Duzer. it's thanksgiving day the next day day, & the place was a madhouse at around 2pm wednesday. people were more probably busy with working on their last minute shopping list. my roommate wanted to buy just a few things for salad, plus wine. i just got myself 2 bars of dark chocolate. it was relatively quick, & looking exciting because of the crowd doing their shopping at this time of the day for a major holiday. i'd say, i had a pleasant first time trip. i saw a lot of interesting characters. i think people who have problems or issues on skin color should rather stay away from shopping in this place, as they can get scared from seeing people of many different colors. or worst, don't come here if you're not comfortable shopping with other people below your class (w/c in itself is pure BS)--- the place as it is, is a great place to do your shopping (unless of course, if you're looking for something else) - well stocked, well lighted, convenient, relatively spacious. trust me, i saw all these on a pre-holiday so i could have had a worst first time shopping experience. read more

Though I still despise, and will never get used to the able-bodied, freeloading parasites who buy everything with Food Stamps, store has gotten better. Looks cleaner, too. Only if you are desperate should you shop here. Unfortunately, I fall into this "desperate" category due to the ease of accessibility and it having a wide variety of both fresh and frozen groceries. That's really the only positive thing I have to say....They have a lot of stuff. I simply do not have time to visit it multiple places (produce stand, meat market, etc. each week) However, it's getting to the point that I'd rather spend double ordering my groceries online as opposed to ever setting foot in this place again. It is filthy, unorganized, overcrowded, understaffed, and I can pretty much guarantee that at least one if not several of your items will rang up incorrectly. The employees are all disgusting as well. I constantly see employees pick food up off the ground and put it back up on the produce stand. I see them cough/sneeze without covering or washing their hands. The men in the butcher area will hit on anything with legs. The box boys think their job is to cause as many traffic jams in the aisles as possible (they especially love to do this during the busy hours). The cashiers are always eating snacks at the register. Last visit, the cashier rang up my chicken breast and complained to me that the meat department did a bad job of wrapping it because she just got gross juice all over her hand, SHE THEN PROCEEDED TO EAT A CHIP AND LICK HER FINGERS! The management is also a joke! I recently went to have my receipt corrected as there were way too many items incorrectly charged to just turn my head. She was extremely unprofessional and made me go retrieve the items and wait in line a second time before she could help me. When I informed her that this is a frequent occurrence, she rudely said, "Welcome to Western Beef Honey". Im a believable of supporting our communities. Western Beef has many things I would buy specifically because of my hispanic taste. However, the lack of respect and customer service is nerve cringing. 1 star is too many stars for this place. I was just there, store was a disaster. So much clutter and mess every where. Very unorganized.. But that isn't even what bothered me.. As I was about to check out, I see 4 carts of returns, and in one cart it is filled with atleast 10 packages of Raw meat.. Just sitting in a return cart no refrigeration or anything. I was on line for 35 minutes (due to the staff talking to each other across the room, laughing goofing around and cursing) before I finally got so disgusted I just left my cart and walked out (the raw meat cart still was not even looked at to put back) Not only is that unsanitary, it is very DANGEROUS!!!!
